CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE 2013-14 Report of Gifts 2 NOTE FROM THE CAMPAIGN CHAIRS Note from the CAMPAIGN CHAIRS campaign’s objectives accomplished to date. We then anticipate welcoming a new president to the campus who will begin to develop the vision for the School for the 175th anniversary and beyond. Thank you for Advancing the Legacy! It is nearly time to begin the celebration of the success of Advancing The Legacy – The Campaign for Wyoming Seminary, a success made possible entirely by the generosity of so many people. Because of your dedication to our School and this campaign, Wyoming Seminary has been transformed in significant ways. As the chairs of this campaign, we have been honored to work with so many of you to bring about these new or renovated facilities: • Klassner Field • Lull Tennis Center • Total refurbishment of Nesbitt Memorial Stadium • Allan P. and Marian Sutherland Kirby Center for Creative Arts • Sprague Hall third floor classrooms • Lower School first floor entrance and classrooms • Masonry preservation, new roof and windows in Swetland, Fleck and Darte Halls • Refurbishment of the Kirby Library • Early Childhood Learning Center at Lower School The Louis Maslow STEM School is an important expansion of Wyoming Seminary’s academic program. In addition, many individuals have continued the long Sem tradition of establishing scholarship endowment funds in gratitude for the education they and their family members have received. It is important for all of us to celebrate how this campaign has revitalized Wyoming Seminary and we encourage you to further review these enhancements in the following pages of this report. Now, as we look forward to the official conclusion of the Campaign on June 30, 2015, our colleagues on the Board of Trustees realize that despite all these tremendous physical and programmatic improvements, much remains to be done to continue to enhance and create a campus environment to prepare Sem students for a lifetime of learning in an increasingly global environment. With the retirement of Dr. Kip Nygren on June 30, 2015 and the School’s 175th anniversary only five short years away, the Board of Trustees and the Campaign steering committee have committed to securing the pledges necessary to fully fund the However, we first need to raise the final $2 million necessary to fund all that has taken place over the past eight years. With your continued support, we know we can be successful! Wyoming Seminary has evolved over the past 17 decades as a result of the philanthropic efforts of munificent alumni and friends. These men and women have left their legacy on this important institution of learning. Advancing the Legacy will be a total success if all of us take responsibility for Wyoming Seminary. By what we give and by what we do, we become architects of Sem’s future. We know that with your help, Wyoming Seminary will be in good hands for our grandchildren’s generation and for their grandchildren’s as well. The successful conclusion of this historic campaign is now in sight and we invite you to join with us as we celebrate these significant accomplishments. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for Wyoming Seminary. Sincerely, Richard M. Goldberg ’55 Mary L. Lopatto ’72 Capital Campaign Chairs 1 Advancing ADVANCING THE LEGACY: HOW THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TRANSFORMS LIVES THE LEGACY A Legacy of Academic Accomplishment Wyoming Seminary’s new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program, housed in the Louis Maslow STEM School and now in its third year, is designed to inspire students at both the Upper and Lower Schools to learn more about the natural world and the methods engineers use to develop solutions to the world’s complex issues. To initiate and provide the initial funding for STEM, the family of Louis Maslow has made a large gift in memory of their father and grandfather. Mr. Maslow was a self-taught engineer and inventor who founded InterMetro Industries, a division of Emerson Electric that makes storage and transport systems used in commercial, food service, consumer and healthcare industries. Directed by Sem science faculty member Rachel Bartron, the STEM School provides a STEM Foundations course to all freshmen students and now offers additional courses in robotics (focusing on locomotion, flight, submersibles), applications of differential equations and electrical engineering. The school also provides a lecture series on STEMrelated topics which is free and open to the public, and a Saturday morning interactive program for children in primary and middle school. 2 “ The Kenneth & Caroline Taylor Foundation is proud to support the STEM program at Wyoming Seminary Lower School. We believe that the integration of science and technology into the everyday curriculum enhances our children’s ability to truly embrace these disciplines. By introducing Lower School students to key mathematical and scientific concepts at an early age, we arm our children with a life-long appreciation for the power of science. We hope that these students will be able to more easily integrate and apply this understanding into whatever field of study they choose to pursue. ” -Christina Taylor, The Taylor Foundation ADVANCING THE LEGACY: HOW THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TRANSFORMS LIVES A Legacy of Athletic Accolades Athletics have been a part of the Wyoming Seminary educational program since its earliest days, and the school has been a leader in introducing new sports to the Wyoming Valley. Sem was the first school to offer wrestling, soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse in the area. The school now has three new athletic venues: Klassner Field (2006), Lull Tennis Center (2009) and the renovated Nesbitt Memorial Stadium (2013). Klassner Field, the school’s first turf and artificially lighted field, is used for field hockey and lacrosse. The Lull Tennis Center features six courts and the beautiful Rudin Pavilion. Nesbitt Memorial Stadium, with Antinnes Field, includes two new lighted turf fields and can accommodate football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball. The complex includes a new grandstand and press box. “ With these new fields Wyoming Seminary now has better athletic facilities than any other high school or college in the area. The students are very proud of these beautiful fields and we are seeing more student support for our games, especially for soccer and softball. ” -Karen Klassner, Director of Athletics 3 ADVANCING THE LEGACY: HOW THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TRANSFORMS LIVES A Legacy of Artistic Achievement The new Allan P. and Marian Sutherland Kirby Center for Creative Arts, completed in time for the beginning of the 2014-15 academic year, provides a longneeded, enhanced facility for Sem’s highly regarded dance, music and theater programs. The two-story, 34,652 square foot structure features a 600-seat auditorium, an art gallery, studios, rehearsal halls, classrooms and offices. The F.M. Kirby Foundation provided the $7.5 million lead gift for the $16.3 million project. “ One only needs to review the annual graduating class list to appreciate the numerous students matriculating to some of the top visual and performing arts universities in the country. We wanted to make sure the physical environment was as special as the program. ” -S. Dillard Kirby, president and director, F.M. Kirby Foundation 4 ADVANCING THE LEGACY: HOW THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TRANSFORMS LIVES A Legacy of Transforming Lives Through the generosity of parents, alumni and friends, Wyoming Seminary has made considerable progress toward reaching the total goal of $40 million in support of academic, arts and athletic programs, facilities and endowment. More than $38 million has already been contributed toward the Kirby Center for Creative Arts, the Nesbitt Memorial Stadium, the Maslow STEM School, the Early Childhood Learning Center, renovations to the first floor of Lower School and the third floor of Sprague Hall at Upper School, and other facilities and program enhancements. With the final goal in sight, the school is seeking support to complete the campaign’s objectives, including: • Complete funding for Nesbitt Memorial Stadium • Complete funding for the Kirby Center for Creative Arts • Enhance the school’s financial aid and faculty development endowments Over the years, Wyoming Seminary has grown into a remarkably distinctive independent school with a very complex mission: to serve both young men and women, day and boarding students, toddler through postgraduate, from the Wyoming Valley and from around the world. And in order to continue serving these diverse students and enabling them to make significant contributions to their communities, Sem requires superb teachers and superb facilities and programs. The Advancing the Legacy campaign is an extraordinary opportunity for all who care for and support Wyoming Seminary to ensure that the legacy will indeed continue for future generations. For more information contact John Shafer ’71, Wyoming Seminary Vice President of Advancement, at [email protected] or 570-270-2140. 5 Letter from the LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVANCEMENT VICE PRESIDENT institution at all times but in particular during the period from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. The table seen at the bottom of this page is a comparison of giving for the last five fiscal years. OUTCOMES… Webster’s Dictionary defines “outcome” as 1. a final product or end result; consequence; issue, and 2. a conclusion reached through a process of logical thinking. It can be argued that for 170 years there has been an “outcome” each year as Wyoming Seminary concludes one fiscal year and prepares for the next – there is indeed an end result. As we look back on the 2013 - 14 fiscal year, however, the cumulative outcomes of the past nine years are clearly the result of a process of logical thinking that has put the School on the cusp of concluding its most successful capital campaign ever. Alumni, parents and friends have opened their hearts to Sem, and the school has put their gifts to work – building and renovating facilities across the campuses, and enhancing academics, arts and athletics, all to better serve our students, faculty and parents. You have seen the results to date visually displayed on the preceding pages of this report. On behalf of the entire alumni / development team, I extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for your support of this wonderful The 2013 – 14 campaign represents the fourth most successful fund raising year in the school’s history and marks the first time in history where gift receipts have totaled more than $5 million for four consecutive years. While a great deal of time and volunteer leadership was focused on the capital campaign, we are also pleased that under the leadership of Amy Valli Bennett ’94 and Jeff Metz ’88 we were able to exceed our annual giving goal of $1.2 million. Amy, Jeff and their team, especially the members of the Leadership Gifts Committee, did an outstanding job. Since October 2001, Wyoming Seminary has been approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a “Scholarship Organization” under the guidelines of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program and since August 2012 under the guidelines of the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program. Through these programs, Pennsylvania corporations who pay certain state taxes can make a gift to the scholarship program at Sem in lieu of paying up to 90% of those state taxes if the company makes a two year commitment. More than $450,000 was contributed to these two programs and we are most grateful to the following companies for their support during the current fiscal year: AJO LP, Benco Dental Company, Carr & Duff Inc., Community Bank N. A., Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank, First Keystone Community Bank, First National Bank of Pennsylvania, First National Community Bank, Frontier Communications, Getaways, Inc., Innovation 2 Manufacturing, Koberlein Environmental, Lackawanna Casualty Company, Luzerne Bank, The Martz Group, J. P. Mascaro & Sons, Masonry Preservation Services, Medico Industries, Metz Culinary Management, One Source Staffing Solutions, Penn Security Bank & Trust Company, Petroleum Service Company, PNC Bank, Snyder & Clemente, Sordoni Constructions Services, Straub Metal International, Topp Copy and the United Way of Wyoming Valley. A school like Wyoming Seminary has not been able to grow and develop the way it has, however, by current gifts alone. Indeed many of the gifts that have helped to build the School’s endowment to a market value of $56.7 million on June 30, 2014 have come in the form of bequests and deferred gifts. Since 1982 Wyoming Seminary has received more than $21.5 million in estate gifts. We are honored A FIVE-YEAR GIVING REVIEW 6 2009-10 2010-11 2011-12 2012-13 2013-14 Unrestricted Annual Giving $750, 904 $621,472 $611,978 $584,164 $458,127 Restricted Annual Giving $702,946 $650,979 $643,400 $899,061 $854,041 Total Annual Giving $1,453,850 $1,272,451 $1,255,378 $1,473,255 $1,312,168 Capital/Endowment Giving $1,683,076 $7,098,238 $4,367,692 $4,878,738 $4,638,292 Gifts for All Purposes $3,136,926 $8,370,689 $5,623,070 $6,351,993 $5,950,460 LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVANCEMENT the following alumni and friends continued this legacy during the 2014 fiscal year with bequest distributions coming from each of their estates to Sem: Wayne Clements John Mueller ‘52 Richard Pearsall Marjorie Kniffen Richardson ‘25 As noted in the message from Dick Goldberg and Mary Lopatto, the School’s capital campaign will conclude on June 30, 2015. From the outset, we knew that reaching the ambitious objectives of the campaign would require unprecedented generosity and support from the entire Sem community. We knew that by accomplishing these goals, we would advance Wyoming Seminary to new levels of excellence. As we ask our students to go above and beyond, we now must ask our alumni, parents and friends to help lift Sem from a place of regional prominence into the ranks of the nation’s very finest independent day/boarding schools by helping us to raise $2 million by June 2015 to fully fund all that has been accomplished since the inception of the capital campaign. Thank you – two very simple yet important words. We know that you face tough decisions each year on how to allocate your resources and I want to assure you that the entire Alumni/Development Office staff never takes your gifts for granted. On behalf of the students and faculty who are the ultimate beneficiaries, I express our gratitude and the hope that we will continue to merit your continued support in the years to come. Parente James Revie Patricia Rummage Natalie Solfanelli Laroy Ziegler About the Westlake Society The Westlake Society recognizes those alumni and friends of Wyoming Seminary who have indicated that they have made provisions for a gift to the School in their estate plans, or through membership in The Living Endowment Society. This recognition society was previously known as The Planned Giving Honor Roll, but was renamed in memory of Emory H. Westlake, Class of 1896, in recognition of and with appreciation of his generous bequest to the School in 1996 at the time of the 150th Anniversary Campaign. Mr. Westlake creatively planned his estate in order to maximize his giving to those charities most important to him. Within a few months of the 100th anniversary of his graduation, Mr. Westlake’s bequest created the Westlake Scholarship Endowment Fund at Wyoming Seminary. The School feels his wise use of charitable and estate gift planning is an example for others to emulate. In addition to the names that follow, there are others who have included Wyoming Seminary in their estate plans, but at their request, their names are not listed. 33 ENDOWMENT FUNDS & AWARDS Endowment Funds -------------------- Theodore S.
