THE FACTS BEHIND OUR TECHNOLOGY CRANKSHAFT TORSIONAL VIBRATION On each ignition fire, the torque caused by combustion actually twists the metal of the crankshaft. Then, when combustion pressure is relieved the crankshaft metal rebounds. This sets the stage for torsional vibration. All factors of generating torque and crankshaft design affect the magnitude of torsional vibration. Repeated frequency spikes of torsional vibration place intense stress on the crankshaft causing metal fatigue. The crankshaft damper controls this destructive force. THE FLUIDAMPR SOLUTION A Fluidampr viscous crankshaft damper is made from three key parts: a CNC machined and balanced housing, a precision fit and balanced inertia ring inside and a thin layer of silicone between the two. Silicone is a thermally stable, premium material used to transfer energy and dissipate heat generated by damping torsional vibration. Stock rubber based crankshaft dampers are frequency sensitive and can only damp torsional vibration within a predetermined bandwidth limited by the stiffness of the rubber.
