The Gardens at DCH and the DuPont Pavilion
The Gardens at DCH and the DuPont Pavilion
Our Executive Director
We started the fiscal year worried about what the economic
climate would do to the Delaware Center for Horticulture
and we ended the year on a bullish and enthusiastic note.
Our programs have continued to flourish. Wilmington has
its first urban farm. Friends of Parks groups planted trees
and perennials and nurtured eight different parks in
Wilmington. We established a pilot return-to-work program for five men in Delaware’s
criminal justice system. We completed and printed five significant publications this
year, and won two ECO Awards in a national competition for environmental
communications. We have been featured in more articles in the local and national
press than ever before, and in an increasingly diverse range of publications.
During the coming year, we plan to build on current programming and add another
educational component at the Baylor Correctional Institution garden. With the
support of funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, DCH
is embarking on an ambitious amount of urban forestry work in the City of
Wilmington and New Castle County; including updating the tree inventory,
building our return-to-work programs, and planting hundreds of street trees. We
have also begun exploring the feasibility of starting a capital campaign to increase
our meeting and office space and add green technology to our current headquarters.
I am especially proud of the lengthening tenure of our staff. Lenny Wilson just
celebrated 10 years of service. Gary Schwetz has served 12 years and Marcia
Stephenson has served 7 years. Joe Matassino, Anita Jimerson, Jen Bruhler,
Ann Mattingly and Patrice Sheehan will soon be celebrating 5 years of service.
We must be doing something right, that such talented and professional employees
continue to invest their time and energy with DCH.
In addition to the staff, I’d like to thank our wonderful Board and tremendous
Council of Advisors. We are extremely grateful for their effective leadership,
guidance, time and many personal contributions. It really is an honor to serve
with these dedicated and hard-working volunteers.
Pam Sapko
Executive Director
Our Board President
It has been my pleasure to serve as president of the
Delaware Center for Horticulture this past year, and
what a challenging year it was for us all.
As a professional in the financial services industry, I
saw first-hand how the ups and downs of the market
impacted people, the community and our charitable
organizations. DCH experienced some uncertain times, and had to tighten our belt
as did many other nonprofits; but I am proud to say that we have come out strong!
In 2009, DCH was dedicated to
ensuring the preservation of our urban
forest, to beautifying and building upon
neighborhood support for city parks,
and to providing urban agricultural
opportunities for Wilmington’s residents.
We are committed to seeing programmatic
growth continue in 2010 in a sustainable way.
With more than 600 volunteers—an
incredible number of volunteers for an
organization of our size—plus our dedicated
staff, Board of Directors and Council of
Advisors, I feel confident of DCH’s success
in the coming year. We have embarked
on a planning study to determine the
feasibility of expanding and improving
upon the Center’s headquarters. We
look forward to some exciting progress
with this effort.
Reclaimed balustrades from the oldVan Buren
Street Bridge provide a backdrop to Mexican
feather grass (Nassella tenuissima) and the
florescent flowers of purple poppy mallow
(Callirhoe involucrata) in the Gardens at DCH.
I wish to thank all of our donors listed in this report, many who have supported
DCH for decades. We could not have made it without them. Thank you.
Susan Fisher
President

Five men, all recently released from
prison or on work-release, planted more
than 150 trees along 12th Street. DCH
trained them in marketable landscaping
maintenance skills in this innovative
return-to-work program.The trees will
provide shade and improve air quality in
this northeast Wilmington neighborhood.
The success of this pilot partnership with
the Delaware Department of Corrections
and Department of Labor will be expanded
in 2010 to provide additional ex-offenders
with valuable job skills.

DCH and Longwood Gardens are
partnering to experiment with new
technology to enhance tree growth in
urban areas. Silva Cell is an underground
modular framework that protects the
roots of trees from soil compaction. The
goal is to lengthen the life span of street
trees, provide on-site stormwater
management, and prevent lifting and
damage of adjacent pavement. Here a
framework for research is being installed
