and Flavours of Lošinj“ concept
and project.
The Fragrances and Tastes
of Lošinj project is based on
tradition. As early as in 1892,
Professor Ambroz Haračić,
a biologist, studied the
island’s specific microclimate.
During the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy, Lošinj was
proclaimed a climatic health
resort for bronchial diseases.
Project started by taking small
steps, such as developing
the Garden of Fine Scents,
and then expanded outside
the Croatian borders and
around the world. The core
principles that our project and
tourism in general rest on are
sustainability and responsibility.
We are developing a center of
excellence, ensuring education
for all, from programs intended
for kindergarten children to
adult education and lifelong
learning programs.

APOXYOMENOS
- a masterpiece of Croatian
and world heritage
(2nd – 1st century B.C.)
The antique bronze
statue of an athlete, 192
cm tall, taken from the
sea bed between the
islet of Vele Orjule and
the island of Lošinj on
27 April 1999, is the only
large bronze statue found
to date on the eastern
coast of the Adriatic.
It is assumed that it was deposited
in the sea at the beginning of the
1st century when it was thrown
overboard during bad weather
because of the danger of the ship
overturning or as a sacrifice to
the gods for safe passage through
the Osor channel to a prosperous
destination/port of call on the
north Adriatic.
The statue represents an athlete, a
young sportsman, at the moment
of cleaning oil, dust and sweat
from his body with a scraping tool
after a competition.
During restoration, analysing the
material and style of workmanship,
the statue was dated from the
2nd – 1st century B.C. while the
prototype on which it was made is
considerably older, from the middle
of the 4th century B.C.
From eight well-known variations
of the Apoxyomenos prototype
(the most famous being the bronze
statue from Kunsthistorisches
Museum in Vienna, discovered in
1896 in Ephesus), the Lošinj statue
is the most perfect and bestpreserved. The statue’s sculptor is
unknown but the classical beauty
and high quality of workmanship
testify to a consummate craftsman.
The Apoxyomenos statue will be
permanently exhibited in Mali
Lošinj in the Kvarner Palace.
Lošinj historical
underwater park
The park is located within
the Diver Lošinj diving
centre in Čikat Bay, which
is situated 1 km from the
centre of Mali Lošinj.
The setup of the park consists of a
total of 11 different exponents, which
have been placed between 5 and 15
meters deep in the water and testify
about the rich history of the island
and its region. Among the exhibited
items, there are replicas of cannons
from the 16th century, replicas of
ancient amphoras, anchors from
the 4th and 5th centuries, Venetian
cannons, machine guns from World
War II, while the greatest attraction
of the underwater park is the replica
of the ancient bronze athlete statue
“Apoxyomenos” from the 2nd – 1st
century B.C., which is also a sort of
a symbol of Mali Lošinj. The replica
of Apoxyomenos has been placed
in the upright position in its natural
size, while the entire trail tour of the
park is roughly 300 meters long.
All licensed divers can visit the
park, and due to relatively shallow
waters in which the exhibit items are
placed, persons without any diving
experience can dive into the park in
the company of a diving instructor
from the Diver Lošinj diving centre
through the so-called “Discovery
Dive” program. Children under the
age of 12 cannot partake in the
program, while all adults can, as long
as they don’t have any health issues.
Between May 1st and October
30th, the park is open daily
(including Sundays) from 8 a.m.
to 6 p.m.
Footpath of vitality
We have created over
250 kilometers of walking
trails for you. Along these
trails, you can encounter
guests from all over the
world. Wake up in the
morning, fill your lungs
with the morning air and
take a walk with the first
rays of the sun. If you opt
for some other physical
activity, such as jogging
or biking, you will be able
to enjoy fragrant walking
trails, beautiful landscapes,
view spots and coves.
Along the three kilometers of the
Mali Lošinj – Veli Lošinj footpath
that stretches along the coast,
hidden in a hundred-year-old pine
forest, educational panels have
been put up that provide the
hikers with information on the
importance of proper posture and
breathing, as well as help them
become aware of their movements
and processes during their walks.
The panels are on permanent
display and thanks to them, the
walkers can maximise the benefits
of nature.
There are about 10,000 steps
in both ways, recommended to
be taken every day according to
the World Health Organisation
standards. Active walkers can do
both directions in 45 minutes,
while recreational and slower
walkers will need about an hour
and a half.
The guests can walk along the
footpath on their own but there
are also guided walks with
instructors from the PBS Studio
at the Vitality Hotel Punta.

in the eponymous bay. Its
location is at the cemetery where

4. Islands MTB Stage Race
Date: 17-18 April 2015
Location : island of Lošinj
Description : A unique mountain
bike race, 4 days – 4 islands (Rab,
Krk, Cres, Lošinj). The trails follow
the coast closely and pass ancient
locations, then they continue
uphill from where you can have a
spectacular view of the Kvarner
Bay. The start of the last part of
the race is from the main square in
Mali Lošinj on 18 April, 2015 at 10
AM and the winners announcement
will be held at 7 PM at the same
location. An ideal way to enjoy the
beauties of the Lošinj archipelago.
“Muaj” of Nerezine
Date: 3 May 2015
Location: Nerezine –
Studenac Square at 10.30 am
Description: Folk-stage event
which has taken place for over
200 years on the first Sunday of
May, symbolising the welcoming
of spring. Don’t be surprised when
you see a boat in the middle of
the square. The local boys choose
the one that belongs to the most
beautiful girl in Nerezine, and the
flowers on the square are taken
from the gardens of unmarried
girls, while the doors represent the
entrance to this unique “garden”.
Description: Klape, harmony
singing, is traditional Croatian
vocal music originating from
Dalmatia, coastal and island
regions. UNESCO included this
music on its list of Intangible
World Heritage in Europe. Enjoy
beautiful sounds in the wonderful
ambience of the square.

Description: The beginnings of the
sport sailing on Lošinj begun in the
second half of the 19th century and
it is closely tied to the tradition of
seafaring and shipbuilding. The first
day route is Mali Lošinj – Susak –
Ilovik – Mali Lošinj, while the second
day includes the attractive «rod«
sailing in the port of Mali Lošinj.

entertainment event in Nerezine
which consists of competitions
in slippery slope, beach volley,

the tug of war competition.
5th Festival of Lošinj Balconies

Description: Wooden sailboats
regatta has been held
intermittently since 1920. This

to see how people used to sail

Description: The hunt for sea bream
is done the old-fashioned way, by

whole of the Adriatic. In the evening,
fisherman’s fête with tasting of the
fish. Weighing the catch, winners
announcement and awards reception
will take place on Republika Hrvatska
Square or at the fish market from 5 pm.
