In Touch Summer 2005
from our new Director
Jane Pattinson
I AM DELIGHTED to have joined Watford Mencap and to
be part of an organisation that provides such a range of
quality services for people with learning disabilities and
their carers.
Meeting with staff, volunteers and people who use our
services over the past month has enabled me to see the
organisation at work and to observe the commitment
and enthusiasm of all involved.
I have spent most of my career working within the voluntary sector supporting people with learning disabilities
and their carers. I began by working for the SHAW Trust
and then Hyde Housing Association supporting people
with learning disabilities to live in their own homes.
I then moved to Harrow Mencap to manage their residential and supported living service. Three years ago I
became Deputy Chief Executive of Harrow Mencap, this
role involved the development and management of a
large community team of staff and volunteers.
I believe I have joined Watford Mencap at a very positive time. There are many exciting challenges ahead of us
including: the move to an accessible head office, increasing the involvement of people with learning disabilities
throughout the organisation and strengthening our campaigning role.
I am looking forward to building new links within the
local community and to developing partnerships that will
enable the organisation to strengthen the support it offers
to people with learning disabilities and their families.
I plan to meet more of our members and supporters over
the coming months and look forward to our AGM on 28th
September at the Sheppard Centre in Rickmansworth.

Message from the Editor
THIS YEAR’S MESSAGE for Learning Disability
Week was ‘Opening Up New Worlds of
Opportunity’. This is especially relevant for
Watford Mencap as the theme is reflected
right across the range of the services provided
by our Charity.
It’s impossible to feature everything that
happens in a single edition of In Touch, but
as you will read, there are lots of Children’s
activities taking place; Leisure Together continues to organise fun and interesting events;
the Bridge to Work Project has now set up ‘The
Lunch Bunch’ sandwich round and our Advice
& Advocacy Service is working hard to keep
you informed about information regarding
Learning Disability issues and events in this
area.
The most important recent event for
Watford Mencap has to be the appointment
of our new Director, Jane Pattinson, and we
are delighted to welcome her both to the
Charity and to her article in this edition of our
magazine.
Have a great Summer!

Bushey shop – seven years of success
TONY FINUCANE a long standing member of
the Homes Management Committee is retiring from this voluntary role, having been a
valued member of the group for well over
twenty years.Tony has had long standing links
with the local community for people with
learning disabilities, and everyone at Watford
Mencap would like to pass on an enormous
vote of thanks for his valuable contribution
and loyalty to our Charity.
THIS WONDERFUL pen & ink drawing was
done by Jane Worthington as a present for
Manager, Jean Darke in celebration of a very
‘special’ birthday (we won’t say which one!).
This seemed an appropriate time, therefore, to highlight the great success of this busy
little shop which during the last seven years,
has become almost an ‘institution’ within
Bushey village life. This success must be credited to Jean, with her two assistant managers
and loyal team of nearly 30 volunteers. Jean
puts this success down to the value and quality of the vast range of donated goods which
comes in, the loyalty of the local community –
some customers even visit twice a day – and
the constant flow of donations which get

CHILDREN’S SERVICES
Play schemes
Our summer play schemes will take place in
August. Play scheme 1 for children under
the age of eight will take place at Shepherds
School in Mill End, Rickmansworth. The two
play schemes for the older children will be
held at Watford Grammar School for Boys.
We hope that this change of venue will be
easier for people to get to without our transport to take children to the play schemes.
We are currently only able to make plans to
run a small play scheme this summer for the
children with additional health needs at the
Lemarie Centre. If, however, we are able to
secure additional funds in time, then our
plans will change.
snapped up almost as soon as they come
through the door.
The shop’s window is a great draw and
unusual items put on display are soon
snapped up. Since the creation of the new
bric-a-brac room, the sales of bric-a-brac
account for as much of the income as sales of
clothes. With so many people now selling
items at car boot sales and on ‘e.bay’, obtaining quality items is becoming more difficult,
but it does remain a tremendous attraction.
Please keep on supporting the shops – and
don’t forget to give us your goods!

Advice &
Advocacy
Service
Letters
Ruth Murray, Adviser
Epson compatibles from £3.50+VAT
Dear Mencap
Following the recent award of the
CLS Quality Mark we have been
looking at how we can improve the
Advice Service and make more
people aware of what the service can
provide.
From these discussions we are
pleased to announce the re-launch
of the service as the Advice and
Advocacy Service.The service offers
advice and information to people
with a learning disability as well as
their parents and carers in South
West Hertfordshire.
The advisers can also go to meetings
with people to help them say what
they want or can talk to people on
their behalf.The advisers are
experienced and offer a free and
confidential quality service.They can
help with benefit problems and
claims, housing and residential care
options, dealing with Social Services,
Education difficulties as well as filling
in forms. These are only a few
examples so if you think we can help,
please contact us and if we can’t we
will point you in the right direction.
People can contact the service
themselves or ask a friend or family
member to do it. Care workers and
professionals can also refer people.
All you need to do is call 01923 779339
or email [email protected]

I currently live with my parents but I would
really like a place of my own where friends
can come round to see me. I am not sure if I
want to live on my own so what can I do?
How do you buy
for someone who
has everything?
Ruth replies:
Deciding where to live and in what kind of place
can be difficult.
There are lots of different types of housing you
could think about such as a flat just for you, a
room in a house or flat, which you would share
with a few others or maybe living in someone
else’s home. Wherever you decided you wanted
to be, you would be supported to live as independently as possible. Some places have staff
available through the day and night while
others are just staffed some of the time.
Whatever you think you might like, the first
thing you need to do is talk to your social worker.
They will also help you put your name on the
local council housing register. You will then need
to think about what sort of housing you want to
live in and find out more about the ones you
might like.
There is a leaflet and video called "A home
that’s right for you" to help you find out more
and you can get these from your local Learning
Disability team on 01438 737400. If you would
like help to contact your Social Worker or don’t
have one, you can contact Mencap’s Advice &
Advocacy Service who will help you.
If you would like to send a letter to our Advice
Service, please either send it to ‘Advice’ at 23
Church Street, Rickmansworth, Herts WD2 1DE
or e-mail: [email protected]

Health
Hertfordshire County Council are asking for
people’s views on the future direction of
mental health services across Hertfordshire,
Bedfordshire and Luton. Suggestions are
being made about how services are structured, who provides them and where they are
located. This consultation includes some

THE BEGINNING OF the financial year
could not have got off to a better
start that with a wonderful donation
of £10,400 organised by Michael and
Yasan Spalding in conjunction the
business partners John Bell and
Clive Bond from ‘The Concept’ group
(see below).
Michael and daughter,Yasan, were
keen to support Watford Mencap
and Michael is determined to raise a
lot more for our Charity. The
Concept group has its official launch
in October and we were delighted to
hear that a further ‘large’ cheque will
be presented at that event.
Thanks also to John for finding us

Snowdon challenge
Rotary Clubs’ support
Climbing Mt. Snowdon had been a lifelong
ambition for David Morris, father of Kyle who
attends our Children’s Centre. When he heard we
needed further funds to support the Club he
decided, together with some friends, to finally
take up the challenge. Undeterred by the drama
of losing the sole of his boot en-route, David
reached the summit. Despite surrounding dense
mist, he managed to capture the moment on
camera as pictured here. Congratulations and a
special thanks for raising over £1,000!
We are particularly pleased to announce
that two local Rotary Clubs have chosen
us as their charity to support.

AS WE CELEBRATE this year as the Year of the
Volunteer, I would like to start by paying
tribute to all our volunteers who do such a
fantastic job supporting us with the
organisation and running of our events.
We have had our popular repeat events
such as bowling and Top Golf and our first
pool tournament, which was very successful,
with many more exciting outings to come. As
we go to print, we are looking forward to our
Latin American Dance Evening... More about
that in the next issue!
Events in their planning stages include an
outreach visit the Science Museum, art and
crafts afternoon, Pub night, disco and a quiz &
bingo evening. Further details, as they are
confirmed, by separate mailings.
We are planning to hold a stall at the
Rickmansworth School Craft Fair in the
Autumn which will be combined with a
ceramic painting workshop. There will be a
wide range of items that can be purchased, for
painting on the day. If you wish to make
something crafty to sell on our stall or help on
the day, please do contact us.

At mab we believe that delivering good client
service has to be more than just skin deep.
We know that it takes more than outward gloss
and thin veneer to deliver what our clients need.
That is why first we listen and when we understand,
we deliver. Using this layered approach we apply
the depth and range of experience needed to get
the right solution for our clients.
When it comes to choosing a law firm what you see is not always what you get.
