What is esxRanger?
esxRanger performs hot backups of VMware ESX Server guest
operating systems for change control, archival and disaster
recovery. Additionally, esxRanger has the ability to perform
warm migrations of one or many VM's from one ESX Server to
another. This feature does not require a SAN and in many cases
users will not notice the migration. When using a SAN, the
migrate feature can be used to perform migrations of many VM's
from one SAN LUN to another.
Do I need to know scripting?
Using esxRanger, there is no need for complex scripting.
esxRanger runs from a central Windows Server and can be
scheduled to perform recurring online hot backups. esxRanger
may be run from a workstation as well and used for "point in
time" backups prior to a system change.
Should I use the CLI or GUI?
Most administrators will run the esxRanger GUI. However,
esxRanger CLI is an extremely flexible and powerful interface for
designing custom backup scripts using standard DOS or Windows
utilities.
Does esxRanger require Virtual Center?
esxRanger works without the need for Virtual Center. When you
set up esxRanger to perform recurring backups, we recommend
you use the "allregistered" option so no matter where you
VMotion a VM, esxRanger will be able to back it up. An esxRanger
version with direct Virtual Center support is forthcoming. This
future version will add enhanced VM tracking, group backups and
security control.
Are the esxRanger backups compressed?
esxRanger will compress these files to conserve space and send
them to a destination server of your choice. The compression
varies on the data that is in the Guest VM. A standard Windows
2003 VM with updates on a 6GB disk has about 2GB of used space
inside the guest. That compresses down to approximately 900MB
with esxRanger. You can then backup these compressed disk files
onto tape depending on your DR strategy.

Does esxRanger replace guest operating system backup
agents?
In some cases esxRanger will replace these agents. For instance,
Domain Controllers, DNS, DHCP, WINS, WEB Servers, Application
Servers, Print Servers and others may no longer need an
operating system backup agent. On VM's with fast changing user
data (File Servers, SQL, Exchange or Domino servers) you will
want to continue to run an operating system backup agent.
However, in this case, you will still backup these VM's regularly
with esxRanger for change control and DR purposes. After an
esxRanger restore, your user data would be restored from tape
or disk as normal.
Does esxRanger support Windows shares?
Yes. The destination server can be a Windows Server, an ESX
Servers VMFS, a locally mounted share or LUN on the ESX Server
Console OS, a Linux server, even a Windows XP workstation.
Novell, NAS, SAN, iSCSI, Fibre Channel are also supported if they
are seen by the Windows host running esxRanger.
