Another summer comes to an end. I was discussing this with a
friend the other day whether or not this is related to getting older.
Either way, the passing of another summer ushers in the fall
and then soon after another winter season follows. With some
luck, it will follow on with the past two seasons’ record snowfall.
I’ve heard though that overall skier visits were down in 2015 because folks
down south were buried in the white stuff and couldn’t make their way north
to take advantage of the epic conditions we were enjoying.
I’m not sure if you’ve heard that the Mittersill project over at Cannon Mtn.
has moved into high gear. The cooperative effort among the state of New
Hampshire, Cannon Mtn. and the Franconia Ski Club have joined forces
to create what will arguably be two world class ski hills. Baron’s Run, the
Super G and GS trail, had snowmaking installed this summer and the Taft
slalom trail was cleared and stumped as well, though snowmaking and the
new T-Bar surface lift will not be installed until next spring.
This project will bring many new possibilities for ski racing in New Hampshire
and the region. Foremost, it provides a much needed SG trail to the state
that can be considered one of the best in the east incorporating exciting
pitches, side hill, compression and rolls that will present challenges to the
best skiers. Add to that a world class GS hill and you have a one two punch
that will be hard to beat anywhere. Next up is the Taft slalom at Mittersill,
an imposing site as you look up the hill, ninety meters wide at its narrow
point. As you can see, these two venues combine to create this world class
training and racing site.
To top this all off, the USSA named Cannon/Mittersill a US Ski Team Training
site, one of only four in the country along with Mammoth, Sun Valley
and Copper. There will be training only this year on Baron’s with racing
scheduled on both for the 2016-2017 season. If you’re skiing at Cannon
this year, stop by Mittersill and take a few turns down Baron’s!
On behalf of the NHARA BOT, I would like to take the opportunity to thank
the Ski Area Operators of New Hampshire for their continued support of ski
racing in New Hampshire. It is important to mention this because without
their support, we would not be able to enjoy our sport of ski racing. Please
remember when attending races that we are guests at the resorts, be
respectful toward all their employees, be mindful of the other guests that
we share the lodge with and pick up your trash. Thanks you in advance

Ski racing is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. And while competition puts one
skier against the field; the real competition is between the athletes and themselves. An athlete’s best
run is a personal achievement - it does not change in respect to the competition. Producing your best
run is a matter of confidence, preparation and style. At Blizzard and Tecnica we take an active role
in improving the mental appraoch of our athletes. While coaches focus on technique and tactics,
and parents focus on parenting, we are an outside voice ready to talk about the elephant in every

NHARA
GENERAL INFORMATION
The New Hampshire Alpine Racing Association is a voluntary NH corporation
whose purposes are:
1. To promote alpine racing programs in the interests of New Hampshire
competitors.
2. To coordinate NH alpine programs with those of the USSA/Eastern
Region and the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS).
3. To assist New Hampshire competitors; and encourage others to make
available facilities, financial aid and other support, thus enabling
racers to achieve their full potential including the opportunity to
participate and succeed in State, National and International
competition.
4. To cooperate closely with vital elements of the alpine ski industry in
New Hampshire for the promotion of the sport and for the benefit of
New Hampshire competitors.
5. To cooperate with N.H. Ski Areas.
NHARA is franchised by USSA to administer its programs within New
Hampshire, to wit:
1. To arrange and confirm a suitable race schedule for all levels of
competition.
2. To determine and administer procedures for the selection of racers to fill New Hampshire quotas at major Eastern invitational events.
3. To encourage the growth and development of strong, productive local training programs, which are the foundation of ski racing.
4. To coordinate Eastern and USSA programs with the local training
programs of ski clubs, academies, schools and colleges.
5. To participate in the governance of USSA in administration and
policy making
NHARA is governed by an up to 26 member Board of Trustees, with an
Executive Committee of 9. Trustees are elected annually. The Board
appoints several committee heads to represent the various state interests
in alpine ski racing. The Board meets regularly. Meetings are open to all
members. The NHARA Annual Meeting will be held the first Monday in June
unless otherwise noted on the NHARA website.
NHARA membership is open to anyone with a bona-fide interest in alpine
ski racing in New Hampshire upon payment of annual dues. Members of
the Board of Trustees must also be members of USSA.

ALPINE OFFICIALS
NHARA administers this USSA program in New Hampshire. A USSA
sanctioned race must be properly supervised to gain recognition and
have the results recorded. It is NHARA’s responsibility to send a Technical
Delegate (TD) to supervise each USSA sanctioned race. The TD and other
officials are impartial “umpires”.

The NHARA Alpine Officials Committee sponsors several clinics open
to anyone interested in learning more about organizing or officiating at
ski races. It should be considered a requirement for all race organizers
and crews to attend at least one officials’ clinic each year. We encourage
Officials to join USSA - Official’s Membership/License is $60.00

Participation in clinics and certification programs.
Jury members, Chief of Course, and Course setters MUST be current
members of USSA or the event liability insurance is in jeopardy.
Sign up early! Background screening, a recent requirement of the liability
insurance carrier, must be complete and not “pending”. This screening
addresses felony convictions, drug & alcohol offenses and offenses
involving improper actions towards children. Personal primary health
insurance is required. It may take as long as two weeks to become a valid
USSA member eligible to be on the Jury, Chief of Course or a Course
Setter. Therefore, you will not be able to join USSA at Race Registration.
Coaches/officials should submit a record of their own activity to Ted
Newman immediately following the end of the season to receive credit
for upgrading.
VOLUNTEERS
Most NHARA races require between 35-40 volunteer workers
to be run safely and efficiently. Speed events require more. Our
member clubs welcome parents and friends who are traveling
from other mountains to volunteer to work at NHARA races.
Volunteers who work a race at another mountain receive a voucher for a
day of free skiing based on the policy of the mountain for race workers.

RACE JURY
The Race Jury is charged with making sure that the race is safe, fair and
legal. Service on the Jury is an opportunity to influence the conduct of the
race positively. All members of the Jury must be members of USSA.
RACE JURY: Technical Delegate (TD) Chairman, Referee, Chief of Race. Assistant Referee is added for Speed Events only.
The TECHNICAL DELEGATE is a trained volunteer, assigned by the
NHARA Chairman of Alpine Officials. Final responsibility for all aspects of
the race rests with this person. The other members of the Jury must abide
by his/her decision in matters of safety. All other rulings are by a majority
of the Jury; in case of a tie, the TD’s vote prevails.
The REFEREE’s special responsibilities include:
1. Meet with the Jury before the race.
2. Inspect the course. He has the right to change the course if he judges it to be unsafe or illegal by taking out or adding gates. If he/
she alone inspected the course, his/her decision is final, although the course setter must be informed of any changes.
3. Supervise training.
4. Receive the report of the forerunners and declare that the race may start or not.
5. Observe the race and be ready to interrupt if necessary.
6. Authorize re-runs.
7. Receive reports of the Start Referee, Finish Referee & Chief
Gatekeeper.
8. Check for disqualifications and post on the Official Score Board with the time and his signature.
9. Meet with the Jury to consider protests.
The Referee presents any concerns with the course or other areas to the
Jury. The Race Jury and Team Captains will meet in the Finish area
30 min before the Start of ALL NHARA races This is a USSA mandate
because of insurance. All members of the Jury must respect the decisions
of the Technical Delegate, especially in matters concerning safety. A
dissenting report may be made to the NHARA Review Committee by any
member of NHARA.
All coaches not already certified as a Referee need to attend Referee
Training. The USSA AO Exam for Referees is given each Fall. In addition,
all certified referees must attend an update clinic every other year in order
to retain current certification. The USSA Competition Guide containing the
USSA Rules (similar to the FIS ICR), is available on the USSA Web Site.
A RACE MAY NOT BE SCORED IF ANY MEMBER OF THE JURY IS NOT
A MEMBER OF USSA. This means that the race might not count.

COACHES COUNCIL
The NHARA Coaches’ Council is dedicated to improving all facets of ski
racing in New Hampshire. Open meetings are held regularly in the fall and
spring and are open to all active New Hampshire coaches. We encourage
all to attend.
The goals of the Coaches’ Council are:
1. To provide an opportunity for all coaches to further their
education through NHARA Programs or through programs
available at a national level through USSA or other professional
organizations.
2. To share experiences and ideas with other coaches for the
benefit of all.
3. To create a positive environment for our athletes to grow and achieve
their goals.
To achieve these goals NHARA provides coaches with a forum for education
and communication and offers financial aid for qualified continuing education
programs.
All coaches must be USSA members as a Professional Coach. There
are other requirements also; see the ussa website for details. All NHARA
coaches must submit a copy of their current USSA Membership Card to
their respective Program Director or Head Coach, who in turn must submit
a list of coaches to the NHARA Executive Secretary, Laurie Stevens. Only
those listed coaches will receive NHARA Coaches Membership Cards giving
them access to race courses.
The Coaches Council meets regularly at the New Hampton School with
all NHARA coaches welcome. The NHARA On Snow Coaches Clinic is
calendared for Bretton Woods in early December 2015. See the NHARA
website for further information.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Eastern Region USSA Membership Requirements
USSA Competitor, $150
Required for all U16 (YOB 2001 & older) and above who wish to have
USSA points. Renewing members add a late fee of $25 after Oct.15th.
A USSA competitor membership and membership in one state racing
organization are required for all levels of scored racing in the Eastern
Region.
USSA Youth Memberships - see USSA website for details.
For all U14 and younger (YOB 2003 and later). As the Eastern Region
will not have any scored events for U14s, there is no need for any U14 or
younger athlete to join USSA with a $150 Competitor license.
Participation in qualifying events leading to regional championships events
requires a valid USSA “Competitor” or “Youth Competitor” membership
depending upon the age group.
NHARA Membership Requirements
A current NHARA membership is required for any scored or unscored
qualifying or selection process and scored Open races . A NHARA
membership is not required for entry into Open non-scored USSA races
in NH.
U8 (YOB 2009 & 2008) - A membership in USSA is required if your
homeclub is a USSA club. A NHARA membership is not required except
for sanctioned skills events.
U10 (YOB 2007 & 2006) - A USSA Youth Competitor membership is
required. A NHARA membership is required to enter in NHARA sanctioned
events. U10s are not eligible to participate in divisional U12 /U14 qualifiers.
Renewing U16, U19, U21 & Sr members add the late fee of $25 after
October 15th.
Renewing Youth members add the late fee of $25 after November 30th.
Application forms for USSA and for NHARA memberships are available
on the USSA (www.ussa.org) and the NHARA website (www.nhalpine.org)
through Active or a downloadable form.
In applying to USSA be sure that the Waiver and Release of Liability form
is properly signed. NHARA requires a signed Code of Conduct consent.
You will not receive your membership card(s) without this, and, therefore,
will not be allowed to race. If you are under 18, your parent must also sign.

ENTERING RACES
On line registration may be available for some races. Check the calendar
on the NHARA website for availability.
For races where on line registration is not available an entry form (voucher)
for each race you plan to attend at least 10 days before the race. Refer to
pages 17 & 18 for addresses. Copy the voucher from the last page. Please
do not enlarge or reduce the form. Complete it LEGIBLY using the same
name that is on your USSA card.
A SEPARATE CHECK MUST BE SENT FOR EACH RACER FOR EACH
RACE.
THE ENTRY FEE MUST BE INCLUDED WITH YOUR ENTRY OR
IT MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED AND A $10 SURCHARGE ADDED AT
REGISTRATION. Entry by phone, fax, e-mail or at registration may also
incur this charge.
U12/U14 Divisional Qualifiers and U16 SL & GS Qualifiers do not require
vouchers.
LIMITING Entries: Most races will be limited to 200 starters with some
organizers accepting even fewer. All racers, especially those new to

CODE OF CONDUCT
NHARA supports the Competition Regulations of USSA which provide a
framework in which the various ski programs are developed and operated
at all levels. It particularly endorses the policy for sportsmanlike conduct
which states that competitors, coaches, officials or other personnel may be
reprimanded, disqualified or suspended for conduct at USSA events that
is prejudicial to the sport, as recommended by member organizations and
so determined by a Division’s Board of Directors.
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP includes, but is not limited to:
A. Respect for all race officials and ski area employees.
B. Suitable dress and grooming, courtesy and good manners in public
places, at races and while traveling.
C. Self-control, responsible behavior, consideration for other’s
physical and emotional well-being. No profane or abusive
language.
D. Respect for private and public property.
E. Abstinence from the illegal use of alcohol and drugs as befitting
an athlete, coach or official representing a club, school or ski
area.
F. Respect for lift facilities, lift privileges, and closed areas.
G. Honest conduct. No theft or misrepresentation whatsoever.
H. Attendance at awards ceremonies and receptions.
I. Respect of USSA and FIS rules regarding commercial display at awards ceremonies
A summary of the Regulations may be found in the USSA Competition
Guide. Copies of the complete By-laws and Competition Regulations are
available at the USSA Office.
A RACE JURY, OR THE NHARA REVIEW COMMITTEE, MAY PREVENT
A RACER, DISQUALIFIED FOR MISCONDUCT, FROM COMPETING IN
ONE OR MORE FUTURE RACES.
NHARA REVIEW AND APPEALS COMMITTEE
This committee shall review reported incidents of misconduct on the part
of any NHARA racer, coach, or official, and shall recommend sanctions, as
appropriate, to the Board of Trustees. The committee shall review reports
of mismanagement and rules infractions at NHARA-sponsored races, and
shall provide recommendations to race organizations and juries to improve
the quality of NHARA-sponsored races. This Committee also reviews
disciplinary actions taken by Race Juries and any complaints concerning
Athlete Selections, Sanctions and Reprimands.
Appeals should be forwarded to the Chairman as soon as possible,
accompanied by a fee which will be returned if the appeal is upheld. Action
by the Committee will be taken as soon as possible.

RACER RESPONSIBILITY CODE
1. Bindings must be in good condition and properly adjusted for the
conditions. Unbreakable sunglasses and goggles are essential.
2. Warm up for training and racing sessions. Stretch for at least five minutes
before skiing. Warm up gradually on snow, skiing various radius turns,
before skiing at racing speed.
3. Always carefully inspect a course before running it. Follow the inspection
rules for the training session or race. Do not cross or go onto closed
courses at competitions, and always be certain that practice courses
are clear before proceeding.
4. If you fall and are unhurt, immediately signal that you are OK and
quickly move a safe distance away from the course. Collect your gear
and reorganize away from the active course.
5. While attending a race event, stand far enough from the course to allow
a racer on course full visibility, room to recover and room to come to a
stop without hitting you.
6. Always remain still while there is a racer on course, and never free-ski
on or near a closed race course except as allowed by the established
inspection procedures.
7. If a gate pole is knocked out or broken and presents a danger, place
it outside the course, preferably totally to the side of the slope or as
directed by the coaches, course officials or workers.
8. Be sure to communicate with your coach when tired, ill, uncertain or
afraid, if the course is too difficult or rough, or if visibility is poor.
9. Always stop below your coach or training group. Never attempt to stop
above any skier or group. Always leave room to take “evasive action”
should your coach or others in your training group move unexpectedly.
10. When your run is complete, move immediately out of the finish area
or away from the course. Make sure that you have an adequate finish
area and safe room outside all courses.
11. Never jump or ski fast into an uncontrolled “blind spot”.
12. When free-skiing outside race and training areas you must be aware
of others and ski in full control at all times. Respect other skiers’ rights
to a safe and pleasant skiing experience.

NHARA POLICIES
The NHARA schedule and selection procedures have been developed over
the past several years to present New Hampshire alpine racers with the
best possible opportunities for advancement, development and enjoyment
of the sport. They are designed to mesh with the USSA-Eastern, USSA
and FIS schedules.
In studying the selection procedures on the following pages, please
remember that they are intended to be as straight forward as possible, and
to encourage rapid mobility. No valid procedure can be instantly responsive,
however, so that some racers may need to wait until the next series of
events, or for the next Seed List, in order to see their progress reflected
in movement up through the “pipeline”. When possible, the qualifying
procedures are also by age group, which allows younger racers to compare
themselves to their peers, making it easier to evaluate their progress.
As the season progresses, new information will become available and must
be considered in racer selections. Qualifying procedures will always make
use of the most up-to-date information. In addition, as a series of events
is held, the results of those events may be reflected in future selections to
races and state quotas.
QUOTAS AND SELECTION PROCEDURES FOR EACH RACE/
SERIES APPEAR ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES.
To be eligible for a NHARA event or for selection to a state quota or team,
a racer must be a current member of NHARA, with current dues paid at
least 10 days prior to the event or the selection date ($25 is the late fee for
all renewals for scored racers after October 15th).
No awarding of place points, or selection to quotas will be refigured
subsequently to include racers who join NHARA late, whether the late
joining was to take advantage of an unexpected result or because of an
earlier oversight. All racers must be USSA Licensed Competitors ($150).
USSA Competition rules state that a racer may represent only one state
at any given time. Full-time students who are training in New Hampshire
Programs will represent New Hampshire. Membership in more than one
state organization at a time is not allowed (see Eastern Region Handbook)

U16 (2000 & 2001)
U16 (14 and 15 year olds) competition is a transitional step between
children’s racing and seeded competition. Eastern U16s compete at the
state level in a scored qualifying series for selection to regional events. See
page 36-39 for more information.
U16s may compete in USSA scored competitions at the discretion of the
coach in order to begin developing a point profile (recommendation is
not to exceed 16 starts). Any USSA points earned at these events will be
valid as soon as they appear on the USSA points list but may not be used
for qualifying or seeding in qualifying events. A current USSA Competitor
License is required for access to seeding and points.
The Eastern U16 Championships and Eastern U16 Finals are major season
long goals. A scored U 16 Qualifier series in January and February is used
for selection of atletes to the Eastern U16 Championships. A scored U16
State Championship will be held in mid-March from which 3M/3W will qualify
for the Eastern U16 Finals This season there is a state quota for the Eastern
U16 Am-Can event where selected racers will compete against athletes from
Alpine Quebec and Alpine Ontario. Also on the calendar is an invitational
U16/U14 National Project in early April at Snowbird, Utah.
U19 (1997, 1998 &1999)
U21 (1995 & 1996) & SR (1994 & earlier)
Various series of races form a pipeline from local to state to regional
to national and to international events. The age groupings of seeded
competitions allow for a designed progression of athlete development from
state and regional teams to becoming nominated for the U.S. Ski Team.
Advancement to these top levels of competition is based on performance.
Athletes involved in seeded competitions in the USSA Eastern region
must hold a USSA competitor membership and be a member of one state
racing organization (where attending school or where the most training
takes place).
Racers 18 years and older may race in Masters Alpine races (excluding
Championships). An International Ski Federation (FIS) License is required
for any FIS racing and inclusion on the FIS points list. Contact the Eastern
Region website for more information.

NHARA RACES
for
SR, U21, U18 and U16 Racers
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
U16 and older competitors are required to hold a USSA Competitor License.
A current membership in a state racing association is required for all age
groups of USSA registered athletes as well as USSA registered foreign
athletes who wish to be eligible to qualify for state quota spot selection to
Championship events). Competitors must have their membership card(s)
availableat every race. Valid and sufficient medical/accident insurance is
mandatory. Proof of insurance must be carried with the racer and available
at each race as well.
A racer must race for the state and region in which he/she resides or in which
they are attending school and/or training on a long-term basis. The decision,
which must be made at the start of the season, must be based on where
the racer spends the greatest part of his/her ski training. It must be abided
by for the entire season, unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
Competitors must join their state associations prior to or at the same time
as joining USSA.
OPEN RACES:
NHARA’s Scored Race Calendar is composed primarily of Open Races.
An exception is the NHARA U16 Qualifier Series which is limited to current
NHARA U16 members.
Any current USSA Licensed Competitor with a current state affiliation,
NHARA member or not, may enter NHARA races (except for the NHARA
U16 Qualifier Series) subject to the race organizer’s field size limits and the
series specified requirements. The Open Races designated as Macomber
Cup, Tecnica Cup, and Spring Series races are subject to the series specified
requirements.
Only current NHARA members meeting the series eligiblity requirements
will be scored toward the Series Awards.
SCORING:
Only current NHARA members training and racing full time for a NHARA
club in the current season and meeting the series eligibility requirements
will be scored toward the Series awards.
Independent (IND) racers may participate in any NHARA Open race BUT
will not score series points in any of them and will not be eligible for the
NHARA Development or State teams. An Independent (IND) is a person
who holds a current USSA and NHARA license and who may or may not
be a member of a club.

NHARA SG RACES: Jan. 19 & Jan. 20.
Field size may be limited with preference for entry given to NHARA members
until 72 hours before the race. After that the field may be filled by non-NHARA
members in order of receipt of entry.
There are 2 races each day. The first race on 1/19 & 1/20 will be scored for
the Macomber Cup Series.
TECNICA CUP SERIES: Dec. 31, Jan.2, 10, 17, .24, & 31
Any current USSA Competitor with a current state affiliation may enter any
of the Tecnica Cup races.
Current NHARA racers with Slalom or Giant Slalom points MORE than
the point cut-off (the points required to be eligible for Macomber Cup),
points to be determined on the USSA Late Fall Seed List, will be scored
for Tecnica Cup.
Out-of-state entries will be accepted in order of receipt until the race is full.
Tecnica Cup athletes are not to be displaced assuming timely entry fees.
The SL/GS Point Cut-offs will be posted on the NHARA website by Dec.
15. Racers qualifying by points on this list but wishing to race Tecnica Cup
only must notify Bev Oliver by 12/27/15.
Only the racer’s 4 best results will count toward the Tecnica Cup.
MACOMBER CUP SERIES: Jan 3., Jan.10 (host TBD), Jan.17, & Jan.
31 plus SGs 1/19 & 1/20.
All racers with Slalom or Giant Slalom points less than points to be

Any racer qualifying for Macomber Cup on later USSA point lists in the
season may elect to be scored for Macomber Cup providing notification is
sent to Bev Oliver at the time of qualification. In this instance the racer will
not score any more Tecnica Cup points but will keep those already earned.
Note: In the event that a racer scores in the top 5 in both Macomber Cup
and Tecnica Cup series, the Macomber Cup results will take precedence.

POINTS NEED CORRECTION ?
New Hampshire racers who believe that their seed points are incorrect
should contact the NHARA Seed Review Chairman by mail or email. Do
NOT contact Eastern or USSA directly.
Please give name, address, USSA number, copy of Racer History sent you
last summer if you raced in seeded competition last winter, and a copy of
the race results in question. A list of the races which you have successfully
finished should be included if you think you have not received proper credit.
Your impression of what is wrong may be helpful. A check of the USSA
Web site may help.
Please notify the NHARA Seed Review Chairman as soon as possible. It
may be helpful to others as well!

U16s and RACERS NEW TO NHARA
This information may be particularly helpful to first year U16s and/or
anyone who is new to our program in NHARA (New Hampshire Alpine
Racing Association).
RACING CATEGORY
1) Getting Started: The heart of the U16 competition calendar is the
refinement of alpine racing skills and the 6 race qualifying series leading
to the Eastern Region U16 Championship, the Eastern U16 Finals and
the Eastern U16 Am-Can events. The remainder of the schedule is filled
with open scored and unscored races. See page 34-15 for more detailed
information.
The focus for U16s is improvement of developmental skills, establishing a
USSA point profile and qualifying for the Macomber series. See below for
more information.
Seeding: your start order is determined by your points on the current USSA
Point List. In the your first race you are listed at 990. You hope to lower
your points by finishing 2 runs of each race. Points: Refer to the USSA
Competition Guide for an explanation of the calculations. Your points are
also one means of determining whether you are eligible for Macomber Cup
Series scoring.
2) Established : This group (U19s) usually has already established a
point profile and understands which events are important in their racer
management. Their focus is qualifying for the Championship events in March
and trying to make criteria for FIS starts. Gaining entry to the FIS races
allows them to establish their FIS point profile and to continue improving
their USSA point profile and establish eligibility for selection to regional,
tri-regional and national events in the pipeline.
3) Advanced: This group (U21, SR) is usually composed of the top tier
skiers. The focus of this group is usually centered around FIS racing.
These athletes are already qualified for all the NH races and may not attend
a large number of these events due to conflicts with the FIS schedule and
training time. Both the athletes and parents of this group understand the
system.
NHARA RACE SERIES
1) Tecnica Cups: This series was originally designed for the “getting started”
group. These are now essentially Open races. See page 26 for more info.
Each Tecnica Cup race qualifies a number of skiers to the Macomber series.
Scores within the season series are kept with top finishers winning some
booty from the series sponsor – Tecnica.

2) Macomber Cups: These are now essentially Open races. The Macomber
Cup is an important series for the established and the advanced skier.
This series has a specific point level of qualification which is announced in
mid-December. Once determined, the cutoff will be posted on the NHARA
website-www.nhalpine.org. Scoring in this series is usually a goal for the
“getting started” group. See page 26 for more info.
3) NHARA SGs: These are the in-state speed opportunities and are open
races. Historically these events are held at Attitash and are great entry
level speed events.
4) LaFoley Spring Series: These are open races with no qualifying
pressures. The LSS is a race series hosted by the LaFoley Family with
some nice trophies for the series winners. Scoring is by current NHARA
members only. See page 27 for more info.
U19, U21, SR
FIS RACES: Selection method and age group quotas will be posted on
the Eastern website.
A. Super Series racing represents the “next level” of racing This elite
FIS scored series is used to select athletes to US Nationals. Participating
in these races requires a FIS racing license and an established level of
USSA experience. Selection to these events is regionally based (by USSA
points). There is not a state quota for this series. It is high level competition

It is really important for the racer to plan his/her season and to balance
training with race starts.
Your coach can help you set up a racer management plan that is appropriate
for you. An optimal number of race starts allows for adequate training and
rest.
Constant monitoring of racer management is necessary to be
successful and there is no true formula.

NHARA STATE TEAMS
A State Team has been named each year since 1973 to provide recognition
for the outstanding racers in New Hampshire and to support ski racing in
the state by encouraging the team’s participation in NHARA races. The
privileges extended include free entry to all NHARA races and, with the
compliments of Ski New Hampshire and its members, free skiing at most
New Hampshire ski areas.
A State Development Team has been named for several years to provide
recognition for the top junior racers in New Hampshire. These racers pay
only the “head taxes” to enter NHARA races.
SGs are an exception. All team members must pay full fare for SGs.
All those named to State Teams shall have been licensed USSA Alpine
Competitors and NHARA members the previous season. All those named
to State Teams shall hold a current USSA Competitor license and a current
NHARA membership, training and racing full time for a NHARA club in
the current season, by the October 15th, 2015 deadline. There will be no
exceptions. You will not be considered for a state team if your memberships
are paid after 10/15, 2015.
All Team members must have started at least 3 NHARA races during the
previous season, be current members of a NHARA Club training and racing
for that club in the 2015-2016 season, and be prepared to participate in
at least 3 NHARA races during the upcoming season. (MJ’s race and the
UNH race do not count.)
Athletes claiming IND status are not eligible for selection to any of the
NHARA State Teams.
STATE TEAM: 12 Men and 7 Women. Selection criteria:
• NTSM from the October USSA Seed List 4 of all eligible
Senior, U21 & U19 racers, SL & GS only.
• Ties are broken by the best rank in the other discipline.
DEVELOPMENT TEAM: Up to 10 Men/10 Women. Selection criteria:

or deny participation within 48 hours. Empty spots will be filled immediately
from the Alternate List.
The ACC Secretary will make the entries to the Eastern Office. Some regional
events require payment of the entry fee online through Adminskiracing for
Open FIS and Eastern Cups.. See the Eastern Region Handbook for more
info. All racers training in New Hampshire must be members of NHARA to
participate in these races.

2/27/2015.
2. Selection will be made from an NTSM SL/GS ranking of requested
athletes from USSA Points List 9 valid 2/18/16.
3. Unfilled spots will be filled by going down the NTSM list as well as fill
unused spots with the other gender if needs be.
4. Final selection will be sent to coaches of selected athletes.

FIS & USSA EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS
Per FIS and USSA rules, it is the athlete’s responsibility to ski, train and race
on appropriate equipment. These equipment regulations are posted on the
NHARA website and on the USSA website under Alpine Rules.
Approved helmets manufactured for ski racing are mandatory for all training
and race events - SL, GS, SG & DH.
The NHARA ALPINE COMPETITION COMMITTEE (ACC) has the right and
obligation to review, at any time, any and all selection criteria established
by NHARA, and, in the event of unusual and unexpected circumstances,
to revise, modify or waive application of any such criteria as they relate to
the selection of individual racers. In the event that the ACC exercises its
authority hereunder, its decision shall be subject to review and approval by
the NHARA Executive Committee.

At the center of this year’s U16 schedule is a 6 race series used to select
athletes to the U16 Eastern Championships and U16 Eastern Finals. All
races in this series will be run as scored races to the USSA points list.
The U16 calendar was put together to give the athletes the opportunity to set
up the race schedule to meet their personal needs and to give programs a
chance to provide larger training blocks. In addition to the qualifying series,
U16s may enter other U S S A scored races at their discretion. Refer to
pages 26-29 for information regarding Macomber Cup, Tecnica Cup, and
LaFoley Spring Series.

Qualifier Entering: Except for the SGs in the series, each athlete’s entry
will be submitted by his/her home coach. Entries will be submitted by team,
in team rank order determined by your home coach. Race vouchers and
pre-registration (except for SGs) will not be necessary for the U16 Qualifying
Series. Payment of entry fees for each race will be the responsibility of
each athlete, to be paid online through RunSignUp or no later than at race
registration, the morning of the event.
Qualifier Seeding: Team running orders will be submitted by the coaches to
the event organizer by Tuesday prior to each race. There will be no changes

to the running orders the night before the race. Each club’s submitted
roster will then be divided into 5 seeds.
1st run start order - by seed; random within seed.
2nd run order - flip 30 BIBBO.
SG - by seed; random within seed.
Qualifier Rankings: Each race will have the race results ranked using
New World Cup points (100-1st, 80-2nd, 60-3rd... 1-30th).. Each
athlete’s best 2 result rankings from within the qualifying series will be
used for the selections (a maximum of one SG result may be used).
New World Cup Points: Refer to the USSA Competition Guide for
explanation of New World Cup Points.
Tie Breaks: New World Cup Method for Place Points. In the event of a
tie in the final scoring, the breaks will go to the next best result for
Qualifier rankings.
Eastern Automatics will not count in scoring for theNHARA Quota to the
Eastern Championships. They will be counted towards NHARA team
scoring.
Selections: The entire NHARA quota (M TBD /W TBD) to the U16 Eastern
Championships will be selected from the series rankings. 75% of the
U16 Eastern Finals quota (M TBD /W TBD) will also be selected from
this series. The remainder of the Eastern U 1 6 Finals quota (3M/3W)
will be filled using rankings from the NHARA U16 State Finals.

UNSCORED COMPETITION
Children's Racing
NHARA Children’s Racing programs provide an opportunity for boys and
girls 15 and under, to develop their skills and experience the benefit of
competitive alpine ski racing. The Children’s Racing ladder is designed
for easy entry to the sport of ski racing and strives to provide appropriate
levels of the development and racing experience for each age group. As
skills develop, the more experienced racers can advance to regional events
and beyond.
An important organizational element in the U10, U12 and U14 programs,
is the grouping of racers and events by Divisions. Divisions are configured
with sensitivity to geographical compatibility and manageable field sizes.
These Divisions are listed on the following pages.
In addition to Divisional events, there are extensive opportunities to race in
USSA Open Races. The local Open Races are of a type and schedule to
have the added benefit of serving as preparation for the Divisional events.
All participating athletes must have the appropriate USSA Membership as
well as NHARA Membership. A NHARA membership is not required to enter
USSA Open Unscored races. Both memberships are required for NHARA
U10-U16 sanctioned events. Additional USSA and NHARA membership
information can be found on page 15.
U16s must have a Competition License ($150) to compete in races. Refer
to pages 34-36 for description of the NHARA U16 program.
CLUBS
Participants in the U16 Program and the U12-U14 Program in New
Hampshire must be members of a NHARA Club. U12-U14 races are entered
as TEAMS by coaches. Do NOT send vouchers or money. Racers must
have current NHARA and USSA cards available at NHARA events. Team
lists must include year of birth and USSA number.
Independent racers may enter NHARA Open Races provided that they are
USSA members. NHARA cards are not required at USSA Open Unscored
events.

U8 Competition (YOB 2008 & 2009)
U8 non-scored competition (6 and 7 year-olds) is organized at your home
area or close to home area for the season. Club and divisional events
will be calendared that focus on measurable skills in a fun and positive
environment emphasizing the development of the fundamental skiing
skills of balance, agility, basic carving and coordination. U8s in NH are not
eligible to participate in Open races or qualifying events. A membership in
USSA is required if your home club is a USSA club. A NHARA membership
is not required.

HIGH SCHOOL RACING
Many NHARA athletes train and compete during the week with high school
teams providing these athletes with valuable midweek training. Several
NHARA programs link with the high school programs with cross over
coaching and by helping the high schools host races.
During President’s week the top 10 male and female skiers from the four
high school divisions ski in the NH Qualifier for the Eastern High School
Championships. This event is a best two out of four run shootout to pick
the 20 male and female athletes who will ski for NH at the Eastern High
School Championships.
The Championships have been hotly contested for over twenty years. The
site rotates between ski areas in New Hampshire and Vermont. Held in mid
March, the Championships are a USSA scored event with teams from as
far away as New Jersey and Wisconsin.
In recent years the NH teams have dominated the Championships with
their strong skiing and their team spirit. This success reflects the strength
and cooperation of the high schools and the supporting NHARA programs.
Aaron Loukes is the NH Coordinator and Dan Marshall is the Chairman of
Eastern High School Racing.
New England Masters
Ski Racing Foundation Scholarships
Scholarships will be awarded this year to two athletes who are
18 years and younger in VT and two in NH. Refer to the NHARA
website for further information information and an application form.

USSA MASTERS ALPINE RACING

Racers 18 years of age and older are eligible to participate in all sanctioned
USSA National and Divisional races for Masters (age as of Dec. 31, 2015).
Racers must have a current USSA license (Masters, Student or Competitor
if 18 to 24 years of age, Coaches if under 40 years of age or Temporary see website for more specific info). Competition is divided into classes or
five-year increments, determined by age.
Entry Fees, Procedures and Deadlines:
Entries must reach race organizers by the Wednesday before the race to
assure entry into the race and avoid late fees. A separate entry form and
check should be submitted for each race entered. On line registration will
be available for most or all races this season. See the Masters website
for details.
NEW ENGLAND MASTERS ALPINE RACING
New England Masters Skiing, Inc. is a non-profit corporation which
administers the Sise Cup Series.This series offers a season-long schedule
of races. There are prizes for individual races and several two or three
race events as well as overall and individual discipline season awards to
the best male and female racer, and age class champions. Scoring is a
modified world cup point system. Race rules are those of the FIS except
as modified by USSA, the USSA Alpine Masters National Working Group
and New England Masters Skiing, Inc. Awards and social gatherings are
held after each race.

To be eligible for this support the racer must belong to NHARA and have
started at least 4 NHARA races in the current season. (MJ’s race and UNH
Fund Raiser do not count)
Checks will be issued in May with amounts to be determined by the Racer
Support Committee after considering the funds available and costs to
racers.
Camps
NHARA racers invited to National Camps should apply to the Racer Support
Committee for support. This application must include a budget. To be
eligible, the racer should have started at least 4 NHARA races in the most
recent season, and must be a current NHARA member. Support for up to
one third of the cost to the racer could be granted. Application forms are
available from Dan Marshall.
Elite athletes should be aware of the funds available from Friends of New
Hampshire Skiing for participation in US Ski Team Development Programs.

athletes in their quest to make the U.S. Ski Team.
