Student Vehicle and Parking Regulations
The College strives to maintain a safe and
orderly environment on campus. To
protect students, faculty, staff and visitors
from automobile accidents, as well as to
provide security for motor vehicles
parked on the campus, the following rules
and regulations must be observed.

Currently enrolled students who drive
to campus should obtain a student
parking permit from the Security
Officer during registration or within
the first week of class.
2. Parking permits should be clearly
displayed in the lower portion of the
windshield on the passenger side of
the vehicle.
3. The parking permit entitles students
to park in any campus lot designated
for student parking. Certain areas
are marked for faculty/staff. Students
who park in unauthorized areas and/
or do not have a permit properly
displayed may receive a parking ticket
from the College.
4. Faculty, staff, or students may park in
any handicap space, provided they
are displaying a valid state approved
handicap permit.
5. Parking fines are $25.00 per ticket.
Students who have unpaid fines will
not be allowed to register for courses
in subsequent semesters and may not
obtain transcripts or educational
records from the College until the
student’s account is cleared with the
Business Office.
6. The speed limit on campus roadways
and parking lots is 15 MPH. The
speed limit is frequently radarenforced by the Clinton Police
Department.
7. Pedestrians have the right-of-way at
all times.
8. The College reserves the right to
temporarily close a parking area for
repairs or for special events.

Budget Time is Here!
I will be the first to admit
that anytime someone
utters the “B” word
(budget), whether at your
place of business or at
home at the kitchen table,
fear, dread, and a bit of eye
rolling quickly follow.
Most people consider a
budget to be restrictive
and will not slow down
long enough to plan a
proper budget for their
place of business or their
homes. Let’s take a
moment to reconsider the
purpose and necessity of a
budget. Maybe we will
discover a few reasons to
settle down and create that
much needed budget.
A budget unmistakably
lays out a crystal clear view
of what is coming in the
front door of your business
and what is headed out the
back door. Many business
owners only take the
temperature of their cash
flow once a month when
reconciling the checking
account. By this point, the
damage is done. Dave
Ramsey stated in a recent
article, “Budgeting isn’t
about giving yourself a list
of vague guidelines—well,
this month we’ll spend less
on eating out and more on
paying off the credit card.
No, it just doesn’t work
that way.” Budgeting will
help your business to set
limits ahead of time (long
before the bank statement
and the angst rolls in at the
end of the month).
Budgeting is also a
necessary tool to help

Criminal Justice Students Earn Certificate
Criminal Justice students in CJC 215 Organization and Administration earned a
certificate from the Emergency Management Institute supported by the Department of
Homeland Security and FEMA. Students chose a certificate track in either Introduction
to Incident Command for Law Enforcement or National Incident Management Systems.
In week five, students learned about the emergency management needs within the
criminal justice field and how it applies to various positions and agencies.

New Moodle Mobile App
Would you like to have Moodle at your fingertips? The Sampson Community College
Distance Learning Department has an app for that! The Moodle Mobile is the Moodle
official mobile application for Android and iOS. Its new design is built on HTML5 and
CSS3. Find it on Google Play and the Apple Store.

Nursing Opportunities

NAS 101 (Nursing Assistant I) will be available through curriculum for the Summer
2015 semester. This course introduces basic nursing skills required to provide
personal care for patients, residents, or clients in a health care setting. Topics
include communications, safety, patients' rights, personal care, vital signs,
elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, and mental health. Upon
completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills necessary to qualify as
Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. See your advisor
during course planning and registration on April 15-16, April 20-23, and April 2728.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)
Online Option is scheduled to be offered beginning Fall 2015. The application
deadline is May 1, 2015. Information related to admission criteria and admissions

Advising to Value Opportunities in Career and Education
Meet Mr. Gillespie, ACA Instructor
Mr. Gillespie may be new to teaching ACA 111 this semester, but he is not new to
Sampson Community College. He also serves as the Professional Development
Coordinator for the College in the Education Programs Division, and has worked at the
College for eight years. Prior to his work at SCC, Mr. Gillespie taught at Clinton High
School for three years. He has enjoyed his return to the classroom and says his favorite
part of teaching ACA is the students.

Student Reminders
EARLY REGISTRATION FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
 Early registration for Summer 2015 courses and Fall 2015 courses is April 15– 16,
April 20—23 and April 27—28. It is important for students to meet with their
advisor for course planning prior to registration. Summer classes start May 19th and
Fall classes begin August 17th.
FINANCIAL AID
 Students must apply for financial aid each year. It is best to apply as soon after the
Federal Tax Return(s) are filed and before March 15 if possible; however, all
students should have their FAFSA submitted by May 1 of each year. Apply online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov - (DO NOT USE www.fafsa.com—it is a scam and requires
students to pay a fee!)
GRADUATION
 2015 Graduates may pick up and pay for their cap and gown in the bookstore on
April 30, 2015 from 10 am - 6 pm.
SCHOLARSHIPS
 The Golden Leaf Scholarship application for the Spring 2015 semester is due
March 30, 2015. This scholarship is funded through the North Carolina
Community College System. The application was emailed to all students by Mrs.
Kim Davis, Financial Aid Assistant. Applications are also available in the Student
Services office.
 The 2015-2016 General Scholarship application is due April 15, 2015. The General
Scholarship Application is open to all Sampson Community College students in
addition to all graduating high school seniors who meet the minimum requirements.
By completing the general scholarship application, you will be eligible for all awards
you qualify for. All general scholarship applications must be submitted online.

Ambassador Scholarship Program
SCC faculty and staff may
nominate students who
meet the following criteria
to serve as a SCC Student
Ambassador for the 20152016 academic year.
2014-2015 Ambassadors left to

 Be a current full-time
SCC student who will
have
successfully
completed at least one
semester at SCC prior to
the ambassadorship
term which begins in
August 2015.
 Be enrolled as a fulltime SCC student (12
hours minimum) in
good academic standing
for the upcoming fall
and spring semesters.
 Meet and maintain a
minimum cumulative
grade point average of
2.5.
 Be
enthusiastic,
motivated, creative,
friendly, and possess
leadership qualities.
 Possess good written,
interpersonal, and group
presentation skills.
Nomination deadline is
April 15, 2015. The
nomination form is located
on the SCC website—visit

on SCC Foundation in the
top right corner. The form
is located under Student
Ambassadors.
All qualified nominees will
be interviewed by a
selection
committee
designated by the SCC
Foundation.
This
committee will make the
final determination in the
selection of ambassadors.
Scholarship recipients will
receive
scholarship
funding for Fall 2015 and
Spring 2016 semesters to
apply toward tuition, fees,
supplies and books.

Reflections
On Thursday, March 12th, four speakers spoke to several Student Support Services’
participants and community members. Speakers reflected on challenges they faced as
students and how they persevered. Melody Anders, a Student Support Services’
participant sang “If It Had Not Been for the Lord On My Side.” The speakers where:
Albert D. Kirby, Jr. Esquire (Sampson County Commissioner); Sue Miller (Vice
President of Academic Affairs - Retired); Barbara Pendergrass, Ed.D (Dean Emerita of
Students- Virginia Tech); and Shawn Johnson (Director of K-8 Duplin County Public
School System). TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded academic
assistance program with the goal to help participating students to successfully complete
their course of study at Sampson Community College and transfer to the four-year
college or university that will best meet their academic and career goals. –Student

Need Help Applying for Financial Aid?
Figuring out how to pay for college and completing all the necessary forms can be
complicated. The Educational Opportunity Centers Program based at Fayetteville State
University is set up to help you gather the necessary information to make good decisions
about your future educational plans, think clearly through the available options and
ensure that you receive all the financial aid to which you are entitled. One of their staff
persons visits the SCC Campus three days a week.
If you need help applying for Financial Aid, see Mr. Walter Palmer in the SGA
Conference Room located in the Warren Student Center.

What is Considered A Disability?
For post-secondary institutions, under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and
the Americans with Disabilities Act, a person with a disability is considered to be
someone: a) with a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or
more major life activities; b) with a record of such a disability; and/or c) is regarded as
having such.
Some examples of impairments that can have a substantial impact on a major life

New Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center (ASC) is now open for professional as well peer tutoring.
Both are free of charge to currently enrolled SCC students. All professional tutors are
SCC faculty members who will be offering help in the areas of math, English, biology and
chemistry. Peer tutors are also available if none of the professional tutoring times fit
your schedule. If you are a Student Support Services (SSS) participant, please see Ms.
Bass in K-118 to arrange tutoring. If you are not an SSS participant, please see Ms. Hairr
in Academic Success Center.
The Open Computer Lab has been relocated to the Academic Success Center. Use of the
computer lab is also free of charge to currently enrolled students.
