Mordecai Richler has been captivating young people of all ages with Jacob Two-Two (the youngest child of five, who says everything twice because no one hears him the first time) since 1975. I think everyone can relate to the feeling of not being heard - and coming from a large family myself, with lots of brothers, I remember more than once my mother saying, “Yes, Peter - we heard you the first time.” But this story reminds us that simply receiving the words people say isn’t the same thing as them truly being heard, and more importantly being understood. Sharing our stories and experiences is central to Jacob Two-Two and ultimately what live theatre is all about. Mordecai Richler wrote countless stories and books, leading him to be acknowledged as one of Canada’s best ANDREA MARTIN loved authors. And he was no stranger to the theatre. His Jacob Two-Two books were all Broadway: Exit the King (Drama Desk Award nomination, Outer Critics Circle Award adapted for the stage and premiered at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People in nomination), Young Frankenstein (Tony, Drama Desk Award nominations), Fiddler on the Roof, Toronto. Over the years, the story has also been adapted for television and film. This Oklahoma! (Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle Award nominations); Candide (Tony, Drama afternoon we return to the original story that began it all, and we are honoured to have Desk Award nominations); My Favorite Year (Tony, Drama Desk, Theatre World Awards). the brilliant Andrea Martin here to read it to us. Off-Broadway: The Exonerated, The Vagina Monologues; Encores!: Out of This World; NYSF: The Merry Wives of Windsor, Nude Nude Totally Nude (Drama Desk Award nomination). This season we celebrate our 40th anniversary at the NAC and that means that we have an Regional: Huntington Theatre: The Rose Tattoo, Betty’s Summer Vacation (Elliot Norton and entire generation of audience members who have made live theatre a part of their IRNE Awards); Williamstown Theatre Festival: The Royal Family, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, experience here in Ottawa.
