They understood that post-secondary education not only helps students, but benefits the entire community by promising an educated workforce and strengthening the social and economic fabric of our city. The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria has matured into a vibrant organization that is recognized and supported throughout this wonderful community. Since its first year, when the Fund gave less than $10,000 in scholarships, the Fund has awarded over $4 million to 2,500 deserving Alexandria students, including over $500,000 awarded in the past fiscal year. In addition, the Fund promotes early awareness, hosts pre-college workshops, and provides financial aid advising to thousands of Alexandria students and their families. As we celebrate our 20th Anniversary, we are proud of the Fund’s accomplishments and applaud the recent benchmarks of our success. During the past year, our two major fundraisers, the Fall Telethon and the Spring Gala, exceeded all expectations and brought double-digit increases in net revenue to support the general fund. Our named scholarship donors helped us move closer to our goal of transitioning from a college access to a college completion program by providing more renewal awards for Alexandria students. Also during the past year, the Fund was privileged to be among the first college access programs in the country to benefit from the innovative College Guide Program, sponsored by UVA and designed to provide trained advisors to help students plan for and complete the college and financial aid application process. What is the Fund’s true measure of success? We know we have been successful when we receive an announcement from a former Scholarship recipient, first in her family to attend college, notifying us that she has completed her M.A. in teaching mathematics and plans to pursue a career in education. We know we have made a difference when a former recipient, now living in California, funds a scholarship to honor the teachers who inspired him at T.C. Williams. We are proud to hear from the hardworking recipient who has completed an Associate’s degree at NOVA and is headed for the next step in his education at James Madison University. We have made a difference when a former recipient, valedictorian of her college class, joins the Scholarship Fund Board of Trustees to help future generations have the same opportunities she benefited from in achieving her dream. We invite you to join the thousands of Alexandrians who have made a commitment to the future of this city through the education of our youth. The 20th Anniversary of the Fund is a time to celebrate the successes of our past, but most important, a time to meet new challenges and build a better future for our community’s young people. Susan Yowell Director Laura Machanic Chair, Board of Trustees 2006 Annual Report Louise Blanc T.C. Williams Class of 1998 B.A., The George Washington University, 2002 Tisara Photography “The additional resources from the Scholarship Fund assisted me in pursuing my college education. I was encouraged even more since this was coming from the community. Being a beneficiary of the Scholarship Fund informed me that a bunch of anonymous individuals were investing in me.” When graduated from The George Washington University with a B.A. in Computer Science, she became the first in her family to earn a college degree. She is grateful for the four years of scholarship support she received from the Fund. Born to parents who emigrated from Haiti, Louise and her mother settled in Alexandria in 1990. While at T.C. Williams, Louise earned academic distinction with awards in English, French, Latin and Chemistry. Although she worked part time, Louise was active in Future Business Leaders of America and Junior Achievement. Having learned the importance of helping others from her mother who made frequent trips back to Haiti to assist relatives, Louise is dedicated to helping those with HIV/AIDs and volunteers in the DC AIDS Walk with Whitman/ Walker Clinic. She is employed at Technology Advancement Group and takes classes at the Department of Agriculture Graduate School. She aspires to return to school one day in order to obtain an advanced degree in International Affairs and Development. Scholarship Fund of Alexandria is a modern renaissance man, equally comfortable in the arts and the sciences. An exceptional musician, Kyle performed with the T.C. Williams symphonic, jazz and marching bands. He was drum major of the Marching Titans, band president and first chair bass trombone in the District X All District Band. An honors math and science student, Kyle tutored fellow students and won numerous science fair awards, including one from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Kyle earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia and received his law degree from Catholic University. He spent several years at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner before joining the Washington office of the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius as a patent attorney. Kyle credits the teachers and staff at T.C. Williams with fostering an environment where leadership and academic excellence are highly valued and the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria for providing students the opportunity to pursue higher education. Kyle Jae Choi T.C. Williams Class of 1988 B.S., University of Virginia, 1992 J.D., magna cum laude, The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, 2003 “More than the financial support, the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria gave me the confidence and encouragement to Tisara Photography strive for higher education at a critical time of my life to get me where I am today.” 2006 Annual Report Keith Imlay T.C. Williams Class of 1988 B.S., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1992 Tisara Photography “Though worlds have gone by since then, our high school experiences really shape who we are.” bought a house in Alexandria and plans to send his children to ACPS when the time comes. He likes living in Alexandria and running into other T.C. Williams graduates in the supermarket and on the playground. A Virginia Tech graduate, Keith holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and has traveled widely as a systems consultant with Price Waterhouse. He started his own information technology consulting business, KPI Consulting, in 1995. A perfectionist, Keith was described as one who expects perfection of himself and inspires it in others. Keith’s athletic talents were showcased when he rowed on the varsity eight for T.C. Williams as a junior and senior. Looking back on his high school years, Keith believes that high school is a “pivotal point” in life. Scholarship Fund of Alexandria grew up with a strong work ethic and a sense of determination fostered by parents who emigrated to the United Sates from Colombia. Luisa spoke only Spanish when she arrived, but by the time she attended T.C. Williams, she maintained a high GPA while being an active member of both the JROTC and ROTC Cadet Corps. Luisa served as a Cadet Corps Commander and Drill Team Commander and led her team to success and national recognition. Luisa also tutored ESL students and along the way found time to serve as a mentor to others. With the support of the Scholarship Fund, she went on to get her B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Virginia State University and today is fulfilling her “American dream” by pursuing a Ph.D. in Biophysics at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She plans a career in academics and research. Always striving to be the best she can be, Luisa follows the advice of her parents, who remind her that life is what you make of it and is too short to waste. Luisa Soaterna T.C. Williams Class of 2000 B.S., Virginia State University, 2004 Ph.D. Candidate, The Johns Hopkins University Tisara Photography “Life is what you make of it and is too short to waste.” 2006 Annual Report Julie Wilmer T.C. Williams Class of 1998 B.A., Princeton University, 2002 Tisara Photography “This school and community have meant so much to me and to my family. I am thrilled to be back giving all that I can to make it a rewarding experience for today’s students.” is a natural teacher and a born leader. While at T.C. Williams, she tutored several disadvantaged elementary students — one for three years. She participated in summer mission trips to the Appalachians and to an Indian reservation in South Dakota. She was selected for the Governor’s School for English, received the coach’s award in swimming, rowed on an undefeated T.C. Williams Women’s varsity eight and won multiple rowing championships in the United States and Canada. While at Princeton University, Julie tutored inner city children in Trenton weekly, spent two summers working with at-risk boys in New Hampshire, and was a member of the varsity crew team and of community-based Athletes in Action. She majored in English, received a certificate in Teaching, and wrote her thesis on “The Therapeutic Value of Autobiographical Writing for At-Risk Teenagers.” Julie returned to T.C. Williams, where she has taught in the highly regarded English Department for the past three years, served as a crew coach and volunteered at a soup kitchen in the District. Most important, the Fund recognizes our Partners’ commitment to education by awarding a scholarship in the name of the business or organization. The Scholarship Fund was honored to welcome two new Business Educator Partners to our growing list of supporters: The Alexandria Times published its inaugural issue in September 2005 and quickly recognized the Fund for its “work in making our community a better place.” The Fund recognized their generous in-kind contribution of advertising space, by naming The Alexandria Times a Business Educator Partner. Whole Foods Market opened its first Alexandria store in January 2006 and donated 5% of sales for their first Saturday to the Scholarship Fund. The Alexandria community turned out in record numbers, resulting in a festive store opening for Whole Foods and a donation of more than $11,000 for the Fund! Hassan Ali. 2006 Annual Report 19 20th Anniversary Gala ow do you “Light up the Night” in Alexandria, raise more than $185,000 for scholarships, and host the party of the year? Twentieth Anniversary Gala Co-Chairs Stephanie Clayton and Cathy Puskar found a way to do it. With the help of an enthusiastic committee of volunteers, they put the “fun” in fundraising with a spectacular evening of great food, a fantastic band, and a blockbuster auction. “We are thrilled that the Spring Gala has become such a popular and anticipated community event,” said co-chair Stephanie Clayton. “Our 20th Anniversary celebration was everything we hoped it would be and more. The dinner program was fabulous and the dance floor was hopping all night. We premiered a wonderful short film highlighting the 20-year history of the Fund. And we were thrilled to have our Honorary Chairman, former Virginia Governor Mark Warner, in attendance.” Warner, an Alexandria resident and long-time supporter of the Fund, delighted an enthusiastic sell-out crowd of 600 guests, expressing his personal support for the Scholarship Fund as “one of the first college access programs in the Commonwealth and in the nation,” that “serves as an inspiring example of the power of individuals and businesses working together for a common good.” Valedictorian Honor Roll sponsor, Jack Taylor, led the Gala Honor Roll, which included nearly 100 citizens and businesses who affirmed their commitment to educating Alexandria youth. The Spring Gala has indeed become a not-to-be-missed celebration, and sold out a month before the event. Mark your calendars now and make your Honor Roll commitment early to ensure your seating at our 21st Anniversary Gala, which will be held Saturday, April 28, 2007! They believe in supporting the General Fund of The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria through the Annual Fall Telethon! In 1996, the first Scholarship Fund Telethon raised just under $9,000 to support higher education for Alexandria students. The October 30, 2005, Telethon netted more than $97,000 to help deserving T.C. Williams graduates. The five-hour live broadcast featured a variety of talent including the T.C. Jazz ensemble, finalists of the Teen Talent Search and interviews with local celebrities. Williams class of 2002, had a very constructive summer. There have been plenty of Titans who returned to their high school alma mater to teach, but none have had the opportunity to become a summer intern to “build the future” of T.C. Williams. Franklyn is a senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in civil and environmental engineering. He spent his summer as an engineering intern for Hensel Phelps Construction Company, assigned to help build the new T.C. Williams High School. As excited as he was to play a role in creating the new T.C. Williams, Franklyn is even more grateful for the opportunity that led him to this point. Born in Sierra Leone, Franklyn lived in Kenya and England before immigrating to the United 22 Scholarship Fund of Alexandria States and enrolling at T.C. Williams for his sophomore year of high school. He quickly adapted to American schools. As a junior at T.C., college was only a hope — but a hope transformed into reality by his guidance counselor who encouraged him to take challenging college preparatory courses. He was awarded the 1971 Titans Scholarship from the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria and has received renewal awards each year. Above all, Franklyn credits the financial and moral Franklyn Beckley, TCW ‘02, points to the future. support from the T.C. family and the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria for getting him where he is today. or the first time in the Fund’s history, the Patron Saint Award for 2006 went to a husband and wife, Jan and Randy Kell. The Kells, parents of two T.C. Williams students, share a passion to provide opportunities for all our students, especially those who might not otherwise have the means to pursue their post-secondary educational dreams. As co-chair of the 2005 Titan Expo, Jan worked tirelessly to raise funds to support the Larry Trice SCA/PTSA Scholarships. Randy Kell, President of Mark Winkler Company, helped kick off the Fund’s 20th Anniversary by announcing a major gift of $75,000 to the General Fund. This extraordinary gift will have an immediate impact on students by funding two 21st Century University Jan and Randy Kell — 2006 Patron Saints Scholarships each valued at $20,000, two 21st Century Community Scholarships each valued at $5,000, and allowing the Fund to increase the first year value of all remaining general fund first-year awards from $1,500 to $1,800 in 2007. Jan and Randy Kell are truly Patron Saints for Alexandria youth! n recognition of its 20th Anniversary, the Fund awarded four 20th Anniversary scholarships from the General Fund to students in the Class of 2006: • Two 20th Anniversary Awards valued at $20,000 ($5,000 each year) for qualified need-based students intending to complete a four-year degree. • Two 20th Anniversary Awards valued at $5,000 ($2,500 each year) for qualified need-based students intending to complete a two-year degree or certification program. Sixty Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Awards were also awarded from the General Fund with a first-year value of $1,500 each (an increase from $1,200 in 2005). The 20th Anniversary awards represent a significant increase in the annual value of General Fund scholarships Jan and Randy Kell present awards to 20th Anniversary scholarship recipients. reflecting the major increases in college costs coupled with reduced federal and state funding. While the 20th Anniversary Scholarships represent only four of the 64 General Fund awards, they are evidence of the Board’s resolve to raise the value of the awards to ensure that no qualified Alexandria student is denied a higher education due to lack of financial resources. 2006 Annual Report 23 was lucky enough to be able to afford college right after high school; my parents saw to that. Not so for many of our T.C. Williams grads. The high costs of post-high school education present a serious roadblock for many families. I doubt if I would be able to attend college and graduate debt-free today. For a long time I’d been thinking that when I got around to writing a will I would include a gift to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. It would be nice to give back to the community that has nurtured me personally and professionally for the past 35 years. I liked the idea that I could help some of our students fulfill their own dreams and aspirations, become contributing members of society and maybe even citizen activists. This year, I wrote my will and named the Scholarship Fund as a recipient. I feel very good knowing that eventually some students will benefit from my good fortune and will be assisted with financing their education after high school. One last vote, I guess you could say, this time for our kids and the future! Ellen Harmon Government Teacher ACPS 1972-present Ellen Harmon has taught American Government in Alexandria Public Schools for nearly 35 years. She is highly respected by her colleagues, parents and students. Ms. Harmon developed an A.P. Government and Politics curriculum and internship program that nurtures students’ responsibility to become citizen activists. The decision to name the Scholarship Fund as a beneficiary in her will is an extension of Ms. Harmon’s personal commitment to her students and the future of our country.
