It’s a great event, not because it’s an acknowledgement of the many successes the Chamber had this past year, as in every year, but because it’s an opportunity to recognize people who have a deep passion for their craft and this community. Even when the economy is stronger, small businesses have to take serious stock of how they operate and what they can do to thrive. This year’s Small Business of the Year winners are notable because of their high level of commitment to serving their customers. Data Graphics is best known as a custom printing operation, but in recent years has expanded its base of products to include a wide array of promotional items that help its customers promote their own businesses. The winner in the 10+ employee category, Rob O’Brian, President Boyd Metals, has grown by adding to its capacity to custom fabricate steel and other metal products to rigid specifications demanded by its expanding customer base. In the not-for-profit sector, Habitat for Humanity is well recognized for its immediate and continuing efforts to help provide good housing for people displaced by the tornado. But more recently, the organization has expanded its opportunities with ReStore, providing people a place to find low-cost items for their own homes, with the funds generated supporting Habitat’s ongoing efforts. Our Industries of the Year are great representatives of the fact that, large or small, our companies have a great impact. Our large Industry of the Year, Able Manufacturing & Assembly, has been a recognized name in Joplin for 60 years. Beginning with a single product line, making Bunny Brad trucks, the company today is engaged in a number of parts and complete installations across a variety of sectors. Thirty years ago, the company was purchased by the Hillenbrand family, who led the company to diversify. With the economic downturn in 2009, many of the company’s major customers lost business, in turn causing a significant negative impact on this local firm. However, the family continued to support the firm and, with a new direction and local support, the company has grown its workforce by 20 percent in the last year and continues to find new opportunities. Our Small Industry of the Year, Component Packaging, began 18 years ago. It was also a family-owned business and one of the first companies to locate in the newly opened Crossroads Park. About 10 years ago, the original owners were bought out by Lori and Mike Magoulis, who began taking the firm in new directions. The company has expanded its customer base to more than 30 customers across the U.S. As the company has grown, it has faced significant cost challenges from Chinese competitors, but has met the challenge by becoming the top-quality, customer-focused firm in its arena. Today the company’s 30 employees push an average of two million packages a week out to its customers. And then there are the Golden Apple winners: K-2nd grade – Michelle Young, Jefferson Elementary School; 3rd-5th grade – Lisa Satterfield, College Heights Christian School; 6th-8th grade – Julie Pettyjohn, St. Peter’s Middle School and 9th-12th grade – John Atteberry, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School. All of these teachers personify the commitment to quality education and dedication to student success in all of our area schools, public and private. Kudos, too, to Cleo Copeland, the winner of this year’s Arty Award. While business and education play major roles in the success of a community, the arts add to a community’s soul. Cleo’s enthusiasm for all things art energizes anyone who works with her. The Chamber’s Young Professional of the Year is Shawn Daniel of Commerce Bank. Shawn’s dedication to the YPN’s community service projects made him an easy choice for his peers. And the YPN’s Rookie of the Year award went to Stephanie Onstot of The Alliance of Southwest Missouri. Finally, a warm congratulations to Peggy Fuller, the Chamber’s Outstanding Citizen. Peggy has a strong commitment to enhancing both the arts and education in our area. She was a founding member and is currently Chairman of the Joplin Schools Bright Futures program. She was an original Teaching Reading to Every Kid coach when the Chamber began that program a decade ago. She has also been a strong supporter of Spiva and Pro Musica. These companies and individuals remind us that great, positive things happen every day. The companies and organizations are committed to their employees and the community. The individuals give of their time, talent and treasure to lend a helping hand, to raise others up and to make this a better place. And all of them are an inspiration for all of us to reach for a higher level. 3 May 2015 Business Outlook CONGRATU to the 98th Annual Banquet Winners, An SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 1-10 Employees DataGraphics Printing 11-50 Employees Boyd Metals of Joplin OUTSTANDING CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Not-for-Profit Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity INDUSTRY OF THE YEAR Large Industry of the Year Able Manufacturing & Assembly, LLC Peggy Fuller Southwest Missouri Bank 4 Small Industry of the Year Component Packaging See all the pictures at stormstanley.com/joplin-area-chamber-of-commerce-98th-annual-banquet/ May 2015 Business Outlook ULATIONS nnounced at the Annual Banquet April 23 ARTY AWARD YOUNG PROFESSIONALS AWARDS Cleo Copeland Cleo’s Picture Framing & Design Stephanie Onstot, Rookie of the Year Shawn Daniel, YP of the Year & YPN Service Award GOLDEN APPLE AWARDS K-2nd Grade Michelle Young Jefferson Elementary School 3rd-5th Grade Lisa Satterfield College Heights Christian School 6th-8th Grade Julie Pettyjohn St. Peter’s Middle School 9th-12th Grade John Atteberry Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School The 98th Annual Banquet was made possible by the following sponsors: Presenting Sponsor: Innovative Objects Picture Sponsor: Storm Stanley Gold Sponsor: Venue Sponsor: Highlight Video Sponsor: Downstream Casino Resort Missouri Southern State University KOAM-TV Emcees/Entertainment: Siblings Improv Best Use of Banquet Theme Centerpiece Winner: Arvest Best Use of Company Theme Centerpiece Winner: Vatterott 5 May 2015 6 Business Outlook 2015-2016 Executive Committee Presented by Message to the Network from Chairman Nicole Brown April marked the changing of the guard in Young Professionals Network (YPN) leadership. I am grateful for the opportunity to step into the chair role with Brent Baker as co-chair. Lindsey Hayes did an excellent job of leading the organization in 2014-2015, and I would like to extend a personal thank you for her service. The executive team, made up of returning members Shawn Daniel, Jake Heisten, Ryan Melton, Greg Sutton, Megan Tyler, Christina Williams and Lindsey Hayes, along with new executive team members Jennifer Little and Stephanie Onstot, convened for the annual planning retreat in mid-April. The membership provided feedback for the retreat at the quarterly meeting in March. Members weighed in on initiatives they would like to add, change, continue and discontinue in the coming year. Many people in the community are surprised to learn YPN is only seven years old. Growing to 185 members in 2015, we have completed 2,020 hours of volunteer activities in the community. These hours only include those completed at YPN events and barely scratch the surface of the impact young professionals have in the community. Recently, a challenge was issued for four percent of the YPN membership to serve on the THE BRAVE ONES Leadercast 2015 Friday, May 8 College Heights Christian Church Speaker Lineup: Andy Stanley, Leadership Author and Communicator Peyton Manning, Super Bowl-Winning Quarterback & 5-Time NFL MVP Malala Yousafzai, “Bravest Girl in the World” - CNN Ed Catmull, President, Pixar/Disney Animation Studios Seth Godin, Innovative Thinker & Best-Selling Author Rudy Giuliani, 107th Mayor of New York City Aja Brown, Mayor, City of Compton, California CMDR Rourke Denver, Navy SEAL Commander & Author Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP AG Bill & Giuliana Rancic, Award-Winning Personalities & Co-Hosts of Leadercast Group discount price of $55/person for Chamber members! Reserve your spot at www.joplincc.com. May 2015 Business Outlook Nicole Brown, Chairman Brent Baker, Co-Chairman Lindsey Hayes, Past Chairman Shawn Daniel Jake Heisten Jennifer Little Ryan Melton Stephanie Onstot Greg Sutton Megan Tyler Christina Williams YPN New Members Travis Duff, DataGraphics Printing board of directors for organizations in our area. However, we quickly realized this goal was already surpassed before its start. This conversation did help us realize we could do a better job of recognizing and celebrating our young professionals’ service to the community. We are compiling a list of YPN members currently serving on boards. We will also explore opportunities to prepare young professionals for board service and connecting them with board openings. My challenge to JACC members is to look for young professionals in the community you can mentor, engage and empower. The membership is made up of talented and energetic individuals, many of whom are looking for an opportunity to impact the community but have not yet been asked to take a seat at the table. Ask for their input, opinion and time; they will impress you with their perspective and level of commitment. Congratulations to 2015 Super Leaders The Super Leader program is a joint effort between Missouri Southern State University and the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network to identify, cultivate and motivate future community leaders currently enrolled in college. Worker misclassification is when a business misclassifies an employee as an independent contractor to avoid paying certain taxes. Misclassified workers may not be able to receive health insurance or pension plans and could be denied unemployment benefits, workers’ compensation insurance and other benefits. Worker misclassification also generates substantial losses to the Treasury and Social Security Medicaid Funds, as well as the state unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation funds. The reduction in funds increases the employers’ financial liability. Some forms of misclassification occur when workers are not reported to the state or federal government but, rather, are working “off the books” or being paid “under the table” in cash. If a business intentionally or accidentally misclassifies their workers, they are still in violation of the law. In determining the existence of the independent contractor relationship, the Division of Employment Security reviews if the employer retains the right to control how the results are accomplished or only has input on the results desired. It is not necessary that the business actually direct or control the manner in which their services are performed, so long as the business retains the right do to so. To find out if you are properly classifying your workers, take the department’s Worker Misclassification Assessment by visiting Labor's Off the Books page. (Source: Department of Labor & Industrial Relations) Leadership Joplin Class Project The Alliance of Southwest Missouri and the Boys and Girls Club have teamed up with Leadership Joplin’s Class of 2015 to host a FREE community block party May 19, and you’re invited! Why Should Your Business Consider Exporting? • Access. Today, improvements in trade finance, the Internet and trade agreements have dramatically increased access to markets worldwide. • Demand. More than 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power is located outside the United States. Your competitors are increasing their global market share, and you can, too. • Profitability. Exporting can be profitable for businesses of all sizes. On average, sales grow faster, more jobs are created and employees earn more than in non-exporting firms. • Competitive Advantage. The United States is known throughout the world for high-quality, innovative goods and services, customer service and sound business practices. • Risk Mitigation. Most companies that export have an easier time riding out fluctuations in the U.S. economy and are more likely to stay in business. Source: www.export.gov Where Do International Trade Opportunities Lie? To succeed in exporting, you must first identify the most profitable international markets for your products or services. Here are a few tips: 18 • Thorough market research is key to success. Understanding your export markets will give you vital information about how to manage your efforts. • Do not choose too many markets. For most small businesses, three foreign markets will be more than enough, initially. You may want to test one market and then move on to secondary markets as your experience level develops. • Focusing on regional, geographic clusters of countries can also be more cost effective than choosing markets scattered around the globe. Source: www.export.gov It is important to note, though, that without proper guidance and assistance, market identification activities can be time consuming and costly, particularly for a small business. With this in mind, the Joplin Area Chamber and the Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Center, located at MSSU, have resources available to assist. MAKE PLANS NOW TO ATTEND the “Where’s YOUR Export Market? Seminar that will take place Wednesday, May 6, at 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Chamber office. This hands-on interactive session is designed to provide insight and information on actions your business can take to successfully identify, research and enter new international markets. They are currently neck and neck in attaining 10 percent of their members pledged. Stay tuned—we hope to announce the winner soon! Show-Me Heroes encourages your business to take the pledge today, if you haven’t already done so. There will be social media updates for the two chambers for friendly encouragement throughout the #RaceToBronze competition.
