Meet the New Book Bike!
Celebrate! Asian American
and Pacific Islander
Heritage Month
T
hrough performance, art, food, stories and
more, the Library celebrates the many
cultures of Asian Americans and Pacific
Islanders throughout the month of May. Feel the
thunderous rumble of the Japanese taiko drums
or be enchanted by the Bharatanatyam classical
dance of South India. Taste traditional and new
fusion snacks from different regions in Asia during Asian snack trials. Make a candy lei or practice Chinese brush painting. Take a Thai cooking
class with Virada Chaikul or learn how to make
fresh Vietnamese spring rolls and Thai chicken
salad. Experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony on Children’s Day. Get crafty with paper
arts, kitemaking, Star Wars-themed origami and
more! Cultural performances include Sounds of
China, storyteller Charlie Chin, shadow puppetry
with Daniel Barash, koto player Shoko Hikage
and others.
Check the calendar to see how your
neighborhood library is celebrating AsianAmerican and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
APIA Women Breaking History
Join us for a special APIA event and fair sponsored by The Association of Chinese Teachers
(TACT) and the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University, in collaboration with the Library. This year’s theme
focuses on APIA women who have contributed
to the making of America. There will be an APIA
Women’s Hall of Fame on display, various related
arts and crafts activities for children, teenagers
and adults alike, and a children’s book exhibition
of APIA women biographies, including books
authored by APIA women for all ages. In addition
to a variety of free handouts and an APIA women's reading list to kick off everyone’s summer
reading, the first 50 children ages 12 and under
will receive a complimentary goody bag.

P
edal-powered books are on the way! Thanks
to a Friends of the Library innovation grant,
the Library has geared up with an electric
pedal-assist bike and custom trailer designed by the Burgeon Group to roll out pop-up
services to San Francisco crowds. The bike is fully
equipped with the Library’s eMaterials, books, library
cards, and a bubble machine. Resulting from a community-driven naming contest, Spoke & Word will
take to the streets in May to bring more library services to where people gather and play. Spot Spoke
& Word at Giants’ games, Bike to Work Day, Sunday
Streets, farmer’s markets, the Pride Parade and more
this summer.
The Library is pumped to partner with San
Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Bay Area Bike Mobile,
Vie Bikes, The New Wheel, and local bike shops to
enhance our offerings of cycling-related programs to
support even more biking in San Francisco.

Countdown to the New Teen Space
The Mix at SFPL is coming to the Main Library in June. This new teen-designed space will house new
equipment and programs that San Francisco teens identified as vital to learning 21st century skills outside
of the classroom. In addition to being a library with books, the 2nd floor space will also include an audio
recording studio, a video production studio, a makerspace with the latest fabrication equipment,
a performance space, and areas where teens can hang out.

eLearning with Treehouse!
T
he Library has just added a new, free online learning tool to
our Articles and Databases collection. Treehouse is an online
video and interactive learning platform that uses a “howto” approach in the instruction of the design and development
of websites and mobile apps. Treehouse offers unlimited access
to self-paced classes in coding languages such as HTML, CSS,
PHP, JavaScript and Ruby; app development for iPhones, iPads
and Android smart phones; and basic computing. Projects are
taught step by step through a combination of short pre-recorded,
multi-part videos. Code challenges and quizzes follow the videos
to help ensure user comprehension. Treehouse is practical and
interactive, and provides structured tracks to specific goals in order to become job-ready for coding and appdevelopment career paths. Our city has seen an explosion of jobs in the technology sector, and Treehouse
provides an excellent opportunity for the Library to play a role in economic development for our residents.

his striking exhibit captures the beauty of the California coast from Mendocino, Point Reyes, and the

moods and diverse formations: storm tides crashing at Point Lobos; serene moonlit coves at Mendocino; and
fog encircling the Golden Gate Bridge. Deepening our experience, the exhibit contains poetry and prose from
Gary Snyder, Robinson Jeffers, Robert Hass, Jane Hirshfield, Jaime de Angulo, and other California poets.

Bodie, Abandoned Town
Photos by Aki Mori
Photograph by Aki Mori.
B
odie was a bustling gold mine town in the late 1870s through the late 1880s, with more than 10,000
residents, producing more than $35 million in gold and silver. As most miners moved on to more
prosperous mines the population dwindled, and after the mine was closed in 1942, Bodie essentially
became a ghost town. Located in Mono County, northeast of Yosemite, Bodie was designated as a National
Historic Site and a State Historic Park in 1962. Only 170 buildings of the town have survived, including a church,
schoolhouse, barbershop and saloon, in various states of deterioration. Interiors remain as they were left,
stocked with goods.
These beautiful photographs by Aki Mori capture the haunting nature of this gold country ghost town.
Born in Japan, Mori has lived in India and Saudi Arabia as well as her current residence in California.

May/June Selection:
Cinnamon and Gunpowder
by Eli Brown
Pirates, a kidnapping, gourmet cooking at sea, mystery and adventure,
marauding ships, and a beautiful pirate captain—this historical novel has
it all. It is 1819 in England, and Owen Wedgwood thrives in the kitchen of
his wealthy employer, producing mouth-watering delicacies using only the
finest ingredients, bolstered by the best equipment and knives that money
can buy. Then the ruthless Captain (Mad) Hannah Mabbot invades his peaceful domain, murders his employer
and carts him off to sea. Miles from fresh ingredients
and with only a meager pantry, Wedgwood must use
his imagination and skills to produce delicious meals
to save his life. Throughout this page-turner, it becomes
clear that both captain and crew have surprising secrets, and that the enemy may not always be who or
what it seems. NPR’s Petra Mayer refers to the novel as
“food porn and rip-roaring pirate adventure.”

Northern California Book Awards
The 34th Annual Northern California Book Awards will be held on Sunday,
May 3, at 1 p.m. in the Main Library’s Koret Auditorium. The NCBAs celebrate
the work of northern California authors, and honor the best in fiction,
nonfiction, translation, children’s literature, creative nonfiction, poetry and
young adult literature, and recognize the exceptional service to the community
by northern California writers through the Fred Cody Lifetime Achievement
Award and NCBR Recognition Award.
This year’s Fred Cody award winner and keynote speaker is poet Willis
Barnstone, author and editor of more than 70 books over six decades of
publishing. His new book of poetry is Moonbook and Sunbook. His selected
poems, Mexico in My Heart, is forthcoming in 2015.
The ceremony is presented by the Northern California Book Reviewers,
Poetry Flash, and Center for the Art of Translation, and co-sponsored by
PEN West, Mechanics' Institute Library and Chess Room, Women's National
Book Association SF Chapter, San Francisco Public Library, and Friends of
Willis Barnstone
the San Francisco Public Library.
You can learn robotics
at the Library? Yes,
and we have proof!
Our six robotics
teams using
LEGO™ Mindstorms
equipment will
demonstrate robotic
golf bots, merry-gorounds, conveyor
systems, motorized
cars, and skid steering tanks. Join in on the fun
and make your own motorized car.
Max Rebuschatis from Google’s Experience
Center Team will be on hand to encourage
the pursuit of robotics. Max came to Google
from the games industry (Electronic Arts/
Maxis). Simon Betsalel, representing our partner
Play-Well TEKnologies will also be on board to
explain why this is such an exciting and growing
profession.
SFPL Robotics League programming is made possible
by an LSTA Pitch An Idea Grant 2014/15 award. It is
supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of
Museum and Library Services under the provisions of
the Library Services and Technology Act, administered
in California by the State Librarian.
