President’s Message
Vern
Morris
President CPCO
of Florida
On May 3rd CPCO presented CEUs in Cocoa.
Unfortunately, unlike our CEU sessions at Miami and Davie, the turnout was less than we
expected. We had planned on having Bruce
Ryser from FMC do Lawn and Ornamental,
Jerry Shappert from the Bug Doctor was to do
CORE, Jim Shuford from Biologics was to do
GHP, Charlene Mertz from Nisus was going to
do Termite and I was to finish off with Fume.
I want to thank you all for offering your help,
but unfortunately, our turnout did not warrant having speakers driving across the state to
teach the class. So it was decided that Jerry and
I would teach all the categories and approved
subjects with just a couple of days notice.
We will be holding another class in Orlando on
October 31st at Univar’s office and Jason will
be sponsoring lunch again. Yes that is Halloween so you can expect the group to be dressed
up for the occasion.
As Mike mentioned in last month’s magazine
Operation Cleansweep is once again in operation, and you can thank CPCO for helping
make it happen. CPCO was also the only pest
association to attend the planning session for
the operation. Board members Dave Schlessinger and Jerry Shappert took time off from
running their companies to represent CPCO.
Thanks guys. So gather up your old chemicals
and make the phone call 877-851-5285. We
It was time to improvise. I took L/O, GHP and don’t know when you will have an opportunity
fume while Jerry did Core and Termite. For like this again.
Lawn and Ornamental I went over the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) requirements I would encourage everyone to get their 2015
for vehicles over 10,000 pounds. Then we went calendars now. Why? So you can circle March
outside and did a DOT vehicle inspection on 27th. That’s the date for the Orlando Field day,
a lawn truck in the parking lot. The truck we and you don’t want to forget and schedule any
used had plenty of violations, from not having stops for that day. This will be the biggest, the
enough tire tread to tools not being strapped best field day ever. And while you’re at it block
down. There was a fire extinguisher on the out your technicians for at least half a day so
truck but the gauge indicated that it had no they can get their tech training and experience
charge. We finished up with a presentation I one of our great guest speakers.
put together about the citrus greening disease.
Till next time,
Jerry did his CORE presentation on safety once
before, it was nice that this time he was able to use
a projector for it. He did a great job once again.
Then it was my turn to do GHP. As I said this
was a short notice deal, so I had decided to use
some material that Mike gave me about controlling ants. Well about halfway through I could see
heads starting to bob as some people were starting to nod off. Fortunately just about that time
Jason Hart from Univar popped in with pizzas,
the smell alone woke everyone up. After lunch it
was Jerry’s turn to do Termite. I want you to know
that he didn’t have any more time to prepare then
I did, but his presentation was excellent and no
one was nodding off. Thank you Jerry for taking a
day off work, driving down from Ocala and even
spending money on a room. His help was very
much appreciated.

October 2014 - CPCO Advantage 5
The Big Shows are Coming to Florida in 2015
and What Can We Do For You?
Everyone likes a big show, with lots of stars and big
productions. There are singers, dancers and bands
playing. There is lots of excitement and fun for all.
Everyone has a good time. It sounds terrific, but
there is one flaw. We work in pest control and we
are talking about the CPCO Field Days and CEUs.
Not that our Field Days are dull and boring, quite
the contrary. The quality of the programs offered
Mike Beckers is second to none and all the attendees pick up
Executive Vice President some new information to use in their businesses.
In addition to the great classes, there is a trade
show and some good food. You can get all of your
CEUs and/or technician training in one day, plus
the trade show and a chance to see old friends. It
would seem that everything is in place. Except
maybe a little spark, some pizazz, some glitz, some
glamor. So what can we do to spice things up? How
about some star power? CPCO will be presenting
two “Super Field Days” in 2015, one in Orlando
on March 27 and one to be announced later in a
South Florida location.
The lineup for the Orlando program includes: pest
control celebrities Dr. Austin Frishman and Dr.
Phil Koehler, local TV and radio personality Tom
MacCubbin, DACS Chief Dale Dubberly, Attorney
Mark Ruff and more. It is a “Who’s Who” of the
industry. You will get the latest information form
the experts in the industry. As Vern and I have
mentioned before, be sure to bring your technicians to the event. Yes, they need their tech training, but why not let them experience learning from
the best? It will be a treat for them, and an event
that they will talk about. Maybe they will share
with their customers some of the tips that they
will pick up. I worked for a company in Central
Florida years ago that sent their employees to every
seminar and event possible. It didn’t take long for
us to get a reputation as the “go to” company in
pest control. Isn’t it time to give your employees
an educational boost?
Orlando is a great location, and for you folks in
Daytona, Melbourne, Lakeland, Sanford, Kissim6 CPCO Advantage October 2014
mee and Deland it is in your backyard. How about
PCOs in Tampa and Ocala? Even Jacksonville and
the Clearwater/St. Petersburg folks are within driving distance. CPCO is giving you plenty of lead
time, over five months. Be sure to mark the day
and get your employees pumped up. It will be a
great day.
What Can CPCO Do For You?
Speaking of programs for your business, what
questions do you have about the “business” aspects
of pest control? What subjects would you like to
see covered in a Business Boot Camp? How about
clarifying the sales tax rules? There are always
questions about hiring and firing. What questions
can you ask durring an interview? How would like
to have form to use to pre-screen applicants? We
also get questions about the nightmare of overtime pay and other wage and hour issues. How do
you conduct a disciplinary action review with an
employee? A form to document the process might
be helpful.
I am sure that you have plenty of issues that you
are uncertain of and would like to consult with
someone who has the answers. So here is your
homework assignment: take the time to make a list
of the topics tat you would like to see covered at
a Business Boot Camp. Keep a running list and
when you sure that it is complete, fax or email it to
us at CPCO. We want to plan a program that will
benefit YOU. As always, remember that we work
for you.

NUVAN® Directed Spray™ Aerosol Offers Bed Bug Control
New Aerosol Spray Provides Pest Management Professionals
Additional Tool for Control of Structural Pests
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (October 9, 2014) – AMVAC Chemical Corporation, a business unit of
American Vanguard Corporation (NYSE:AVD), has introduced NUVAN® Directed Spray™ Aerosol,
a new aerosol spray that is highly effective against bed bugs, cockroaches, fleas and 21 other
structural pests.
NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol is a highly effective, broad spectrum insecticide that can be used to
control bed bugs, bed bug eggs, beetles, carpet beetles, cockroaches, crickets, fleas and other
pests. NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol provides almost immediate control of the labeled pests.
The active ingredient in NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol, dichlorvos (DDVP), is one of the most
effective active ingredients to use against bed bugs, including pyrethroid-resistant bed bug strains.
The active ingredient, DDVP, has a long history as a successful and efficacious pesticide product.
“NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol provides the pest management professional a lot of utility – from
where it can be used to the broad spectrum of insects it controls,” commented Jeff Alvis, Business
Manager, AMVAC Environmental Products. “NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol has both contact and
vapor action to affect and kill insects present in the immediate treatment area. For pest
management professionals, this key benefit helps control pests not in the visible treatment swath
and not contacted directly with spray droplets.”
For effective bed bug control, NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol should be applied directly to bed
bugs or areas where they are known to have been present. Pest management professionals should
inspect and treat areas where bed bugs may hide, travel, harbor or lay eggs.
NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol will not stain or discolor the treated area; however, an applicator
should conduct a test application on a hidden area of the target surface prior to application. NUVAN
Directed Spray Aerosol may not be applied as a broadcast treatment or space spray. For localized
application, a two second application of product per four to five linear feet should be applied from a
distance of 12” to 15” from the treated surface. Treated areas should not be reoccupied for at least
two hours after application.
“NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol gives pest management professionals a safety net as it provides a
broader window of opportunity for control,” said Paul Bello, urban and industrial entomologist. “I
compare it to duct tape – it can fix almost anything.”
Available for use in a variety of locations, NUVAN Directed Spray Aerosol can be applied in
localized areas of homes, commercial buildings, apartments, cabins, garages, basements,
factories, hotels, warehouses and other commercial and industrial buildings. Additional areas
include non-food and non-feed areas of food/feed processing, manufacturing and service
establishment sites, including lavatories, floor drains, entries and offices. Consult the label for
additional application sites and full application requirements.

AMVAC, visit amvac-chemical.com, or contact your local AMVAC representative.

WOTUS Proposed Rule Comment Period
Extended a Second Time
WASHINGTON, D.C. — RISE (Responsible Industry
for a Sound Environment) supports the decision made
by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to
extend the public comment period on the Clean Water
Act “waters of the U.S.” proposed rule until Nov. 14,
2014.
The rule would significantly impact how homeowners
and professionals can treat property near any water,
including man-made water bodies, rights-of-way, golf
course ponds, ditches and flood plains due to expanded permitting requirements under the Clean Water
Act. During this extended public comment time, the
Scientific Advisory Board will release its peer review
on the Connectivity of Streams and Wetlands Report.
The comment period originally ended July 21, 2014,
and was extended to October 20, 2014, before EPA’s
latest announcement.
“EPA’s decision to extend the public comment period
to November 14, shows the complexity of the proposed
rule and its definitions, and the need for extra time so
the public can provide meaningful comments,” said
Aaron Hobbs, RISE president. “The SAB’s peer review
of the Connectivity Report is an important piece to
understanding how EPA defined certain keywords in
the rule.”
“The proposed rule would cause significant consequences for communities by jeopardizing important
applications for public health and the environment.
This comment period extension is the second one issued on this rule, and really shows the difference our
grassroots and members are making with their engagement,” Hobbs added.

We (FDACS) have been doing some special enforcement
operations around the state for fumigations, and have
found some different issues. One of these issues was that
the fumigators are allowed by the labels to leave the first
floor windows open during the fumigation period including the passive aeration period which is when the tarps
have been removed and the doors still have the secondary
locks and signs posted on them, which is approved according to the labels. The following issues are violations!

•
Not using the warning agent Chloropicrin (PIC)
Not using the proper personal protection equipment
(PPE) for Sulfuryl Fluoride: splash resistant goggles or
full face shield (DO NOT wear gloves) Respiratory protection self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when
air concentrations in the breathing zone exceeds 1 ppm or
when concentrations are unknown
Not using the PPE for Chloropicrin: protective eyewear
or face shield (NOT goggles), chemical resistant gloves.
Respiratory protection self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when air concentrations exceed a level of 0.1
ppm
Not completing the initial active aeration period (minimum of 1 hour)
Not completing the proper passive aeration procedures
(minimum of 6-8 hours)
Not notifying the Department prior to conducting a fumigation
Not properly posting the structure with warning signs
Not using secondary locking devices
Not having two trained persons present when required
Not transporting the sulfurly fluoride cylinders correctly
Not checking the entire structure (including crawl and attic spaces) prior to applying Chloropicrin

Aardvark Pest Control Co
Hello CPCO members;
My last article, entitled ‘History Forgotten is History Repeated’ generated quite a bit of feedback. So, after some conversation with CPCO
and DACS; I have decided to withhold my subsequent articles on the
subject. CPCO has pledged our support to the DACS reorganization
effort and has offered our help in any way to make this transition a
successful one. However; during the Pest Control Commission era,
when we were regulated by two different entities; Florida Department
of Health and the Pest Control Commission, it was a disaster.
By now all of you know about the merger of Certified Operators of
Southwest Florida (COSWFL) and CPCO. CPCO is running the administration for COSWFL. COSWFL maintains its independence and
CPCO handles all of the administration, like CEU’s and communications.
We held our first CEU class in Ft Myers for COSWFL and CPCO members on Saturday, September 27th. The venue was really cool: Ft Myers
Bass Pro Shops. They have meeting rooms upstairs with A/V equipment and their staff was very co-operative. Problem is, the room is
adjacent to the gun shop. They were having a sale. Needless to say, it
was difficult to concentrate on teaching with so much temptation just
across the hall.
I want to thank John Bergquist, field supervisor for the new Bureau of
Inspections and Incident Response. He is doing a great job explaining
the AES re-organization to our members. He has taken time out of his
busy schedule to speak at our West Palm Field Day and at our Ft Myers CEU session. The re-organization is complex and John has fielded
many, many questions.
Michael Beckers asked (volunteered) me to help in Ft Myers. I saw this
as an opportunity to teach a group of certified operators I’ve never met
before. Mike and I decided to switch back and forth on all subjects as
not to bore our subjects and keep our voices from breaking. All along
Mike and I joke with and about each other. We do this to keep attention
up and to add some humor to the day. So, after the first segment, which
is always L&O; I was approached by several attendees expressing their
concerns on why we “don’t like each other”. I explained our “feisty”
relationship at the beginning of core (LOL).
John Bergquist began CORE by explaining the reorganization process
and what the future holds. Upon completion of his explanations the
questions began. The number one topic: What is DACS doing about
illegal operators! Will the reorganization provide increased enforcement? Sounds familiar, doesn’t it!
Operators have taken a first step into a much larger world.
The next stop on the Mike & Mike tour was Homestead. Way down
south too. At the South Florida Research and Education Center. We
had a mixed but hard core group of Certified Operators. I always look
forward to teaching to a group who has been in pest control longer than
I have.
Dr. Henry Mayer, Urban Horticulture Agent, UF/IFAS Miami-Dade
County Extension gave an excellent presentation on turf and landscape
pests and identification. A big thank you goes out to Dr. Mayer.
And then there was Davie. Always a big and lively crowd of passionate
pest control operators; eager to ask lots of questions. You better bring
your ‘A’ game when teaching in Davie. I want to thank Rod Smith from
Bell Labs for giving insight on rodent control. He displayed an interesting video of the behavior of rodents at an incredibly infested home and
around traps.
Dr. Rudi Scheffrahn deserves a big thank you for his very informative
presentations on all-things termites. I will make a simple statement: In
the world of termite research and knowledge; there is Dr. Rudi and then
everyone else!
My L&O program was on the effects of PH on the products we use.
This generated many questions and lengthy discussion. Like I said; the
Davie crowd is very knowledgeable and always asks technical questions.
Also, your answers better be factual or the Davie crowd will ‘call you’ on
it. Mike and I presented CORE and that too, generated many questions
and lots of discussion. The Broward County pest control consumer is
in good hands.
On the legislative front: There is a possibility that Chapter 482 and FAC
5E-14 will need addressing to comply with the reorganizationof DACS
and the creation of Bureau of Inspection and Incident Response and
Bureau of Licensing and Enforcement. If the general election goes as
predicted, we will see movement on water quality issues and hopefully
fertilizer application. Too early to get into details. However, CPCO
is negotiating these issues with involved parties. As always CPCO will
keep you informed.
Michael Wilson, CPO
Aardvark Pest Control Co
Legislative Advocate,
Certified Pest Control Operators of Florida, Inc.
Anyway, Mike and I received positive feedback from those who attended. They stated that our subject matter was new, informative and well
presented. My takeaway is that the South West Florida Pest Control

Winning the Anecdotal Fight Is Just A Myth
By Jerry Schappert
CPCO Member
Owner, The Bug Doctor, Inc
Not to long ago I wrote an article titled Chasing The Exceptions; The Route Killer. It’s an article where I explain the pitfalls
of a small company owner or route tech who exhausts far too
much energy and resources trying to solve that one dilemma that
“doesn’t fit the mold” A problem that just creates more problems
or that get’s stickier with every layer of evidence you think you’ve
uncovered. In other words, a waste of time….And you know
what?,, since writing that I’ve STILL caught myself doing exactly
what I said I /you/we/ shouldn’t do!!! What’s up with that?!!!
Well– I’m happy to report that I’ve also held true to my word
a few times too. Actually backed away from a few jobs that although may have been good short term money, I’m pretty sure
would have been a drain.
Also, in a rare moment of clarity I came to a realization that the
“chase” that I spoke of in that article almost always has it’s roots
in anecdotal evidence. And while identifying what may or may
not be an exception isn’t always so easy, anecdotal evidence is
always pretty clear and this may help you steer clear of wasting
your precious time,
Have you ever heard this before?
“Whenever you see ONE roach, there are a thousand you don’t see.”
OR
“Rats get into your home via your toilet”
These are classic lines of thought or beliefs and I’ve heard all
types of people recite them from the everyday housewife to the
college professor. In fact, these are so engrained that the speaker
who believes these to be true may have never had either pest inside their home. They’re simply repeating what they’ve heard so
often and come to believe…so it must be true right?
The fact is, I’ve done tens of thousands of roach jobs over 30
years and perhaps as many rat services. In all that time I’ve found
one rat actually in a toilet. (think he drowned trying to get water)
and oodles of accounts that had a roach or two…but I never did
find the 1000. (german roaches) However, even with this strong
evidence (or lack there of), even I can’t un-convince a person
who believes this even though they have nothing to back it up.
unfounded. Although rats using your commode as an entry
point is rare, it does happen. In fact if you read my article on the
subject and the many many comments on it–you’d think it was
an everyday occurrence. However when you consider that there
are over 125 million homes in the U.S. alone–the small number
who do report this happening wouldn’t move the percentage meter even a tic. It’s just that rare.
A myth on the other hand is something different all together.
Most of us have heard the one about the rat or mouse that eats
the poison, searches for water and then explodes. This story is
very popular- I’d say just as well known and recited as the toilet
story. But exploding rats is something that’s NEVER happened
and there is no bait out there (never has been) that even comes
close to causing this. It just isn’t true.
Still, both are hard to refute and people will stand by their claim
sometimes to the bitter end. At least with a myth however the
facts win out more than not…anecdotal?? not so much.
Why Is It So Hard?
Anecdotal is difficult to overcome because it is a belief. Beliefs are
pretty strong for most and changing or realizing a belief is wrong
(or just not completely true) can sometimes hurt a persons pride.
Beliefs are built on a way a person thinks, on how he or she pieces
information together. Shattering that system can be quite personal. Many times the anecdotal has come from a trusted source
such as a friend or relative. So to dismantle the view is a slight on
them. It’s almost always an uphill climb.
Myths, because although never really seen, it’s been repeated
enough that a person may even “swear” they have seen it with
their own eyes. However facts usually win out when presented.
The person still may something like “I could’ve sworn they did
such and such” but they do eventually relent and are often happy
to have these new ‘facts.’
So either way it can be a huge challenge to try and RE-educate
your client about their pest issues but just remember this:
As we grow older, our bodies get shorter and our anecdotes longer.
Robert Quillen

NYC Tries to Drain Rodent ‘Reservoirs’
New York City officials are ramping up efforts to teach
regular New Yorkers how to make their streets, businesses and gardens less hospitable to rodents, NPR reports.
The city has launched its “rat reservoir pilot” — an initiative to try to reduce the rat population in neighborhoods with chronic infestations. Part of the plan is to
hire extra pest management professionals and to seal
up holes in sidewalks, parks and other public infrastructure. Rats can squeeze through the tiniest opening “in doors, in windows, in sidewalk curbs, in any
building infrastructure,” says Caroline Bragdon, a rat
expert with the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. “Rats only need a hole or a gap the size of
a quarter to enter.”
It’s not enough just to poison the rats and collapse
their burrows, Bragdon says. The city still does that,
too. But she says the rats often come back — unless
you can remove the conditions that attracted them in
the first place.
The article noted that another part of the city’s new
initiative is to educate regular New Yorkers on the finer points of rat behavior. It’s a class known as the Rat
Academy, a free, two-hour course on how to make a
business, apartment building or community garden
less attractive to rodents. The city holds Rat Academies
periodically for landlords and anyone else who asks.
Sullivan’s ‘Rats’ Book to Be Turned into a Documentary Film
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dakota Group and Submarine Entertainment, distributors of the documentaries “Blackfish”
and “The Cove,” announced an upcoming feature-length documentary based on Robert Sullivan’s bestseller, “Rats: Observations
on the History and Habitat of the City’s Most Unwanted Inhabitants.” David Koh and Stanley Buchenthal of Dakota Group and
Josh and Dan Braun of Submarine will produce. Sullivan will consult on the film and provide extra information that didn’t make it
into the book.
Dakota Group and Submarine, the company behind the documentaries Blackfish, about the mistreatment of killer whales in
SeaWorld, and The Cove, about dolphin hunting practices in Japan, have chosen their next species to shine some light onto. The
team has bought the rights to the book Rats: Observations on the
History and Habitat of the City’s Most Unwanted Inhabitants by
Robert Sullivan and are developing a feature-length documentary
based on the often hidden world beneath the streets and sidewalks
of New York City.
“We have been obsessed and terrified by rats living in New York
City over the years, and when we read Robert Sullivan’s book, we
30 CPCO Advantage October 2014
couldn’t put it down,” the producers said in a statement. “We look
forward to collaborating with (Sullivan) and bringing his highly
entertaining and scholarly book to the big screen.”
Sullivan will serve as an advisor on the film, with production beginning early next year. In addition to the materials found in the
book, Sullivan will also provide his extensive archive of research
material that didn’t make the final cut. Yup, there are even more
things about dirty street rats that you really didn’t need (or want)
to know.
Orkin Releases New Findings Regarding Pests
in Apartments
A new survey of apartment residents reveals two key findings
about the most common and most feared pests inside apartments: flies are the most common pest cited in apartments and
bed bugs are the most feared.
Most Feared Pest: Bed Bugs
Thirty-nine percent of survey respondents stated they would
least like to see bed bugs in their apartment, followed by rodents, cockroaches, ants and flies.
Most Common Pest: Flies
Eighty-five percent of survey respondents said they have encountered a pest in the past year and flies were the most common, followed by ants, cockroaches and rodents. While flies
may appear harmless, they can, every time they land, leave behind thousands of germs that can cause serious illnesses such
as diarrhea, food poisoning, meningitis and bloodstream infections.
“Many may not be aware that house flies are absolutely filthy – in
fact, twice as filthy as cockroaches. The survey results we released
earlier this summer show that the health threats flies pose are often
underestimated,” says Orkin entomologist and Technical Services
Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. “It’s important that everyone understands the magnitude of these health threats so that they can
help prevent the transmission of dangerous diseases and bacteria.”
Much space was devoted to CPCO’s Tenth Anniversary Convention.
The event was a success and everyone had a great time. There was
a lot of talk about the future (now) and how things would change. In
perfect hindsight, we can debate all of that now.
Heather Gooch wrote about safety issues, including some that we
don’t think about, such as what would you do if you walked into a
robbery? As PCOs we are in a lot of commercial buildings and homes
where things can get ugly fast. Be very aware of your surroundings.
Mike Beckers relayed his feelings about assuming the role of
Executive Vice President of CPCO and reminded us that CPCO is about
you and your business and pledged that CPCO will do its best not to
let us down.
DACS presented an article about the testing conducted in the field
to determine if Borate termite treatments are done correctly. That
means according to the label. The testing protocols were illustrated.
They are still doing the testing now.
PCOs were alerted to the fact that the Green Industries Best
Management Practices (BMPs) were in effect and training was
available through IFAS. Now it is mandatory and fertilizer ID cards
Bed bugs feed only on blood and some people who are bitten experience itchy red welts and swelling. Bed bugs are not
only in bedrooms, but can settle wherever people sleep. They
are great hitchhikers and travel in personal belongings and luggage.
“Bed bugs can reproduce quickly, so it’s important that apartment residents notify property managers of any evidence that
causes them to suspect bed bug activity,” says Paul Rhodes,
National Maintenance and Safety Instructor of NAAEI. “Early
detection is key to help prevent a much larger infestation from
setting in. To help prevent their occurrence, properties can be
active in removing furniture abandoned at onsite trash locations, and ensure that residents are aware of dangers associated
with bringing home ‘found’ items.”
must be carried by anyone who applies it.
Lloyd Smigel wrote about what can happen when we promote a
person to a supervisory position with little or no extra training. What
happens? Loss of morale, hard feelings, failure and lawsuits. Sounds
like a recipe for disaster.
An article form Steve Milloy advanced the theory that living in the
suburbs is bad for your health. It seems the more folks live in the
‘burbs, they breed disease and other problems. It just gets crowded
like the city. (ya think?)
The Government Reporter touched on the theory of Global Warming
(what?) and some proposed Federal laws that never were passed.
Terri stated that her column would be “off on a tangent” (how could
that be) and she tackled some spiritual issues. Also that we wanted
some “Letters to Santa” for the December magazine.
An article from the Boston Globe detailed the importance of good
communication in a disaster situation. Like a Hurricane. They
suggested using text messages when the going gets tough. Like
using Facebook when the roof caves in, I guess.

Lloyd’s Logic
Where Is My Future With Your Company?
Lloyd Merritt
Smigel
One of the recurring questions that I get when I
interview personnel is “What kind of future will I
have here with this company?” It is a valid question.
Ironically, owners of companies doing less than
a million dollars a year (the so-called ‘smaller’
companies) are often bringing me in to help them
with that very same question.
The point is that owners must sometimes swallow
their ego and embrace the courage to invest in their
future and the future of their employees. Invest in
those better employees who have demonstrated a
positive track record and are sincere in trying to
become part of the future of your company’s growth
and profit.
There’s an old saying, “It is better to have a target and
to miss it than not to have a target and to hit it.”
Many of those employees have told me that the boss
keeps his or her distance and doesn’t want input.
(Blessed be those who run around in circles as they
shall qualify as wheels)
What happens is that the ‘mom and pop’ smaller
companies suddenly realize that they can not run
the company the way they used to. What got you to
where you are may not be what will get you to where
you want to go. So it is hard for the owners of these
companies to tell you what your future will be when
they don’t know what their future will be.
When you are smaller you don’t have to have things
like Job Descriptionsl, Misssion Statements, Protocols,
Manuals, annual reviews, etc. As you grow you have
to become more organized and learn to delegate as
well as INVEST back into your company. You no
longer can ‘run by the seat of your pants’ and try to
surround yourself with relatives and friends. OMG!
One of the things I do when I visit small companies
is interview the employees. It is not surprising to find
hard working honest employees that want to help
the company grow. They don’t get asked because the
owner/manager is not sure what to do. My job is to
unite the two sides with objectives. Often, that is not
easy to do.
The point is that there are often good employees
that want to help the company grow and profit and,
if the owner is wise, he or she will, in turn, help that
employee grow and profit along with the company.
Having objectives, goals and time lines along with a
fair compensation packet leaves everyone satisfied.
What happens is that you end up having your
employee leave the “job” and enter into a career
with you. Unfortunately, many owners don’t want
to share or properly compensate others for a variety
of reasons, both valid and invalid. Invalid would be
greed. Valid is because they can not presently afford
it. There are other reasons but this is a short article,
forgive me.
36 CPCO Advantage October 2014
It’s O.K. to seek help and support and it’s O.K. to share
growth and profit.
Expanding and growing your business takes courage
to invest in your own people.
When an employee is wondering “Where is my
future?” with your company you have not shared or
created a vision for them to follow or allowed them
the opportunity to communicate with you.
Time to get moving for your sake and your employee’s
sake.

Most Common Spots Honey Bees Build their Nests
Eaves/ Soffits
The eaves or soffits of a house are a favorite spot for the honey bee. They tend to choose East or Southeast facing
locations and prefer the protection provided by the eave since they are usually isolated from the house and the attic. Bees only need an
1/8 of an inch to get into a cavity. Once they start building their hive, they will continue to fill the cavity until it is full and then move over to
the next accessible cavity or worse, the roof line which then requires a roofer to do the repairs after the bee hive is removed.
Trees
The hollow of trees is another of the Honey Bee’s preferred locations. We often get call from customers saying “I just walked
by the tree in my front yard and it sound like there’s an engine running in my tree”, or “my tree is humming.” Usually if you see a clump
of honey bees hanging from a branch, this is a swarm trying to find a new home and is merely resting for up to 72 hours while the scouts
identify suitable locations- though they will sometimes build right there! On the other hand, bees that live in the hollow of a tree can be a
difficult to eliminate because it is impossible to see which way the cavity goes and whether or not the pesticide being applied is reaching
the majority of the hive. Additionally, the same tree may have other entrances to that hollow, ones that might be further up the tree out of
sight. How to kill bees inside a tree? Their resources must be cut off!!! If they can’t gather pollen, nectar and water they cannot survive!!!
Cinder Blocks and Concrete Blocks
Another location in which we often find Bee Hives is inside the 4” x 4” spaces of these building materials. Bee Hive Removal can be difficult in these spots because often the blocks are overlapping, resulting in the bee hive zigzagging through the caverns of the cinder block. To ensure complete bee hive removal requires a four-point inspection of each block in
which bee activity is discovered.
Behind Siding
Between the aluminum or wooden siding and the drywall is another location from which we often have to remove
bees. We have seen honey bees fill the cavity from ceiling to ground, from stud to stub. As with the eaves, honey bees prefer east and
southeast facing walls and also enjoy the isolation being in between the exterior and interior walls. Customers often call us saying that
their walls have started to buzzzz! Usually by the time bees can be heard from the inside, there is a substantial and well developed hive
already established inside the wall.
Behind Bricks
Most brick structures have spaces in between the bricks, usually at the base, where no grout was applied to allow
ventilation. The honey bee will enter through the slit and begin building their honeycomb in the hollow behind the brick. If there are
vertical studs along the cavity, the bee will fill a cavity and then move over the stud to the next hollow. Once they start building, removing the brick to expose the honeycomb is necessary so it can be properly removed. To avoid destroying any of the bricks during the bee
removal process, experience and precision are required to cut out the grout without compromising the bricks since they can be re-used
to close the cavity after all the honey comb has been extracted. Click here for more pics
Under Sheds
Another favorite home for the honey bee is under the floor of sheds. This usually provides a cool dark spacefor them
to build their home. Since the shed is visited occasionally to grab some tools or pull out the lawnmower, it’s not uncommon for hives to
be there for many months before identified.
