While Rosh Hashanah commemorates the
creation of the world, it is also a time of
introspection when we think about our priorities
in life, when we ask questions about our actions
during the previous year, when we think about
what we hope to achieve.
As my term as National President comes to an end, I am
proud to report that our chapters across Canada continue
to rise ever higher to the goals they have set for themselves
– to raise the essential funds so that all Israelis will have the
best medical equipment.
Canadian Magen David Adom’s hope is to achieve its goal of
continuing to provide Magen David Adom Israel with vital
lifesaving medical equipment and supplies but this can only
be accomplished with your help. In today’s challenging
times, your support is needed more than ever. Israel cannot
survive without MDA and MDA cannot survive without you.
On behalf of the National Board of Directors, may you and
your families be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

espérons réaliser.
Alors que mon mandat de président touche à sa fin, je suis
fier d’annoncer que nos sections à travers le Canada
continuent de progresser et même de dépasser les objectifs
qu’elles s’étaient fixées, c’est à dire de collecter des fonds
suffisants afin que les Israéliens bénéficient des meilleurs
équipements médicaux.
Magen David Adom Canada espère atteindre son objectif en
continuant à fournir à Magen David Adom Israël les
équipements et les fournitures médicales essentielles pour
sauver des vies. Mais ceci ne peut se réaliser sans votre
participation.

MDA Israel’s top echelon visit Montreal
I
n the beginning of July, the
National Office of Canadian
Magen David Adom (CMDA)
hosted Eli Bin, MDA Israel’s
Director General, Alon Fridman, IMDA’s Director of Logistics, and Amnon Halper,
Universal Motors International (UMI).
The short but intense visit included a tour and meeting at
Demers Ambulances in Beloeil, Quebec. Demers is one
of the two ambulance manufacturers for Magen David
Adom in Israel. Demers is the
manufacturer for all ambulances purchased by CMDA,
United Kingdom IMDA, Australia IMDA and France
IMDA.
The group also attended a
CMDA National Board meeting and visited the head offices of Urgences Santé, Que-
bec’s emergency 24/7 ambulance service where they met
with Nicola D’Ulysse, President and Director General,
and David Sasson, Communications Director. Joining them
was André Champage, a consultant with Demers. Eli Bin
and Alon Fridman were able
to witness first hand how Urgences Santé responds when
they joined Mr. Sasson on an
emergency call.

in the brief spare time they
had, were able to squeeze in a
tour of Old Montreal.
Although the visitors were
only here for a few days, it
provided the much-needed
opportunity for them to learn
more about CMDA’s functions
and an insight into how other
emergency services operate.

‘We are on our way home...’
ith those words, MDA
Director General Eli Bin
reported that 34 victims of the
terrorist attack against a bus of
Israeli tourists in Burgas, Bulgaria,
were returning to Israel on an
Israeli Defense Forces plane. Five
Israelis were killed in the attack.

In the wake of the attack, MDA
immediately mobilized a special
delegation headed by Eli Bin, Professor Gabi Barbash, Director of
Tel Aviv’s Yichilov Medical Center, more than 20 paramedics and
doctors, and representatives from
the Foreign Ministry.
On arrival in Burgas, the MDA
delegation was met by members
of the Bulgarian Red Cross and
immediately taken to the hospital
where they were able to evaluate

the severity of the injuries and
assess the timeframe for returning the injured to Israel.
Most of the wounded were suffering from orthopedic injuries and
shrapnel wounds. All had received
medical treatment and surgery
where necessary and were listed
in stable condition.
Once it was determined that the
wounded could be flown back to
Israel, volunteers from the Bulgarian Red Cross helped coordinate the drive to the airport. As a
token of appreciation for the cooperation and help given, the director of the Burgas hospital, was
presented with a small MDA flag.
Immediately upon landing in
Israel, the wounded were transferred to ambulances and taken to
medical centers closest to their
residences.

expressed his gratitude to the doctors and emergency staff in Bulgaria. By virtue of MDA’s
membership in the International
Red Cross, MDA was able to
quickly and efficiently respond to
the attack and coordinate the
treatment of the Israeli tourists.
Condolences were extended to the
families of those who were killed
in the attack.

Lifesaver
When you are trying to save a life, minutes
count. Thanks to their ability to maneuver
through heavy traffic and narrow streets,
Canadian Magen David Adom’s three-wheeled
scooters are very often first on the scene.
EACH SCOOTER IS:
• clearly identified as an
emergency vehicle and is
equipped with a siren and
a revolving red light;
• driven by a qualified
paramedic;
• an adapted ambulance
with high-tech equipment
including an Automated
External Defibrillator and
a portable oxygen tank.
Of the 175 scooters in the
MDA fleet, 22 have been
purchased by Canadian
Magen David Adom donors.
The cost for each fullyequipped scooter is
$25,000 and we are
now raising funds to
purchase seven more in
the coming year.

Chapter will be conducting a Rosh Hashanah Telephone
Campaign, the goal being to raise funds to purchase a rescue
ready Semi-Auto External Defibrillator. This essential piece
of equipment, used by all MDA first responders, can
calculate the heart rate and provide shocks as required.

Major fundraising
event being planned
The dedicated members of the Winnipeg Chapter of CMDA
believe that “whoever saves a life has saved an entire
world.” They are hard at work planning what promises to be
a major fundraising event that will serve as the launch of
the Winnipeg Chapter Ambulance Drive.
“We are very excited about this,” said Rebeca Kuropatwa,
the contact person for the Winnipeg Chapter. “We are
putting the necessary sponsorships into place and hope to
be able to make a public announcement very soon.”
In addition to the major event being worked on, other
events are also being planned.

Taking advantage of a trip to
Vancouver, Daniel Amzallag,
CMDA’s National Youth Representative, was able to attend
a number of activities in Calgary. Organized by William
Katz, who had been a participant in the MDA Overseas Volunteer Program and was now
living in Calgary, Daniel visited
the Calgary Jewish Academy
(CJA) where he addressed
grades 6 through 12 students.

of Jewish identity, “tzedakah” /
generosity and “gemilut hassadim” / helping others.
In keeping with these values,
Student Council Advisor, Alex
Kouperman, explained that after listening to Daniel’s story
and receiving the green light
from the administration, the
students chose to raise funds
for Canadian Magen David
Adom. “We sold treats and we
did a Pie Day in which students
purchased cream pies and
threw them at the Student
Council”. While messy, it was
obviously a great success as
reflected by the very generous
donation of close to $800.00
received by Canadian Magen
David Adom. Daniel then vis-

a favourite target on Pie Day.
The highlight of the events in
Calgary was culminated at an
evening attended by more than
100 people in which Daniel related his personal story – how
he decided to volunteer for
MDA after having suffered an
injury as a result of a terrorist
attack in Kfar Saba. The audience was so moved that they
immediately began to raise
funds for CMDA – a fitting
tribute to Daniel and to Magen
David Adom.

The June luncheon included a
presentation by Daniel on “Mass
Casualty Incidents in Israel” and
was accompanied by several
films. Daniel’s powerful presentation was graciously received
by the Christian Friends who are
committed and loyal supporters
of Israel. The luncheon was a
great success and created important connections with key
leaders in media and with organizations such as Bridges for
Peace, International Christian
Embassy, and Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship.

to Thomas Buchenauer for hosting the second successful Christian Friends luncheon and to
Daniel for his time and efforts in

Vancouver Talmud Torah’s “Mitzvah of valuing philanthropy” program
odeled after a program in the

United States that teacher,
Sari Weintraub had heard about,
the “Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy Program” (MVP) encourages
12 and 13 year old students to
learn about Tikkun Olam and to realize that becoming Jewish adults
comes with responsibilities. Students experience this by finding out
which agencies need help and then
granting money through acts of
Tzedakah and Chesed. They learn
invaluable lessons and what the
saying “Whoever has saved a
life…has saved an entire world” re-
ally means. Not a day goes by in Israel when Magen David Adom is
not called upon to help save a life
and bring a new life into the world.
Grade 7 students, Joshua Bugis and
Lis Grinfeld nominated Canadian
Magen David Adom (CMDA). They
then had to convince their classmates to donate to their chosen
charity. Of the more than 20 charities selected by the students,
CMDA tied as the cause that received the most support. This initiative has resulted in a donation of
$800.00 for the purchase of an
Emergency Oxygen Tank Kit.

Ambulance Dedication
Family and friends joined Joyce Raymond in Israel during
Passover for the dedication of an ambulance in honor of her
late husband, Harry z”l. Following the ceremony, which was
held at the Jerusalem MDA station, the guests were able to
explore the ambulance’s interior and were provided with
explanations about the lifesaving equipment used to treat
the sick and wounded.

Ambassador of CMDA’s Hamilton Chapter, will
be embarking on a campaign to raise funds for a
third rapid response emergency scooter.
Because of its size and easy maneuverability, the scooter,
which is driven by a qualified MDA paramedic, is very often
first on the scene of an accident. Minutes can save lives
and you can do your part by contributing to Hamilton’s

Toronto students get involved
Toronto-area students are becoming more familiar with Magen
David Adom, thanks to projects initiated by their teachers. Two
such students are Avi Ironi and Danny Sigesmund.
Avi is a grade 4 student at Associated Hebrew Schools. “I was
assigned a project to teach my class about a charity that has
touched my heart. I chose your charity because you help
everyone around the world…I used glow sticks to show
equipment that you have.”
Danny, a grade 5 student at the Leo Baeck Day School, wrote “I
was assigned a project to teach my class about Magen David
Adom…For my event, I did a game where my classmates had to
find a word that I chose out of a list of five words. Then they
had to spell it with foam letters. I’m glad I got a chance to
teach my class about Magen David Adom.”
