EXPANSIVE READING
Dear Teacher,
Intensive and extensive reading have been the two
major approaches to reading for a long time. But
Black Cat readers use an exciting new approach
which we call EXPANSIVE READING.
Expansive reading goes beyond the text to expand
learning in many directions. Apart from activities
which check comprehension, and provide practice in
the four skills, structures and vocabulary building,
Black Cat readers offer:
• Beautiful illustrations and dramatised
recordings, which aid understanding of the text
and create stimulus to read.
• Detailed explanations of the cultural background
of the text.
• Cultural comparisons and analysis of film
versions.
• Cross-curricular links, reflecting the value
now given to Content and Language Integrated
Learning (CLIL).
• Projects on the web exploiting the Internet’s
resources to the full.
• Exam-style activities to help prepare students
for international language qualifications.
• Audio CD-ROMs for selected titles which ensure
entertaining learning.
The Complete Selection
Many GREEN APPLE and READING & TRAINING
titles are accompanied by audio CD/CD-ROMs. These
include both an audio section and a computer section.
These titles contain fun and stimulating games and
activities which can be accessed only by inserting the
CD into the computer CD-ROM drive. In addition you
can listen to a full, dramatised recording of the text on
any CD player.
The audio CD-ROMs are an important component of
the expansive reading approach used in Black Cat
readers, which goes beyond the text to expand the
reading and learning experience in many directions.
The audio CD-ROMs can be used at school – in the
computer laboratory or on an interactive whiteboard –
and/or as a fun self-study resource at home.

Eylem Coklu, Teacher, Turkey
GREEN APPLE is a series of lavishly illustrated
graded readers especially designed for young
teenagers. Many of the readers are adaptations of
classic stories, but there are also some original
stories and non-fiction readers.
The readers are graded into three levels – Starter,
Step 1 and Step 2 – according to structural and
lexical criteria, as well as the suitability of the
subject matter for the different age groups. The
lexis contained in the readers is checked against the
vocabulary lists specified for the Cambridge ESOL
exams; Flyers and KEY for the readers at Starter and
Step 1 levels and PRELIMINARY for those at Step 2.

Tragedy
Love
‘Hail, Macbeth who will be king one
day.’
On a cold Scottish heath, three
witches make a prophecy. Inspired
by their words and encouraged by
his evil wife, Macbeth begins his trail
of destruction to gain and keep the
Scottish throne.
Nobody can remember why the
Capulet family and the Montague
family hate each other but the feud
is longstanding and brutal. When
Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague
meet and fall in love the result is
tragic, and peace between the two
families is only possible after the
death of many people.

Sherlock Holmes is the world’s
only consulting detective. He helps
Scotland Yard to solve mysteries they
can’t solve. Surely no-one can defeat
Sherlock Holmes... or can they?
Was Nostradamus really a prophet
or were his predictions a mere
coincidence? What mystery lies
behind the curse of the tomb of the
Egyptian pharaoh King Tut? Can an
exquisite diamond bring death and
tragedy to its owners? Does evil really
exist and what forms can it take?
Lemuel Gulliver tells the story of his
fantastic adventures on the island of
Lilliput where the people are tiny and
their self-importance laughable; in
Brobdingnag where the people are
giants and Gulliver is made to feel
his own insignificance; in Laputa, the
land of futile science; and finally in
the land of the Houyhnhnms, where
horses are endowed with reason
while human beings are not.
In this collection of short stories,
Holmes comes face to face with some
of his most difficult challenges and his
main rival, Professor Moriarty.

In 1806, Captain Frederick Wentworth
and Miss Anne Elliot fell in love, but
since neither of them had any money,
Anne’s friend Lady Russell persuaded
her not to marry the Captain. Years
later, Anne and Frederick meet again.
By this time Frederick has made
a fortune in the Navy, but he is still
angry with Anne for rejecting him.
This is the most delicate and moving
love story Jane Austen ever wrote.

Mrs Morel is a strong, intelligent,
domineering woman. Her marriage
to a miner is not a happy one. She is
antagonistic to her husband and gives
all her love to her sons. The Morel's
younger son, Paul, grows up close to his
mother. As an adolescent and a young
man, he is torn between a passionate
love for his mother and his lovers
Miriam and then Clara.
Dr Manette is falsely imprisoned for 18
years by the Marquis of Evrémonde.
He is eventually released and goes to
England to join his daughter Lucie,
who marries the Frenchman Charles
Darnay of the Evrémonde family.
During the Reign of Terror Darnay
travels to Paris where he is imprisoned
and sentenced to be executed...
Baptista’s two beautiful daughters are
ready for marriage. Bianca, pursued
in love by three different suitors,
cannot marry until someone dares
to marry her sister, the proud and
contemptuous Katharine. Then
Petruchio arrives in Padua and
proposes to Katharine. Will he be able
to turn her into a model of devotion
and obedience?
The Durbeyfield family are poor and
simple people, but their ancestors
were the mighty d’Urbervilles, an
ancient and noble family. When the
Durbeyfields meet with misfortune,
they send their eldest daughter, Tess,
to visit her wealthy cousin and ask
for help, but the wealthy cousin has
a young son, Alec Stoke-d’Urberville,
who finds Tess very attractive…

Elinor and Marianne Dashwood
are sisters. Both are intelligent,
sensitive, charming and beautiful,
but there the similarities end. Elinor
values propriety and common
sense; Marianne, by contrast, has
extravagant Romantic ideas. In this
brilliant novel, Jane Austen explores
two different ways of thinking and
acting – the ‘sense’ of Elinor and the
‘sensibility’ of Marianne – as they try
to find happiness in a world full of
hypocrisy, vulgarity, and self-interest.

Today we know a lot about faraway
places. But the first explorers knew
nothing about where they were going.
Their courage and determination drove
them to explore the unknown, facing
terrible dangers and hardships.
Our planet is full of natural wonders:
the forests, which are home to millions
of species; the oceans, which cover
three quarters of its surface; and the
Polar regions and deserts, which have
adapted to extreme climatic conditions.
They have existed for thousands of
years, but these environments and the
plants and animals which live in them
are changing.
