Capital = Buenos Aires Language = Spanish Ethnic = 86% European President: Cristina Fernández de Kirchner Population: 40,091,359 Calling Code: +54 Culture Most Argentines are primarily of European descent, which separates them from other Latin American countries where European and Indian cultures are more mixed. Culturally and emotionally, Argentines often seem more European than Latin American. Argentinean Family Values The family is the centre of Argentine life with extended families still having prominence. The heads of powerful families command widespread respect, but with this comes a responsibility to care for others in terms of security, jobs, etc and to maintain personal and family honor. Honor is in all respects the be all and end all and it routinely affects day-to-day life at home, in the community and in business. Religion in Argentina The Argentine constitution guarantees religious freedom. Roman Catholicism acts as the official state religion. Other world religions, notably Islam, are gaining a foothold within the country during the last ten to fifteen years. Expressive Communication Style Argentines are on the whole open, blunt, and direct, yet are able to remain tactful and diplomatic. Argentines are a warm peoples and their unreservedness brings to the fore their passion and sentimentality. In addition they are close communicators physically so will often touch each other when speaking and maintain little physical distance between speakers. Cuisine Argentines are famous for their high protein diet, particularly beef. Grilled meat from the asado is a staple, with steak and beef ribs especially common. Chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), chinchulines (chitterlings), mollejas (sweetbread), and other parts of the animal are enjoyed. The club was founded on June 3, 1887 as a civil association, and is the oldest surviving football club still participating in the Argentine Football League. On August 4, 1905 when the fans decided to break away from Gimnasia To form Estudiantes de La Plata (host of OESA ITP 2011). Matches between the two clubs are referred to as the Clásico Platense. The first Clásico, Gimnasia won 1-0. A curiosity among the derbies occurred on April 5, 1992, when Gimnasia won over Estudiantes 1-0 at Estudiantes. At the time the goal was scored the Gimnasia fans erupted in celebration, the seismograph of the local Astronomical Observatory registered a low-intensity seismic event. The goal has been known ever since as “El gol del terremoto” (The earthquake goal). Gimnasia is nicknamed El Lobo (The Wolf) and they play their games at Estadio Juan Carlos Zerillo in La Plata, Argentina. Gimnasia was the home of Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Guillermo, nicknamed “el terrible” (the menace) began his career at GELP before heading off to Boca, Columbus Crew and back to Gimnasia. Guillermo also nicknamed, “Guille or Melli” (sort for “mellizo”, Spanish word for “twin”) has a twin brother, Gustavo, who also played pro. La Plata La Plata translates “The Silver” and is the capital city of the Province of Buenos Aires. The population is 574,369. La Plata was once call Eva Perón City from 1952-1955. The city is home to two soccer teams that play in the Argentine league: Estudiantes and Gimnasia. La Plata host one of the most renowned universities in Argentina, the National University of La Plata. Culture plays a major role in La Plata and is represented with a large amount of cultural center, theaters, museums, cinemas and libraries. Plaza Moreno is the most important tourist area located in the heart of the city, between streets 51 and 53. Buenos Aires Capital City of Argentina Paris of the South 2nd Largest City in South America 17th Largest City in the World The city is divided into 48 barrios or districts Birth Place of the Copa Libertadores Buenos Aires translates Good Air Colonia, Uruguay Colonia del Sacramento is the oldest town in Uruguay and was formerly the Portuguese Colónia do Sacramento. Colonia is located in southwestern Uruguay, by the Rio de la Plata, facing Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is renowned for its historic quarter which is a World Heritage Site. Puerto Madero Puerto Madero is in Buenos Aires, occupying a large portion of the Rio de la Plata riverbank and representing the latest architectural trends in the city. Puerto Madero’s historic red brick port structures are transformed into modern residential and business lofts. The area also has thriving restaurants, yachts and modern high-rise buildings. La Boca La Boca is a neighborhood of Buenos Aries with strong european flavor derived from it’s Italian settlers from Genoa. La Boca is famous for it’s bright colored buildings, pedestrian street, the Caminito where tango artists perform. More importantly La Boca is home of the famed club Boca Juniors and the stadium where they play, La Bombonera.
