Dear Reader: Assalamo Alaikum: The issue of CITI-Zine for the months of March and April 2016 is before your eyes. We had tremendous engagements during this th period. The major event of 8 Convocation was held in March 2016 and thanks to Patron of University Engr. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra Governor KP for his kindness to confer degrees to more than 1000 graduates and Gold medal to 48 graduates. The intensive Schedule of Board of Studies of various department has certainly improved the contents and curriculum of various programs based on the feedback from faculty and industry etc. This will also improve the accreditation category of various programs. The academic performance review process has been intensified and extended counseling has been provided to weak and non-serious students. Their parents are also involved in the process and it is expected that such students will be more serious. Let me clarify that no compromise on quality and attendance can be tolerated. Collaboration and partnership of CUSIT has been developed with Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, (SECP) Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Rozee.pk, London School of Economics, Centre of Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE) Islamabad, Institute of Engineers, Telenor Pakistan, Ripah International University, Abdul Wali Khan University, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University etc. The Spring sports Festival and active participation of students and staff in the events added colors to the Campus. The students’ study tour and recreational trips provided them opportunities to learn from visiting various mega projects and historical places/cities. At the same time intensive Internship Program for th th the 6 and 8 Semester students has been developed Under the Private Chartered Universities Forum (PCUF) mega IT events, Sports Gala and Job Fair have been planned in 2016 under the Chairman PCUF Mr. Muhammad Sabur Sethi and it’s expected that the teams of CUSIT students will excel in various events as per their traditions. Lastly CUSIT has announced “ Second International Conference on Emerging Trends in Engineering Management and Sciences (ICETEMS-2) to be held on Dec 28-30,2016 in partnership with East Carolina University, Auburn University USA and Institute of th Engineers Pakistan. CUSIT is also partner in arranging 9 International Conference on Construction In Twenty First Century (CITC-9) to be held in March 2017 at Jameirah Hilton Dubai (www.citcglobal.com). The faculty and graduate students are expected to contribute their research work to the conference. I hope that we have set our direction to achieve excellence and international accreditation. Mr. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa graced the occasion as an honorable Chief Guest and conferred degrees on graduating students of graduate and post graduate programs. Mr. Mohammad Zahoor Sethi, Founder / Chairman (PMEI), Mr. Mohammad Sabur Sethi, President CUSIT, Engr. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor of CUSIT, Members of Board of Governors (BoG), Dean, Head of different Departments, Admin / Faculty members of CUSIT and other distinguished guest were present at the occasion. Engr. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor of CUSIT expressed his gratitude to The Honorable Governor of KPK Mr. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra for gracing the occasion. In his welcome address he highlighted his role and achievements of the City University in the uplift of the education sectors in Pakistan. While congratulating all the degree graduators and gold modelers for their achievements Vice Chancellor convey in his message: “The City University of Science and Information Technology, education has equipped you with knowledge, wisdom & confidence therefore you all should make a good use of these abilities to bring City University one of the top 10 universities in next 5 years.” Mr. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, the Honorable Chief Guest congratulate and presented his heartily thanks to Mr. Mohammad Zahoor Sethi, Founder / Chairman (PMEI), Mr. Mohammad Sabur Sethi, President CUSIT, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Asrar Khattak, Vice President of CUSIT, Engr. He also included their sincerity & commitment towards professionalism and contributes to national advancement. In his presentation, the Chief Engineer, explained various scenarios of development of the Mangla Dam project, right from its inception in 1959 to the development and raising in 2012. He also stressed over construction of more retention dams in Pakistan particularly Munda Dam and Bhoonji Dam as such dams can store the flood waters for later irrigation use and hydel-generation. The students visited various parts of the dam, including power house, turbines, spillways, control room, dam structure etc. The students also visited the museum and Fort at the top of the dam, which belongs to 2 BC. While thanking the Chief Engineer, VC CUSIT emphasized over the professional development of the students and developing rational and innovative thinking, which is very important for the professional grooming. He also motivated the students to abreast for the leading role at the national assets of Pakistan. The students took keen interest in various parts of the Dam and Hydel generation system, Later they also visited Mirpur AJ&K, which is about 12KM from Mangla Dam. 15 | P a g e CUSIT Admin Trip to Nathia-Gali CUSIT admin group tour to one of the most exotic place in Pakistan, known as Nathia-Gali. Nathia-Gali is an Heaven on Earth serves as home to all major wildlife. The Admin group of CUSIT went for 3 days and 2 nights trip to this amazing place by road.First of all,travelling in groups or with company is less time consuming.People in groups can plan before travelling to a particular palce. Each member of the group can search for restaurants, amusement parks and beaches and it saves time.They can bring some food like sandwiches ,pizzas , pasteries to share with others.Meeting new people and discussing about their experiences in getaways helps them in better understanding. Annual Day Celebrations of PMDC at City University The 19th Annual Day Celebrations of Peshawar Model Degree Colleges was held at City University Peshawar. The students and faculty from MPDCs Dalazak Road, Hayatabad and Mardan participated. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah VC City University was the Chief guest. The City University has also arranged Career Counseling Counters and the young faculty of various departments provided basic information about various programs. The projects of the students of Comp Sc and IT department of City University were also displayed. The Director Colleges S.Attaullah Shah welcome the guests and appreciated the handwork of the faculty and students. He also gave details of faculty various programs and facilities available at City University for the students, 16 | P a g e which is one of the best institutions in the KP. Prof. Khushdil Khan presented annual report of PMDCs. Later students presented various items like National Songs Competition, Comedy skits, debates, folk dances etc. to amuse the audience. The Chief guest and others appreciated their hard work and preparations. At the end trophies, certificates, Gold medals were awarded to the outstanding students and faculty. The Chief guest Prof. Attaullah Shah appreciated the hard work of the students, faculty and organizers. He also announced two Gold Medals i.e. City University President Gold Medal and Vice Chancellor's Gold Medal for students toping Pre-Medical and Pre-Engg groups. He also announced that one Gold medal will be awarded to best Faculty. These Gold Medals will be awarded in the Annual Convocation after approval of the BoG. Director Colleges presented Shield to the Chief guest, where Students Chief Editor of the PMDC Newsletter Mr. Bilal Sethi presented the latest volume to the VC and Director. The function finished with the prayers for the prosperity peace and success of the students, faculty, PMDCs, City University and country. The students of PMDCs took keen interest in the programs and facilities of the City University. MOU signed between City University & SECP for Investor's Education MOU was signed between City University of Science and IT and Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) for investors education. VC City University Prof. Attaullah Shah and Mr.AkifSaeed Commissioner SECP signed the MoUs. Vice Chancellors of Hamdard University Karachi, Fatma Jinnah Women University, UET Taxila and Director IM Sciences were also present. Under the MOU the SECP and Universities will collaborate for creating awareness and conducting reaseach in the investor education. The VC University informed the participants that University has established City University Consultancy and Research Centre at Islamabad to connect the graduates with job market, Academia industry linkages and Entrepreneurship education. He assured SECP that City University will provide all kinds of supports for the successful implementation of MOU. Prof Jehanzeb Dean Faculties Mr.SohrabArshadMr.SaqibChohan and Mr.MudassarArif also attended from City University. 17 | P a g e Students of Computer Science & IT department presented their projects The students and faculty of the Comp Sc and IT departments presented their projects on Traffic simulation and control at the PMDCs Annual Day celebrations held at City University Peshawar. The participants took keen interest in the projects and appreciated the innovative ideas of the students. The Sensor based Traffic Simulation Model can record the traffic density in the lanes and actuate the signals and their durations accordingly. The Chief guest VC City University Prof. Attaullah Shah, informed that the project will be shared with the DIG traffic Peshawar and Islamabad for its full scale development to monitor and control traffic. He advised the Director Admin and Coordinator to develop the prototype of the model so that it is installed at some square in the city with the Patronage of City University. This can later be patented as our first product in the market. He encouraged the students and faculty to explore such innovative ideas and convert these to meaningful products for the welfare of society. University funding is available to such projects under Business Incubation of the University which has been already approved by the President City University Mr. SaburSethi. Meeting for Rozee.pk Job Fair 2016 City University is partnering with Rozee.pk for mega job fair at PC hotel Peshawar on April 10,2016. The City University will establish information counter. A review meeting was held which was chaired by VC Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah to check the preparations for the job fair so that the graduates and students of 7th and 8th Semesters can actively participate in the Job Fair and grab slots. CUSIT Alumni, graduates, Students of 7th and 8th Semester are advised to collect the CV format from CUSIT website and send their updated CVs at [email protected] immediately. Rozee.pk is offering 40,000 jobs slots at the Job Fair. City University desires that at least 200 graduates of CUSIT must grab slots in these positions 18 | P a g e Synopsis Workshops of MS Mathematics students held at CUSIT To present their research proposals and topics before the external reviewers, the 12 MS Mathematics students successfully presented their proposed research topics at the Audiorium CUSIT. Dr. TazaGul and Dr. Arshad Ali were the external reviewers/expert, whereas the HoD department Dr. Farhad Ali was internal reviewer/facilitator. Vice Chancellor Prof. Attaullah Shah also joined the first session and took keen interest in the research topics. He appreciated the hard work of the department and expected that at least one Impact Journal paper will be developed from each research. He shared with the audience that the Mathematics department is presently doing great job by mentoring their students for quality and innovative research. They have stringently followed the Research Calendar of MS program and that's why their graduates will complete their studies well in time, which must be the good practice for other to follow.He emphasized over the interdisciplinary research by Engineering, Management and Mathematics departments. VC of CUSIT Visits to PMS Islamabad The Peshawar Model School Islamabad started its new session 2016today. VC City University Prof Dr Attaullah Shah paid a courtesy visit to the school and met with Mr. Muhammad Kashif Director PMS and appreciated the hard work of his team. The PMS Islamabad branch was established in 2014. Director School shared with VC the future plans of PMS and PMDCs and its extension. VC also presented the University Sovinier to Director and prayed for their success and prosperity to discharge their holistic mission of educating the young generation. The school is located at 85 Ahmad Faraz Road F-10/1 Islamabad, providing quality education to its students with the traditional core values and zeal of Peshawar Model Educational Institutes (PMEIs) 19 | P a g e Collaboration between City University & London School Of Economics A team of students from London School of Economics and Bath University UK visited City University of Science and IT for exploring collaboration between these institutions at the students and faculty levels. Mr. Jiaming led the team. Mr. Jiaming also showed in interest for collaboration of the Students' societies of CUSIT and China Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) UK. They had detailed meeting with the President CUSIT Mr. SaburSethi, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, faculty of Management and Economics and other staff. The areas of joint collaborations which were discussed with the delegates included, Student and Faculty Exchange, Training and development of Faculty, Research partnership, Online education and trainings and joint Volunteer programs. The Vice Chancellor presented the University Souvenir to Mr. Jiaming and his team. He also presented gift to the VC.Mr. Abdullah Sethi and Mr. SannanSethi also accompanied the delegates. Meeting Awareness of Govt. Regulations on Tobacco Free Campuses City University will enforce the Law of Tobacco Free Campus in true spirit. A meeting was held today in CUSIT which was attended by Students' Societies Coordinator Mr. Zoonoonrain, Mr. ZafarIqbal, Mr. M.Hannan, Mr. Masoor and Mr. TaifoorZareen etc. and chaired by Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah VC CUSIT. He informed that according to Law, University Campus has to be Tobacco Free and no one can be allowed to smoke inside the Campus. The Vice Chancellor has been declared as Authorized Officer by the HEC for implementation of the Law. VC advised the participants to develop effective promotion campaign to make the students and faculty aware about the detrimental effects of smoking. In this context banners, videos and 20 | P a g e other promotion material may be displayed in the first phase. Lectures series of some prominent cancer specialists, medical specialist will be arranged. Later once the awareness is created, full enforcement of the law will be implemented. The Vice Chancellor has personally requested all faculty, staff and students to refrain from smoking and particularly at the Campus. The MIS department was advised to develop individual pages for faculty to provide links to the students for the E-resources. He shared with the participants, that he has created virtual Google Class room for the students, where they can access, comment, ask questions and submit assignments. He advised MIS department to train the faculty to provide such virtual facilities to students, so that they can benefit from the modern technologies and resources. A 360 degree learning approach may be adopted. Furthermore, CUSIT, being member of UN Academic Impact (UNAI) will also arrange activities relating the Charter of UN such as poverty alleviation, higher education for females, sustainability, Water and Earth Conservation. He advised the team to develop a comprehensive Plan for the same. Use of Internet for An awareness Seminar was held today at the Auditorium CUSIT on " Online Harassment and Safe and Secured Use of Internet for Females" with the collaboration of Women Entrepreneurship Wing and Digital Rights Foundation. The Seminar was attended by large number of female students of CUSIT. The lectures were delivered by Ms. Ooslba, Ms. Luavut and Mr. Kamran Ali who shared important information about the digital harassment and securing the personal data of the users. They shared with the audience, that how they can get help from various organizations in case of any harassment through internet and Cellphones. Speaking at the occasion, the VC CUSIT, Prof.Dr. Attaullah Shah informed that modern technologies including ICT has transformed the lives and all sectors of life have been positively affected by these technologies. However handful of people are abusing these technologies for harassment of the people particularly females. He advised the participants to follow the instructions and guidelines given in the lectures and secure their domains and personal information from such unethical intruders. He also thanked the delegates and speakers to arrange the awareness session for the students. Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb Dean of Faculties, MsSaimaBano, Miss Najla and miss Samra also participated. 21 | P a g e Centre Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE) Islamabad, is pioneering institution in the education and research of Engineering Management programs. VC City University Peshawar Prof. Dr. AttaullahShah, has been the faculty and member of Board of Studies of the CASE for Engineering and Construction Management programs. The Board of Studies Meeting of the department was held on April 7,2016 and Dr. Shah attended as convener of the Construction Management Cluster of the program. Earlier he had a detailed meeting with the Head of Department of Engineering Management Dr. Ali Ahsan about the expected collaboration and partnership between the two institutions. He also presented University Souvenir to the Dr. Ahsan. The HoD was informed that City University has been focusing extensively on research and collaboration with national and international institutions of high repute, in the areas of joint research, faculty development, students exchange and joint research publications. He also showed his interest to develop joint research projects with CASE in the areas of Engineering and Construction Management. Dr. Ahsan appreciated the hard work and CUSIT team and assured all kinds of support to the VC. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah also informed the participants about the City University Consultancy Services and Research Centre (CU-CSR) and invited them to visit the Centre. CU-CSR has been established to develop academia industry linkages, placement of CUSIT graduates and connecting them with perspective employers and developing linkages of the CUSIT with national and international institutions for research collaboration and Executive Development. 22 | P a g e for Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah VC City University delivered Keynote Speech on “Procurement Process and PEC bidding Documents” at the 18th Course on Contract Management at “Pakistan Project Management Institute (PPMI) Islamabad, a subsidiary department of Planning Commission of Pakistan. The course was attended by about 30 senior officers from various departments and institutions engaged with project. The students Graduates and Alumni of City University and Peshawar Model Degree Colleges took active part in mega job fair arranged at PC Pesh by Rozee.Pk. CSUIT was a partner for the Job Fair. The stall of the CUSIT was beautifully adorned with the pics of oustanding graduates and programs offered by CUSIT. Big number of graduates visited CUSIT stall and took interest in various job opportunities provided at CUSIT and PMDCs. Registrar Amjad Ali, Mr.SaqibChohan and Mr.Mudassar from CU-CSR Islamabad and other staff of CUSIT and PMDCs as well as students from different student societies actively participated in the Job fair. About 40 companies had installed their booth. VC City University Prof. Dr.Attaullah Shah also visited the job fair and met with the staff and students at City Univ and PMDC stall and appreciated their hard work. He also met with Mr.Monis and Mr. AmerAman from Rozee.Pk and welcomes them to Peshawar. 23 | P a g e Prof. Attaullah Shah delivered talk at PEC arranged One Day Seminar on "Entrepreneurship and Construction Supervision at APCOMS. To develop the capacity of the young Engineers towards Engineering Entrepreneurship and Construction Supervision License, PEC has started series of Seminars throughout the country. One such Seminar was held at Army Public School of Management Sciences (APCOMS) Rawalpindi Cantt. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah was the keynote speaker. The event was attended by around 200 young Engineers from Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The Seminar was comprised of three session on interdiction to Entrepreneurship, Ideas generation and Exploiting new Business Opportunities and principles of Construction Management and Site supervision. Secretary IEP Islamabad and member PEC Governing Body Engr. Shfiq Ur Rahman was the chief guest at the occasion. Engr. AbdurRahman from CPD section of PEC coordinated the workshop. Under this program, PEC has planned to develop the capacity of 5000 young Engineers every year and deploy them with Category C-5 and C-6 Contractors as Construction Site Supervision Engineer. The participants took keen interest in the Seminar. The first of this kind Seminar at KP was held at City University as well, wherein about 400 young Engineers participated. ShafiqurRahman, Deputy Registrar PEC Engr. A Rahman and other members of PEC visited the City University Consultancy Services and Research (CU-CSR) Islamabad. They were received by VC City University Prof. Attaullah Shah and Mr. SaqibChohan Team Leader CU-CSR. Mr. Michael emphasized over the courage to start the new enterprises of young graduates, develop their teams and compete at global levels. He also stressed on mainstreaming the females of the society for economic development of the nation. While sharing his experience at Pakistan and interaction with youth, he categorically informed that it is a great country and I can see great future of this country as one of the Economic Leader in the region in next ten years. The youth of Pakistan are intelligent, dynamic, forthcoming and creative, which make them best candidates for becoming leading Entrepreneurship. He showed his keen interest for long term partnership with CUSIT. The VC CUSIT, while thanking the CEO Telenor, appreciated his humble and friendly nature, dynamic leadership and courtesy. Collaboration between EDI and for Startup Boot Camp during Summer Collaboration between Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) and for Startup Boot Camp during Summer 2016. Entrepreneurship Education of youth is essentially required to develop the young graduates for their capacity building towards new Startups. The CEO EDI Mr. Usman Ahmad and VC City University of Science and IT had a detailed meeting for starting Boot camp during Summer 2016. Both the Institutions have agreed to pool their resources for initiating such Boots Camps throughout KP. The curriculum of the training was discussed and finalized. Renowned Entrepreneurs from KP and Pakistan will be engaged for teaching and sharing their experience. Mr. Zunnorain and Mr. SohrabArshad from Management Sciences department participated. CEO EDI assured that the students of CUSIT who couldn't get proper attention during Startup Expo 2016 at Convention Centre will be compensated and very soon an event of this kind will be arranged at CUSIT which will be sponsored by EDI. Counseling with the Weak students' parents started VC CUSIT will support the Pakistan Red Crescent Society Initiatives for Disaster Management City University of Science and IT is providing regular City University of Science and IT is actively involved in counseling and mentoring to all students for their academic improvement. In this context intensive counseling sessions have been started with the weak students and their parents at the mid semester level under the guidance of Vice Chancellor. The first session was held with the parents of Civil and Electrical Engineering students today. The attendance performance and academic performance of such students was discussed in the presence of their parents, Students Support Officer and Department Coordinators. The parents were apprised about the academic performance of their wards. It has been observed that the academic performance of students has improved with the intensive counseling started from last semester involving the parents. The department Coordinators were advised to keep posted the parents about the academically weak students for their timely intervention. The parents appreciated the role of VC and his team for improvement and mentoring of the students. According to the Rules of HEC/PEC and CUSIT, a student’s having less than 75% attendance is not allowed in the final exam. Similarly a student who fails to achieve 2 CGPA by third semester is dropped from the Roll of University. 28 | P a g e the capacity building of its students and staff for emergency and disaster management. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah informed that as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), CUSIT is engaged with society through social activities like Healthcare Unit, Part of E-Peshawar project. CUSIT would become active partner with Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in its awareness program for Emergency and Disaster Response and Management. In this context PRCS will train 50 students volunteers of CUSIT in April,2016. In May 2016, the training of faculty from Peshawar Model Degree College Hayatabad (males) and Peshawar Model Degree College for Girls Dalazak Road ( females) will be trained. The VC CUSIT thanked the District Officer PRCS and proposed to ink MoU between the two institutions to engage the students and faculty on long term basis in the various activities and programs of PRCS. The conference was jointly organized by Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan and Shaheed Benazir Women University Peshawar. Perviaz Butt (NI,SI,HI) Former Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission delivered talk on " Indigenous Industrialization" at IEP The real success of the mega projects of Pakistan Energy Commission like KANUPP, CHUSHNUPP was possible due to better team work, commitment of Engineers and adopting indigenous solutions to the problems faced. Former Chairman PAEC Engr. Pervaiz Butt informed the participants at the " Lecture on Indigenous Industrialization Why the Slow Down" at Institute of Engineers Islamabad. It was of one of CPD series of Lectures. In his welcome note, Engr. Hafiz EhsanQazi highlighted the achievements of Engr. Butt and his services for the nation at his various important roles and positions. Engr. The speaker gave a detailed note of the industrial developments during 1950's and 1960's. However this development was continued to lack of commitment from successive Govts. He advised the CoE to arrange regular coaching for the faculty for objective and just assessment and evaluation. He appreciated the role of CoE and his team. Later VC visited the MIS and discussed with the team, various online facilities at the section. Engineering professions always require the use of theoretical knowledge for the field practice. Lab experiments provide such chances to students. This was shared by the VC during inspection of newly established Labs of Civil Engineering Program. He appreciated the close coordination between DirAdmn and HoD and his staff for developing good quality equipment and Labs, which will be used to achieve the desired objectives of quality education and research. The Vice Chancellor City University Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah also participated the Day 2 session and appreciated the students of CUSIT for their active participation. The CUSIT students effectively engaged with the new Startups, took part in various mentoring sessions and facilitated the organizers of the event EDI in the event. The VC City University had detailed discussion with the Telenor Pakistan CEO Michael Foley on potential collaboration between the TELENOR and CUSIT in the areas of Telecom Services, Computer Telephony and Marketing of Telecom Services. Merely one training is not sufficient to get the long term benefits of Disaster and Emergency Management capacity. The training portfolio of PRCS include Disaster Management Training for Youth, Emergency Response Trainings, Blood Donation, Need based Institutional Contingency Plan etc. VC informed that a group of 50 student Volunteers have been identified for first batch of training, followed by faculty trainings from PMDC.It was proposed that formal MoU will be signed on May 13,2016. The two institutions will start short courses and diploma programs on Disaster Management. PRCS will provide the resource persons and training material for the course participants. VC CUSIT emphasized that Pakistan is faced with multitude of Natural and Man-made Disasters and there is a need to develop proactive plans and capacity of people at all levels to face these challenges. In collaboration with CHRS Islamabad (Pakistan Chapter), CU-CSR Islamabad organized a Faculty Training Session for CUSIT Faculties at its office in Islamabad on " Assessment and Career Counseling of Students" on Friday, 29 April, 2016. CEO of CHRS (Pakistan Chapter) was also present in the session and lead the proceedings decently. All present appreciated the effort and suggested a Phase-II of this session at CUSIT Peshawar. Participation and input of all faculties was highly appreciated by the trainer and all present, it was resolved to soon meet again in Peshawar for run-two of this activity.
