The History of Nine Lessons & Carols The service began as a Christmas service at the Cathedral in Truro, England. First celebrated in 1880, the service was drawn up by E. W. Benson, later the Archbishop of Canterbury. The celebration made its way to Cambridge University in 1918, where the choir of King's College has sung it every Christmas Eve since. Since 1928, the British Broadcasting Service has allowed people all over the world to take part in this holiday tradition. In recent decades, this Christmas celebration has been adapted as an Advent service by the Catholic Church. As a period of preparation for the great solemnity of Christmas, Advent has long been similar to Lent as a time of fasting, penance and quiet anticipation. This anticipation is heightened by the format of the Lessons and Carols, in which the history of salvation acts as a prelude to the coming of the Messiah.
