EDITORS’ NOTE
Hey Oak Park!
I’m sure you are all very well aware, but I’m so glad to finally be able to say spring is here! Put off

greatest way to unwind after exams. Of course we put in our usual features such as sports updates,
movie and book reviews horoscopes, and puzzles for you to enjoy.
With only a few weeks left of classes, and after a great year as your Opinion editors, it is time for us

OP Ultimate
BY Hockey Muse
Oak Park’s Ultimate Frisbee team finished off its second
season in history during the last weekend in May. The team
improved vastly over the season, and is steadily moving up the
rankings as our players become veterans in the sport, and the
interest throughout the school continues to grow.
The Opinion would like to thank the OP Ultimate cofounders, Chris Sproule and Heather Muir, Coaches Billy, Karli,
and Bailey, Teacher Advisors Mme. McIntyre and Mme. Nelson,
and all team members, both rookie and veteran, for their
excellent contribution to Oak Park Athletics.
Congratulations to everyone on your first two seasons
as a varsity sport; we’re
looking forward to even
bigger and better things
from OP Ultimate in the
upcoming years!
The Soccer Corner
BY Hockey Muse
The high school outdoor soccer season has come to
an end, with Oak Park showing very competitive teams in
both the men’s and women’s leagues.
Both teams played hard fought and aggressive
games all season, and are becoming fierce competitors in the
high school leagues.
Be sure to listen to the announcements for Provincial
results, and be sure to congratulate your Raider soccer teams
on great seasons!

OP Varsity Girls Compete at National Track Meet
BY Hockey Muse
On May 10th to 13th, eleven members of the Oak
Park Varsity Girls Track and Field team earned the
amazing opportunity to travel to Toronto, Ontario, to
represent Manitoba in the first ever Nike High School
Grand Prix. But the girls did more than just compete!
After settling into their University of Toronto
campus dorms and getting a good night’s sleep to recover
from the flight, the girls were ready to head to the track for
some practice time bright and early Friday morning. Then
came one of the biggest surprises of the trip: the Nike gear
unveiling.
The team was lead into the state-of-the-art locker
rooms at Varsity Centre where each athlete had their own
personalized cubby complete with race singlet and shorts,
track pants and jacket, warm up shoes, race spikes, and
brand new Nike bags to transport it all. It was breath-taking!
Next came a rush of exclamations and size adjustments,
leaving a room of shining faces as the girls set off on their
next adventure, flaunting their new Nike outfits with pride.
The girls spent the rest of their afternoon touring
Toronto historical highlights from the top of a double-decker
bus, admiring the view from the CN Tower, and shopping at
the Nike Store through their VIP athlete only entrance!
Finally, to close off the evening the girls met up with all the
other athletes that had come from across Canada to hear
some keynote speakers (including Jason Spezza from the
Ottawa Senators!) and have a delicious dinner all together.
Then it was time to hit the hay, as tomorrow was race day!
Saturday dawned sunny and a beautiful 20
degrees, perfect race weather. After a quick breakfast the
girls headed down to Varsity Centre for the opening
ceremonies, and then the races began!
Your Raiders put forward some amazing results
throughout the day, including medal performances from
Caila Kucheravy, Lindsay Smith, Desiree Bedard, and
Stacey Ormel. The girls all agreed that it was an amazing
opportunity to compete against the best high school track
athletes from across Canada and to race at a national
event!
Race Day finished off with a formal awards dinner
followed by a social for all the athletes to get a chance to
meet each other and have some fun!
The trip ended the next day with a morning spent
touring either the Royal Ontario Museum or the Hockey
Hall of Fame, then the whole crew headed down to the
airport and hopped on the plane back to Winnipeg.
Only four days, but what an experience it was!
The girls carried back new skills, brand new track gear,
and so many amazing memories that will last a lifetime.

The Wizard of Oz Musical 2012
BY Dariya Petryshyn
Oak Park’s Musical, The Wizard of Oz, was a magnificent
and funny event. Opening night, April 24, the gym was
packed with friends, families, and folks from the retirement
home. Everyone enjoyed the funny and talented group of
students who acted, sang, and danced. Each night, more
and more people came out to watch their fellow peers and
to enjoy the musical that everyone has been waiting to see
all year. With the finished product ready to be shown to the
public, the cast and crew were pumped all week. Everyone
who came out to watch the show left the gym wanting to
see it again (I know I did!) The songs were stuck in
peoples’ heads for several days (Most of the cast can
agree to that, because they could not stop singing the
songs that were sung throughout the night). Each show had
an amazing cast with certain different cast members for
each day and everyone did such an amazing job. If you
didn’t go see the musical, you’ll wish you had bought that
$10 ticket!
Congratulations to everybody, cast and crew; without
the talent and commitment that we have at Oak Park,
the musical would not have been the same. The Pit
Band also did an amazing job on playing all of the
songs that were sung and danced to, and even at
some points (hopefully none of you noticed) if the cast
sped ahead in a song, the Pit Band would catch them
and keep playing as if nothing happened at all. Good
job in covering all that up Mr. Waldera! Thank you to
everyone, make-up people, technical crew, the band,
cast and of course the most important people in the
whole show, Mr.Bettess, Mrs. Truscott, Mrs. Downey
and Mme. Ruus, who supported us the whole way
through. Can’t wait till next year!
HEY YOU!!!!!

also can have your moment to shine, sing your heart out and be yourself. This is the place to be!

Grad Retreat 2012
BY Hockey Muse
As the end of May draws near, inevitably so does
the end of the school year. Many of you may be thinking
“finally, only a few weeks left”, or beginning to stress over
that exam that’s already been looming over your head for
weeks, or perhaps some of you are already thinking ahead
to your next year as a Raider, what classes you’ll be taking,
what team you’re going to try out for, or what theatre
production you are going to act in.
But for the class of 2012, along with the rain we’ve
had for what seems like forever comes a flood of “lasts”, last
day in your favourite classroom, last time donning a Raider
jersey, last time seeing the curtain go down after your
closing lines. For many graduates this is one of the hardest
times of their high school careers. Recently many
graduating students had the opportunity to share those
memories of firsts, lasts, and everything in between with
each other at the annual Grade 12 Grad Retreat.
For three days, 116 grade 12 students were able to
spend time together at Camp Arnes while participating in
many fun and challenging events such as rock climbing, zip
lining, and ropes courses, as well as some more serious
activities surrounding their past years at Oak Park. The
students all felt that it was an incredible experience and that
it has brought the graduating class of 2012 together even
more closely, strengthening old bonds and creating new
ones as their final days as high school students draw to an
end. It was truly a life changing experience, and one that
will never be forgotten.
Special thank you to Erich Oswald and Caila Kucheravy for
their amazing and hard work that went into planning this
wonderful event, as well as their teacher advisor, Mrs. Hill,
and their dedicated team of helpers who all worked
tirelessly to create an event that will stay as a highlight of
our senior years long after we leave Oak Park.

Oak Park Senior Band Dominates at Chicago Festival
BY Hockey Muse
On May 17th to 21st the Oak Park Senior Concert
band took the 17 hour trek to Chicago, Illinois, to compete in
the Chicago International Band Festival, and what a great
performance they had! The ensemble of grade eleven and
twelve students captured the first place trophy in their
category as well as the overall title. Well done OP band!
After their morning of hard work, our young
musicians were able to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather
with some very exciting tourist experiences! The band visited
the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Navy Pier, the Museum of Science
and Industry, Six Flags Amusement Park, and had the
incredible opportunity to see a live performance of the Blue
Man Group after savouring some classic Chicago style deep
dish pizza!

Junior Band Trip to Minneapolis
BY Dance Machine
th
th
May 11 through the 14 was quite an exciting time for
Oak Park’s junior band program, as they packed their
instruments and set off to Minneapolis for the Music in the Parks
Music Festival. The festival, which takes place annually, attracts
a variety of youth musical groups, both of the instrumental and
choral variety. The groups are of both the junior high/middle
school and the high school ages, from all around the local
Minnesota area, the USA, and Canada as well.
Following the performance, the band hopped onto
the bus and headed to Valleyfair, the mid-west’s largest
amusement park. There, the group got an opportunity to
take in the rides, games, and at the end of the day, an award
festival where they were awarded the “Best High School
Concert Band”, with an overall “Superior” rating, quite an
honour considering that only two groups were awarded the
prestigious ranking. Following the afternoon at the fair, the
group headed back to their hotel and relaxed for the
evening, with a sense of pride knowing that they did a job
well done, and their hard work was over for the trip.
The band left Winnipeg the morning of Friday, May 19th,

The successful Dance Show of OP
“Impressive, amazing, and very well-performed!”
BY Marie Ladstaetter
On the 10th of April, during a break in school, I saw posters
advertising the dance show fixed on the walls. I didn’t have
anything to do that night, so I asked my friend if she wanted
to go there with me. She immediately agreed. But before this
article already starts to get boring, I should tell you more
about the actual show. My friend and I got good seats,
almost right in front of the stage where the Dance Show was
performed. Then, finally, the lights were turned off and the
excited conversations of the audience fell silent. Everybody
was expectant and curious about what would be shown right
away. Then, almost out of nowhere, a girl in sweat pants, tshirt and a cap appeared on the stage. She sat on a little
table and kept her head down, looking at the ground. The
spotlights were turned on the girl. After a second girl in the
same outfit had joined the stage, the music started to play
and they both began to dance. It was a slow song, called
Homeless and the dance to it was slow as well. But it wasn’t
just slow; it was harmonious with the song and rhythmic at
the same time. The dance was also partly sensual and
expressive. You could really see how the dancers loved to
perform to this song. So the dance show had a pretty good
start, everybody seemed to like it right from the beginning.
After the first dance one different performance came after
another. I am sure every taste was satisfied. There was jazz,
hip-hop, slow dances, lyrical, contemporary, modern, even
improvisations were shown and contemporary jazz. Actually,
none of the dances were prepared by the teacher; all of them
were choreographed by the students themselves. I think this
was one of the things that really impressed me, because
each dance looked very difficult and professional.
Before and after every dance was performed, Jennifer
Page and Sarah Adamson, two Grade Twelve’s, came
on the stage to announce the next dance and to
entertain the audience. This was perhaps the best part,
because it kept the whole audience in a good mood
throughout the entire show. There was no doubt that
none of the jokes remained without all the people
laughing out loud. After almost all the choreographies
were performed, Jennifer and Sarah surprised us with a
little special. The two “announcers” of the show had
prepared a dance themselves. Both performed together
to a new version of the famous and well-known song Let
it Be by The Beatles. As we all know, this song is pretty
slow and emotional; of course the dance was as well. It
was thoroughly captivating and passionate; the
audience was speechless and full of enthusiasm. No
wonder, the girls deserved a full round of applause. All
in all, the dance show of Oak Park was amazing and I
am sure everybody was impressed. I didn’t see any face
there that did not look convinced by the talents of our
students. I can just recommend to everybody who did
not go to attend the next show that comes up! If
anybody is still not convinced, you should take the time
to have a look in the dance room when a class has their
lesson. Maybe this will help erase any remaining
doubts.
Great job to all the performers! Thumbs up!

MAN UP
Laf’s Life Lesson
BY Rebecca Thomas
In the sports world, you often see or hear slogans, referring to stepping up, working hard, getting
down in the trenches, and many other “manning up” slogans.
Mme Laf had the privilege of going on the French Europe Trip with an exceptional group of students
and staff. Unfortunately, one of those students got very ill; it was not until that moment that Mme Laf
understood the true meaning of Man-Up. The difficult decision to leave one supervisor behind with
the unwell was answered by Mr. Comeau. As Mme Laf explains, “Man-up is about stepping up and
doing the right thing at a difficult time.”
Mr. Comeau was prepared to give up the rest of his trip to ensure the sick student was well cared
for.
From Mme Laf to Mr. Comeau: “THANK YOU for teaching ‘me’ the true definition of Man-up.”

Love Drugged, a novel by James Kilse
REVIEW BY Dolly Bunny
LOVE DRUGGED, written by James Klise was one of the
more interesting books I have read recently.
Have you ever felt different and wished you could be more
accepted? What if there was a pill that changed your sexual
orientation? Do you think this drug will be produced in the
near future?
LOVE DRUGGED tells the story of Jamie Bates, a fifteenyear-old high school student, same as us. He has a simple
strategy for surviving high school: fit in, keep a low profile,
and above all, protect his biggest secret – HE IS GAY. He
doesn't want people to look at him differently; he does all he
can to change who he is. He starts dating Celia Gamez, the
richest and most beautiful girl in school. Dr. Gamez is Celia’s
father and he is a drug pusher. His work is developing drugs
for pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately, Jamie knows
Dr. Gamez’s secret. Dr. Gamez is doing research and
developing a drug called Rehomoline for homosexual people
that changes your sexuality. Jamie thinks this is his chance
to be able to conform, so he steals this experimental new
drug that's supposed to cure his attraction to guys. But as
the drug’s side effects worsen and his relationship with
Celia heats up, he hurts the people closest to him and
ultimately may risk losing himself.
LOVE DRUGGED explores the consequences of a life
constructed almost entirely
of lies… especially the lies
we tell ourselves. Jamie
tells a lot of lies. He lies to
everyone, including himself.
I give this book 5 stars out
of 5 and think that this is a
book you don't want to miss
out on reading. It is a great
book that focuses on the
challenges of being a
homosexual youth, and
identity crises that these
teens must face every day.
The vow, directed by Michael Sucsy
The Vow is a 2012 love story starring Rachel McAdams (as Paige Collins) and Channing Tatum (as, Leo, Paige's
husband). The film is based on the book by Nicholas Sparks, which was based on the true story of Kim and Krickitt
Carpenter. The movie replays the love story between Paige and Leo, before a car accident results in Paige losing her
memories of her meeting with Leo, her career switch, and her lost relationship with her parents. We learn how they met
and fell in love, how she’s pursuing a career as a sculptor in Chicago while he has opened a recording studio. They live
in a very cool urban-neighborhood space.
But, when tragedy struck, her estranged parents, played by Jessica Lange and Sam Neill, seize the opportunity
of her amnesia to reclaim their little girl. Paige has to battle between her past life and her forgotten life, and ultimately
choose which one to live. Leo fights to make his wife fall for his heart once again as
Paige's parents battle to rewrite her past and turn her life into what they wished for her.
I love this movie, and though I did not read the book first, I plan to read it
someday. It's a sad love story similar to others by Nicholas Sparks (A Walk to
Remember & The Notebook) and I give it 5 stars on 5!
"I vow to always hold you to tenderness....
to live within the walls of your heart and to call it home.”
"I vow to love you now and forever. I promise to never forget that this is once in
a lifetime love. I vow to love you and no matter what challenges may carry us apart,
we will always find a way back to each other."

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, a novel by Gabrielle Zevin
REVIEW BY The Moon Cat
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin was
an easy book to get into. It starts off with the main
character, Naomi, waking up in a hospital after tripping
down some stairs - only to discover that she cannot
remember what happened to her for the past four years.
After leaving the hospital, she learns more about her life as
it is now, and the person she has become.
I was hooked on this book right away. Not only is the
premise interesting, but the book’s allure follows through to
the end. As Naomi goes back to school, she realizes that
she doesn't like all of the decisions she has made in her
life. It was interesting how she thought of her own life, and
in a way she was able to start over.
Naomi definitely a believable teenage character, which is
something I liked. The characters and the relationships
Naomi had with them were also realistic. She is no longer
speaking to her mother, who has gotten remarried and has
a new daughter after divorcing Naomi's dad (all things she
had forgotten). Her father does his best to help Naomi get
used to her life, but doesn't immediately tell her about his
fiancée. My favourite character was her best friend Will,
who is both funny and quirky. Even though she has
forgotten him as well, he knows everything about her and is
there for her immediately after she gets into her accident.
Another surprise for Naomi is that her boyfriend, Ace, is a
popular jock. However, she begins to have feelings for
another boy, James, who rode with her in the ambulance to
the hospital. Rethinking her boyfriend is only the start of
the changes Naomi makes in her life.
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac was very honest and
real. Although I'm sure most people reading it have
probably never had amnesia, it was still easy to relate to
Naomi. As well, I found that events happened in ways I
wasn't quite expecting. If you enjoy reading this book,
then I recommend another of Zevin's books, Elsewhere,
which has a unique take on the afterlife, and Remember
Me by Sophie Kinsella, whose main character also gets
amnesia but is an adult in her twenties. I give Memoirs 4
out of 5 stars and recommend it if you think it sounds
interesting. It is not a particularly long novel, but still
really worth the read.

Summer Reading List
BY The Moon Cat
Two months of nothing to do except what
you want… what better time to read a bunch of
great books? Here’s a list of books that will keep
you from getting bored during your
summer break:
Keeping the Moon
by Sarah Dessen
Really anything written by Sarah
Dessen would make a great
summer read, but this is one of my
favourites of hers. In this one, Colie
goes to spend the summer with her
aunt, and gets a job at a local
restaurant where she meets two
quirky best friends. The characters are all lovable
and readers will enjoy getting to know them all.
Bloodlines by Richelle Mead
This is the start of a companion
series to Mead’s Vampire
Academy. It follows the
alchemist Sydney, who is forced
to look after a vampire, and has
some of the original cast in it. It
will definitely not be a letdown to
lovers of the original series.
Georgia Nicholson
by Louise Rennison
If you have not yet read this series,
then do yourself a favour and pick
it up. This series follows Georgia
as she goes through high school
and all the embarrassing
adventures she has along the way.
It will have you laughing out loud
and is a light, fun read that’s
perfect for the beach.
Gone by Michael Grant
When everyone aged 14 and
older suddenly vanishes from
one town, leaving all the kids
and young teens trapped
under a large dome, you know
that things are not going to
run smoothly. Not to mention
that some of them are
developing powers … This is
a series that you will not be
able to put down.
The Time Traveler’s Wife
by Audrey Niffenegger
This is science-fiction without
seeming like it. It takes place in
modern day and follows the love
story of Henry – who is forced
into different periods of time
unexpectedly – and Clare – who
has to deal with loving a man
who is constantly leaving her
behind. If you like love stories
then this is the book for you!

The Lonely Hearts Club
by Elizabeth Eulberg
I’m sure that not dating in high
school is something a lot of
people can’t imagine, but Penny
is sick of all the trouble boys
have caused her. She starts a
club with some friends vowing
not to date until they graduate –
too bad she’s just starting to
have feelings for her friend
Ryan. This book was actually a
really good read, one that girls
will definitely relate to.
Mediator Series by Meg Cabot
In this series, Suze can see ghosts,
and has just moved to California with
her mom only to discover a cute ghost
is already living in her bedroom. Her
tough, no-nonsense attitude is perfect
for all the butt-kicking she has to do,
especially when she meets a ghost
out for revenge at her new school.
Perfect Chemistry
by Simone Elkeles
This is a quick book to get
through and is about a Romeo
-and-Juliet type romance
between gang member Alex
and cheerleader Brittany. This
is good if you are looking for a
light but gripping read.
Eragon
by Christopher Paolini
This is the first book in the
series in which a boy
named Eragon finds a
dragon egg, leading him to
start on an adventure to
learn more about the
responsibilities that this
entails and attempting to
overthrow a corrupt king.
Perfect for die-hard fantasy
fans, and the summer
leaves you time to read
most of the books in the series.

by Moira Young
This was a fast paced book, with
lots of action to keep readers
hooked. Saba’s twin brother is
kidnapped, and she has to go
after him, dragging her younger
sister along with her, not to
mention facing cage fights and
giant worms along the way.
Also, the author is Canadian!
I hope you enjoy these books. Have a great summer
everyone and happy reading!

Watergate Cupcakes
BY Brown Eyed Girl
A nice light treat for a hot summer’s day
I recently learnt this recipe from a friend of a friend and finally discovered the secret to springy, fluffy cupcakes. It’s soda! The
great thing about this recipe is that it’s pretty open to the baker. You can use any flavour of cake mix, pudding mix, and soda, to
really make it your own. Follow these steps and it’s a piece of cake!
1 pkg. cake mix
3/4 c. cooking oil
3 eggs
1 c. soda (1 can)
1 pkg. pudding mix
Combine all ingredients in the above order and mix well. Pour into greased muffin pan. Bake at 350º for about 20 minutes or
until cake springs back at the touch, and cool. Makes 18-24 cupcakes.
If you’d also like to add icing, here’s a quicky recipe for a tasty topping. Again, use any flavour pudding mix (fyi-lemon pudding
is delicious!).
Watergate Icing:
1 envelope dream whip
1 pkg. pudding mix
1 c. milk
Whip until stiff and spread on cupcakes. And now, we
eat!

Don Quixote
Don Quixote and Sancho Panza ride again! Here they are
guided by their creator, Miguel de Cervantes, in person. In
this "buddies on the road" saga, the intrepid Don Quixote and
his loyal squire, Sancho Panza, are spurred on by Cervantes
to battle giants- or are they windmills? Rescue princesses- or
are they swineherds? Attack armies- or are they sheep?
Their world, the vital, dangerous La Mancha region of 17thCentury Spain, is peopled with fools and shysters, nobles and
priests, merchants and actors. Idealistic Don Quixote and
pragmatic Sancho Panza learn to deal with the unexpected
and the inexplicable as they travel through La Mancha. Their
friendship deepens as their adventures grow more and more
challenging and complex. This performance brings the whole
story to life with the excitement, the bawdy humour, and the
deeply moving humanity of the masterpiece intact.

Horoscopes
BY Dariya Petryshyn
Taurus – (The Bull) April 20- May 20
Communicate with your inner self. Think
harder when it comes to doing your
exams for the final semester, because if
you do, you will surely find better marks
sitting there on your report card then you
may have seen from last term.
Gemini- (The Twins) May 21- June 20
Try doing something new and find some
new people to hang out with because the
end of the year is on your tail just waiting
to snatch you away from all the new
possibilities that are still available at
school.
Cancer- (The Crab) June 21- July 22
Are you getting into the spring mood? All
you need to have to get into the fling of
spring is a little self-confidence; sing
outside, smell the flowers, for crying out
loud even dance in the rain. Show
everyone how happy you are that spring
is finally here and that school’s almost
over.
Leo- (The Lion) July 23- August 22
Don’t open your wallet up too much.
Lately you have been spending WAY
more than ever before. Of course, trying to impress
everyone by showing off all you’ve got is the thing that’s
making you spend. Lay off the machine and use what you
have for a while.
Virgo- (The Virgin) August 23September 22
Virgo, you are blooming in the field of
everything you do. When you look around
the house for something new to wear to school because you
think that you don’t look good enough, think again. Don’t try to
change who you are.
Libra- (The Scales) September 23October 22
Be happier this spring. Summer’s in the air, only one more
month of school left and then you get to relax. Remember
that no matter how badly you want school to be over with,
that it’s not that long ‘till summer comes and you can hang
with your friends every day at the beach.
Scorpio- (The Scorpion) October 23- November 21
Don’t let life nip you in the bud. If you get
a new idea thrown at you last minute and
you really like the idea, use it! Don’t keep
it for another day and then wish you did
use it at the time. You will be sorry if the
road curves in the other direction.
Sagittarius (The Archer) November 22- December 21
If you aren’t on any sports teams at Oak
Park, join one next year! Or even just
play a game of catch or something that
involves your hands. You need to let
loose and be yourself.
Capricorn -(The Goat) December 22-January 19
Get your spring groove on and smell the
flowers. It’s time to leave winter behind
you and expect the unexpected for the
spring and summer season.
Aquarius- (The Water Bearer) January 20- February 18
Clean up your act. I mean, clean up
around yourself. If you are finding
yourself losing your homework, books,
clothes etc., start off by cleaning up the
places where you put all of your stuff.
Pisces -(The Fish) February 19- March 20
Love is rising from your heart to the
person whom you have deep affection
for. Leaving them wanting more or
missing you every second of the day will
surely get the two of you closer. If you
are not a couple, one way to get his/her
attention is to smile and talk to them more than before.
Aries – (The Ram) March 21- April
19
Be careful not to be swept away by
emotion. Your emotion is trying to connect with you and tell
you that if you think you are seeing something that is not
there, it may actually be there.
