The ride, which is in its 7th year, raises money for specialized end of life care and grief support for people in our community facing a life limiting illness. Hospice of Davidson County, a United Way agency, accepts patients regardless of their ability to pay and relies heavily on community support to provide those services. This year’s ride will be held on Saturday, July 19th, 2014. The ride, escorted by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department, departs from Denton FarmPark, 1072 Cranford Road in Denton, at 10:45 a.m. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. for registration. Pre-registration is $15.00 with $5.00 for a double rider. Same day registration is $20.00 with $5.00 for a double rider. Lunch is included with registration. Anyone interested in placing an “In Memory Of” listing or placing a business ad on the back of our official Ride for Angels t-Shirt can call (336) 475-5444 for details. There will also be a memorial wall on site for attendees to place mementos or notes in memory of a loved one. Entertainment will be provided by KOOL 1440 AM 99.9FM. There will be drawings for prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Last year’s event had over 500 riders, volunteers, community supporters and staff members in attendance. These supporters, along with our sponsors, helped raise a record $19,800 to provide medical services, emotional, and spiritual support to those in our community, faced with a terminal illness, and their families. Thanks to the sponsors of this year’s 7th Ride for Angels event: Younts Insurance and Wake Forest Baptist Health / Lexington Medical Center. T-shirt sponsors include Younts Insurance, Creative Carpets and Holladay Surgical Supply. Additional information, regarding registration and t-shirt ads, is available online at www.hospiceofdavidson.org. Inquires can also be directed to Tammy Troublefield, LPTA, Community Outreach Coordinator at (336) 596-9098 or [email protected]. From the Desk of Laura Owen, CEO . . . In early May my husband and I joined several dozen farm, horticulture, historic preservation and outdoor enthusiasts for the 7th annual, Rural Roots Tour. Conducted by the Tourism Recreation Investment Partnership (TRIP), a nonprofit foundation focused on enhancing our county’s tourism and recreation infrastructure, we had the opportunity to tour six farms and stop at several other historical properties located throughout the county. Our destination farm locations were diverse, ranging in practice from the traditional to high tech, from sustainable organic to genetically modified producers and owners coming from a long lineage of farmers to the newly retired urban dwellers investing significant resources in a new venture. It was a great overview of the new farming movement taking place in Davidson County. As unique as each farm was, what I found equally interesting was what the owners had in common. During the tour, farm owners shared information about their marketing and strategic plans, conveyed a high level of education about new and innovative farming models, and indicated their reliance on data to manage operational decisions. They also shared in their commitment to preserve the past while integrating new practices to enhance the quality of life for their families and the community. Looking back on the day, I couldn’t help to notice the relevance of their work to ours at Hospice of Davidson County. Daily we rely on data to manage our operations, continually monitor changes in the healthcare and hospice environment, and rely on our collective expertise to provide clinical, emotional, spiritual and bereavement services. And, as we prepare for our future, we remain committed to our mission. Just like our neighboring farmers, we, too are stewards of our resources as we enhance the quality of life for our patients, caregivers and our community. From the Board President . . . We are excited to be celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Hinkle Hospice House and the relocation to our new campus. Without the community’s continuous generous support, we could not sustain the agency’s mission. We are in our big fundraising season and are counting on you to make plans to attend our 19th Annual Benefit Gala, Fire & Ice, on June 21st at 7:30 p.m. at Richard Childress Racing in Welcome as well as the 7th Annual Ride for Angels on July 19th at Denton Farm Park. This year’s ride begins at 10:45 a.m. When I enter the Hinkle Hospice House I am reminded just how blessed we are to have a quiet, serene place in which our loved ones and friends can transition peacefully. What an absolute blessing to rest in the knowledge that our loved ones can rest and be pain free as Rochelle C. Bobo Board President 2014 they are taken safely home in dignity. Finally, we are looking forward to extending our reach into the community via faith-based partnerships so that we might not only garner financial and human support to sustain our mission; but, also to empower those who are marginalized and have little or no voice and those who may not understand our mission. 2 New Executive Committee Welcomes New Board Members At the 30th Annual Meeting, held in April, the Hospice of Davidson County Board of Directors elected new officers to provide oversight to the agency. It is always an exciting event which allows us to show our appreciation for our wonderful volunteers, as well as spend some extra time with them. This year’s theme was based on the legacy of Marion Robert Morrison, more commonly known as John Wayne. He was a lung cancer survivor and a passionate advocate for early checkups, doing numerous announcements for the American Cancer Society. He was sadly diagnosed with stomach cancer 14 years later and lost his battle with cancer. In 1985 the JW Cancer Foundation was created in his honor, after his family promised to use his name to continue his fight against cancer. Almost 35 years after his death, his legacy is still very much alive and creating life changing moments for others, just like our volunteers. John Wayne was full of courage, dignity, and integrity, just like our volunteers. He was a legacy, which is exactly what our volunteers are to our organization and to the patients and families that we serve. This luncheon marked a great opportunity to remind our volunteers how special and unique they are and to thank them for choosing us to share their time and talents with Hospice of Davidson County. Andy Barrett, Food Service Manager from the Hinkle Hospice House Café, prepared a delicious southern meal for all 75 volunteers and guests in attendance. We were also fortunate to enjoy a rendition of the Beverly Hillbillies by our very own Louise Burton. Staff and volunteers followed their 6 Volunteers Jody Smith and Carrie Fulbright meal with a trip inside our Wild West Photo Booth, complete with props and a “wanted” poster. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with fun, fellowship and friends. I hope that each of our volunteers felt the gratitude and appreciation expressed by our staff, not only on their special day, but every day here at Hospice of Davidson County. I could not ask for a better volunteer family and am personally very thankful that they choose to share their time and talents with our organization, our patients and families. Welcome New Volunteers! So far this year we’ve added 10 new volunteers to our volunteer family. Please join me in welcoming the following new volunteers to Hospice of Davidson County: Celenia Bennett, Leda Everhart, Ellen Johnson, Roger Kelly, Heather Kindley, Janet Lance, Danny Leonard, Donna Little, Lorree Miller and Emily Wilson. Props used at this year’s “Wild West Photo Booth” at the Volunteer Luncheon. Volunteer Louise Burton delivered her rendition of the Beverly Hillbillies at the Volunteer Luncheon on April 9. Volunteers enjoying this year’s annual appreciation luncheon on April 9. 7 Hospice and the Faith Community Connection: Hospice Mission and Ministry Ministering to Community Needs of Grief and Loss Co-authored by Helen Fitzgerald, CSW, Community Education Coordinator and Rev. Misty Polston-York, Spiritual Counselor/ Chaplain Historically, in our American society, as in many other cultures, family care for the sick and elderly was provided in the home. Extended family, neighbors, and the local church communities supported one another in meeting the needs of the family; and it was not at all uncommon for patients to die in their homes. Then with the industrial age, family sizes shrinking, and children moving away as adults, the medical model moved to people going to the hospital when sick, and often, remaining there for months, until death occurred. Physical care became increasingly specialized and isolated from the emotional and spiritual aspects of care. With the Hospice movement in London, England, Dr. Cicely Saunders founded a movement to bring the feeling of community back to medical care. This effort worked to incorporate the spiritual and psychosocial support to address the patient as a whole person, not just a diagnosis and set of symptoms. “Death… is not the ultimate tragedy. The ultimate tragedy is depersonalization… dying in an arena, separated from the spiritual nourishment that comes from being able to reach out to a loving hand.” – Norman Cousins That is what Hospice care is all about. Hospice is not less care… it is a different kind of care; one that recognizes the significance of the emotional, social, and spiritual needs and strengths that bind individuals together and impact one’s physical well- being, as well as coping and grieving. This psychosocial and spiritual model is what makes hospice care unique and specialized, and draws not only on the hospice team, but also on all those who have personal connections and relationships with the patient and family. In his book, The Hospice Movement, Sandol Stoddard explains that “hospice means both host and guest, an interaction between human beings.” It is all about the relationships. With this concept of care as our mission, who better to partner with hospices than our faith community? The end of life journey is a sacred journey, no matter one’s denomination, faith beliefs or church affiliation. It is a spiritual walk. Faith 8 communities are often the first line of hope and the most consistent support system for families. They may realize a church member’s decline and need for hospice care, before even the physician, and they are often the most trusted support system to help guide patients and families to the services they need. Hospice of Davidson County is excited and honored to be partnering with a number of local churches and faith communities. We do this to share the hospice message with the congregation, offer counseling and support for grief and loss, and provide education about topics such as advance care planning and caregiving needs. This enables us to partner with local congregations and explore together different ways that we may be in ministry within our communities. Hospice of Davidson County continues to see this model manifested at Shiloh United Methodist Church in the Reeds community. Pastor Dave Kelly and his congregation invite others in that community to attend monthly information sessions on grief/loss, caregiver stress, advanced healthcare decision making, Dementia/Alzheimer’s and end of life issues related to nutrition and communication. These sessions have addressed concerns in the congregation, while also allowing them to be in mission and ministry in the Reeds area to others who may have these same needs and concerns. This is what Hospice in mission and ministry is all about—reaching outside the doors of the church to address issues of those who may have medical needs, grief and loss concerns, or need help in accessing community resources to help them through their end of life journey. Hospice of Davidson County Chaplains/Spiritual Counselors, Rev. Misty Polston-York and Rev. David Kolb, as well as Helen Fitzgerald, CSW, Community Education Coordinator, are available to assist churches in awareness of hospice services, “Just as Moses led the Jewish people to the Promised Land, Hospice workers also help to lead those from the land of death to a new promised land of eternal life.” volunteer opportunities for missions and support through grief and loss. Other topics include healthcare decision planning and psychosocial and spiritual needs to support churches in ministering to the needs of their congregations and neighboring communities. In recent months, Hospice of Davidson County has participated in health fairs at Oak Forest United Methodist Church in Midway and New Jerusalem United Church of Christ in Silver Valley. Presentations have been given to the Bernice Cross Missions Group at First Baptist Church in Lexington, at Stoner’s Grove Baptist and Beulah United Church of Christ. At Beulah, Rev. Polston-York is teaching women how to provide compassionate support to those who are managing and coping with grief and loss, and ways to take care of themselves while helping others. Fitzgerald is also attending educational sessions to learn more about the WFBH-FaithHealth and how Hospice of Davidson County can collaborate and work with this faith health initiative to better serve the people in our county. Volunteer opportunities at Hospice of Davidson County are another way churches and church groups can minister to others. At the upcoming United Church of Christ Women’s Summer Conference, Rev. Polston-York will speak on the theme of “Treasure in Clay Vessels,” relating how volunteer opportunities and Chaplaincy are both a form of missionary ministry. Rev. Polston-York will share this theme again at the United Methodist Church Women’s Day at Center United Methodist in Welcome on July 22nd as she speaks on the ministry of the female Hospice Chaplain as well as ministry and volunteer opportunities at Hospice of Davidson County. Hospice of Davidson County is blessed by many churches throughout the county who regularly provide snacks and/or meals at the Hinkle Hospice House, make prayer shawls or prayer quilts for our patients and those who come to sing and visit patients. We are particularly grateful for those who provide financial support throughout the year and for those who minister to our patients, families and staff in creative and thoughtful ways. If you, or your church, are interested in finding out more about Hospice care and services, and opportunities for mission and ministry with Hospice, please call (336) 475-5444 to speak with Helen Fitzgerald about creative partnerships and opportunities to work together. 9 Hinkle Hospice House Food Services Undergoes a Makeover By Alison Hicks, RN, BSN, CHPN, Director of the Hinkle Hospice House In February 2014, Hospice of Davidson County made a change that continues to benefit our patients, families, visitors and staff every day. The Hinkle Hospice House Food Services underwent a makeover. What had been contracted food services for over two years is now a professional culinary experience overseen by Chef/Food Service Manager, Andy Barrett. Andy brings over 40 years of experience to our agency. He has been the executive chef for restaurants, country clubs and hotels and owned his own catering business for 20 years when he lived in Nashville, Tennessee. Andy describes his experience in working for Hospice of Davidson County to be very rewarding, “To be able to provide good food and good service for patients and families, and the opportunity to give a break from the tough times.” Andy also supervises two part-time cooks, Angie Hughes and Bonita Williams. Both of these ladies also bring great experience to our agency. The Hinkle Hospice House Café offers meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for both patients and family members, at no additional charge. Donations are accepted, at a suggested rate of $3 for breakfast and $4 for lunch or dinner, and can be placed in the donation box located in the Café. The Founder’s Circle By Renee Shipko, M.Ed., Director of Marketing & Development This spring marked the fifth anniversary of The Henry Etta & Bruce Hinkle Hospice House at Hospice of Davidson County. This milestone is a significant one in that the agency has cared for more than 1,000 patients in the last five years at the county’s only inpatient hospice facility-patients who otherwise may not have experienced hospice services. To recognize the significance of this anniversary and the importance of the founders of the agency as a whole, Hospice of Davidson County introduced a new annual giving society to recognize individuals who make annual contributions of $1,000 or more to Hospice of Davidson County. The agency is appreciative of these and all the donors who partner with our agency to provide end of life services to patients and families across Davidson County. If you’ve thought about making a gift of $1,000 or more to our agency and have been waiting for the right time – it is now!
