A WAKENINGS
IT IS A MATTER OF POSITIONING …
BY KEARA COUGHLIN
Recently, I found myself in a discussion with
some friends about the challenges of working
in areas that seem to demonstrate, far too
frequently, a “three steps forward and five
steps back” ebb and flow. The scope of the
discussion included everything from ministry
in the Catholic Church to social movements
Keara Coughlin
to eradicate hunger and homelessness in
the U.S. No matter what sort of organization we find ourselves
part of, so often it comes down to “the numbers.” The people
who so generously offer funding or resources want reports that
detail “the steps we are taking to produce the desired outcome.”
We must be able to answer questions such as “How many
individuals no longer live on the streets as a result of your
work?” or “How many individuals are now ‘active members in
their parish’ as a result of your Church event or program?”
As a member of a staff, teams, and task forces who have been
charged with “bringing about change” in the lives of members
of Old St. Pat’s, in the lives of those who find themselves
“strangers” in our land, in the lives of young adults searching for
community, etc.; I find myself constantly being drawn into this
“we want results” type of mentality. I suppose this is
understandable, for the supporters of and donors to non profit
organizations (such as the Catholic Church) and the
members of the community at large have a right to demand
both transparency and accountability in our activities.
And let’s face it: number-based results affirm our resources
and efforts are actually making a difference.
Here is the tough part, though: if we call ourselves Christians
and we take that seriously, we are
called to also consider how
Perhaps all
Jesus did things. Upon
Jesus would
reflection, it would seem the
ask us is:
methodology we use in attaining
“effectiveness” and “results” is a
Where are
methodology in which Jesus
you standing?
himself chose NOT to engage.
Greg Boyle, S.J. — a Jesuit priest who has found himself drawn
into ministry to and among gang members in East Los Angeles
for the past 25 years — suggests that perhaps all Jesus would
ask us is: Where are you standing? Boyle suggests that perhaps
our greatest call is to fidelity to the work of incarnating the
compassion of God in our world. He writes, we can, for
instance, abolish slavery
I’m pretty confident
“not by strategizing our
way out of slavery,” but by
that the success
standing in solidarity with
Jesus desires is also
the slave. And, “by so
doing, we diminish
what we call the
slavery’s ability to stand.”
“slow work of God.”
Boyle writes, “Success and
failure, ultimately, have little to do with living the Gospel.
Jesus just stood with the outcasts until they were welcomed,
or until he was crucified — whichever came first.” Too radical
for many to swallow, this was, in fact, the way of our God:
a God who crossed borders back and forth for the sole purpose
of locating herself with the ones that were least (least likely to
amount to anything, least likely to be successful, least likely to
ever “get it together”).
I recall a moment four years ago when Mel, a 20-year-old college
student struggling with bipolar disorder as well as the fact her
culture, school, and Church seemed to be at odds with her
homosexuality, asked me with eyes full of tears, “Tell me it
matters to you I am here! Tell me it matters I am at this school,
in this community, and in this world.” Vivid is my memory of
holding her and assuring her it did matter to me, as we both
cried. She then asked if it would be OK for her to believe my
response represented that of the whole Church. Clear to me is
the memory of standing alongside Mel’s friends and classmates
two years later as we wept at Mel’s memorial service after she
took her life. Even today, I find myself praying “It did matter,
Mel. I hope for even one moment, you believed that.”
I am not sure about too many things, but I am pretty confident
the success Jesus desires is also what we call the “slow work
of God.” It is ours to trust that this work is happening in
mysteries such as these: the moments we are able to be
present, to stand with, and represent Christ to “the other”
until those exclusionary borders are diminished to the point
they can no longer stand.

C OMMUNITY FAITH F ORMATION
ADULT SPIRITUALITY AND FAITH FORMATION
During the course of the coming year, you will hear more about the Church’s Liturgy, commonly known to us as the Sunday Mass. What
you will be hearing, if you have not heard already, is that the Church has made some pretty significant alterations to the language and
words of the English translation to the Mass. While the “rites” will stay the same, the words we say at Mass are going to change,
beginning with Advent, 2011. There are many questions being raised as to why and what does this all mean for us as a Catholic
community. Well, one of the many blessings we have at Old St. Pat’s is found in the person of Fr. Edward Foley, who is a professor of
liturgical theology at Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park. Besides being a former teacher of mine, Ed is a weekend presider at
Old St. Pat’s and one of the best preachers in town and has agreed to host a three-part series of presentations related to the new Mass.
I am most grateful to Ed for offering this informative and relevant series at Old St. Pat’s. Please join us!
Fr. Tom Hurley
Pastor, Old St. Patrick’s Church
Preparing for the New Roman Missal:
Theological and Pastoral Reflections
with Fr. Ed Foley
Session One:
“What Has Changed And Why?”
Sunday, February 20
10:45 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Old St. Pat’s Church Hall
700 W. Adams, Chicago
So that we may offer you our best
hospitality, please R.S.V.P. to 312.648.1021
by Wednesday, February 16.
This session will outline some of the
theological and sociological reasons for
the changes found in the New Roman
Missal and its English Translation. It will
also offer an overview of the changed
texts. Each of the three programs will
include a PowerPoint presentation
followed by a question and
discussion session.
Session Two:
“What Was The Process
And What Is At Stake?”
Sunday, March 27
10:45 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Fr. Jack Wall Mission Center, Room 25ABC
711 W. Monroe Street, Chicago
So that we may offer you our best
hospitality, please R.S.V.P. to 312.648.1021
by Wednesday, March 23.
Our second session will provide an
historical overview of the long process
(more than 25 years) that has led to this
change. It will also examine some of the
theological and ecclesiological issues at
stake in this and every vernacular
translation of the Church’s Liturgy.
Session Three:
“Our Pastoral Response”
Sunday, May 1
10:45 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Old St. Pat’s Church Hall
700 W. Adams, Chicago
So that we may offer you our best
hospitality, please R.S.V.P to 312.648.1021
by Wednesday, April 27.
In our final session, we will explore how
this new translation provides an
opportunity for faith communities to
reconsider how Liturgy is at the very
center of the life of a faith community.
This “pastoral response” will include
strategic suggestions for the exploration
and implementation of the new translation
of the Roman Missal.
Edward Foley, Capuchin is the Duns Scotus Professor of Spirituality and Professor of Liturgy and Music at the Catholic Theological
Union in Chicago. With 19 books to his credit, he is currently serving as general editor for a scholarly commentary on the new Order of
Mass to be published by the Liturgical Press. We at Old St. Patrick’s Church are delighted Fr. Foley is a regular guest presider and
preacher at our Sunday Liturgies.

Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes'
Remembrance Authority, was established in 1953 by an act
of the Israeli Knesset in order to memorialize the six million
Jews murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators in the
horrific attempt to eradicate the name and culture of Israel.
Yad Vashem ensures the memory of those who perished
while paying tribute to the heroism and fortitude of those
who suffered under and struggled against the Nazis, both
Jews and the Righteous Among the Nations.
Charged with the vital mission of perpetuating Holocaust
remembrance, Yad Vashem works to ensure that the legacy
of the Holocaust will be passed down to future generations
and will forever dwell in the conscience of humanity. We
carry out this mission through four major areas of activity:
commemoration, documentation, research, and education.
Yad Vashem is situated on Har Hazikaron (the Mount of
Remembrance), adjacent to Har Herzl, Jerusalem, and
extends over 45 acres. The campus houses the new museum
complex, the International School for Holocaust Education,
the Archives and Library Building, the International Institute
for Holocaust Research, and many unique monuments
dedicated to the memories of those who struggled and
those who perished. Special events open to the public are
held on a regular basis and Yad Vashem is host to several
new and important traveling exhibitions each year. More
than 1.5 million people visit annually from around the world,
including survivors, students, soldiers, clergy, researchers,
visiting dignitaries and guests of the Government of Israel.

Funn Food Connection at
Ay Ay Picante
The Funn Committee and Connections
are co-hosting a night of Peruvian
cuisine at Ay Ay Picante — February’s
BYOB. In the ancient kingdom of Tawantisuyo, the Inca and their
predecessors created a rich gastronomic tradition. For thousands
of years, the Andean people produced delicious dishes using
chilies, corn, avocados, tomatoes, and potatoes. It would take
many more years before the rest of the world had access to most
of these ingredients. Come and join us for a delightful evening on
Saturday, February 26 at
Ay Ay Picante, 4569 North Elston, Chicago. Drinks will be served at
6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. To R.S.V.P., please contact
Lizbeth Gain at [email protected], or 773.677.9283.
Connections February Service Project
Saturday, February 26
Connections invites you to join them from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 26 at the House
of Mary and Joseph Shelter, 2715 W. Harrison,
Chicago. The facility shelters and feeds more
than 250 homeless persons every night. Although
the shelter needs vast repairs, the work to be
accomplished will focus on the kitchen where meals are prepared,
and clients eat standing up at stainless steel tables. The plan is to
paint, repair faucets, stabilize the tables, and hang pictures. To
complete these tasks, 25 - 30 volunteers will be needed. If you
would like to participate in this service project, please contact Jim
Otto at [email protected], or Jim Uhlarik at [email protected].

Second Collection – 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal
Sunday, February 20
The Annual Catholic Appeal in support of the work of the Archdiocese will
take place on Sunday, February 20, 2011. This is the one time during the
year all Catholics are asked to make a pledge, payable in installments to
the Archdiocese so that it can meet the spiritual, educational and temporal
needs of parishes, schools, and the people throughout our Archdiocese.
If you have received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and
bring it to Mass next Sunday, February 20, or you can mail it back to Old
St. Pat’s. For those who did not receive a mailing, envelopes will be in the
pews for your convenience .
The theme of the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal is “…seek first the
kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we are not to worry
about the things of this world. Rather, we are to seek the kingdom of God
and the Father will reward us. God provides all that we have and all that
we are. Stewardship, in part, is the recognition of God’s gifts and the
obligation to return a significant portion of our gifts to assist in his work.
Our gifts to our parish, to our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the
world are given in gratitude for what God has given us. A gift to the
Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministry
to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese.
The Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to
children, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. It
is also one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support for
Catholic schools in the Archdiocese.

Pastoral Care
Do you know someone in need of Pastoral
Care amongst our Old St. Pat’s community?
Please contact Bernadette Moore Gibson at
312.798.2389.
Gilbert was born in Sempringham,
England, into a wealthy family, but he followed
a path quite different from that expected of him
as the son of a Norman knight. Sent to France
for higher education, he decided to pursue
seminary studies.
He returned to England not yet ordained a priest,
and inherited several estates from his father. But
Gilbert avoided the easy life he could have led
under the circumstances. Instead he lived a
simple life at a parish, sharing as much as
possible with the poor. Following his ordination
to the priesthood, he served as parish priest at
Sempringham.
Among the congregation were seven young
women who had expressed to him their desire to
live in religious life. In response, Gilbert had a
house built for them adjacent to the Church.
There, they lived a strict life, but one that
attracted ever more numbers; eventually lay
sisters and lay brothers were added to work the
land. The religious order formed eventually
became known as the Gilbertines, though Gilbert
had hoped the Cistercians or some other existing
order would take on the responsibility of
establishing a rule of life for the new order.
The Gilbertines, the only religious order of
English origin founded during the Middle Ages,
continued to thrive. But the order came to an
end when King Henry VIII suppressed all
Catholic monasteries.
During the years, a special custom grew up in
the houses of the order called "the plate of the
Lord Jesus." The best portions of the dinner were
put on a special plate and shared with the poor,
reflecting Gilbert's lifelong concern for less
fortunate people. (Today’s Operation Rice Bowl,
in fact, echoes the habit of eating a simpler meal
and letting the difference in the grocery bill help
feed the hungry.) Throughout his life, he lived
simply, consumed little food and spent a good
portion of many nights in prayer. Despite the
rigors of such a life, he died at the ripe young
age of 106.
