Dear friends,
Fiscal year 2013 was an energetic year! Our diverse
volunteer base and TheDCH staff were amazing, investing
huge amounts of energy in programs and future plans. We
are so proud of how our volunteers support every program
and governance area.
Trees, Public Landscapes, Urban Agriculture and Education
program areas all achieved significant successes which
helped strengthen our local communities and physical
environment. We hope you will be inspired by reading about
our accomplishments in these pages.
Tremendous energy also went into planning our building
renovation and expansion and reactivating the capital
campaign. We have very exciting plans and big dreams
which we plan to roll out soon.
Many, many thanks to those who contributed to the TheDCH
through a myriad of ways. On behalf of our Board and
TheDCH staff, we thank you for your energy and significant
and important financial support!
We look forward to a very productive year in 2014! Come
join us.
Gratefully,

URBAN
AGRICULTURE
Community gardens make fresh food available and affordable
where it is scarce, and promote neighborhood pride, safety and cooperation
by transforming vacant lots into productive green spaces.

stormwater runoff
Procuring fresh, healthy food is the
challenge of the “food insecure,”
people who live in food deserts where
highly processed and fast foods are
readily available and healthy options
are scarce.
It’s no wonder they have more than
triple the obesity and diabetes rates
of other Delawareans. There are a
lot of factors contributing to dietrelated disease, but one thing is sure:
if people don’t have reasonable access
to healthy food, they can’t eat it.
TheDCH Urban Agriculture program
exists to do something about the
problem. We have helped scores of
neighborhoods build and maintain
dozens of community gardens. And
at our flagship project, the 12th
& Brandywine Urban Farm, staff
produces, markets, and affordably
sells 1,300 pounds of produce each
growing season in a foodshed that
badly needs it.
3
TREE
PROGRAM
The Tree Program aims to increase the tree canopy and educate people
about the environmental, fiscal and community benefits of trees.
✓Done this year
609 Trees Planted
21
Tree Stewards trained to
advocate for trees in their
neighborhoods
cared for (inspected,
800 Trees
watered, pruned, removed)
Trees are great for the environment: 100 mature
trees annually clean 5 tons of CO2, and 1,700
pounds of pollutants, ozone, and particulates
that cause acid rain. They also cool urban heat
islands by up to 20 degrees and provide wildlife
habitat and beautify neighborhoods. At TheDCH
we educate people about the benefits of trees,
train citizen advocates, support initiatives and
care for trees.
This year, we accomplished these goals in
numerous ways. We held workshops for the
public and held a semi-annual bare root tree
sale. Through public, community and corporate
partnerships, we orchestrated tree plantings in
places like Graylyn Crest, Delcastle High School,
New Destiny Fellowship, Elks on the Brandywine,
The New Moyer Academy, and neighborhoods in
Wilmington’s West Side. We also continued a great
partnership with Delmarva Power for the third
time to offer a Low Cost Trees for Energy Savings
program, this time in Townsend.
4
We are always looking for new ways to connect
people to trees, and this year, we partnered with
the Delaware Grief Consortium to launch “Love
Grows On,” a tribute program that helps those
grieving to find a positive way to remember their
loved one and benefit our communities.
PUBLIC
LANDSCAPES
TheDCH has enhanced more than 100 public green spaces in
Delaware. These attractive municipal gateways and focal points use
native plants, and sustainable practices to improve water and air
quality and reduce stormwater runoff.
✓Done this year
4
40
Stormwater mitigation projects completed
Public landscapes maintained
Public Landscapes exists to beautify shared
spaces, implement best practices for
sustainability and stormwater management,
and educate the public about the benefits of
sustainable landscaping. We partner with
communities, agencies and businesses, and
bring our expertise to bear in challenging
urban grow zones, like traffic islands and urban
neighborhood sidewalk spaces.
This year, we facilitated the installation at the
Brandywine Substation in Brandywine Village,
supported beautification of Hill Road, Brandywine
Zoo, Columbus Monument, McCaulley Court, and
a major project at Rodney Square that utilized
state-of-the-art infrastructure to support tree
root growth in that high-traffic area. Outside
Wilmington, we continued progress on the
US 40/13 Corridor landscape project and
coordinated design and volunteer installation of
wildlife habitat at Ashland Research Station.
Education is an important part of communities
adopting best practices in stormwater
management, and to that end, we completed
an installation of a model tree trench on Locust
Street along Prices Run Park and are working on
interpretive signage that describes what’s going
on underground in that space to improve water
quality and reduce runoff.

YOUTH & ADULT
EDUCATION
Offering great events and trips for gardening enthusiasts, and inspiring
appreciation for the environment among underserved populations.
✓Done this year
workshops, classes,
62 Adult
lectures, tours & outings
trained the Horticulture
24 Teens
Leadership Education Program
(HELP), a two-week intensive
outdoor classroom experience
kids educated in the
151 City
Secret Garden preschool
program, farm field trips, and
other events
At TheDCH, we educate children, youth
and adults – in arenas as close to home
as TheDCH Demonstration Garden
and as far afield as other states and
countries.
In addition to our slate of adult
workshops, Make & Take events,
Winter Lecture Series, Lunch & Learn
series, City Gardens Contest and
numerous local garden tours, this
year, we took guests on a memorable
excursion to enjoy Buffalo Garden
Walk, the nation’s largest city garden
tour.
6
This year, thanks to private donors,
we also renovated the Secret Garden
– an outdoor classroom serving urban
preschoolers. We continued to inspire
youth and young adults with summer
programs like Horticulture Education
Leadership Program and Wilmington’s
Green Jobs summer training. We took
kids on field trips to a local farm and
offered numerous Family Fun events.
