Students Term 2
1 July
Although it has been a busy start to term one , it has been a very successful one for the school. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole school community for your support as I
have taken up the reins of running this wonderful school. I am grateful to our many parents who
have taken the opportunity to work with us as a partner in your child's education, with many
parents now using Connect or assisting the school in supporting the needs of their child. With
you, we have the opportunity to ensure our students are able to perform at their best.
There have been many celebrations that I have been able to celebrate with our students this
term. Firstly we were able to celebrate the new Scholarship Program which has a significant
number of new local businesses making financial contributions to some of our students
education. Being able to recognize students in all year groups will only enhance the learning
opportunities offered to our students. Week six gave me the opportunity to celebrate with
students their academic achievements from 2015. A total of 14 gold, 42 silver and 107 bronze
awards were awarded, congratulations to these students. Finally, I was able to see the wonderful
art and photography work of our students displayed at the KIC Youth Art awards. I can not
commend highly enough the wonderful achievements of our students and support given by our
staff.
This year we introduce the new School Business Plan - Positive futures 2016-2018. The School
Board has commenced discussions on its undertaking and are in the process of aligning
portfolios. I would like to welcome our new members to the School Board and thank those who
are continuing. I would also like to remind parents that they are welcome to attend the School
Board AGM on 9 May commencing at 5pm.
Congratulations to all students and parents for ensuring that our students are well dressed in our
school uniform. The uniform is a symbol of membership to the School’s community. It assists
students to develop a culture of unity and belonging. Wearing the uniform provides students with
the opportunity to develop a sense of pride in their appearance and the school.
Work continues on the Peron Health Trade Training Centre on Farris Street. This
Commonwealth funded project will add many training opportunities for students in the Health
Services area. We look forward to the opportunity of being able to fully utilise this facility in 2017,
however, we hope to be able to introduce our current Nursing students to the building later in the
year. Work has also commenced on the school’s tennis courts and improvements within the
T&E area.
Finally I would like to remind parents that you are welcome to contact the school if you have any
concerns and we welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with you to improve your
students performance at school. Please remember that successful students are those that
attend school.

Hi my name is Ashlea Tunbridge and I
am one of the RSHS 2016 Co-Captains. I
am currently in the second year of my
ATAR studies and wish to pursue teaching
and psychology at University next year.
Being voted Co-Captain by my teachers
and peers is a huge privilege and I hope I
can live up to expectations, trying to keep

our sense of community.
The school would like to welcome and thank the new
Businesses and Community organisations that are
supporting our students. These Include: Scubanautics,
Campion Education, Rotary Club of Palm Beach, Patchara
Surf and Phoenix Insurance Brokers. We look forward to
working with them in the future to support our students.
The school would also like to thank the following
companies for their continuing support of the Scholarship
Program. Fremantle Ports—supporting the Specialist

Science program; CSBP Ltd—supporting our Chemistry
program; RSM—Supporting our Maths Program and
Mineral Resources a major sponsor of the T&E programs
within the school.
Without the ongoing support of these companies our 27
award winners would not have been able to share in over
$10,000 in the support of students.
Ashlea Tunbridge

honoured to be a RSHS Co-Captain for
2016. This year is an exciting opportunity to

of school for students. As a member of
various sport, dance, media and social

relate to the different opinions and problems
of our diverse student body. I hope the year
brings great changes and that everyone will seek me out
for any help needed.

YEAR 9 MARITIME
Its not every day that you get to spend a morning with a group
of young students that are working independently, without
teacher instruction, setting up their own sail boats, wearing
life jackets and remembering the importance of the sun smart
message. I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with
the Year 9 Maritime students who were in the process of
doing their Yachting Australia Discover Sailing Level 2
course.
Students in this Specialist Course come from a variety of
backgrounds with State Sailing Champions, to students with
no boating background, but after watching them carry out the
“Rockingham Ballet” (the name given to the manoeuvre
order taken by the yachts), you realise the level of
engagement these students have with the program and their
instructors. The students responded with speed, to each
instruction that was issued to turn, fully competent in the
manoeuvrability of these sailboats.
The Approved Specialist Maritime Program has been
operating successfully at the school for 25 years. This
academic program also offers students the opportunity to put
their classroom knowledge into practice with such
extracurricular activities as snorkelling, canoeing, sailing,
diving, sea kayaking and power boating. Expectations on
students maintaining high grades and behaviour levels when
commencing the course, ensures that students are able to
demonstrate an aptitude to work and the capacity to learn.
Throughout the years, the community has made many phone
calls to the school, commending us on the Maritime students
behaviour on the Rockingham Foreshore and the Aquatic
Centres. Once again, these students did not let the
program, the school or their parents down. These students
are doing a wonderful job ensuring the local community has a
school we can all be proud to be a part of.
KWINANA INDUSTRIES YOUTH ART

More than 300 students, parents, teachers, parents, local
government and industry representatives attended the

YEAR 7 NAMING CEREMONY
At the beginning of each year, our new Year 7 students
get to select the sub school name that they will carry with
them for the 6 years at Rockingham SHS. The Naming
Program is run through the English Department, where
students work in groups to develop a name, a logo and a
set of values which best represents them as a year
group. The winning name from each class is then
presented to the whole year group and the final name is
selected. This name then becomes a part of
Rockingham SHS history.
We would like to thank the teachers involved in the
process, as well as the Year 7 students who actively
engaged in this important school process. The winning
name was recently presented at the Whole School
Awards Assemblies held on the 9 March. It is with pride
we announce that the winning name for our Year 7 group
is FIDES.
Their identified values are love, hope and belief.
YEAR 7 TRANSITION
In Latin, Fides means trust, faith and belief. The Year 7
sub school believes in trust. They see trust as being
love, hope and belief. The wings signify belief - they believe they can accomplish anything. The fire signifies
hope - they have hope for their successes in the future.
The heart signifies love - love in ourselves, each other
and being strong in our decisions.
Congratulations to Krysta Cats, Trenyce Hirawani-Leef,
Mia Wemm, Skye Currie and Kyah Marriner. Their
artwork will now be developed into their sub school flag,
their academic awards badges and their sub school
scarfs, which can be purchased at the uniform shop and
worn with the school uniform.
The start of 2016 has seen our Year 7 students
commence a new journey into their secondary education.
They have settled well into their new environment with
enthusiasm and energy.
During Week three our Year 7 students went to the
University of Western Australia for “A Positive Transition
To High School” event. It was an action packed day which
hopefully contributed to equipping our students with the
skills, knowledge and inspiration to thrive in high school.
An amazing cast of speakers covered topics including
resilience, authenticity, connection, courage, dreams,
mental health and emotions.
Throughout the term the students have been working with
their Student Coordinator - Mr Wake in the School’s
Buddy program.
Winning Student Art work of the Logo
As well as settling into their academic program, many of
our students are involved in Specialist and Focus
programs within the school. One such group of students
is the Year 7 Rugby League program. This group of
students, under the guidance of Mr Isaac Thomas, are
progressing in their learning and adapting of skills,
including teamwork. We look forward to watching them
develop and continue the success of this program
throughout the year.
AWARDS ASSEMBLY
FRIENDSHIP WEEK
On Wednesday 9 March, our Year 8 - 12 students celebrated
their academic successes from 2015. Due to the number of
students in the school population, the Assemblies were
divided into Middle and Senior School Assemblies which were
held over Period 2 and 3.
Students at Rockingham Senior High School recently
celebrated Friendship Week. The annual event is organised by the Student Services team to encourage all students
to take a stand together against bullying and violence in
school and the wider community.
The academic award badges are presented to students in 3
categories, gold, silver and bronze. Students who achieved a
B grade across their subjects in Semester 2, 2015 received a
bronze badge. Students achieving a mixture of A and B
grades were recognized with a silver award. Those students
who achieved an A grade average were our gold award
winners.
Friendship Games, a sausage sizzle, painting of a banner,
1000 cupcakes provided for students by staff and a school
community clean up were some of the events enjoyed by
staff and students. Years 7 -10 also attended an informative
seminar on cyber-safety. A highlight of the week was the
launch of the Buddy Zone. This area was created to
provide a designated space for Student Services and
Student Leaders to work collaboratively with the school
community.

Congratulations to all of the award winners, for the hard work
and application to striving to achieve your best.
The events were linked to the sixth National Day of Action
against Bullying and Violence which was held on Friday, 18
March 2016.
This week has been a celebration of the amazing staff and
students that we have at Rockingham Senior High School. It
was fantastic to see teachers versing students in games,
and senior school students mentoring lower school students. There is an enhanced sense of friendship and community in the school because of Friendship Week. A huge
thank you to everyone who participated, to Student Services
for organising all the events and activities this week, and the
student council for their help at recess and lunch . LEARNING AREA IN FOCUS DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
The Design and Technology Department have made a great
start to the year and are praising the great efforts students are
giving to the subjects of Metalwork, woodwork and Design
drawing.
The commitment by the teachers in this area is 100% and we
are thankful of the wonderful work Mr Lauritsen (Senior and
Junior), Miss Vaughan and Mr Adams are making.
Mr Adams has joined us from North of the river and brings a
wealth of knowledge and expertise to Design and Technology
with decades of teaching under his belt.
PRINCIPAL VISITS TO LOCAL AREA
PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Mr Koios has recently had the opportunity to meet with
the local area Year 6 Primary School Students. He was
joined by the Year 7 & 8 HOSS Ms Smith as part of our
transition program for students into High School. Many
students and parents in the Primary Schools are unaware
of the programs run by the high school or the Specialist
Program opportunities available to them. This was a
wonderful opportunity for Mr Koios to introduce himself as
the new Principal and engage with our local community.
It also enabled our Year 6 students to learn about the
school prior to the transition program that will be held in
the school later in the year.
Miss Vaughan has made RSHS her work place even though
offers from other schools were in abundance last year. Her
current workload has continued on from last year where she
worked most of the holidays developing her skills and
knowledge in Design and Technology through the Switch
Program. This year Miss Vaughan is completing a course on
advanced metalwork skills through TAFE and the flow on to
her students in this area is obvious already.
Students in Years 7 to 10 are well into the basics of their
courses and are achieving good results. Our Senior School
students are completing the components of design that are
new to the curriculum for the Design and Technology area.
These projects once designed will be made and can be taken
home at the finish of the semester.
The Design and Technology area is currently under
renovation, with new welding bays being installed and
windows between classrooms, new machines for woodwork
that will lift the area to current industry standards. Our
technical drawing facilities will be further developed using
CAD technology and a new laser cutter. This has placed our
school in the enviable position of being one of the best
resourced in the state. We are looking forward to seeing the
continued increase in quality and standard of the student work
in metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing.

POINT PERON COASTAL MUSEUM
School Captains, Ashlea Tunbridge and Heather
Edmonds recently represented the school at a community
event hosted by the Hon Phil Edman MLC and the
Mayors of both Rockingham and Kwinana.
At this evening 8 School Captains from the local schools
were able to view a video documentary of local retired
service personnel being interviewed. The last surviving
digger who witnessed the bombing of Darwin shared
many anecdotes. He served on the anti-aircraft guns in
Darwin, as well as time served on the search lights along
the coast from Rockingham to Cottesloe.
Students were also able to meet and speak with Ms
Ronnie Roach, who is part of the documentary and is
aged 96. Our captains were able to gain a significant
insight into the involvement that Point Peron had during
the war.
2016 School Captains Ashlea Tunbridge and Heather Edmonds
SPECIALIST BASKETBALL AND
NETBALL PROGRAMS
The Specialist Netball and Basketball programs have
been training very hard this term in preparation for some
very busy schedule in terms two and three.
Our Specialist Basketball teams have been training under
the watchful eye of their new teacher Mr Steve Watson
who joins us with a wealth of experience, in both teaching
and basketball.
Good luck to both groups in their games.
STUDENT ENROLMENT 2017
Enrolments for Year 7 2017, Approved Specialist
Maritime, Netball and Basketball Programs, and the
School Focus ACE and Rugby League Programs, are
currently being accepted until the 6 May 2016. Trials in
the form of interviews, skills testing and/or aptitude
testing will occur in term two . Only students that have
registered their interest for these programs will be invited
to participate in the trials.
Applications for enrolment are available on the school
website, at the front office or can be posted out to you. If
you require any further information regarding
these programs or enrolment into the school, please
contact us on 9527 0300.
KIC IWOMEN PROJECT
Year 7 Specialist Netball
Congratulations to Jasmine Hewat-Lawrence, Year 10,
who won one of the 2 KIC Leeuwin Scholarships that was
announced at iWomen Graduation on the 31 March
2015. Jasmine was very deserving of her award, and
sets sail in June.
SCHOOL WEBSITE
Term two should see the launch of the schools new
website. We have been working to try to ensure that this
site is parent friendly and easy to use. We would love
feedback from parents of their experience so we can
continue to improve.
Along with the website, we will
open the official Rockingham Senior High School
Facebook page so we can keep you up to date on what is
happening within the school on daily basis.
Rockingham Senior High School is proud to be working in partnership
with local business and industry to improve educational opportunities for
students
