ERA Kline & May Realty Leadership Program Summary Introduction The Community Leadership Program, offered by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, has traditionally been an avenue for the development of tomorrow’s community leaders. This is a way for a new employee, or one who is moving up the company ladder, to make valuable contacts while building lifelong relationships with other businesspeople in the community. Investing in this networking and training program is a wonderful retention tool and shows your commitment to your employer’s future. Objectives Objectives of the Leadership Program include: » Introducing participants to other emerging and current leaders » Building strong business and personal networks » Skills training in communications, leadership/management style and team work » Fostering an awareness of community issues » Hands-on volunteerism 2007-2008 Participants Pictured, from left to right First Row: Andrée Gitchell, Tabby Diehl, Sue Custer, Paul Helmuth Second Row: Stan Jones, Mille Tirado, Laura Reedy Wolfe, Ann Marie Freeman, Diana Stultz, Sarah Sunde, Lori Robertson Third Row: Carolyn Nesselrodt, Eva Ferrell, Donna Hahn, Brenda Black, Don Plank, Philip Rhodes, Linda Elliott, Seth Lind, Linda Breeden, Jerrica Long Fourth Row: Lori Stroop, Meghan Prillaman, John Cale, Ron Ramsey, Wanda Rittenhouse, Meghan Painter Not Pictured: Sherry King Session I Welcome Session 1: Welcome September 13, 2007 The opening session of the 2007-2008 Chamber Leadership Program was held at the Massanutten Regional Library in downtown Harrisonburg. The session focused on group introductions, an ice breaker networking game to get to know one another, and was punctuated with inspirational comments defining leadership by Dick Morin, Chamber Ambassador, and Letitia Bates, one of last year’s CLP participants and current committee member. In addition, there were introductions to the program sessions and projects for our groups. The featured speaker was Gregory Justice from the Department of Theatre Arts at Virginia Tech. Greg captivated us by discussing how business professionals could benefit from the art of theater. He shared techniques for enhancing business presentations as an actor would enhance his stage performance by projecting positive energy. His presentation was inspiring and made us look forward to future sessions. Chick-fil-A provided a great lunch for ending our session. Session II Camp Horizons Session II: Camp Horizons September 27, 2007 Camp Horizons hosted the second session designed to acquaint group participants with each other and our respective businesses. After chicken tossing to help us remember the names of fellow participants, we attempted utilizing our skills with hula hoops, tower building, and various other activities including crossing land mines and untwisting human knots. The activities were all fun and challenged us to work as a team to accomplish the task at hand. Kim Betts did an outstanding job leading our morning “games.” Camp Horizons focuses on both summer camping experiences for children and corporate team building throughout the year. After a morning of outside activity, we enjoyed a lovely lunch provided by the camp. Enjoyable conversations could be heard inside the facility now that participants were more familiar with each other. The day ended with a few of our more adventurous members taking advantage of the invitation to stay and experience the ropes course. Session III Crime in Our Community Session III: Crime in Our Community October 11, 2007 This session gave our group the opportunity to explore crime in our community. Although Harrisonburg was recently named the second safest small city in America by Farmers Insurance Company, our participants listened intently as law enforcement officers explained the issues this area faces and how these problems are being handled. RUSH Task Force and the Regional Narcotics Task Force gave us an overview of the prevalence of drugs in this area along with the reasons Harrisonburg is attractive to such activity. RUSH is focused on identifying, targeting, investigating and prosecuting individuals and organizations that distribute or manufacture narcotics in our community. During the presentation, we watched a trained K9 search the room and find a package containing drugs planted earlier in the morning. After the information on RUSH, the CHARGE Task Force enlightened us on the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County gang activities. During this part of the presentation, we were educated on gang signs, symbols and colors. Unfortunately, this huge national problem is present in our area schools and jail. The Emergency Operations Center downtown was our venue for this session. We toured the facility and watched as 911 dispatchers handled various calls. After the session, participants enjoyed lunch at Dave’s Taverna. Session Education IV Session IV: Education November 8, 2007 The Education Session was held in JMU’s Memorial Hall, formerly Harrisonburg High School. Round table discussions were led by educational leaders in the community, including Dr. James Perkins, President of Blue Ridge Community College; Dr. Carol Scheppard, Vice President and Dean of Bridgewater College; Dr. Beryl Brubaker, Provost of Eastern Mennonite University; Ms. Donna Harper, Office of the President, James Madison University; Dr. Donald Ford, Superintendent of Harrisonburg City Schools; and Dr. Carol Fenn, Superintendent of Rockingham County Schools. This impressive panel shared some of the challenges and opportunities of their respective schools as well as future goals and growth. We discussed the diversity challenges of our local schools both economically and educationally. The superintendents discussed how Federal programs such as No Child Left Behind put school systems at a disadvantage. JMU’s growth was also a topic of interest. Ms. Harper shed light on the planning and management of the issue as well as the impact the growth will have on the community. The session ended with a lunch provided by JMU Catering. Participants were then invited to the Science on a Sphere demonstration. We learned that JMU is the only non-museum facility with this exhibit. We saw the effects of Global Warming on the sphere with some 500 other programs available. What a treat! Session V Health & Wellness Session V: Health and Wellness December 13, 2007 This session on Health and Wellness was hosted by the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Center. Melissa Fortner and Judith Trumbo brought in guest speakers to discuss a variety of issues, including Health Care topics presented in a panel format. The panel included Eugene Diener with LD&B Insurance, David Cockley with JMU, our own Andree Gitchell with RMH and Rich Sider, the new director with the Rockingham Free Clinic. Topics included insurance and benefits trends, business and economic impact and the impact of healthcare expense, with emphasis on demands in our own community and the special concerns here. The underlying answer to begin solving the healthcare crisis in America must be personal responsibility. After a short break, we heard from Dick Harper, Gerry Lehman and Cindy Ferek from the Rockingham Public Schools. They discussed the issues of childhood obesity and the wellness plan for the schools and also Cindy’s exciting project at TA for incorporating a fitness agenda into the Driver Education program. It was not only insightful but had far reaching attributes for the community. This program was entered into a national competition for incorporating wellness in our schools. Ben Burks, VMRC Vice President of Life Enrichment, addressed the group on taking a Holistic Vision toward wellness. Heather Yoder of VMRC then demonstrated some stretches and exercises that could be done at a desk by almost anyone. The last speaker of the day was Dave Grembi of Rockingham Memorial Hospital regarding the new Open Heart Surgery center. Mr. Grembi mentioned the additional personnel coming on board to make this program state of the art. RMH is also developing special relationships with other hospitals to make this program a reality sooner with the completion of the new hospital. The day ended with a delicious and healthy salad and sandwich buffet catered by VMRC. 10 Session Diversity VI Session VI: Diversity January 10, 2008 Our new year began with a program at JMU’s Festival Center. After a brief period for coffee and chatter, we were introduced to Brent Finnegan, the filmmaker of a WVPT documentary on the plight of the Hispanic population’s migration into our area. The film was moving and gave us new insight on the reasons behind the rise in the immigrant society in our locality. Following the film, we engaged a panel of experts in the issues associated with the Hispanic population in the Valley. Laura Zarrugh of JMU, Sam Nickels, an advocate for the immigrants, Finnegan, and Aaron Cook, a local attorney dealing with the special problems associated with the immigration in our area, addressed the impact of the surge in the Hispanic community over the last 10 years. The problems with Federal immigration laws and enforcement seem pervasive in our community and the costs associated with assimilation are issues to local taxpayers. The labor needs of our community seem to attract the Hispanics, but the issues with healthcare, education and legalities create an enormous monetary impact. The education we received as a result of this question and answer panel will help us better understand the issues on both sides and develop solutions. The incredible lunch buffet of Central American cuisine was a treat. We believe that food brings us closer together. 11 Session EnvironmentVII Session VII: Environment February 14, 2008 February brought us a program on new development in our community. Meeting at the Massanetta Springs Conference Center, we boarded a school bus and ventured out to see first hand what is going on in the eastern part of Rockingham County. Escorted by Stephen King, the assistant county supervisor, we toured the new Cub Run Elementary School adjacent to Montevideo Middle School, the new RMH site and various new residential developments including Crossroad Farms, Preston Lake and The Glen. We discussed the impact on the county of these developments and issues associated with the approval of these new projects. Infrastructure is the critical element to approving any plan. Smart growth is key and just because a development sounds innovative and good for the area, transportation, education and implementation are all factors to be considered in the approval process. Upon our return to Massanetta Springs, we enjoyed a nice soup, salad and sandwich bar and got to know one another better. 12 Session VIII Government Session VIII: Government March 13, 2008 From the moment Jim Gilchrist got the session started in the new city council chambers, we were filled with information about the operation of our government. The first speaker was Kurt Hodgen, Harrisonburg City Manager, who gave us an overview of the local offices. He was followed by Joe Paxton, his counterpart in the county. The difference in local government operations between the city and county is significant. Wayne Harper, our former clerk of the court, informed us about our court system operation and jury selection. The last speaker was Dr. Robert Roberts, professor of political science at JMU, whose insight was interesting regarding the role of all local governments in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our state is unique in its organization and management substantiated by its grade (A-) compared with other states. It made us proud to be Virginian! The morning’s session was packed with information and as a result, we are all better informed about the role of our governments from local to Federal. We enjoyed a delicious lunch in the Municipal building afterwards. 13 Session The Arts IX Session IX: The Arts April 10, 2008 Our session on the Arts at Court Square Theater began with a beautiful production from the Rockingham Ballet Company. What a way to start our day! We then heard poetry from three JMU students who both impressed and inspired us with their work. Eddie Bumbaugh then addressed our group regarding Downtown Renaissance and some of the projects slated in the near future. It was exciting to hear more about housing opportunities on the drawing board and plans for future development. Our participants then broke into two groups and walked throughout the downtown area, making stops at the Oasis and Franklin St. Galleries as well as the Children’s Museum and the Hardesty Higgins House where the Harrisonburg Tourism offices are located. It was an incredibly gorgeous day for a walking tour and seeing first hand what our downtown area really has to offer. We ended our session with lunch at Dave’s Taverna. 14 Session Graduation X May 8 May 8, 2008 As the Spotswood Country Club hosts our graduation ceremony, we will hear a brief summary of all sessions and reflect on the past eight months. Our guest speaker, Cheryl Tally, Ph.D., from James Madison University, will offer words of advice and encouragement immediately preceding the presentation of our certificates. This ceremony will be an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the lessons learned, the friendships created, and the knowledge imparted during the Chamber Community Leadership Program. It will also serve as a reminder of the initiative that we all must take in utilizing our talents, techniques and leadership skills to strengthen the character, structure, integrity and overall quality of our community. Congratulations to the Graduates of the 2007-2008 Chamber Community Leadership Program! 15 Participant Profiles Brenda Black Tourism Manager, Harrisonburg Tourism 540-432-8940 [email protected] Born in Trenton, NJ / In area for 11 years Graduate of Mercer County Community College and ATI Career Institute, where I received my certification in Hospitality and Tourism Community Activities: Recreation and Travel Soccer Professional Experience: I was born into the Hospitality Industry.
