Four Student Ambassadors, Brian Matthews, Paola Ilescas, Charise Moore, and Connor Zablow, along with the President of the College, Dr. Francisco Rodriguez, MCC retiree Kathy Perkins, Cynthia Rice, and faculty member Jane DeRoche made more than 500 phone calls to the community regarding the proposition. “I remain cautiously optimistic that the count of these last ballots could push Proposition EE past the 55 percent needed for passage,” stated Dr. Rodriguez. The goal of Proposition EE is to improve academic facility and technology projects that help students, active duty military, and war veterans to transfer to four-year universities or to be granted training for higherpaying jobs. These improvements will permit MCC to continue providing a means for affordable and high-quality education. Because MCC’s enrollment has increased more than 40 percent, students, active military, and war veterans are unable to enroll in fundamentally required classes such as math and science. If this proposition passes, class offerings will increase and shorten the time required by students to complete their programs. Additionally, because MCC supplies vital job training for preparation for the workforce, this proposition will allow MCC to continue offering residents of the community training and education in areas such as health sciences, occupational therapy, and other job training and workforce programs. “Win or lose, I want to congratulate the staff, faculty, students, and community volunteers whose hard work and dedication to this endeavor succeeded in creating awareness of the needs of our students and of the many ways MiraCosta College serves this region. Thank you all for your efforts and commitment,” Dr Rodriguez also stated. As of press time, the proposition held 54.1 percent of the vote. Fiftyfive percent is needed to pass. ASG pays tribute to veterans Aamirah Syed Layout Editor Last Thursday, an MIA table was set up in the cafeteria on the Oceanside campus to honor U.S. military who are missing in action. The table and the various objects on it each held a symbolical significance. A white table cloth represented the purity of the Armed Forces member’s intentions to respond to their country’s call to arms. A red rose represented the blood sacrificed to ensure America’s freedom, and also served as a reminder of the friends and family who faithfully wait for their return. A yellow ribbon represented those worn on the lapels of those who demand a proper accounting of fallen members of the military. A lemon slice represented the bitterness of their fate. Salt sprinkled on the plate represented the tears of their families. An inverted glass represented the fact that they are not present to toast. A candle represented a light of hope that these members of the Armed Forces will find their ways safely home. Veterans Day originated in 1919 as Armistice Day, proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson. On that day he said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day, will be filled with the solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory. The victory Wilson was referring to was World War I. However, the original concept for celebration was for a day of parading, public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning. Later in that same year, President Eisenhower announced the first “Veterans Day Proclamation,” stating, “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.” Veterans Day not only upholds the historical importance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of the day, a celebration to pay tribute to America’s veterans for their patriotism, love, and willingness to serve and sacrifice. Alexandra Korbin Staff Writer • The Emerging Leaders InstitutConference (ELI) hosted by the MiraCosta College Student Services will take place on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, on the Oceanside campus. This conference is a free, non-credit certificate program open to all MCC students, geared to providing students with the tools they need to excel in leadership positions. The deadline to apply is Nov. 21. “I went to ELI in the spring of 2011. I thought it was a really great experience because it introduced me different leadership styles, and inspired me to run for Inter-Club Council Chair,” Nicci Ainuu, ASG Recording Secretary and former InterClub Council Chair. According to Jim Gonzales, Director of Student Activities, the Emerging Leaders Institute will present nine workshops designed to give students the information they need to gain confidence and excel in the classroom, workplace, and community. These workshops Communication Skills & Conflict Resolution • Leadership Styles, Diverse Communities Ethical Decision-Making • Teamwork and Collaboration • Time Management • Vision and Goal Setting • Creating Networks • Public Speaking. “Professionals pay thousands of dollars to receive these skills. MiraCosta College students can receive this training for free. Take advantage of this opportunity to elevate your leadership skills,' stated Gonzales. Additionally, students will be encouraged to participate in a service learning project to implement the skills acquired during the conference. “No matter what you think you know coming into this conference, it gets turned around. The presenters let you into their world and how they became leaders, and they’re all from different colleges. They come from all over, and you wonder ‘Why are you here?’ and they’re honestly there to help you. They want to support you in everything you do. This kind of conference would typically cost almost $6,000 to $7,000, but we get it for free. You learn skills that you can use in everyday life, and everyone that participates is so passionate about what they want to do. You find out different things about yourself and others. In a life full of lessons to be learned, you can never learn enough, and this conference is definitely a learning experience,” said Coco Brown, student and Inter-Club Council Chair. Attendees must attend the two full days of workshops to be eligible for a certificate, which will be presented at a ceremony during the spring semester. Sessions will run from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both days. Refreshments and lunch will be provided at not cost. Students may pick up an application at the Student Activities Office, in room 3445 on the Oceanside campus and in the Student Center on the San Elijo campus. Or they may log onto www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/ emergingleaders/application.html to complete an application. Someone you know is in love. The class will provide practical and theoretical teaching on age-related physical and cognitive changes. Additionally, it will explore cultural diversity and its effect on caregiving, health consequences of caregiving, and available community resources. This course is specifically targeted for students interested in working in the field of aging or those who are caregivers for family members. This 3-unit course counts toward the associate degree in gerontology, and also satisfies the Plan A, G.E. Area F (Cultural Diversity). It is acceptable for elective credit at CSU, and there is no prerequisite. This is an online late-start course and begins January 28. H.O.P.E. That is the question To sex or not to sex That is the question Photo by Stephanie Phillips Stephanie Phillips Copy Editor A h, the age old question of premarital sex and whether or not people should be having it. I was raised with a red light on the subject which led me to believe in a future haven where sex when you are married is like having the best beer you’ve ever tasted on tap at your house. Only, the tap has a personality with ideas and opinions. I was ill-prepared for the world of dating due to the bubble of courtship that I had safely nestled myself into. These are some things that helped me figure out when or whether to take my relationship to the next level. To better equip the world of conservatives teetering on the idea of a test run in the partner department and further enlighten the free-for all spreadersof-love liberals, let us embark on this somewhat, scientifically valid and morally compromised journey with bible in one hand and bourbon in the other. It is physics, my dear Watson, physics. The third law of thermodynamics clearly states that the change in entropy of a system moving from one state to another will approach zero as it is temperature approaches zero on the Kelvin scale. The fun thing about entropy is that no real system can ever be cooled all the way down to 0 K, so once you’re in it, you’re not going anywhere. The same holds true for starting up a sexual relationship. Thanks to chemicals like oxytocin, which are released during intercourse .It doesn’t even have to be good intercourse but if it is, oxytocin will flood numerous neural receptors during orgasm. This feel-good hormone creates chemical bonds between sexual partners similar to the bond experienced by mothers when oxytocin is released during breastfeeding. I find something mildly disturbing about the neurological connection between nursing babes and sexual encounters. The fact that breastfeeding a grown man during intercourse is a chemical bond strengthener, horrifies me. What else this psychologically damaging vision of chemical bonding is telling us is something profoundly beautiful. There is a direct neurological link to sex and family, a sacred, universal connection that binds people together beyond their choosing to be apart. It’s the entropy that breaks our hearts. Thermodynamics wins again. For you right-brainers, every time two people get it on, fireworks in the brain spell out the words: love, safety, connection and comfort. These feelings don’t go away. You can keep throwing more bonds in the box but you can’t extinguish the ones you’ve made. Do you really want to share the chemical equivalent of breastfeeding with Joe Shmoe at the bar or Loosey Lucy at the club last night? Hopefully most adults are somewhat educated on the risks of obtaining social diseases. If not, read “Candide.” Syphilis is getting pretty popular again. The asymptomatic nature of STDs is enough to get me off the roster for team get busy. The majority of STDs produce no symptoms or signs, or produce symptoms so mild that they’re unnoticed. Consequently, many of the infected have no idea that they need medical care. Gender disparities, like women suffering more frequent and more serious STD complications than men do are still peculiar to me, even after research. Among the most serious STD complications are pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus), infertility, and chronic pelvic pain. Age is more than a number. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( C D C ) , compared to older adults, sexually a c t i v e adolescents ages 15 to 19 and young adults ages 20 to 24 are at higher risk for getting STDs. Time between infection and complications are often a long interval. Sometimes years occurs between acquiring an STD and recognizing a clinically significant health problem. The CDC’s Reportable STD’s in Young People 15-24 by State and County, 2010, put San Diego County in the red (that’s bad) for P&S syphilis and chlamydia was a close second. Now that we’re all tightening those chastity belts, how about addressing the moral aspects of whether or not to have and to hold before you hold-naked. Where is the beauty in premarital sex? Is it going to give a woman security that a little back-fat hanging over the top of her strapless wedding gown isn’t going to scare away the man of her dreams? Is premarital sex going to give a lessendowed man the confidence to take a step toward commitment? After knowing some of the physical/ chemical reactions that are happening in the body during intercourse, it seems potentially damaging to our emotional well-being to have sex without commitment. Our bodies seem to be wired for such a thing, yet the thrill of an endorphin rush from such a favorite form of cardio is altogether overwhelming when willing prospects are right in front of you with no strings attached. Battling the desire for instant gratification is a constant but no matter where an individual’s moral hierarchy stands, I think everyone will agree that it hurts to be hurt, whether self-inflicted by our own choices or not. To engage in intercourse is to let another person become as physically close to you as possible, outside of being in utero. Sexual safety comes with honesty and trust. Upholding truth is an issue of morality. The fact is that our bodies create bonds. Despite the mental wars we can wage on our minds, we all have to be willing to take responsibility for the forces we choose to move within ourselves and each other. “There is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.” -Mark 7:15 I’m pretty sure that he wasn’t talking about venereal disease. The sexual decisions that I make with the one whom I desire will produce from me, the fruits of love. It doesn’t make us less of a person if we have premarital sex. It doesn’t ruin us or defile us. What ruins us is harsh judgment, irresponsibility, selfishness and a lack of love. Everybody has that sometimes lonely piece of imperfection beating in his or her chest that is not so different from the guy’s sitting next to you in class. Spread your patience, kindness and long-suffering as much as you’re willing and do it safely. What do you think? Do You Think People Should Wait Until Marriage To Have Sex? “I feel the core of the human soul is based on experience. If they feel comfortable with each other and they’re in love, they should do it.” Conor “I don’t really feel comfortable discussing this topic.” Frank “I think you should wait but it’s not easy.” Rebecca “One word: herpes.” Samantha “It just seems all the more special when two people can have something together, just the two of them.” Mary "Although I have never done it [waited until marriage], I do believe it would be a wonderful way to begin a life together." Bob 4|ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT November 12, 2012 MiraCosta College Blue Gate Gallery Show features “Explorations” by Ann Olson The Blue Gate Gallery will present works by Ann Olson from Nov. 13 to Nov. 23. There will be a closing reception on Nov. 20, at 1:15 p.m. Olson is a re-entry student who has been studying art for three years at MCC. She has taken 44 units worth of courses in everything from the history of art to drawing and painting. "I'm trying to build up my portfolio. I really enjoy the classes here and the amount of the focus the teachers put toward their students. The instruction is great. I'm very lucky to have the opportunity to go go here, " said Olson. The artist has a B.A. in Education, and is currently applying to graduate school at UCSD and the Art Institute of Boston. "What I like best about art is that it's a great way of self expression, and self expression is a survival of humanity," Olson says." This show represents two avenues of exploration in my artistic process since 2011. The first explores portraiture using charcoal and paint. The second represents my investigation of a variety of printmaking techniques. The drawings feature the use of symbols and repetitive imagery to describe the event or the personality of the subject. The prints are traditional line drawings that allowed me to explore this process driven medium and discover its expressive possibilities. S Catch the original before you see the remake Alexandra Korbin Staff Writer Helena Bonham-Carter and Ralph Fiennes of the Harry Potter franchise will star in the newest version of Great Expectations this month. But film critic Leonard Martin calls an earlier version of the classic story “one of the greatest films of all time.” To fully appreciate this upcoming film, you owe it to yourself to first see David Lean’s epic film Great Expectations, the story of a young orphan named Pip whose life is forever changed when a secret benefactor reveals that he is destined to grow up to be a gentleman of “great expectations.” As a young boy, Pip meets grotesque characters who mold his simple life into that of a London gentleman. But even as Pip carries out the extravagant lifestyle Oddball--A new sound with a classic feel V e Robert Shepherd Staff Writer Oddball is a San Diego based rock band that fuses punk, metal and ‘80s glam-rock into one dynamite package. Oddball is: Rob Shepherd, lead vocals and guitar, Kevin Kane, bass Zach Granlic, drums and the newest member Wess Hawkins, on lead guitar. Oddballs’ songs with r titles like: T.J. Hooker and Tequila Mockingbird allow the listener to quickly come to the realization that these very accomplished musicians don’t make the mistake of taking themselves too seriously, making their live show thoroughly enjoyable. The song “So Sorry” has been made into a full length music video, taped and directed by: Chance Kassel, and can be viewed from their Facebook page. Be sure to “like” the page to keep updated on upcoming events. he always dreamed of, his memories are plagued by an escaped convict that he dreads, the demented heiress Miss Havisham, and the cruel Estella who Pip has fallen hopelessly in love with. David Lean’s 1946 adaption (whose films include Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia) of Charles Dickens’ cherished novel is filled with memorable performances from the actors, who bring Dickens’famously animated characters to life. The film follows Dickens’ novel seamlessly, giving the mysterious and thrilling story an expert performance, and earned praise from film critics. See if you can notice a very young Sir Alec Guinness (famous for his role as ObiWan Kenobi Star Wars) performing as Pip’s best friend. There’s still plenty of time to order the classic version from Netflix (also available on the Instant Queue) before the newest film hits theaters. W E I If you’re looking for a local act with a “big time” feel, Oddball fits the bill, with a new sound and look yet holding on to classic tone. Their songs are entertaining, memorable and well structured. While opening for international touring and recording acts such as D.R.I. and Missing Persons this group has held their own. I see a lot of acts and I can say with all confidence, this band has what it takes to make it. Tim Pyles has been playing a couple of selections off the newest C.D. “Cold Beer, Dirty Girls” on 94/9 over the last couple of months and has been working with the band to put some dates together. The boys will be playing in L.A. and surrounding areas for the next few weeks but will return to San Diego in December. For a complete schedule check out Oddball San Diego on Facebook. I highly recommend catching a show when you have the opportunity. Disney does not disappoint Roberto Suarez Photographer Now that Halloween is over, a new month begins, most evidently in the theatres as we start to lean more towards family movies as the holidays begin. With so many new movies to choose from, you must ask yourself which one do I watch? Many of us as college students will want to escape our stressful lives and return to a time when things when simplicity flowed through our lives. Why not turn and watch a children’s CGI film? Did I mention the film is produced by Disney? This month, Disney released the ever so hyped movie Wreck it Ralph. After many months of anticipation and anxious fans waiting for this film, I dare say that it does not disappoint. The film revolves around video game characters and their lives after the arcades close, and reveals what happens in the heart of Game Central Station, closely resembling an idea very similar to the Toy Story franchise. The movie’s main character is Ralph, who ironically is a good guy stuck with the job of playing the video game’s villain as a building wrecker. This causes his neighbors in the video game world to think he indeed is a real bad guy. In order to seek a little “Wreckognition,” Ralph decides to video game jump into other games, which is against the law in the video game world. Along the way he meets many colorful characters, including his right hand wing girl, Vanellope Von Schweetz. The characters are very well scripted and while some of the character types seem to be recycled (such as Ralph being the ostracized outcast, Vanellope being the hyperactive ambitious young child, Sergeant Tamora being the overly uptight military commander, and Fix-it Felix being the self determined secondary hero), Disney manages to give these personalities a fresh new look, which makes the movie even more enjoyable. While I am not a big fan of overused and constant bombardment of puns, Disney makes them work, and they end up being quite charming and funny. This movie is perfect to watch with your family, friends, or even younger siblings. It is well rounded and has something for everyone. If you are a gamer or a fan of video games, then I would highly recommend this film to you, as the nostalgia will greatly sink in. Disney, take my tokens. I demand a sequel. |5 What MiraCostans are doing for others November 12, 2012 MiraCosta College FEATURE Photos by Priscilla Barden Sumislaski Would you like to help the countless victims of hurricane Sandy who have lost everything? Growing up I didn’t have a lot, so it’s nice to be able to feel that you know what they’re going through too.” Coco Brown, student “I love the Holiday Angels. The celebration is about the students’ children who are getting it. A lot of the children come from low income families and this might be the only gift they get. And I love Christmas time. The Osher Scholarship awards financial support to reentry students, or students that have experienced an interruption in their education of five or more years and who now want to resume their undergraduate university studies to complete their degree. For Stanley, this means continuing his education as a History major and gaining the preparation he needs for transfer during the duration of his stay here at MiraCosta College. One can imagine the impact of receiving financial aid in the form of a scholarship and its ability to change the outcome in pursuit of an education. Stanley shares “the books, the time, it’s and immense investment… especially for a working independent such as myself… for five classes one can spend around $500 [for books] a semester, without the Osher, that would come out of gas and food money.” Support from the Bernard Osher Foundation will help him fulfill his goals to finish a four-year degree, complete a Masters program, and immediately begin teaching in his field while simultaneously completing a Doctoral program. Stanley is pursuing his degree in History because he is “looking to inspire interest and critical thought regarding people and events of the past… we all undergo very similar experiences at different points in history. I want to understand those experiences and help others to understand them.” Come catch a falling star Fall star gazing parties are planned for Dec. 7 & 8, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting. One resolution was approved to promote the distribution of condoms, lubrication, and pregnancy testing at the health service centers on campus. It also urged health service centers on campus to provide free (or low cost) pregnancy testing. Another resolution was passed to encourage the Student Senate for California Community Colleges to write a letter to all California Legislators and Governor Jerry Brown denouncing the cuts to our child care centers and urging them to fully fun our child care centers in all California Community Colleges. Another resolution was passed to have the Student Senate for California Community Colleges collaborate with the California Legislature to restore Full Time Equivalent Students.
