Red Sword Guild
Spring 2011
2010 Raleigh Roundup Event Highlights
It was a packed house at the November 12, 2010 Raleigh Round Up. An impressive crowd of 750 people attended the 15th annual fundraiser to “Give Cancer the
Boot!” Champagne and Big Boss Beer greeted guests as they arrived, keeping with
the elegant western décor and fabulous fall colors selected by Raleigh decorator
and Red Sword Guild member, Katherine Connell. The party kicked off strong with
tunes from chart-climbing Americana stars YARN, out of Brooklyn, NY. These
boys could jam and were a real crowd pleaser.
As the Live Auction got underway, cancer survivor, Joe Bell, shared his experience, reminding us why we were there. Joe’s story, along with the generous donations to our Live Auction and the skills of Auctioneer Benjamin Farrell, pushed the
paddles high, raising over $31,000. Jill Marlowe and Jeana Powell did an extraordinary job with the silent auction, securing over 200 donations, and raising
$40,000. Hard work and dedication were evident as Kelly Jones and Jennifer
Roberson stepped up raffle sales, raising $16,800.
Guests dined on tasty fare from 19 chefs from local restaurants who generously
donated their time and culinary talents. Everyone enjoyed casino games, riding
the mechanical bull, and we rounded out the evening with the globetrotting dance
band Party On The Moon. It was easy to see why Donald Trump repeatedly
books them for New Year's Eve. Party On The Moon had a happy crowd up
and moving. Shadowboxes, anyone? Unforgettable!
When the lights went out, the Red Sword Guild had raised over $207,000.00. It
was another step forward in our ongoing battle against cancer. Thank you to our
39 corporate sponsors and to everyone who made the Raleigh Round Up 2010 a
huge success!

In Memory
In April of 2010, the Red Sword Guild chose to
sponsor the St. Timothy’s 5th Annual Spring
Sprint. The 2010 5K was sponsored in memory of
Lisa Ham, who passed away in February 2010
from colon cancer. Lisa began her career at St.
Timothy’s as head of their afterschool program

and later became head of development for St.
&
Timothy's. She was well known in the community
for her work in the Junior League, her strong
leadership at First Presbyterian Church, and her
ability to juggle work, family, and friends with
the greatest of ease. Lisa was known for her

perseverance and for getting the job done. Many
members of the Guild continue to miss Lisa but
are proud to be able to continue our mission of
fighting cancer.
The VIP Treatment
An invitation complete with rhinestone studded boots let our VIP sponsors know they were in for
an elegant evening to give cancer the boot. The newly renovated Woman’s Club building was upscale and stylish and filled with scrumptious hors d’oeuvres thanks to the very generous contribution of Kevin and Stacy Jennings, owners of Urban Food Group. VIP guests were treated to an art
gallery atmosphere with original paintings from Art Source on
every wall. Flower arrangements for the event were provided by
Catherine Merriman of RaleighOrchids.com. Best of all, bartenders awaited guests at a bar stocked with fine wines, French
champagne and of course, special beers which were graciously
provided by Harris Wholesale.
The real highlight of the night was the comments of featured
speaker, Dr. Andrew Kennedy, Radiation Oncologist and codirector of Oncology Services at Wake Radiology. Dr. Kennedy
shared real life examples of the research funded by grants from
the American Cancer Society. His stories and his passion for his
work reminded us all of why we do what we do for Raleigh
Roundup.
At the end of the night, Betsy Davis, ACS Community Manager,
paid tribute to this year’s Society Award recipients: Duke RaDr. Andrew Kennedy
leigh Hospital, Duke Realty, SciQuest and Wake Radiology.
These businesses contributed $10,000 or more to the American Cancer Society in one calendar
year. Betsy also presented a special thank you award to Urban Food Group for their continued
support of the Raleigh Roundup. Thanks to Urban Food Group for hosting this years VIP event at
the fresh and updated Woman’s Club. Many thanks to the VIP committee members for all of their
work to make the guests feel welcome and appreciated at such a lovely event!

Your Contributions
The annual dues for the Red Sword Guild go directly to a
children’s cancer fund. In 2010 we donated $1000 each to
Angela’s Angels, Duke Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation, Kids Cancer and Edenton Street care of Ella Newmiller.
If you have suggestions for future donations please let a
co-chair or board member know.
In 2010 your efforts have allowed for more research, and
more patient programs in the state of North Carolina. We
served 15,668 patients with over 39,974 direct services in
such programs as Look Good… Feel Better, Road to Recovery, Reach to Recovery, I Can Cope, Hope Lodge, and in
providing wigs, turbans, bra’s and hats.
There are a total of 4 Cancer Resource Centers throughout
the state of North Carolina that were opened in 2010. The
Hope Lodge in Greenville, NC provided 6,624 nights of
lodging to 359 guest. The total savings to guest was an
estimated $993,600 based on what guest would have paid
for similar accommodations near their treatment centers.
The Red Sword Guild strives to put all
donor dollars to work for the American
Cancer Society.

The Spirit of the Guild Award
Over 150 Red Sword Guild volunteers work countless hours
each year to create the Raleigh Round Up. To recognize the
dedication and commitment of its members, the Red Sword
Guild Board gives a special award to the member who has
gone above and beyond in her commitment and who truly
represents the “Spirit of the Guild.” This year, the choice
was clear. Who participated in a manner that reflected what
“the Spirit” meant? Who gave their time and talent with
enthusiasm and grace, without expectations or conditions?
Amy Brinley did!
Amy co-chaired the print committee, which requires many
hours, strong organizational skills and a painstaking attention to detail, with grace and a giving attitude. Amy was
always positive and happy to take on whatever was thrown
her way, and she routinely offered to help without being
asked. She approached her commitment to this position
and to the Raleigh Round Up with excellence and a smile.
Amy exemplified the true Spirit of the Guild.

Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, and donors who put on, gave
to, and supported The Red Sword Guild’s Raleigh Roundup 2010 benefitting The American Cancer Society. As Red Sword Guild’s President, it was
a joy to work with Whitney Zinner and Ashley White who are truly amazing leaders-smart, dedicated, passionate and so very giving. Our generous sponsors, talented chefs, hardworking Red Sword Guild volunteers,
and many donors and supporters once again put on what is becoming
known as the most fabulous and successful charity event in town. Raleigh Roundup 2010 raised over $200,000 for The American Cancer Society. We are proud to support The American Cancer Society as it funds
cancer research in hopes of one day finding a cure while providing education and patient services to those in need.
I am honored to have been a Red Sword Guild member for many years
and to have served as President this past year. We are lucky to have
Mary Beth Paulson as Red Sword Guild President for 2011 and Pam Howard and Lee Ashley Bonfield chairing Raleigh Roundup 2011. Please save
the date for the fabulous Raleigh Roundup 2011- Friday, November 11th.
11/11/11 promises to be something really special!
