CEO. Children’s Hunger Alliance is
an essential part of the community,
and I am thrilled to join the agency’s
team to help strengthen its impact
on childhood hunger and families
During the past six months, our programs touched many
children throughout Ohio. With your help, Children’s
Hunger Alliance expanded Ohio’s summer feeding program
to increase children’s access to nutritious foods. We also held
successful events in all five regions. Thank you for your
support in helping us feed hungry children in Ohio.

SPECIAL ATTENTION...
Mary Lou Langenhop retired as Children’s Hunger
Alliance’s president and CEO in September, having led
the agency since 2009.
“I am so proud to have been associated with this wonderful
organization and the great people who work at the agency
to ensure hungry children receive regular and nutritious
meals,” said Langenhop.
During the former CEO’s tenure, Langenhop expanded
the afterschool feeding program sponsorship to seven cities,
partnered with Learn4Life to bring summer learning loss
programs to summer meal sites, and increased the number
of breakfasts served to low-income children at schools across
Ohio by over 50,000. She also implemented an initiative
empowering middle school students to eat more nutritionally and be more physically active in school, expanded the
board governance structure to include five regional boards,
and worked with the hunger relief system aligning resources
to strengthen impact. Langenhop spent 30 years in the public human services system and made a lasting impact on
childhood hunger throughout Ohio at CHA.
CHILDREN’S CHAMPION
Fifth Third Bank and Children’s Hunger Alliance collaborated
on the Fifth Third Day “Feeding Our Community” carnival
on May 3rd to support Children’s Hunger Alliance programs
and Columbus summer feeding sites.
Fifth Third Bank of Central Ohio coordinated the event with
CHA, engaged its employees in the cause, and contributed
nearly $13,000 to the agency.
“We are excited to have Fifth Third Bank as a summer
feeding partner and appreciate their generosity,” said Michele
Gregory, senior vice president of development, Children’s
Hunger Alliance.
Children played at the Columbus Commons Park,
participating in physical activities, games, free rides on a
Merry-Go-Round, and educational stations. The children
also received a healthy snack. Along with monetary
donations, Fifth Third Bank employees donated food for
the Healthy Snack Station where kids were able to make
trail mix to take home. Over 300 children from afterschool
program sites participated in the Fifth Third Day festivities.

Fifth Third Bank raised their contributions selling $5
paper apples, representing CHA’s brand, in its Central and
Southern Ohio financial centers. Due to the fundraising
efforts in each of the bank’s affiliates, CHA was able to ensure
more children were fed nutritious meals during the summer
months. The goal of CHA’s five year initiative for Central
Ohio is to increase the number of children who participate
in summer feeding programs to 25% participation - it is
currently at almost 13% in Franklin County.
In addition to the Fifth Third Bank volunteers, several public
officials in Franklin County supported the event. Along
with the CEO of Fifth Third Bank of Central Ohio, Jordan
Miller, speakers in attendance included Commissioner John
O’Grady, Councilmember Zach M. Klein, and Recreation
and Parks Department Assistant Director Steve Aumiller.
CHA extends its thanks to Fifth Third Bank for their
donations, as well as the volunteers for helping CHA support
healthy minds and bodies across Ohio.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
HOORAH!
As Charlie Kozlesky arrives at Children’s Hunger Alliance
early each day at 7:00 am, he begins his day with working
to create opportunities to develop relationships and help
school districts learn more about breakfast programs and
how to set conditions right for children to learn.
WELCOME ABOARD:
Charlie transitioned from the Ohio Department of Education to new ventures 10 years ago to serve as senior vice
president of school and summer nutrition for Children’s
Hunger Alliance. He enjoys strategizing on implementation processes, as well as helping educators understand
the importance of childhood nutrition and how breakfast
programs can be self sustainable and not negatively impact
school budgets.
“I love my job and working with school districts to develop
breakfast programs that are financially sound. I enjoy seeing how different schools operate and the positive change
in school climate when they implement a breakfast program,” said Charlie.
He prioritizes each day by working with his team on which
school districts they plan to meet with across the state to
observe the school’s breakfast programs. Charlie and the
school and summer nutrition team often leave Columbus
at 4:00 am to meet with principals, business managers,
food service directors and other administrators throughout
Ohio to ensure children receive healthy meals for breakfast.
“Having relationships with educators and school officials is
imperative to develop successful breakfast programs. Phone
calls are secondary as knowing people and understanding
how they work and how their school system operates are
the most productive ways to help the schools feed hungry
children and be financially sound,” said Charlie.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES:
* Children’s Hunger Alliance’s public policy works to
maximize the use of existing state and local resources,
expand access to child nutrition programs, and increase
federal reimbursements to schools and other providers.
* Working with the Lt. Governor’s Office and the
Common Sense Initiative, CHA was able to obtain a clarification of Ohio’s rules around the use of school buses.
* The Departments of Agriculture and Health determined
that afterschool meal sites did not meet the definition of a
restaurant. Therefore, they will not be subject to the tough
health and safety inspection and equipment standards of
a restaurant.
Upon returning to Columbus after long travels, Charlie
relaxes by rejuvinating in ways many people long to understand: he runs 10 miles daily. He has also run ultra marathons to support Children’s Hospital for 36 years. Charlie
has even run 265 miles from Cleveland to Cincinnati (over
55 miles per day for 5 days) for homeless children’s education.
“My son also runs long-distance regularly, and my wife of
40 years is an educator who works in the school system,”
said Charlie. “The three of us do things to benefit families.
And I believe ‘If I can’t make a difference in children’s lives,
why work?’ ”

SUMMER EXPANSION PROGRAM INCREASES
ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS FOODS
The Franklin County Summer Meal Expansion Program is
an initiative to expand summer feeding throughout Franklin County. The goal of the program is to increase summer
meal participation in Franklin County to be among the
best in the country by 2017. In the future, CHA hopes to
replicate the program in other regions.
During the summer months, children lose access to the
regular, nutritious meals they need and receive during
the school year. Food pantries see unprecedented demand
from families with school-aged children in the summer. In
Franklin County alone, there are over 90,000 students that
may not have access to healthy foods when school is not in
session and could participate in the summer meal program.
In June, the Central Ohio region of Children’s Hunger Alliance held its summer feeding kick off at one of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department sites, Fedderson
Community Center. Summer meal flyers were distributed
throughout Franklin County informing them of the more
than 300 summer meal sites in the area.
“It was great to see the media and the mayor out there
creating awareness,” said CHA’s Franklin County Summer
Nutrition Manager Amanda Wampler. “I love that people
are creating awareness about the summer feeding program.”
Wampler works with community partners to determine
and implement best practices for sites, as well as site directors and other community partners to increase attendance and decrease barriers to participation at summer sites
throughout Franklin County. Barriers to participation in
summer meal programs include: location of summer meal
sites; transporting children to meal sites; lack of programming at sites; and lack of awareness.
A key contributor to the success of summer feeding
programs in Franklin County is Andrew Ginther, who
serves as vice president of community affairs and outreach
for Children’s Hunger Alliance. Ginther connects the agency to community partners to help establish additional sites
with more resources. The agency extends its thanks to all
community partners that helped expand the Ohio Summer
Foood Service Program in Franklin County.

SOUTHEAST OHIO REGION INCREASES ITS
IMPACT TO FEED HUNGRY CHILDREN
The Southeast Ohio region of Children’s Hunger Alliance
is increasing its impact in the community, as well as the
size of its regional board. The board is focusing on creating more collaborative efforts to eliminate duplicative processes in the area and create partnerships with other hunger
advocates. The Southeast region is dedicated to increasing
awareness and financial support for school breakfast,
summer nutrition, nutrition education, and sponsorship
of childcare providers.
The board recently decided to form additional committees
to manage and tap into expanding the region. The board
developed a public relations/community awareness committee, as well as a board engagement and development
committee.
The role of the public relations/community awareness committee is to identify civic organizations to approach, identify potential donors, and spread the word about Children’s
Hunger Alliance in Southeast Ohio. The board engagement
and development committee plans to recruite six to eight
additional board members. The new board members will
represent different geographic areas within the region. In
the future, the board will strive to include a member from
each county represented on the Southeast regional board to
better address the hunger crisis in Southeast Ohio.
AGENCY STRIKES OUT HUNGER ONE BUTTON
AT A TIME
When the newly-formed Junior Advisory Board of Children’s Hunger Alliance’s Northeast Ohio region held its first
meeting earlier this year, they were motivated by one goal: to
erase the negative stigma attached to the region’s afterschool
food program. In Cleveland’s twenty-one recreation centers
offering the program, many children declined meals because
they didn’t want to be associated with “needing free food.”
The Junior Advisory Board—a group of young professionals
in the Cleveland area—thought they could lend a hand in
re-branding afterschool meals by making it “cool.”
“We should get buttons,” said Keenan Williams, junior
board member and Z107.9 dee-jay. “Kids love buttons.”
Created by the designer behind popular streetwear clothing
brand Another Enemy, the design was simple: the agency’s
red apple logo used as a strikeout sign, with the abbreviated
“HNGR” in the middle. Not only did the buttons generate
enthusiasm among children at special events that “Pop Up”
at afterschool meal sites, but the buttons’ message, “Strike
Out Hunger” resonated with both staff and community
members as it invokes curiosity and conversation.
“The buttons intrigue people,” said Ainslee Johnson, junior
board chair. “If I’m wearing one, someone will ask what it
means, which starts the conversation about CHA’s work.”

meals,” said Huntley. For children without access to reliable,
healthy foods at home, this may be the only meal they are
getting between lunch at school and breakfast the next day.”
The Northwest Ohio region of Children’s Hunger Alliance
is proud of the rapid growth of the Afterschool Meal Program in the Toledo area. Approximately 56,000 meals were
provided to over 1,900 different children at the afterschool
program partner sites in this past year alone. In late 2011,
the office opened with only eight afterschool meal sites.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the Northwest Ohio region sponsored 33 afterschool meal sites in Toledo, which
represents a 40% increase in program sites in less than two
years.
Many afterschool programs spend money from their budget to feed hungry children. By partnering with Children’s
Hunger Alliance, afterschool programs are able to feed children healthy meals through the agency’s vendors and use
the money they are saving on operations.
“Through the afterschool meal program we can address the
hunger issues that are increasing and expanding here in the
Toledo area,” said Wendi Huntley, Northwest Ohio regional director, Children’s Hunger Alliance.
To make the most impact, the Northwest Ohio region has
a strong partnership with Toledo Public School District and
provides healthy options for children that are unavailable in
other programs. In fact, Huntley cites the partnership with
Toledo Public Schools as one of the most influential contributors to the success and growth in the region. With over
15,000 children at Toledo Public Schools qualifying for free
or reduced price meals, the need within the district is clear.
Many afterschool meal programs only provide snacks, some
of which do not contribute to the nutrition children need
to be healthy and thrive.
“We provide the opportunity for children to have nutritious

real tangible benefit to our partners - saving them money.”
Looking forward, the region plans to expand and increase
awareness of Children’s Hunger Alliance throughout the
Northwest Ohio community.
“We have a vision for the region - it is the local Toledo community members’ vision [to feed hungry kids],” said Fay.
The Northwest Ohio region has also expanded by adding several key individuals to the regional board who have
demonstrated a passion for helping children and addressing hunger. The wide range of individuals serving on the
board help connect the agency to the Toledo community at
large. Members include representatives from the following:
Andersons, Inc.; YMCA of Greater Toledo/JCC; Live Well
Greater Toledo; Fifth Third Bank; Block Communications/
Buckeye Cable; the Office of the Mayor, City of Toledo;
The Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office; Owens Illinois; as
well as a student from Bowling Green State University.

dance enjoyed jumping on inflatables, playing games with
volunteers, and were able to eat a healthy meal.
Children in the Southwest Ohio region enjoyed Summer
Field Days events in both Cincinnati and Dayton. Both
events engaged over 350 children in activities, such as face
painting, dancing, and playground games. The children collected goody bags that they were able to take home and
interacted with AmeriCorps members and Commissioner
Judy Dodge, who helped them have a day full of fun. Most
importantly, children received a healthy lunch.
“It was wonderful to see children eating, children who
wouldn’t have otherwise had a meal that day,” said Franklin
County Nutrition Manager Amanda Wampler, Children’s
Hunger Alliance. “You could see the relief on the parents’
faces.”
“The biggest impact was raising awareness about the availability of food for kids during the summer months through
various media outlets,” said Southwest Ohio Regional
Director Holly Molony, Children’s Hunger Alliance.
The Northwest Ohio region held a Hunger Action Month
media event on September 18 to showcase the issue of
childhood hunger in Toledo and how the afterschool meal
programs impacts the community year-round. Toledo
Deputy Mayor Steve Herwat and representatives from the
following organizations participated in the event commemorating Hunger Action Month: Children’s Hunger Alliance,
ProMedica, Toledo Public Schools, YMCA, and United
Way of Greater Toledo.
“We wanted to pull together our partners and show the
collaborative effort in the afterschool work as it relates to
the community,” said Northwest Ohio Regional Director
Wendi Huntley, Children’s Hunger Alliance.
The Central Ohio region was a sponsor of Red, White &
Boom to create awareness about Ohio’s Summer Food Service Program and inform caretakers of the more than 300
summer meal sites in Franklin County. Children in atten-

event at Fred Beekman Park in Columbus, where children
enjoyed outdoor field games, face painting, a DJ, and arts
and crafts. Children were able to eat a nutritious lunch, provided by Columbus Department of Parks and Recreation,
and enjoyed goody bags filled with jump ropes, Frisbees,
and water bottles to encourage active lifestyles.
“It was great seeing the interactions between volunteers and
kids,” said Amy Souders, AmeriCorps program manager,
Children’s Hunger Alliance. “The volunteers really take it
upon themselves to make the children’s day enjoyable.”
The annual Family Festival in northeast Ohio was held at
Luke Easter Park to recognize the outstanding home childcare providers in Cleveland. Attractions included a booth
featuring fresh fruit from Edible Arrangements, a petting
zoo, and the Cleveland Fire Department’s Smokehouse,
a mobile unit that teaches children about fire safety. The
northeast Ohio region held a kindergarten promotion ceremony at the festival for children scheduled to attend kindergarten in the fall. The little graduates wore caps and gowns
and received book bags containing school supplies for the
upcoming school year.
Each summer event celebrated children and increased
awareness about Ohio summer meal programs and CHA.

AGENCY, OHIO LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
PARTNER ON COMMON SENSE INITIATIVE
The Common Sense Initiative (CSI Ohio) reviews regulatory systems in Ohio to eliminate rules that serve as obstacles to state goals. Children’s Hunger Alliance, the Office of
Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor, and other organizations
partnered to address two rules that could cause barriers
to children in Ohio receiving meals through the federally
sponsored Child Nutrition Program.
The first barrier was afterschool and summer meal sites
were to be inspected as though they were restaurants. This
meant that sites would need to purchase equipment, such
as three-compartment sinks and commercial grade refrigerators. In many cases, the equipment was not needed as
food was neither prepared nor stored on-site.
JCPenney Logistics Center leadership team presented
a check to Children’s Hunger Alliance for $8,601.15.
The funds were generously donated by the company’s employees during their recent operation feed
campaign.
The donation is a significant increase from their support through the same campaign in 2012 where
JCPenney Logistics Center donated $4,000. The difference, according to Tarah Torrez, is due to one of the
key campaign leaders and a member of the Customer
Care Center leadership team who increased marketing efforts of the campaign to the entire staff by using incentives and “healthy competition” to motivate
teams to raise more money than their colleagues.
The second barrier was buses were not permitted to serve
as mobile meal sites. Utilizing buses as mobile sites would
be very helpful for children who are located too far from a
meal site or cannot safely walk to a site alone.
Children’s Hunger Alliance collaborated with the Office of
the Lt. Governor regarding CSI Ohio. The work between
the Office of the Lt. Governor and partnering organizations, including Children’s Hunger Alliance, resulted in a
clarification in the rules stating afterschool and summer
meal sites should not be inspected as restaurants. In addition, children are now permitted to eat on a school bus,
and buses are able to either transport children to a meal
program or transport meals to children.
“I am very pleased that Lt. Governor Mary Taylor worked
closely with us to resolve these two issues. Her dedication
to children is tremendous. She even had the opportunity to
come out and visit one of the mobile meal sites and see the
impact her work truly had,” said Charlie Kozlesky, senior
vice president of school and summer nutrition, Children’s
Hunger Alliance.
