Here it is–fall already. Hard to believe isn’t it? It is always a shocker,
when there is a 30 degree temperature difference in one day, but not
surprising for us in Minnesota. Anyway—after a long, hot, summer, I
have to admit, a change in seasons is a breath of fresh air.
Speaking of a change of seasons, I just read something fascinating about
the bamboo plant. It apparently takes advantage of each season, and is
the fastest growing plant in the world. In fact, in his book, “A Daily Dose of Sanity,”
Alan Cohen mentions that bamboo can actually grow six inches or more in a day. Wow!
That is amazing. “One of the clever adaptive qualities of bamboo is that it grows its
leaves in the summer and its roots in the winter. It takes advantage of each season, and
while it appears dormant, it is not. The roots grown in winter prepare for rapid branch
and leaf development in summer. We, too, go through seasons, all of which afford us
opportunities for different kinds of growth. In a prosperous economic season, there is a
lot of building and external expansion. When an economic winter comes, with little
activity in the outer world, that is the time for inner deepening.”1 Does this sound
familiar to you?
As many of you know, this year has been another unpredictable year, with many ups and
downs. While the economy is getting better, it is still unstable. I’ve talked with a number
of remodelers, who have said the same thing. Some mentioned they’ve adjusted and like
the fact that they have a little more freedom and have more time to do things they enjoy.
As for me, I have my own personal story.
I don’t know how many of you out there follow my blog, but if you do, you’ve probably
noticed that I periodically post recipes. Since I was a child, I always enjoyed baking and
cooking and when I started blogging in 2007, it seemed natural for me to incorporate
recipes, since we sell countertops for kitchens and people love recipes. As my recipe blogs
started accumulating over the years, I started talking about creating a cookbook that
included my favorite recipe blogs, and donating any profits made to charity. While I
liked the idea, I always seemed to be too busy for the project, but kept the idea in my
thoughts.
Earlier this year, our oldest daughter participated in a Mission Trip to Haiti, which she
heard about from a friend on Facebook. While I was apprehensive about her trip, I knew
it would be an experience of a life-time. When she returned, we heard stories that were
both heart-warming and heart breaking. I have to admit, I had no idea how poor the
country is and how little they have, and it got me thinking.
Remember I told you I kept my cookbook idea in my thoughts? After my daughter’s
trip, I put 2 and 2 together and got my inner deepening on. The result is a cookbook I
put together, titled, Indulge 101 Recipe Favorites. You can read more about it in,
“Cooking For A Cause,” on page 3. I hope you check it out. All profits made from the
cookbook will be donated to the organization, Healinghaiti.org. The cookbook features
some great recipes, and can be purchased on our website—just in time for Christmas gifts!

Pheasant…
opener was last weekend. If you are a hunter and you did not know
that—I feel sorry for you. As far as bird count goes, last season may
have been the lowest of my entire life, as the bird count was way
down. However this season is much better than last, but still down
compared to most years. Regardless of the bird count, it is definitely
worth getting out there. It’s incredible to see a good bird dog work! The first day we
scared-up five roosters and two hens. Of course the hens, “un-shootable” by law, were
close enough for an easy kill, and the roosters were much too far away. The second
day we scared-up only one rooster. Unfortunately, one of my hunting buddies forgot
where his safety was located. He’s a family member, so I have to forgive him
eventually – right?

Deer…
season is upon us. I have been bow hunting a few times and have seen many deer.
Unfortunately there are very few people on this planet that are accurate beyond 40
yards, so I haven’t shot a $25 arrow yet. What is cool about bow hunting is that there
are just not many people out there, and you get to go Camo so no one knows you’re
there; unless you forgot to put your cell phone on vibrate! It’s a wonderful time for
peace, silence, and reflection, but at the same time I would sure like to plug that
8-pointer I saw 160 yards away!
I’m almost ready for shotgun season. We (me and the same guy who missed the
pheasant…Hmmm) built a brand-new stand 16 feet high that should be quite comfortable. Unfortunately the 17 acres of corn to the south of it has already been harvested—that can change things, but a pessimistic hunter is not a hunter for long.
Before opener, I will harvest a third of my 6 acres that remains standing to provide
sightlines for a different kind of harvest… venison!

Politics…
It appears that the state of Minnesota is going to decide what marriage is - interesting.
I always thought that was obvious. I guess we’ll find out how ignorant I am.
I am too smart to use this column to tell you what or who to vote for. However I will
tell you that if my venison stew doesn’t turn out good, I change the recipe. So the
question is, “How good has your venison stew been the last four years?”

Get CookinG For A CAuse
Cookbook Project allows opportunity to give Back
What does a passion for cooking, a mission trip, and an organization dedicated to helping the poor have in common?
Well—in this case, a thought that manifested into a project I am calling, Cooking for a Cause.
Since I was a young child, I always enjoyed baking and cooking. While I like food preparation, what makes me really feel good, is the joy it brings to others, especially when I see someone indulging in something they really like.
I also have many blessings in my life, including a wonderful husband and family and wanted
to be able to give back to help others. As Americans, we all are very blessed. We have our freedom and many amenities that other countries do not. My hope is for people to purchase this
cookbook, to enjoy the recipes, and at the same time, help the people of Haiti to indulge in
basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter, things often taken for granted. Please help
make this project a success, by telling others. In turn, you will be spreading our abundance.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. People live in extreme
poverty with no clean water, electricity, toilets, and little food. Many live in
shacks for housing, and garbage can be found everywhere. “Healing Haiti” is a
non-profit charitable organization that was established in 2006. It is faith based
and is dedicated to serving the poor, and the disadvantaged.
