ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 Our Mission TMS delivers a seamless, internationally-acclaimed educational experience designed to inspire and challenge students to discover the best of who they are and to achieve their full potential. Our Vision To be embraced as an outstanding school with an unparalleled educational experience. Our Promise TMS enables each student to define and realize success in university, career and in life through our unparalleled educational experience. A MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS OF THE TMS BOARD OF TRUSTEES To the Members of the TMS School Community, As we open the 2014-2015 school year, we are both humbled and honoured to succeed Michael N. Durisin as co-chairs of the TMS Board of Trustees, as is Greg Kanargelidis who succeeded Elaine Flett as Secretary. Despite new leadership, the mission of the Board remains exactly the same: To ensure that the leadership, faculty and staff of TMS have the resources to execute on their Vision to deliver an unparalleled educational experience to our students. To this end, we began the development of a 20-year plan for the School with a focus on remaining a relevant and leading educational institution in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for generations to come. The greatest example of this is in our College Program that was conceived, funded and implemented over the last 10 years. We are proud to celebrate that this school year is our first with two full homeroom classes of students in each grade from 7 through 12. This growth results in enhanced social experiences for our students and increases the number of opportunities for students to participate in a broader range of activities. To support and inspire our growing student body at the Elgin Mills Campus, we proudly opened Phase 2 of the Elgin Mills Campus in September 2013. This expansion provided new classroom spaces, two Science Labs, a Drama Studio, a University Counselling and Learning Strategies Centre for students, and additional faculty workspace. Our Toddler, Children’s House and Elementary students benefited from significant improvements to our Bayview Campus, including a new Main Entrance and Office that provides improved security and presence, a vastly improved Meeting Room, a new upgraded Art Studio, a new French Centre for language instruction and new Music Practice Rooms. On the programming side, we continued to enhance the instructional program for our students with the creation of a new school-wide Technology Integration Leader position and additional support for our counselling and university guidance support team. The quality of the education TMS delivers begins with dedicated, experienced and vibrant faculty and staff. To this end, the School remains committed to being a preferred employer, helping to ensure the School has the resources necessary to continue to recruit, develop and retain outstanding faculty and staff. Having great faculty and staff is essential as we “go beyond” for our students and their families. On behalf of the TMS Board of Trustees, we would like to thank all the members of the TMS Community for their ongoing efforts to do their best for our students. We are very grateful that so many of you continue to help ensure every TMS student will be enabled to achieve success in university, career and life as they work to reach their full potential. Kevin Talbot TMS School Co-Chair Phil Campione TMS School Co-Chair 1 MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL To the Members of the TMS School Community, In the 2013-2014 school year, TMS continued to be highly successful in guiding each student from the age of 18 months to 18 years to “go beyond” in Academics, Arts, Athletics and Citizenship. Faculty, staff and parents worked well together to engage each student in making the most of the year in terms of learning, enjoyment and educational progress. Recognizing that a highly effective education develops over many years, our efforts included the ongoing development of a rock-solid, age-appropriate foundation for lifelong learning in Toddler and Children’s House classes. The powerful impact on students at these levels was readily apparent in the confidence and enthusiasm they demonstrated in class and at home each day. As an external measure of our success with regard to skill development, our third year Children’s House students achieved a class average at the 87th percentile on the Canadian Achievement Tests (CAT), providing additional confirmation that students at this level are developing an exceptional foundation in areas such as reading, writing and computation. Elementary students (grades 1 to 6) were equally highly engaged in developing their skills in all areas, working in an inspired manner to find answers to the many questions they have about their world. As part of this effort, students were supported in the ongoing development of superior skills in reading, vocabulary, writing conventions, spelling, math facts, computation basic skills and knowledge. The success of the TMS approach was readily apparent and confirmed externally by our Elementary students’ results in the Canadian Achievement Tests (CAT). The overall average of our grade 1 to 6 students was very strong at the 92nd percentile. This means that the average TMS Elementary student’s results exceed the result expected for 92% of the students at this level in Canada. We note that our Elementary Program’s focus goes beyond simply the development of basic skills. It leads students to develop higher level thinking abilities in the areas of research, evaluation, synthesis and problem solving. As a result, TMS students are on track to be more than well-prepared to investigate, understand and solve complex real world situations. Most importantly, our TMS Program engages students in the ongoing development of character and citizenship traits that encourage them to treat everyone with respect and compassion. We are so proud that our students are keen to make many positive differences in the world. 2 The College students (grades 7 to 12) were highly engaged in the further development of higher level academic skills within our uniquely designed and delivered International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). The TMS Advantage to the IB Programme ensures that every student is successful and enjoys their day-to-day experiences. The most outstanding factor about the Elgin Mills Campus students is that they are happily engaged, supportive of each other and participate with great energy and excitement in a wide range of academic, athletic, artistic and citizenship activities. This high level of engagement and enjoyment continues to be strong proof that the unique TMS design and delivery of the IB Programme ensures that our students can meet the challenges inherent in the IB Programme and really enjoy the positive, inspiring and rewarding experience. We proudly celebrated the graduation of our largest class of grade 12 students in June 2014. Our 16 graduates continued a five year tradition of earning multiple university acceptances as highly sought after candidates by many post-secondary institutions. Their results speak for themselves: • Admission to 76 different university programs •Earning: • $216,000 in scholarships • The equivalent of 32 university credits •A class average higher than the IB world average in 14 of the 19 courses we offer Arts at TMS TMS School delivers an engaging and rewarding Arts Program across the two campuses. We successfully engage students in learning many lessons and skills as they enjoy being involved in Visual Art, Music and Drama. As a result, the degree of enthusiasm TMS students have for sharing their talents and their work is truly outstanding. The students always prove that they are proud of their efforts and truly love to produce and perform. We are thankful to the many faculty members who work to engage and inspire Bayview Campus students in artistic endeavours. Some of the many highlights include: •3rd year Children’s House students’ class presentation of the musical, The Little Engine That Could Sing at the Parent Open Houses in May and June •Lower Elementary students putting on a really great show at their Winter Concert and breathing a great deal of life into the musical, It’s a Kid’s Life, for the May performance •Upper Elementary students showing great enthusiasm and skill development in instrumental performances at their Winter Concert and a marked amount of growth in the May Music Sharing events Outside of classes, the Lower Elementary Choir grew to more than 100 participants who performed at most of the full school events throughout the year. We were very pleased that the Bayview Campus Band took part in the Music Alive Festival and won Gold. Upper Elementary students received an award for the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) Winter Classic Breezin Thru Theory Contest earning the highest score in the Rhythm Rocks section. It was also fantastic to see Upper Elementary Choir and Elgin Mills Campus Band students joining students from over 40 other CIS schools as part of the CIS Music Festival (CISMF) at Roy Thomson Hall in the spring. 3 Student inspiration and engagement in the arts also continued to shine at the Elgin Mills Campus. Some of the highlights include: •Grade 9 Drama students enhanced the Terry Fox Assembly and Grade 10 Drama students added greatly to the Remembrance Day Ceremony with great presentations •The College presentation of the Canadian premiere of the play, The Good Fight, was one of the highlights of the year’s student performances with the author participating via Skype •The Elgin Mills Campus Winter Concert, which was an energetic and skillful combination of student performances, included the show-stealing African drumming We thank our Annual Giving Donors for allowing us to enhance Elgin Mills Campus performances with our new bleachers and new theatre lighting. This equipment helped inspire our College student body to rise to the opportunity and deliver outstanding performances from a wide array of student groups including the Bollywood Dancers and the Strummers Club. Visual Arts highlights at the Elgin Mills Campus included: •A grade 8 and Rogers TV partnership in which students experienced many aspects of TV news production •A grade 9 and Ryerson University partnership where students developed and displayed their own Infographics In addition, photography grew as an area of interest for TMS students with our first Annual TMS Student Photo Exhibition. This provided great viewing at the Annual TMS Parent Luncheon and the Bayview Campus Main Entrance, serving to be a great addition to our fundraising initiatives and campus aesthetics. One of the students who organized this exhibition earned a Richmond Hill Library Arts Contest award in the photography category. In addition, a number of TMS students also had their work selected from TMS to be in the PhotoSensitive CIS Beauty Photography Exhibition. Physical Education and Athletics As part of engaging the whole child, the strong TMS Physical Education and Athletics Program inspired students at both campuses. Students were highly engaged and enjoyed learning many lessons about perseverance, teamwork and sportsmanship. The School continued to guide and form the foundation for our students to lead healthy and active lifestyles. We are thankful to the many members of the faculty at both campuses who adeptly filled the important role of coach in a variety of areas. At the Bayview Campus, a recess games unit encouraged students to play more and be healthier. Bowling and curling units were introduced to engage students further. Approximately 115 students eagerly participated in 8 different team sports and 5 individual sports. For the first time, grade 2 students were included in tryouts for the track and field team. Over 90 grade1 to 2 students and 50 grade 3 to 6 students improved their skills and their health in regular house league activities. Congratulations to our Bayview Campus athletes who won 4 banners last year, tying a TMS Bayview Campus best. Banner sports included: U12 Indoor Soccer, U12 Coed Basketball, Elementary Track and Field and U12 Badminton. 4 Support for sports teams at the Elgin Mills Campus continued to be very strong with nearly 75% of the College student body participating on a TMS team or in an individual sport. Inspired to be active and involved, over 85% of the Elgin Mills Campus students participated in Intramurals. It is noteworthy that TMS earned the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association of Ontario Banner (CIRA-ONT) for recognition of an outstanding Intramural Program. Inviting opportunities to go beyond, have fun, be healthy and be a great sport were abundant with over 27 sports teams and 6 individual sports being offered at the Elgin Mills Campus. Coaches were proud of all their athletes for their hard work and support for each other. It was exciting to see TMS teams earn a total of 9 banners this year, winning SSAF Championships in U16 Girls Track and Field, U16 Boys Track and Field, U16 Boys Cross Country, U20 Boys Cross Country, U20 Boys Volleyball, U20 Coed Softball, U20 Curling, U20 Badminton and U20 Coed Ultimate Frisbee. Citizenship The foundation of the TMS educational experience is based on assisting students to be committed to making many positive differences in the world. We were delighted to see TMS students working to make the School even better by endeavouring to live the TMS Ideals: Respect, Strive and Make Good Choices. As part of this, TMS students really did go beyond to Just Be Nice! Our students extended their efforts beyond the walls of the School in many ways, including: the Terry Fox Walkathon and Run, Toy Mountain and the Dominican Republic Service Trip. TMS was greatly enhanced by parents who volunteered and donated in many ways. We thank our supporters and are very grateful for our 200-plus volunteers for giving freely of their time, energy and expertise in many areas. As a not-for-profit school, TMS relies on donations from Annual Giving as a tax-effective way for parents to assist in enhancing student learning on an annual basis. We thank our donors for giving $61,332.00 to our Annual Giving Program. This exceeds the $37,550.00 from the previous year. It is wonderful to report 100% participation from the TMS Board and Leadership Team. We are extremely proud to note that 86 faculty and staff members supported the program. The fact that so many faculty and staff members, after going beyond in their jobs on a daily basis, also participated in Annual Giving speaks volumes about their commitment to TMS. The outstanding work of many volunteers and donors resulted in 235 guests assisting us to net $26,000.00 at the Annual TMS Parent Luncheon in support of Learning for Life. Overall, students, faculty and staff, are all very grateful to our volunteers and donors for their support and look forward to continuing to develop the culture of giving that makes independent schools so strong. The high level of TMS student happiness and achievement is a direct reflection of our great faculty and staff team. In 2013 - 2014, we continued our efforts to be a preferred employer. We were successful in our goal to attract, retain and develop an outstanding team that is expert and committed to being unparalleled in their work with students, parents and each other. TMS faculty and staff embraced many opportunities to go beyond and develop the program in a seamless fashion. They also actively engaged in professional development opportunities in and out of the School. We were pleased that greater than 95% of the respondents to our TMS Faculty and Staff Survey indicated that we met or exceeded their expectations with regard to overall satisfaction with the School. As Head, it is a privilege to applaud and recognize the efforts of our students in the past year and look forward to their continued efforts to go beyond in all areas. It is also a privilege to thank parents, faculty, staff and alumni for going beyond for TMS students and the School in so many ways on a regular basis and making TMS a great place to learn. Each year the Board reviews and approves management’s operating and capital plans for the coming year within a strategy that considers the long-term stability of TMS. The Finance Committee is responsible for approving the fiscal budgets and ensuring appropriate reporting, auditing, and systems are implemented and executed. This Committee also recommends objectives that secure the long-term financial stability of TMS. The operating plan projects the necessary revenues to cover expenses and secure the growth and quality of the programs at TMS. Tuition fees are set from this plan, allowing TMS to be run in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner. Year after year, benchmarking against comparable schools shows that TMS has kept operating costs under control while providing a top quality educational experience. As a notfor-profit organization, any year end surplus or deficit remains with TMS. The capital budget projects the necessary capital expenditures required for current and future years, to be funded from fundraising activities and other sources. TMS’s capital planning has allowed for progress to be made in several areas, as described below. Operating results in 2013-2014 were very positive, due to growing College student enrolment and careful cost control. TMS was able to introduce a second grade 11 class at the Elgin Mills Campus, and opened Phase 2 of the Elgin Mills Campus on schedule in September to handle the growth of enrolment. This new addition included new Science Labs, a Drama Studio and new classrooms. Significant renovations were also completed at the Bayview Campus, with the addition of a handicapped entrance and washroom, a new Meeting Room, a more welcoming refurbished Reception area, a new staff room, and additional offices. Funding came from donations and TMS reserves. Further work was done at the Bayview Campus in the summer of 2014, including a new Art Studio, refurbished French classrooms with enhanced technology, new Music Practice Rooms, and extensive re-roofing. This ongoing capital investment ensures both campuses are maintained at a high level of quality. Annual Giving is an important program for supporting overall revenue in a tax effective manner, and has allowed TMS to provide otherwise unattainable “extras” to all the academic programs. Annual Giving showed positive growth in 2013-2014 with over $53,000 raised by June 30, exceeding the budget by 6%. There was good participation by parents, as well as 100% participation by Board members and contributions from 86 staff members. The School expects Annual Giving to grow in future years. Land at 93 Edward Avenue, immediately north of the Elgin Mills Campus, was purchased in October 2013. This will give TMS new opportunities for future development and growth. The development of this site will depend on substantial capital fundraising support from the TMS Community. Overall, 2013-2014 was a successful financial year, in which TMS provided a top quality educational experience while moving forward in enhancing its facilities, repaying debt, and building a strong foundation for the future.
