BIZARRE ORIGINS OF TODAY’S SAYINGS
The Saying:
The Saying:
WHIPPING BOY
Prince Edward, later Edward VI, had a boy who was whipped in
his place every time he was naughty.
The Saying:
WHITE ELEPHANT
In Siam (modern day Thailand) white or pale elephants were
very valuable. The king sometimes gave white elephant to a
person he disliked. It might seem a wonderful gift but it was
actually a punishment because it cost so much to keep!

WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF
In the ancient world grain was hurled into the air using a tool called a
winnowing fork. Wind separated the edible part of the grain (wheat)
from the lighter, inedible part (chaff). In Matthew 3:12 John the Baptist
warned that on the judgement day Jesus would separate the wheat
from the chaff (good people from evil).

THE FIREFIGHTER
SEPTEMBER 2012
September 8, 2012 is still a good date to remember if you like free food.
Our Fire Department is actively looking for new recruits. With this in mind we will be having a BBQ on Saturday
September 8, 2012 from noon until three. Everyone is welcome to come whether or not you are interested in joining us.
Bring your friends, your kids, your partners and your questions. Have something to eat, check out our trucks, try on some
gear and come enjoy the day with us.
For those of you who may have missed last month’s article I will quickly recap. Training consists of working toward three
goals: Firefighter Basic, Firefighter Advanced and Firefighter Level One. We have weekly training sessions as well as more
intensive sessions over a week or weekend in which the Fire Marshal comes to Faro and walks everyone attaining a
competency through the classroom and hands on work. By Level One you will be trained to enter a live fire situation in
full gear including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. I should point out that the Fire Marshal isn’t at all afraid to tell
people they aren’t ready to move on to the next level. This can be embarrassing but also reassuring. It’s good to know
that out trainers have our safety foremost in their minds.
If you feel you can’t achieve the higher levels remember that we also need truck drivers, pump operators, rehab
attendants, hose pullers and rollers, air tank fillers, truck washers, gear checkers and on and on and on. And who knows,
maybe you will surprise yourself and find that you want to push your limits, learn new skills and take your training to the
next level.
So remember, September 8, 2012 is a good date to keep in mind if you like free food and/or a challenge.
September 15, 2012 might also prove to be an interesting day.
As part of Fireweed Festival your Fire Department suggests that it might be a good idea to bring either a bathing suit or a
change of clothes for the kids. Adults who have children, who wish they were still children, or who remember how much
fun it was to be a child, are also very welcome. We might fire up our water cannon, or maybe our water curtain (imagine
lawn sprinkler on steroids), or maybe we’ll . . . . . . . . . but if I tell you that it might spoil the surprise!
Oh, and before I forget, don’t forget September 8, 2012 from noon until three.
Yours
BBBekk
Happy Hunting,
Faro RCMP would like to welcome hunters visiting Faro this season and wish you good luck. Back country; before you
embark on your trip please ensure you’re prepared. An important part of that preparation is establishing a plan laying
out duration, route and destination. Please identify and leave that plan with a responsible person to monitor your safe
return.
If plans include spending time on the many lakes and rivers; please be mindful that levels are still considerably high and
currents strong. Please ensure life jackets are worn and you have on board the safety equipment you would need in an
emergency.
Please wait until your safely off the water and out of the woods before consuming alcoholic beverages to celebrate your
hunt.
Campgrounds close mid-September hope you get out for the last couple weekends of camping.
The town of Faro recently saw a few road sign changes...the speed limit is now 30 km/hr everywhere within town.
Please be mindful of the change, please slow down and remember to wear your seatbelts.
School is back in session! Welcome to the new and returning teachers, hope you had a great summer. With the return
to school comes children playing and not always paying attention, please take the time to slow down and give them
some extra room when meeting them along the roadways.
Faro RCMP would like to invite anyone interested in becoming a Guard/Matron to please attend the detachment for
information to apply. We are seeking guards which is a paid position, please come by for details.
We are also seeking Auxiliary Constables. If you are interested in this very rewarding and important volunteer aspect of
Community Policing please stop by our detachment for more information.
Friendly reminder, it’s a good time to have furnaces and stoves cleaned and inspected to save you money and keep you
safe. Remember to check the function and replace batteries in CO2 and smoke alarms.
Have a great September!
To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will
have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555
and an officer will be contacted.
Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the
Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and
someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Community Mural Project
The Community Mural Project began in mid-July when Recreation staff set up time for individuals of all ages to come
in and draw or verbally submit their ideas for the Mural. The theme of the mural is “What does Faro mean to you?”
On August 8th, Jackie Irvine (Project Coordinator) and Tonya Freake (student Project Coordinator) took all the
submissions and started to incorporate them into one harmonious design. The drawing that resulted was then
colored by Tonya Freake and the design was transferred to the wall.
Painting began on the 21st of August and many people came and went all week and helped to complete our beautiful
community mural.
We want to thank everyone who gave us their ideas, drawings and input on this project:

POOL NEWS
As the weather begins to get colder our season
is starting to wind down. We only have a few
more weeks of swimming left. However even
though I am sad to have our pool season end I
can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful this
summer has been.
I have seen many little swimmers go from toes
in the water and fear in their eyes, to cannon
balls and Tarzan swings without even a
moment of hesitation. I just want to say
congratulations to all my little fish that have
taken lessons this year. You guys are amazing. I
have also seen many ‘big fish’ go from doing a
length or two and hoping to not pass out from
lack of oxygen, to powering through 1500m
(100 lengths) in no time flat (without even
stopping). Congrats to all my ‘big fish’ as well.
Dana and Angela have returned to school and I
am very sad to see them go. They were a huge
help this summer and I couldn’t have asked for
better co-workers. I would like to send a big
thank you to Angela for always being willing to
help out and for using her big voice to keep the
kids in line. A really big thank you also goes out
to Dana for taking every situation be it poop,
vomit or fire drills with a calm attitude and a
positive take charge attitude. You girls are
amazing.
For all you regular swimmers, be sure to check
out our fall schedule so you can keep on
swimming. If you haven’t started swimming
yet, it’s not to late. We are still offering aqua fit
classes and are still open for private lesson
bookings. Even if swimming is not your thing
I’m always happy to have people stop by and
say hello!!
Campbell Region Interpretive Center
Another season is almost gone and so far we had
about 1550 tourists coming through Faro. The
numbers are down, mostly because of the bad
condition of the Robert Campbell Highway coming up
from Watson Lake.
We want to thank everybody for their support
throughout the summer and hope to have your
support again next year.
We want to invite you to our Final Lunch
on Friday, September 14th, 2012 at Noon.
The Onsite-Gold Draw will be at 1 pm!
Attention Artists:
Please pick up your Art and Crafts on Friday,
September 14th after 1 pm!
Happy fall and happy swimming 

Faro Flying Dolphins Swim Team
Free Satellite?
I know! It sounds too good to
be true, but it seems to be
working. Our family was
dismayed when we learned
CBC would be stopping service
through bunny ears. That is
all we have used for the last
five years. But Shaw has
stepped up with a great
program and nearly free!
The Faro Flying Dolphins have wrapped up their swimming season and
what a season it has been! Just last month we had our Pelly River Swim
Challenge and our annual Swim-a-thon all in one day. The day started bright and
early with a jog facilitated by Elijah Bekk and Morgan Sawicki. Next we had an
absolutely delicious breakfast made by Eileen Owen and “Strawman”. Following
this we had team building activities in the gym run by Cayla Bekk and right after
that everyone hopped into the pool for some fun races planned by the lifeguards.
Following this event was another delicious meal of hot dogs, burgers, and fresh
salads. Then, the Swim-a-thon began.
This fundraiser was a huge success. We, as a team and community, swam
one length for every dollar raised. We swam a lot of lengths because we raise a
whopping total of $1,095! The swim team would like to give a huge thank you to
everyone who helped with, participated in, or facilitated an event on this day. It
would not have been possible without you!
The swim team coaches would like to take this time to thank and
congratulate all the 2012 swim team members;
Brian Bekk / Cyndy Bekk / Zachary Bekk / Michelle Lynch / Josie Lynch / Emily
Grantham / Lydia Grantham / Debra Edwards / Trinity Michell-Grenon
The improvement we have seen in your technique, strength, and
endurance this year has been phenomenal! We cannot express how proud we are
of all your hard work and dedication. Keep up the great work and we hope to see
you all next season!
Your 2012 swim coaches,
Alana Bekk, Dana Bekk, Angela Unrau
They are sending out free
receivers, dishes and remotes
and it will access at least four
channels (but perhaps up to
eight) with no monthly cost.
Just call Shaw Direct at
1.888.782.7602 before
November 30th and tell them
you want to participate in the
local television satellite
solution (LTSS). You cannot
have been a customer with
Shaw recently to qualify.
They will mail you a receiver
and remote. When that
arrives, call them and say you
live outside of their service
area and would like them to
send you a dish. Now you do
need to purchase a self-install
package right then too for
about $35.
Once that arrives in the mail,
find someone handy to set it
all up! We are just waiting for
our dish and self install
package to arrive and we
have our fingers crossed that
it all works out as easy as
they said it will!

Newsletter!
As the summer winds down and
school starts it is time to get ready
for the upcoming skating season!
Now is a great time to plan for new
skates. All of our children have no
doubt grown over the summer so it
is time to dig out the skates and try
them on! This way you have a few
more visits to Whitehorse to plan
for the new skates before the rink is
ready to roll! It is also a good time
to make sure helmets still fit.
Remember for all CanSkate and
Hockey sessions children must wear
CSA approved hockey helmets.
The Arctic Edge Skating club is
planning for a preschool session to
include younger children in a
playtime setting in a session that
lasts a bit shorter to accomodate
these younger children. We will also
have our regular CanSkate session
for people 6 - 100 years, and our
figure skating session. PLease
watch out in early October for
skating registration!
The Faro Mad Sled Dogs are
planning to sell calendars this year
again! We will keep you posted on
the details
See you on the ice soon!!

YUKON DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT
We would like to remind all hunters that the deadline for Kill Reports and
biological submissions for all species is due 15 days after the end of the
month in which the animal was killed. Therefore, if you harvested an
animal in September, it has to be reported no later than October 15th.
Also, a Kill Report is required to be filled out by all hunters. Although
you may have reported your kill to a Conservation Officer in the field,
called in to the TIPS line or called the Conservation office, please drop
into the Conservation office to fill out and sign the proper Kill Report. In
order to keep track of the number of moose harvested in 4:42-4:46, we are
asking hunters to report within 48hrs so that we can keep track of the
harvest as the season progresses however a Kill Report is required to be
filled out afterwards.
Anyone that will be hunting in the mine area please be respectful of
workers along the Faro Mine Road. There are many people working in
the area of the Mine Road, and not only right at the Mine site itself. The
staff are busy along all of the creeks in the area, as well as along the many
trails that go into the bush off of the main roads. Before you shoot,
remember to consider where you are – is it safe? If you’re not sure, don’t
shoot!
All successful hunters should also keep in mind that there are still a lot of
bears out and about, and to be careful how they hang/store their meat and
to properly contain and dispose of any waste so as not to attract any
unwanted visitors!
We would also like to remind all people of the importance of reporting
violations they may witness during the hunting season, or at any time of
year for that matter. To report violations, visit a Conservation Officer or
call our office at 994-2862. If someone wishes to remain anonymous,
they may do so by phoning the Turn-In-Poachers toll free hotline at 1800-661-0525, available 24 hours a day.
As the weather is getting colder out there and fall is definitely upon us,
please remember to refrain from feeding any wildlife such as foxes,
coyotes and wolves that may be more visible around town, and to always
keep pets safely indoors, in a properly fenced yard or on a leash. We
wish everyone success in their outings and please stay safe!
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT FARO COUNCIL
For anyone thinking of running in this upcoming Municipal election,
Municipal Government is the most approachable level of government, especially in a small community. The decision to run for council
may not be an easy one, and the commitment to the position is not possible for some. Each Yukon Community is different when it
comes to demographics, rates of pay, and on some responsibilities and local issues. Below are some common questions and answers
that may help you make your decision. Nomination papers are now available from the Town of Faro office or from Returning Officer
Sally Baker. Nomination Day deadline is 12:00 NOON on September 20th 2012.
1) Do you get paid for your time and/or travelling?
Council members receive a monthly honorarium . The Mayor is paid approximately $1,100 per month, and Councillors are paid
approximately $650.00 per month. There is a ‘per diem’ of $100 for attending meetings out of town. Travel expenses such as
mileage, meal allowances and accommodations are also paid after filling out a travel claim. Elected official s are also eligible for
Medical benefits. Medical benefits, water & sewer, and other deductions can be taken from your monthly paycheck upon request
from Finance Dept. Details are available from the CAO at 994-2728. Elected officials do not have cellphones, credit cards or vehicles
belonging to the Town of Faro.
4) Do I need to have experience in “government”?
A desire to contribute to the community, a willingness to share your views & concerns, an open mind and a respectful attitude would
be great assets. Remember - no one is good at everything...... but everyone is good at something!
3) How often do you meet?
Regular Council Meetings are usually held the First and Third Tuesday of each month, with the exception of July and August.
Traditionally, Council meets only once in July and August. Meeting are usually held in Council Chambers at the Town Office at 7pm
and usually conclude in 1-2 hours. Occasionally a meeting may last longer but rarely lasts beyond 10pm. Special meetings may be
called from time to time to address a specific issue and are usually held in the evening. Sometimes meetings with YG
representatives , other elected officials , mining company reps, etc. are scheduled during the day. While every attempt is made to
schedule meetings that would facilitate the attendance of all Council members, sometimes meetings are attended by those members
of Council who are able to fit the meeting into their schedule on that particular day. At its own discretion a Council may designate
‘Committee of the Whole’, or discussion only meetings at other times throughout the month.
7) What can I be involved in other than just the usual meetings? (AYC, committees, festivals, volunteering)
You are free to volunteer with any community organization or at any community event that appeals to you. There are opportunities
to represent Council at meetings outside the community from time to time depending on your interests and availability. There can
be involvement in the Association of Yukon Communities, festivals, local events, Commitees, etc. It’s FARO....There is always
something going on!
9) What single piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking about running for Council or Mayor?
Do not take things personally. Once you are elected your integrity will be challenged more often than you can anticipate. Don’t be
afraid to ask for the information you need to make a fair and reasonable decision. Remember that you will be expected to represent
the best interests of the community as a whole, not serve as a lobbyist for special interest groups. Take the opportunity to challenge
yourself. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish and what you will learn!

We now have in our collection the renowned
complete Fifty Shades trilogy by E.L. James: Fifty
Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades
Free. The Fifty Shades trilogy was developed from a
Twilight fan fiction. According to Wikipedia, this
series has reputedly set the record as the fastestselling paperback series of all time. Critical reception
of the novel is mixed.
We have received Faro in Watercolour by Larry Otto.
In his dedication, he writes, “I came to Faro in April
1979 as a medical doctor. To me, our town in central
Yukon is uniquely beautiful and the surrounding
scenery is breathtaking. In these watercolour
paintings, I have tried to portray Faro and its
surrounding area the way Faroites of all ages see it:
the places they daily visit, the incredible skies that
move ‘up’ Tintina Trench, and the seasons…”

REIKI
Reiki is a healing technique used for relaxation, stress
reduction and for balance of the chakras in the body. It is a
non-invasive procedure that has been compared to a relaxing
massage. The healing takes place when the practitioner uses
“life force energy” in a concentrated manner and directs it
into the patient’s body. It does not involve any pain, and in
most cases, removes any existing pain from the body.

Most people in Faro choose to place their
household garbage in our designated bear
proof steel bins located in convenient places
round the town. However if you choose to
make a trip to our solid waste site, for
whatever reason, we would ask that you
adhere to our new policy.
It would appear that people who make a
trip to our solid waste site throw their
garbage over the bank in a designated
dumping area. That practice appears to be
causing some problems at the site. No
sooner than people have left when the
ravens, gulls, eagles and an odd bear go into
“attack mode”. They see very easy pickings
and all the while the plastic bags that are
ripped open get spread all over, blown
around by the wind.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, if you chose to
take household garbage to the solid waste
site that will attract animals; we would like
you to put it in the two steel garbage
containers that are at the bottom of the
site. We dump out these containers every
Monday and Thursday providing you with
ample room to throw out any household
waste.
NOTE: grass cuttings, wood, steel, rug
scraps etc do not apply to this new
procedure. ONLY the household waste that
would be an attractant to wildlife is what
we are trying to exercise more control over.
With your cooperation we feel that we can
get better control of the windblown and
bird/animal scattered debris at our solid
waste site.
Thanking you in advance for your
cooperation. Any questions please call me at
994-2758.

Look up!
September 16 - New Moon. The
Moon will be directly between the
Earth and the Sun and will not be
visible from Earth. This phase
occurs at 02:11 UTC.
September 22 - September
Equinox. The September equinox
occurs at 14:49 UTC. The Sun
will shine directly on the equator
and there will be nearly equal
amounts of day and night
throughout the world. This is also
the first day of fall (autumnal
equinox) in the northern
hemisphere and the first day of
spring (vernal equinox) in the
southern hemisphere.
September 29 - Uranus at
Opposition. The blue-green
planet will be at its closest
approach to Earth and its face
will be fully illuminated by the
Sun. This is the best time to view
Uranus. Due to its distance, it will
only appear as a tiny blue-green
dot in all but the most powerful
telescopes.
September 30 - Full Moon. The
Moon will be directly opposite the
Earth from the Sun and will be
fully illuminated as seen from
Earth. This phase occurs at
03:19 UTC.
It’s hunting season.

Sasquatch/Bigfoot while
in the bush, please report
