In saying that, the board has decided to conduct a review of the organisation in 2014 to maximise the return to the members. The guidelines include a review of the staffing structure and the cost effectiveness of programmes. I have been personally involved in developing a relationship with the Asian community and particularly the Chinese table tennis community in China. I have been successful with a sponsorship deal worth $100,000.00 for tables and equipment for TTA and spent time in China getting to know many of the administrators running Chinese table tennis in the city’s and provinces. The board made the decision last year to involve the Asian community and it is proved a very important and strategic move as TTA now has sponsorship from local Chinese business and mainland Chinese business people and is paving the way forward by improving the landscape of table tennis in Australia. The events in Australia continue to be a challenge with some doing very well and others struggling to be successful. While TTA needs to ensure the events are successful it is also important to attempt to keep a high standard and presentation so the events are attractive to sponsors and provide high standards of play the members expect. This year TTA is holding an ITTF challenge event for the Australian Open we expect the standard to be high and even higher in the near future. The Seagulls Club is still on the agenda even though it has been a long time in negotiation. By the time you read this report I am hoping the club is up and running providing TTA with a National training centre and vehicle to invite international teams and players leading up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The Presidents teleconferences are still proving to be an effective communication tool and many potential problems are discussed with positive outcomes achieved. I feel the States are working more closely with TTA and our direction is more aligned than ever before .I thank the State presidents and their boards for their co-operation which is enabling table tennis to grow and flourish. This year the Commonwealth Games is in Glasgow and TTA is well placed to do well and gain medals. It is important to do well as the Australian Commonwealth Games Association is one of our major sponsors and the Australian Sports Commission has made the Commonwealth games one of our bench mark events for funding. A good result this year will be a stepping stone in our preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. TTA’s Para programme remains the highest funded programme for TTA. The Australian Paralympic Committee continues to provide fantastic support and with the new Oceania development officer based in the TTA office it will enhance the programme further. Sue Stevenson continues to do exceptional work and her advice and dedication are critical to the success of the programme. The board of TTA is a good mix of skills and Graeme Ireland will be missed as he is not re-nominating this year. I hope we get someone with similar skills and experience to replace Graeme so as to maintain the balance. It has proved a valuable strategy to have 2 members with Asian heritage on the board as they bring a different perspective to the debate. I thank the board members for their many hours of volunteer work and hope it was as enjoyable for them as it was for me. 4 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT I thank Peter Marriott and staff for their work this year as our organisation is constantly evolving and growing. This growth provides a lot of opportunities but also a lot of challenges. I feel we are managing this growth well and the board is well aware of the pitfalls. The review this year will highlight any areas we need to improve and work on to deliver better outcomes for the membership. My role as President and Chair of TTA is rewarding and I look forward to the support of the membership to continue to lead the organisation in the future. I am currently on the board of the Commonwealth Games Association and the Oceania Table Tennis management Committee. Being on these boards gives me a broad outlook and a more international perspective. Lastly I thank all the volunteers who like the board of TTA do so much work for table tennis in Australia. The presidents and boards of the States are the main source of inspiration to the membership and collectively we can improve the image and direction of our sport so it grows and becomes a major influence, not only in international competition but also as a recreational sport enjoyed by all cultures in Australia. 5 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT CEO Report Peter Marriott It seems like every report which I write states how busy the year was and 2013 was no different. The highlight of 2013 was Australia holding the first ever Oceania Para Regional Championships in Canberra in November 2013 which was a culmination of 2 years planning since the decision by the ITTF for Oceania to become its own region. I will speak more about this event later in this report. Achievements in 2013 As mentioned above, Australia held the inaugural Oceania Para Regional Table Tennis Championships in November at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. The Championships where a huge success both on and off table thanks to the planning of Sue Stevenson and Bonnie Elliott in the TTA office and the work of the competition manager and referee team lead by Steven Lee and David Delpratt. A big thank you to all of the volunteers from ACT Table Tennis who without their efforts the work involved would have been too great for the small TTA team. On table TTA qualified 5 athletes (Melissa Tapper class 10 women, Nathan Pellissier class 8 men, Trevor Hirth class 6 men, Chris Addis class 4 men and James Kwon class 3 men) for the Para World Championships in 2014. This will be our biggest team ever attending a Para World Championships. A special note needs to be added to recognise Victor Kamizona from New Zealand qualifying for the World Championships in class 9, New Zealand’s first entry to the Para World Championships. Jens Lang as the High Performance Manager and National Head Coach continued to have good results on table with William Henzell and Miao Miao both qualifying for their respective Individual World Cup’s by winning the Oceania Cup in Bendigo. Our Australian Women’s and Men’s team both qualified for the World Team Cup with our Women’s team winning through to the quarter-finals with a win over Poland. Our junior teams qualified for the World Junior Championships and both teams achieved or improved on their seeding position which was the first time in a number of years. The participation program managed by Sue Stevenson (National Development and Inclusion Manager) has continued to gain momentum around the country and as of early 2014 has project agreements in every State and Territory in Australia. Membership in the sport has continued to rise with registered members now standing at 10,392 and active participants totalling over 35,000. Bonnie Elliott re-joined the team as the National Events Manager during the year and along with Kandice Olivieri provided valuable assistance to the office. Roger Massie continues to do an outstanding job as the Para Head Coach and is ably assisted by Alois Rosario as the Assistant Head Coach Whilst the results of all the tournaments conducted during the year are contained later in this annual report, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the State/Territory committees and volunteers who hosted the major events during the year. Australian AWD Championships – Bendigo, VIC Australian Closed Championship – Sydney, NSW Australian Open Junior Championship – Croydon, VIC 29th Australian Veterans Championship – Darwin, NT Top 10 Senior tournament – Croydon, VIC Junior and Cadet Top 10 – Croydon, VIC 6 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT Oceania Para Regional Championships – Canberra, ACT Congratulations to all of the players who competed in these events and a big thank you to all of the Coaches and Managers for helping make these events possible. Stakeholders: In early 2013 the Australian Sports Commission introduced the “Australian Winning Edge” (AWE) which set targets on Australia’s performances at World Championships, Olympic, Paralympic (including winter) and Commonwealth Games. Each sport was evaluated against the AWE targets to determine the level of funding the sport would receive. The two high performance programs of TTA were assessed and it was decided that our Para program was a High Performance Program while our able bodied program was seen as a “Whole of Sport’ program. Funding for the able program remained at $103,800 per year while our Para program received a decrease in funding to $290,000. Our Principle Funding Partner the Australian Sports Commission continues to support our sport not just in the provision of finances but the support and resources given through their staff at the Sports Commission is indispensable. A special thank you to our Partnership Manager Amanda Beehag, who has continued to assist TTA throughout 2013. The Australian Paralympic Committee continues to increase their support of Para Table Tennis, with funding and resources which has ensured that every possible opportunity was given to our Para athletes. The APC have also continued to assist TTA in developing a Classification pathway and courses for our sport and has continued to help us develop and improve our Sports Science and Sports Medicine program for our PPP athletes which would rival many other able and disabled programs around the country. It would be remiss of me not to mention the tireless efforts of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association. The ACGA continues to provide financial resources to the sport of Table Tennis to allow our athletes to prepare for the Commonwealth Games. The ACGA has also provided much needed funds to assist in sending the Australian Junior Team to the World Junior Championships. The Australian Olympic Committee also contributed funding towards international competitions during 2013. Looking Ahead: 2014 will be a massive year for TTA and its players. The Glasgow Commonwealth Games will be held from the 23rd July to the 3rd August with the players also attending the Oceania Cup and Championships, World Championships, Australia Open and National Championship before they head to Glasgow. Our Para players will also be attending international events to build up tournament credit points as they prepare for RIO and our 4 players mentioned previously will attend the Para World Championships in Beijing in September. Our junior players will also be busy as they try and qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in China during August. This qualification will be through an Australian qualification tournament in March and then an Oceania tournament in May. Last but not least the Australian veteran players will be descending on Auckland, NZ in May for the World Veterans Championships. In closing I would like to thank Will Goodier and all of the TTA Board for their support of the staff of TTA and also thank all of the National Committee members for their tireless efforts in improving the sport. 7 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT Peter Marriott Chief Executive Officer Australian Sports Commission Message Message from the Australian Sports Commission The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has two core goals - ensuring Australian athletes excel in the international sporting arena, and increasing Australians’ participation in sport. These two clear objectives are mutually reinforcing – international success inspires Australians to participate in sport, and greater participation helps nurture our future champions. Sport not only inspires and unites; it also promotes community involvement, cohesion and active lifestyles. Australians are inspired by success on the world sporting stage – it’s central to who we are as a nation. The 2012 London Olympics showed that the standards required for elite international success keep increasing relentlessly. Traditional competitors keep getting better, and rising countries have become forces to be reckoned with in many of our stronghold sports. If we want to continue to enjoy the success we expect, we need to respond to this new environment in circumstances where Government funding for high performance sport is likely to be constrained at current levels. This means we need to raise the bar ourselves in everything we do in high performance sport - our talent identification and development, coaching, sports science, use of technology and innovation, and the management and administration structures that support our athletes. It is fundamental to success that we set the same standards of excellence and accountability in all of these areas that we expect of our athletes on competition day. The ASC, which is investing a record $170 million this year in high performance programs, has the responsibility to ensure that we have high performance support structures in place to enable high performance sporting success. We have significant work to do on these fronts. Our partner sports can expect much sharper focus by the ASC in future on best practice governance and administration, intellectual property ownership, athlete management and support structures and general accountabilities by the sports. Despite recent events that have impacted upon the integrity of sport, it is important to emphasise that our commitment to elite international sporting success will never compromise our commitment to integrity in sport. Our belief in, and requirement for sports to uphold, the values of fair and honest competition is inviolable. Importantly, the ASC is investing $120 million this year to promote grassroots participation in sport throughout Australia and to continue a suite of successful national programs such as the Active Afterschool Communities program. Increased community sport participation has a profound long term dividend, and remains a vital objective of the ASC notwithstanding the challenges in high performance sport. The ASC looks forward to working in collaboration with the sport sector to encourage more people into sport and to drive Australia’s continued sporting success. REPORT 74 State / Territories Reports Tasmanian Table Tennis Association Inc. President – David Nettleton 2013 was a year which saw TTTA working across its fields of responsibility with great cohesion and efficiency. I would like though to focus on three aspects for this report. Firstly; Tournaments This year saw the general establishment of computer generated tournaments. For this development we have to thank David Clark not only for his preparedness to travel to tournaments outside Launceston, but his expertise in running the programme. All aspects of tournament organisation and administration are improved as a result, and there can be no return to the old ways of running tournaments. Secondly; Junior Development We have had a junior development programme in place for several years, and each year has seen progress, but this year saw a quantum leap in the standard of performance at the National Juniors and in our National Rankings. Well done to all those involved-the coaches, the players and the supportive parents. Thirdly, The Clubs I have not mentioned them in any of my previous reports, but this year I believe the work done at all of our affiliates deserves highlighting. Devonport for its amazing growth and development, Northern Suburbs for making the giant move to new headquarters and its continued progress, Eastside for hanging tough and beating the odds, Southern for continuing to be the Association flagship and working with TTTA in its programmes, Northern for State League and new leadership, Burnie for overcoming flawlessness and becoming reinvigorated, and last but not least, Deloraine for its continuing efforts with adjusting to circumstances. TTTA had cordial and productive relations with its affiliates. Of even greater significance is that three clubs – Northern Suburbs, Devonport and Deloraine - have been working with TTA’s Sue Stevenson to set in motion programmes to facilitate AWD participation. It is great to see our Branches becoming directly involved with the National body and National programmes. It is my hope that is only a beginning of such involvement. Other matters of significance include the acceptance of our turn to hold the National Veterans’ in 2014. To this end, I invited Ian Weller to Chair the organising committee. He accepted, for which we all should be very grateful, and the Committee met several times during the year and plans are well in train for a successful tournament. Roger Massie worked hard to complete the Sport and Recreation grant in time, during which he successfully met the outcomes that needed delivering under the terms of the Grant. Once again, thanks to Chris Honner at Sport and Rec for always being on hand to proffer advice and assistance when we needed it. The Board met several times during the year, usually through a phone hook-up courtesy of David Wilson’s office and all Directors carried out their roles to good effect. Andrew Lockwood, as a first year Director, deserves special mention, and a long and productive career as a leader of the sport is ahead of him. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 75 Council was better attended this year with most clubs represented at the 3 meetings. It is the most important body within our Constitution, so it is to be hoped that all clubs take this responsibility of attendance seriously and send delegates. We cannot let the loss of the Goodsell family go without an enormous thank you to them for their contribution to table tennis over the past decade. We hope it is not a total severance, and Maddy can continue to represent us in National tournaments for another year. Either way we wish her continued success and the family well in Victoria. Finally, thanks to those who did the bulk of the work again this year, and best wishes to all for 2014. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 76 Western Australian Table Tennis Association State Delegate – Irwin Parker 2013 was a difficult year for the Association in that the crucial portfolios of Match and Tournament Directors were unfilled most of the year. This placed an additional burden on David Cooper and Bob Lake both of were laid low with ill health during the year. Bob Lake is to be commended for staying in the job until the end of May when Irwin Parker reluctantly took over the job. He had not planned to do so as he had prearranged an extensive amount of travel. An attempt to fill the position only met with limited success as the appointee left before the probation period expired. However as positive he did make a start on the work on setting up an e-mail communication system. More recently the Association has appointed Linda Bell as Executive Director. In the absence of a Tournament Director Irwin Parker took on the overall responsibility for running the West Coast and State Championships. It would not have been possible to cope with this without the assistance of Helen Valentine, Verona Johnstone, Lyn Nolan and Dave Cooper who dragged himself out a sick bed to collate state entries and do the draw. Additionally the task of running the Grand Prix’s was spread between Dave, Bob and Irwin. In late 2013 the Match Director’s position was taken up by Adrian Reeves but the all-important Tournament portfolio still remains vacant. In the absence of a Match Director for most of the year some problems were encountered mainly in relation to fixturing. However with appointment of Adrian Reeves from the start of Spring Pennants things seem to have settled down. Chris Marsh continues to fulfil the Official Scorers position with aplomb. In addition to their assistance with the tournaments the ladies under Chairman Helen Valentine were responsible for very productive fund raising activities including two sausage swizzles and raffles. These funds were used to subsidise the State Junior teams. Also after some early hiccups the 75 th Anniversary Dinner and trophy presentation held on 23 November was a success although numbers were a little disappointing. David Brown as Coaching Director has worn several other hats, including his heavy involvement with Athletes with Disabilities, so much so that one of his athletes is in an Australian development squad and maybe a possible candidate to compete at the Rio Paralympics. In that regard congratulations are extended to Connor Johnston on his selection in the Australian team that went to Thailand. Additionally David conducted 5 Junior Graded Tournaments and two schools tournaments and conducted numerous active after school sessions. Also he ran a level 0 coaching accreditation course which resulted in 9 new coaches. A visit by national coach Jens Lang was well coordinated by Lyn Nolan Long standing State Junior coach Dennis Chen was replaced by Craig Campbell and newly arrived Alvin Jiang was appointed senior coach. As a result of the enthusiasm of these two coaches participation in coaching sessions was greatly increased. Western Australian participation in the National (senior) championship was only second to the host state. Three Men’s, One Women’s and an under 21 Women’s team were entered. Bronze medals were won By Katy Valentine and Holly Nicolas in the under Women’s Doubles. Holly performances led to her selection in the team to compete in the Oceania championships in New Caledonia As Western Australia is due to host the Australian National Championship in 2014 it was pleasing that we had such a strong representation. Again Western Australia was well represented at the Junior Championship and I must compliment Verona Johnstone for her efforts in managing the teams. The under 15 girls won a bronze medal and team members Holly Nicolas and Katy Valentine were listed in the order of merit as was Daniel Trang and Pan Yi. This year the Veterans stole the thunder by winning the over 40 team’s event. This is the fifth team title achieved by WA in National Championships and the second for the 40’s. Team members Craig Campbell, Jeff Drew, Greg Letts and Russell Stein are to be congratulated on their efforts. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 77 Webmaster Otti Beerli saw through with the help of Namoi Jensen the setting up of the new Association website. This will always be a work in progress as additional information is posted and improvements made. Otti was also the driving force behind the development of a new constitution for the Association. However as an alternative constitution was put up at the AGM by a member neither versions received the required 75% majority. Quite a lot of extra work is therefore still required in this area. Greg Letts continued his record stint as editor of 11UP which he prepares on a professional basis. Additionally Greg assisted in the coaching of our juniors and was ever willing to provide support to the office in the computing area. Phil Ranger (Snr) continues to look after the junior club and he has guided many a junior to serious competition. Notably through the Morley club Phil has encouraged many juniors to participate in the pennant competitions Apart from the Board members there were, many other volunteers to numerous to name including Charles Ellwood, Lindsay Mee and Maureen Hooper. Maureen has looked after and nurtured our gardens for years and the results speak for themselves. Charles has assisted in numerous ways, not the least of which has been his regular contribution in putting together 11Up. Lindsay has also been a tower of strength. His efforts to brighten up the appearance of the Centre and improve it have not gone unnoticed. The Association made a profit of $26418 which was well up on last year’s profit of $6984. The increase in profit was mainly due to the $13868 profit on hosting the Australian Junior Championship and the $12,477 increase in centre profit. I would like to thank our Canteen Manager, Peter Mascall, for his efforts in managing the Centre. Peter McKenzie continued as the centre cleaner and by cleaning well outside normal opening hours has allowed for greater utilisation of the Centre. Core funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) was maintained at $16,000 and will be maintained in 2013/14. Also the DSR provided a $10,000 grant toward the hosting of the Australian Junior Championships and additional funding of in excess of $9,000 has been provided for country enrichment scholarships, a ‘Sport Recreators’ project and for the development of a strategic plan. Development funding from Healthway for the 2013 calendar year amounted at $13,000. Additionally Heathway continued to provide $2,500 sponsorship for the State Championship. Future funding has been tied into calendar years with $16,000 being approved for the 2014 calendar year. Healthway income was supplemented by the ASC’S ‘Active After School’ program which complements the development activities of the Healthway program. This excellent support received from the Department of Sport and Recreation, from Healthway has been most appreciated. However the support from the Town of Victoria Park in relation to facilities has been well less than desired. They have now backed away from an earlier commitment to assist us with a new venue. The Association net contribution toward state team travel and entry fee expenses amounted to $22,387 of which of which approximately $4,000 was provided by the Associations fund raising committee. Overall the Association is in a very sound financial position with current working capital (Current Assets less Current liabilities) in excess of $76,000 and having over $24,000 in the Centre Fund which will be needed if we ever secure a new venue. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 78 ACT Table Tennis Association President – Glenys Joliffe This will be my last report as President. At the outset, I want to thank everyone for their amazing commitment to Table Tennis in and beyond the A.C.T. - as players, coaches, administrators and volunteers of all kinds. Membership numbers Our Membership in 2013 reached 351 – the highest annual total for many years. Thanking A.C.T. Department of Sport & Recreation Thank you very much to Sport & Recreation Services for their continued support for Table Tennis A.C.T. over the years. New Greenway Centre (in Tuggeranong) After many years of hard work by many people, at long last we received the opportunity to expand to an additional venue at Greenway (in Tuggeranong region). TTACT began using the new venue, initially at two sessions per week, in the latter half of 2013. At the new Tuggeranong Archery Centre in Greenway – an additional venue for table tennis A.C.T. Open Championships We ran a very successful A.C.T. Open, with many entries from interstate – mainly from NSW. Thanks go to players from TTNSW for their support (the first interstaters to use the new venue in Tuggeranong). The NSW players seemed to be impressed by the venue and expressed interest in returning next year. Thanks also to Referee Stephen Gillespie who gave excellent critical feedback which we were able to learn from. Thanks go to David Swanton and his large team including Rob Crowdy and Paul Hendriks. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 79 Some of the NSW winners at the successful A.C.T. Open National Veterans Table Tennis Championships The National Veterans Championships in Darwin were enjoyed by all. A.C.T. players put in excellent performances. Trevor Taylforth achieved a ranking of 5 th in the Over 60’s Men Order of Merit. Wen Ung defeated Max Wellington (later ranked 4 th in Order of Merit) in the Over 50’s Men team’s event; and finished 6th in the Order of Merit. Bryan Harper gained 8th place in the Order of Merit in the Over 50’s Men. Our Veterans celebrate their achievements in Darwin Secondary Schools Championships At Kingston Table Tennis Centre in early August 2013, the successful running of our Annual (A.C.T.) Secondary Table Tennis Championships saw the debut of Alfred Deakin High School, and the retirement of stalwart Mark Turnbull of Lyneham High School. Arthur Wilks’ Book Launch The very successful launch of the History of Table Tennis in the A.C.T. brought together many players from previous eras as well as those still competing. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 80 Athletes with Disabilities The Lyneham High School program continued every Monday, with thanks to Patrick Horn, Paul Keese and Hannah Keese. Rosanna Horn co-ordinated a new Saturday program alternating between the Kingston Centre and the Tuggeranong Archery Centre in Greenway. I would like to make special mention of Rosanna’s work in setting up new programs like this, educating locals about AWD, and getting us involved nationally and internationally, for example the recent Oceania Regional Championships. Volunteer of the Year Lyn Rainforest (Competitions Director) President’s Perpetual Award Rosanna Horn Outgoing President’s Special Awards for Leadership in 2013 Special Contribution: Trevor Taylforth Special Contribution: David Swanton Athletes with a Disability: Rosanna Horn Most Improved Player Sam Carters Thanks to our Sponsor and our Patron Our generous sponsor Paul Pinkewich and our innovative patron Sue Marriage were once again extremely valuable to our Association. Thank you to our own people Thanks to the Board members for their vast and varied efforts. I will be thanking them personally but would like to take the opportunity here to make their very valuable contributions known: The Competitions Committee, especially Lyn Rainforest, deserves our deepest gratitude for such a fine ongoing competition experience for players at all levels. New people have joined the AWD Working Group of their own accord - this is greatly appreciated. Song Chen, Centre Manager is a rock. Bill Hawkins (and his marvellous wife), Greenway Centre Manager, has been crucial to the operation of a new venue for table tennis in the south part of A.C.T. in Tuggeranong. To all members, I wish to thank you for your wonderful support (personally and as volunteers) over the past 25 years, when I have held executive positions with TTACT. This has been an important part of my life and you have all given me strong and fond memories to savour as I continue volunteering as long as possible with veterans, AWD and Schools programs. Glenys Joliffe – President, Signing off 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 81 Table Tennis Queensland President – Trevor Barrett The year 2013 proved to be one of significant change for Table Tennis Queensland (TTQ) in a number of different aspects of our operation. Probably the most significant of these changes occurred when our then Executive Officer, Derek Scott, advised the Board of his decision to tender his resignation. Derek had done a commendable job for TTQ, particularly in the area of guiding the Board to develop and put in place the considerable amount of documentation that is needed for the successful management of an Incorporated Association such as TTQ. While to the general membership such documentation may seem trivia l, it is vitally important for our ability to gain funding, and to meet our various legal obligations as an organisation. Derek was also instrumental during his final year in putting in place mechanisms to enable TTQ to take greater control in the organisation and running of our own tournaments, and to bring about more consistency in the organisation and the management of these events. While still in trial, our new structures seem to be successful. Finally, the various annual reports detailing Derek’s time with TTQ are clear testimony to his achievements, and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all TTQ members to formally recognise Derek’s contributions to Table Tennis in Queensland. Change is a natural part of the development cycle of any organisation if it is to continue to make positive growth. Derek’s departure led to an extensive interview process, after which the Board was pleased to appoint Jason Walsh as our new Executive Officer. As many would know, Jason was our Regional Club Coordinator in the South-Eastern region, and consequently already had considerable insight into the workings of TTQ. Jason’s appointment also provided the opening for Cameron McDonald to assume the vacant Regional Club Coordinator’s role, a role to which he has readily adapted. I would like to commend the Moreton Bay Association for staging an inaugural Women’s National Table Tennis Challenge in September 2013. The event was the first of its kind in Queensland and was a great success, so much so that it will be part of the annual TTQ calendar. Membership Membership figures for 2013 showed a slight decrease on the previous year from 1840 to 1762. However, 12 (50%) of our clubs showed an increase in members on the previous year. Brisbane Table Tennis Association has reclaimed the largest club in the state title (225), followed close behind by a resurgent Wynnum (187). Club membership grew from 23 to 24 with Maleny Table Tennis Club joining TTQ. The Queensland schools again had a record number of teams and schools participate with 127 teams (254 participants) from 35 schools across four events at Gold Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Cairns. My thanks go to all of the volunteers who gave up their time to help in running these events. Again we are continuing to look at expanding this event in 2014 perhaps introducing a fifth venue depending upon demand. People There was one State Referee course held in Brisbane, this was presented by Dave Delpratt with the assistance of Graeme Ireland. Also one Association Umpire Course was held during 2013 in Moreton Bay, this course was presented by Mick McShane. There were two Tops Coaching Courses offered in 2013, run by Cathy Townsend, State Coaching Director. My thanks to all of our presenters for their efforts during 2013. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 82 The introduction of the new Tops Award has continued to see a large increase in the number of coaches becoming accredited. In 2013 a new State Referee award was introduced. This award has been introduced to assist referees continue toward national accreditation by gaining experience at the various Queensland state championships. Development In 2013 we welcomed Cameron McDonald as our new Regional Club Coordinator for the South-East Queensland area. A series of State Training Camps were organised at various venues across the state (often in conjunction with coaching courses) and were generally a success. Based on this, a series of events have been organised for 2014 to extend this program. Two clubs were selected by TTA for Federal Government participation funding to develop their Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) programs: Brisbane and Toowoomba. Both clubs have gained new equipment and improved programs for CALD participants through this funding. Governance The 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM) brought about some changes to the TTQ Board of Management with Terry Morato filling the position vacated by Paul Uttley. During 2013 the Board of Management developed, reviewed or updated the following governance documentation: Constitution & Bylaws, Risk Management documentation, State Coach Selection Policy, Governance Policies, Code of Conduct, Equity Policy and Statement. Finance TTQ received government funding of $184,000 (+GST) in 2013 in funding, split across core funding and Local Sport and Recreation Jobs Plan Funding. The core funding is guaranteed until the end of 2013 and increased in line with CPI until this time. The Jobs Plan Funding similarly is guaranteed until mid-2014 and again will increase in line with CPI. Towards the end of 2013 TTQ applied for funding to the Queensland Government through the Queensland Sport and Recreation Industry Development Program 2014-2016. TTQ have secured funding of $129,800 each year for 2014- 2016. This is a great result and will secure the development of Table Tennis in Queensland for future. Conclusion Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the countless volunteers in our associations who work tirelessly at our clubs and events, and whose efforts really do provide the back-bone of our sport. I encourage all clubs to continue to recognise and value your volunteers. I would also like to recognise the efforts of our staff, namely Jason Walsh, Karen Carruthers, Cameron McDonald and Alexi Sachlikidis, and also the members of the Board of TTQ for the efforts that you have made throughout 2013 to promote the sport of table tennis in Queensland. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 83 Table Tennis Victoria President – Phillip Carruthers TTV has had a remarkable year as a sporting body and as a membership organisation. Our playing membership has passed 4,000 for the first time, an increase of 5%, and we now have 46 affiliated associations, some of which have multiple clubs. On the close of 2013 we de-commissioned our membership system in preparation for introduction of a new membership system, now in early days of implementation, which provides us with a modern marketing tool and with key data to run our business. It also provides us with specific table tennis capabilities to allocate rating points to players which they can access in graphic form via the web. Tournament software which is linked to both the membership and player points’ modules is well developed and should be implemented in the next six months. Our Finance and Audit Committee continues to provide strategic financial direction and we will achieve a healthy surplus this year. On the cusp of 2014 we also upgraded our financial system to Xero, which we are finding just as capable as MYOB, but easier to use. At the same time we have adopted a strategy of using an external accounting firm to assist us on a regular basis with financial accounting. Our enhanced grant performance in 2012 and 2013 assisted in obtaining new financial grants and project funding including a substantial ‘Access All Abilities’ grant for 2 years, and we have undertaken a number of initiatives, particularly with regard to CALD participants. Grants to review membership and to conduct coaching were also received. We thank the Victorian government and in particular the support of our outgoing Minister, Hugh Delahunty, and Sport and Recreation Victoria for having faith in our ability to deliver. The approach of the Board in becoming more strategic and empowering the CEO and staff to attend to operational matters has continued to produce results, with more timely operational decisions and a broader approach by the Board to policy issues. The Board re-affirmed its policy of providing the opportunity for affiliates to conduct major championships, rather than having TTV run these events and we have seen affiliates, particularly Croydon and Ballarat this year, run excellent and profitable events. TTV adopted a new Constitution in 2013. It was necessary to do this to comply with changes in the Victorian Association Act, and to tidy up a few areas which had become outdated. The changes were passed unanimously. Another significant improvement in 2013 was in branding of the organisation. We were fortunate to have a major advertising agency provide us with pro bono assistance with this branding which flows across all mediums, including our new state uniforms for 2014. Any players and officials visiting Melbourne are welcome to visit our office at the Melbourne Sports Hub. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 84 Table Tennis New South Wales President – Dennis O’Brien 2013 saw the first totally sponsored National Tournament held in Sydney. Whilst the idea of a fully sponsored tournament is a good one the terms and conditions need to be clear from the beginning. As with most events there were hiccups and hurdles to overcome. The actual tournament went well and from the players perspective was successful. This was mainly due to the tireless efforts of the organising committee. It is fair to say that some of the arrangements from TTA fell short of expectations and this was largely responsible for a significant impact on our finances. TTNSW has continued to grow our membership base in two areas: 1. Our Affiliated Clubs and associations now total in excess of 50 which is a doubling of our numbers in the last 5 years. 2. The decision, with the approval of TTA, to include a Social Membership category has given us in excess of 1500 Social Members. We look forward to further expanding our base in the coming years Again our representative players gave their all and did NSW proud. We have a number of up and coming players which bodes well for our future results in both National and International competition. It must always be remembered that we are a small sport with minimal financial support from Governments or sponsors. There are many areas we could improve upon which greater financial support would allow us to promote. It is with regret that we advise that Dot De Low, a tremendous asset to our sport, passed away recently at the age of 103. She continued to play our game until a few weeks before our passing. What a great advertisement she was for our sport. We look forward to an even better year for our sport Australia wide in 2014. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 85 Table Tennis South Australia President – Chris Leonard Whilst contemplating writing this report and looking back at previous years I was surprised to find that I have now been President for 12 years which of course means that this is my 12th Annual Report and each one seems to become more difficult to write – however I am pleased to report on some positive developments throughout this year. Looking back, at the 2002 AGM there were only four directors elected to hold positions on the board which obviously left a large number of portfolios shared among a small number of directors. Several directors were appointed during 2003 and over the years more people have come on board to assist with table tennis at state level and we now have almost a complete board with only two portfolios unfilled. Constitution At the 2013 AGM changes to the constitution were submitted for consideration along with a recommendation from the Board on the acceptability of those changes. There was much criticism of the way that the changes had been presented and therefore none of those changes were accepted This matter has been discussed by the Board and it was decided that rather than resubmitting any changes to the constitution that the constitution would be reviewed and updated. This will be done during 2014 and if ready will be submitted to the 2015 AGM. New Directors At the beginning of the year we welcomed Bill Schenk as our Schools Director and lost John Potter as a Director due to time commitments. The most important addition to the Board came in December with the appointment of Andrew Muecke as Finance Director. This appointment has the added bonus of considerably reducing the workload of Ann Percy who had been doing the Finance in conjunction with the Executive Directors role since Sally Potter retired from the Board. It is early days yet for Andrew with a lot to learn in his new position and I wish him well. Bill Schenk on the other hand has had more time to settle in and seems to be handling his role very well and brings another important perspective to board discussions. Strategic Plan 2013 – 2017 With the absence of a Policy & Planning Director and the need for a new Strategic Plan to be prepared the Board took on the task of preparing Table Tennis South Australia’s Strategic Plan which would cover the next three years with a view that the long term vision is one that is in perpetuity. Paul Langley took the reins as facilitator and prepared the ground work for the Board to participate in a number of workshops to review, consider and then determine the content of the new plan with each board member contributing relevant items regarding their particular portfolios. My thanks to Paul for the enormous amount of time he has put into the preparation and subsequent writing of the plan and its implementation. It is expected that, unlike in previous years, the board will monitor the plans progress with each director submitting monthly reports to the board with reference to what they have achieved as their part of the plan. TTA We continue to have regular contact with the national body not only through the AGM and conference, which will again be held in Adelaide this year, but through teleconferences held regularly throughout the year. These teleconferences are conducted by the TTA President and include the TTA CEO and each of the State Presidents. They are very informative sessions and allow the state Presidents to be kept up to date with TTA plans and for TTA to also seek feedback on those plans. This initiative was begun by TTA President Will Goodier several years ago and has continued to provide a much improved communication stream form TTA to its Voting Members. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 86 Communication We are continually trying to improve our communication with our affiliates either personally or through our website. Communication is a two way street and it is sometimes necessary for the affiliates to initiate contact where a problem exists or it is thought that assistance from TTSA may be required. Help cannot be forthcoming if there is no communication. High Performance We continue to finance and support a high performance squad for training and developing our future elite players. Under the guidance of Paul Langley the development program continues to bring success to the state (and is the last sole centrally co-ordinated training facility in Australia with private enterprise now the key training provider in other states – which creates another dimension of challenges for the creation of athlete pathways) and is a credit to Paul and his team (assistants, parents and administration) and of course the players concerned. Tournaments Although there were no national championships scheduled in SA this year we have continued to make plans for the improvement of our local events. We will soon have entry forms available on line through our website (not just downloadable but forms that can be completed online) and, it is hoped, tournament management will soon be by computer with all the advantages that that will bring. We have also been fine tuning the Tournament regulations relating to the conduct of tournaments by affiliates which provide a clear understanding of what is required for each affiliate to comply with state regulations in order for the tournament results to be considered for state team selection and state rankings. Development Officer Kay Crowell has continued in the role of part time development officer and represented TTSA at various community and school events as well as promotional events where we have received a request for table tennis to participate. Kay has also been involved in developing schools programs with local councils, most notably the City of Salisbury. When Kay does these events we try to engage with local clubs or associations so they can recruit new players to their clubs to build and develop the game of Table Tennis – however this has been a challenge in the City of Salisbury area. I implore our affiliates to get behind these programs as there is a significant amount of benefit to local clubs. As part of our strategic plan, one of the four strategic priorities is to develop and enhance the community aspect of Table Tennis, and programs like this are integral part of the enhancement of the game with benefits to the local community, affiliates and the game in general. Marketing Our new marketing director (Alex Vanderklugt) has been progressing with our plan to make contact (and in some instances re-connect) with non-affiliated table tennis clubs and associations in order to encourage them to consider affiliation with TTSA by outlining the advantages on offer. Alex has also prepared our face book page and contributed ideas towards the improvement of our website which remains a work in progress as far as improvements are concerned. As part of this Annual Report you will find individual reports submitted by each of the directors detailing their activities during the year and highlighting what they have in mind for the coming year. I would like thank each of the board members for their work during the year and commend them for their efforts. It is an unfortunate fact that some portfolios are more onerous than others which means that some of the board members work harder than others on TTSA matters but all of them tend to also work for table tennis in other areas. Why do they do it? Well it’s certainly not for the money or the glory or the acclaim they receive. Very often their efforts remain unacknowledged at best or at worst criticised by their peers. As I have said before we must all remember that their services are given freely and for the love of the sport. Without each and every one of them and their contemporaries at affiliate level there would be no table tennis. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 87 The Future At the time of writing this report it is my understanding that at least one nomination for the position of President will be received and with that in mind I have decided that the time has come for me to step aside and leave the hard work to a younger, fitter and certainly healthier person. It has been my pleasure to have served the sport I love and work with many other people who share my enthusiasm and passion for the sport. I have made many friends in table tennis through the years and I hope that I may still be able to participate in some way in the years to come. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 88 Table Tennis Northern Territory President – John Pudney Report not available at time of print. 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 89 Address Table Tennis Australia Ltd Office 2.13 Sports House 150 Caxton Street Milton QLD 4064 Telephone Fax Email Website 07 3369 4999 07 3369 4966 [email protected] www.tabletennis.org.au 2013 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT 90
