Siskin Hospital is proudly celebrating our 20th
Anniversary this year! February 15, 2010
marked the hospital’s official anniversary,
and we are proud of the accomplishments
of our caring staff, as well as the thousands
of patients we have been privileged to serve
throughout the past 20 years.
In 1990, Siskin Hospital opened its doors as a
62-bed inpatient hospital. Today, with 109 beds,
the hospital offers a wide spectrum of services,
from intensive inpatient treatments to an
outpatient pavilion with a variety of specialized
programs, to a fully accessible fitness center
where the disabled and able-bodied work out
together.
The same vision and generosity that built Siskin
Hospital continues to help us provide the best
possible physical rehabilitation programs and
services today. Support from generous donors
like you enables us to move forward with new
technology and equipment, while making it
possible to provide thousands of dollars in
charity care for patients in need. To make a
donation in honor of Siskin Hospital’s 20th
Anniversary, please visit the website at
www.SiskinRehab.org or call 423.634.1208.
We are encouraging everyone to donate
$20 for 20 years!!
We have been privileged to serve the
Chattanooga community by providing hope
and inspiration to our patients and their families
everyday. Thank you for 20 wonderful years,
and we look forward to serving the community
for many years to come.

Turning
hope into
a bright
future
by Lindsay Wyatt
As we embark on 20 years of Caring People. Changing Lives., our staff is continually
touched by patients who become more like family...part of who we are and the
reason why we come to work everyday to better the lives of those around us. These
four patients have remarkable recovery stories that are a true testament, not only
to their hard work and perseverance, but also to believing that a little hope is all
you need to start on a path to a brighter future.

usic has always been a big part of my life. So, when I had my
motorcycle accident, the first thing I checked was my hands. When I knew
they were okay, I knew I could still play my saxophone, and that meant the world
to me.
However, when I learned I lost my leg, my world was suddenly thrown out of
rhythm. That’s when Siskin Hospital taught me that nothing sounds sweeter than
hope. I have been playing melodies all my life, but none of them could compare
with the comforting sounds of encouragement, perseverance, and accomplishment
the staff at Siskin Hospital provided me.

The way their team works together with a patient is a harmony unlike any other.
With their help, I learned to walk again and was right back into the rhythm of life.
Today, I am still playing my music and living life to the fullest. Thanks to Siskin
Hospital, I never lost my song and I am going to continue to be all I can be.”
- A.B. Barnes
rowing up, I spent every weekend at the racetrack, dreaming of
racing like my dad. As an adult, my passion for racing continued to drive
me each time I got behind the wheel. However, when a construction accident
left me paralyzed from the waist down, my dream came to a screeching halt.
I came to Siskin Hospital hoping to defy the odds. I knew the harder I worked,
the better I would get. The therapists there helped me to do more than anyone
thought possible. Their encouragement helped fuel my determination and
desire to succeed, both on and off the track. My dream of getting back behind
the wheel was coming true.
Today, I’m racing again, but this time as a paraplegic. Once in the racecar, I am
no different than anyone else. Now, everything that I’m able to do is a blessing,
an opportunity, and a possibility.
Thanks to God, my family, and the caring staff at Siskin Hospital, there is
nothing holding me back except my imagination.”

fter a tornado ripped through his college campus at
Union University, David Wilson was trapped under
28 feet of debris for almost five hours. Severe crush injuries
in both legs left him wondering if he would ever walk again...
David’s future was uncertain.
“I’ve often said there were incredibly helpless weeks where we
felt we had no control over it and couldn’t do anything, but God
put people in front of us that never let us lose hope. One of the
incredible things about Siskin Hospital is that the entire culture
is built around giving people hope,” Mark Wilson, David’s
father, described.
Despite the odds, David began making remarkable progress
while at Siskin Hospital.
David Wilson
“One of my fondest memories was when he left here. People
that had worked with us lined the lobby and the balcony...they
stood and clapped and cheered as he walked out. It must be
good for them to be able to say we make a difference in people’s
lives and we help them when they don’t have any help,” Mark
explained.
“I just don’t have any way to express the gratitude for a place
like Siskin Hospital that is full of people that care.”

hat a difference 24 hours
can make in your life. The day
after Meg’s fourth birthday, she was
playing with her sister and fell over face
down in the yard. When we picked her
up, she could not hold her head up, so we
rushed her to the hospital.
Of course, we made the choice to come
to Siskin Hospital. They did things like
horseback riding, fun playful things that
four-year-old little girls do. We really felt
like, ‘she is going to get through this.’
Siskin Hospital is a Godsend...a lifeline to
us. I will forever be very much connected
to Siskin Hospital, because this is where
her new life began.

Myth 1: There’s no point to exercising… I’m going
to get old anyway.
Myth 3: Exercise puts me at risk of falling down.
Myth 2: Elderly people shouldn’t
exercise... they should save their
strength and rest.
Fact: Research shows that a
sedentary lifestyle
is unhealthy for
the elderly. Period.
4
Fact: Regular exercise, by building strength and stamina,
prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance, actually
reducing your risk of falling.
Myth 4: It’s too late… I’m already too old to start
exercising.
Fact: You’re never too old to exercise! If you’ve never
exercised before, or it’s been a while, start with light
walking and other gentle activities.
Myth 5: I’m disabled… I can’t exercise sitting down.
Fact: Chair-bound people face special challenges, but can
lift light weights, stretch, and do chair aerobics to increase
range of motion, improve muscle tone, and promote
cardiovascular health.

Inactivity often causes seniors to lose the ability to do
things on their own and can lead to more hospitalizations,
doctor visits, and use of medicines for illnesses.

There are many myths about older adults and exercise.
Here are a few reasons why a loved one might avoid
exercise, along with the actual facts regarding exercise:
Siskin Hospital is able
to help patients regain
their lives every day. Visit

You never think of a healthy child having
a stroke. One minute, they’re perfectly
healthy, seconds later, it’s devastating.
Seniors should exercise too!
Fact: Exercise and strength training helps you look and
feel younger and stay active longer. Regular physical
activity lowers your risk for a variety of conditions,
including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease,
diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure,
and obesity.

Each year, Siskin Hospital participates in
National Rehabilitation Week to celebrate
the field we work in, to educate others and
ourselves about this field and to recognize the many individuals whose
lives have been touched by physical medicine and rehabilitation. This year
our theme for the week of fun and festivities will be our 20th Birthday, and
we plan to host a Birthday Reunion Celebration. All former patients,
current and retired staff members, volunteers, vendors and donors are
invited to attend on Tuesday, September 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. Please
join us for this exciting time to remember
the wonderful things that have happened
at Siskin Hospital in the last 20 years.
Refreshments will be served, and you will have
the opportunity to meet some of the patients
and/or family members featured in our
current television commercials.

Thompson chosen as Clinical
Carlos Thompson, a Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant at Siskin
Hospital, was recently voted the Clinical Instructor of the Year by the
Chattanooga State Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) Program. On May
6, a Clinical Instructor Luncheon was held at the new Health Science
Center on the Chattanooga State campus. Cindy Birchell, Academic
Coordinator of Clinical Instruction, presented the award to
Thompson, who is a graduate of the PTA program at
Chattanooga State Community College.
Determination of this award is by nomination from
students, academic clinical faculty, and the Association
of Community and Continuing Education. Recognition
is given to a Clinical Instructor who had demonstrated
exceptional efforts on behalf of clinical education with
Chattanooga State students during the previous year.
“Carlos has been a faithful Clinical Instructor for many
years. Having been an excellent student and graduate
from our PTA program, he is very aware of the need for
quality Clinical Instructors to help students apply skills they
have learned in the classroom/laboratory and to learn new
innovative techniques,” Laura Warren, PT, MS, Associate Professor
and PTA Program Director at Chattanooga State, said.
Thompson has worked at Siskin Hospital since 1990, and was able to
6
Instructor of the Year
complete his degree from Chattanooga State while working full
time and raising a family. Thompson’s passion for excellence
in physical therapy and instruction provides students with the
opportunity to excel in their education and establish
necessary skills for quality patient care. Students commented
at the Clinical Instructor Luncheon that Thompson is a great
teacher who has a gentle way of correcting mistakes while
learning.
“While being a Clinical Instructor does provide contact
hours for continuing competency, which is a state
requirement for re-licensure, Carlos takes his
professional responsibility very seriously. We
appreciate Siskin Hospital’s historically strong support
of our students through clinical education,” Warren
stated.
“Siskin Hospital has a good working partnership with
Chattanooga State. Most of our PTAs are graduates of
Chattanooga State. The success we jointly share with them
is due to the professionalism of Carlos and the other PTAs
who participate as Clinical Instructors, because they believe in
what they do and do it well,” Aileen San Luis, Siskin Hospital
Inpatient Physical Therapy Supervisor, stated.
