What To Know Before You Go
GETTING THERE
PACKING LIST
Ground transportation from Orlando
International Airport to the Caribe Royale is
available via taxicab (approximately $50.00
USD) or through the Mears Transportation
shuttle (we offer a discount coupon off
the regular round-trip price of about
$40.00). You’ll receive our Mears coupon
with your final registration confirmation
letter. Tickets may be purchased at the
Mears Transportation desk at the Orlando
International Airport. Reservations may be

Light clothing: Orlando weather in May is
warm and humid, with outside temperatures
usually in the mid- to high-80s and
sometimes 90s.
Sweaters or jackets: Convention center
rooms are kept quite cold, so you may need
to cover up. Scrubs or easily-laundered
outerwear are recommended.
Closed-toed shoes are absolutely required
in Hands-on Laboratory sessions. You will be
notified if special attire is recommended for
your particular course.

ACCOMMODATIONS
As an NAVC Institute attendee, you’ll stay in a
one-bedroom suite at the Caribe Royale AllSuites Hotel and Convention Center, located
at 8101 World Center Drive in Orlando. Your
suite will have a separate living room, a
bathroom, two televisions, a mini-refrigerator
and a microwave.
Check in is on Sunday, May 15 and check out
on Friday, May 20. A hotel reservation will
automatically be made, if you are registered
for those dates. If you wish to arrive earlier
or stay later than these dates, you will be
responsible for hotel charges and will need to
complete the Lodging Form, part of the back
cover of this brochure.
Please note, If you are attending one of the
Small Animal Ultrasound courses, your stay
will cover the dates of attendance. Please
refer to the course dates for Group 1 and
Group 2 as outlined on pages 21 and 22.
ARRIVAL
Check in at the Caribe Royale is at 3:00 PM.
The NAVC Institute Registration Desk in the
Convention Center will be open from 2:00 to
7:00 PM on Saturday and 7:00 to 6:00 PM on
Sunday.
An informal Welcome Reception will be held
on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Please join us for light hors d’oeuvres and
drinks. A short introductory welcome and
orientation program will be held at 7:00 PM.
CE CREDIT HOURS
Each NAVC Institute course provides
32 CE credit hours. (RACE approved)
MEAL PLAN
The NAVC Institute registration fee includes
meals for the entire program. All meals are
served in the Grand Sierra D Ballroom and are
for badged attendees only. If you wish to have
your family or guests join you for any meal,
you may purchase meal vouchers at the NAVC
Institute Registration Desk. Please note there is
no evening meal planned for Wednesday, May
18th. Instead, you’re invited to an Exhibitor
Reception (drinks and hors d’oeuvres) from
3:30 - 5:00 PM where you can see the latest
veterinary technologies and other solutions,
talk with company representatives and have a
chance to win great prizes.
There will be vegetarian choices available
at every meal. Please note any special food
restrictions or allergies by answering the
question in the online registration process or
by completing the Registration Form at the
back of this brochure. We will do our best to

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course, co-led by ABVP President, Dr. Kimberlee Buck
and Dr. Susan Little, is encouraged for candidates for the
American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) as well as
anyone interested in a hardcore review of general medicine.
You do not have to be a potential ABVP candidate to
participate. However, each subject is patterned after the
actual percentage breakdown of the exam and should
provide in-depth coverage of topics participants need to
know to help prepare for the ABVP Certification
Examination. This course also includes two practice
examinations simulating the real ABVP practical test. Your
course instructors will immediately review your practicals to
enhance your learning experience. This truly is the industry’s
best value for an ABVP prep course when you consider all
that is included in your trip (lodging, meals, course materials,
etc.). Take your canine/feline skills to the max in preparation
for the ABVP exam or just because you want to be the best
you can be. Assistance with case report preparation will also

Dr. Buck graduated from
Michigan State University
in 1989. She is the owner
of Frankenmuth-Birch Run
Veterinary Hospital, a
small animal/exotics practice in Michigan. Dr. Buck
first certified in Canine/Feline Practice in 1997 and
Avian Practice in 2007. She has recertified twice in
Canine/Feline Practice and once in Avian Practice. She
created the ABVP Study groups and continues to
serve as their administrator and a group leader,
providing assistance to applicants and candidates.
She is also the 2015-2016 President of the American
Board of Veterinary Practitioners and a member of the
ABVP Foundation Board of Directors.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Behavior problems result in the death or relinquishment of more
dogs and cats than infectious, neoplasic and endocrine disease,
combined. Almost 60% of clients have at least one question
about their dog’s or cat’s behavior during any visit, and research
indicates that most of these questions go unanswered. Virtually
all behavioral problems are treatable and treatment results in a
safer, calmer, happier community of pets. Yet education in and
access to behavioral medicine remain enormous unmet needs.
Few veterinary schools offer comprehensive education in
modern behavioral medicine. Practices that invest in integrating
behavioral medicine into their services experience growth in the
complexity of services delivered across all medical fields because
patients live longer and better.
This course was created to bridge the gap between need and
knowledge. As an applied behavioral medicine course, the
instructors will provide the theoretical basis for understanding
the etiology of behavioral pathology within the context of a
stepwise approach to patient work-up and treatment. The labs
are specifically designed to teach hands-on observational,
interventional and fear-diminishing handling skills. The use of
video cases, combined with the interactive format for which this
course is renown, will provide the practitioner with skills that are
immediately useful. This is an intense, rigorous, intellectually
stimulating and fun course designed to renew the curiosity that
will help practitioners forge new and courageous skills
benefiting their patients and clients.
After completing this program, you will be able to:
• Recognize and identify the range of behaviors associated
with behavioral states and identify patterns of behavioral
associations present in common behavioral pathologies
• Differentiate and define the neurodevelopmental periods
and apply this knowledge to case management and
problem prevention
• Match and demonstrate behavioral and other interventions
that will aid in resolving behavioral pathologies
• Analyze which pharmacological interventions are most
suitable for each patient, treat patients and monitor resultant
outcomes
• Interpret problematic behavioral patterns in a manner that
will persuade and aid clients in prevention, early intervention
and treatment of the most common behavioral issues

is DACVB. She has given
hundreds of national and
international presentations and short courses and is
the author of over 100 scholarly publications, dozens
of textbook chapters and hundreds of abstracts,
columns, commentaries,etc. Dr. Overall has been
named the North American Veterinary Conference
(NAVC) Small Animal Speaker of the Year and in 2010
was named one of the The Bark’s 100 Best and
Brightest - Bark Magazine’s list of the 100 most
influential people in the dog world over the past 25
years. She is currently a senior research scientist at the
University of Pennsylvania.
Martin Godbout, DVM, DACVB
Dr. Martin Godbout is currently responsible for the
animal behavior department for the Daubigny
Veterinary Group. As CEO of this group, he oversees
specialty veterinary services and general practice
through a referral center and nine satellite clinics in
the Quebec City area. Dr. Godbout is also the founder
of the banner GlobalvetTM, a global concept developed
especially for veterinarians interested in integrating
behavioral services and nutrition to their practices. His
fascination with the bond between companion animal
and owner has led him to contribute to specific
research on puppy behavior and on early detection of
behavioral problems in dogs.
Kersti Seksel, BVSc (Hons,) MRCVS, MA (Hons),
FACVSc, DACVB, DECAWBM
Kersti Seksel is the principal of a specialist practice in
behavioural medicine in Sydney Australia. She
pioneered Puppy Preschool® and Kitten Kindy®
classes to help owners and their pets understand
each other better so that they can live together in
harmony. She teaches the distance education course
in Behavioural Medicine for the Centre for Veterinary
Education (University of Sydney) and is an adjunct
senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University.

Dr. Cindy Charlier brings
31 years of small animal
practice and ownership
experience to dentistry
continuing education.
After graduating from the
University of Illinois in
1984, she spent the first
19 years of her practice career as a partner in a 22
doctor AAHA small animal practice. Dr. Charlier
became a diplomate of the American Veterinary
Dental College in 2002. She currently owns Fox Valley
Veterinary Dentistry and Surgery, a dentistry and oral
surgery referral practice, with offices in Chicago and
St. Charles, Illinois. Dr. Charlier has been recognized
by her peers as the recipient of the Peter Emily
Outstanding Candidate Award and the Fellow of the
Year Award. In 2006, she founded VDENT (Veterinary
Dental Education, Networking & Training) to educate
the entire veterinary healthcare team about the
importance of oral health and its impact on all of our
patients. Dr. Charlier is passionate and enthusiastic
when sharing her knowledge of veterinary dentistry
throughout the country.

Emergency & Critical Care: Helping
You Keep Your Cool in the ER
COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this course, you’ll learn all you need to know about topics
related to emergency and critical care (ECC). This four-day
intensive course will be a practical approach to the stressful,
fast-paced field of ECC and will help improve your
knowledge and skills in this area. This course will benefit
veterinarians who are transitioning to emergency medicine
or even for the more experienced emergency veterinarian
who needs a review of common case management,
emergency procedures, diagnostic testing and general
overview of the emergent or critically ill patient. The small
group environment will allow for an intimate setting to
practice a hands-on approach to ECC.
Topics that will be covered include: fluid therapy, acid-base
balance, trauma, respiratory disease, acute abdomen,
coagulopathies, anesthesia and analgesia, toxicology, CPR
updates, nutrition, blood pressure monitoring and endocrine
emergencies.
After completing this program, you will be able to:
• Tackle the approach to the emergent or critically ill
patient
• Perform important life-saving procedures (e.g.,
thoracocentesis, urinary catheter placement, chest
tube placement, emergency tracheostomy, etc.)
• Identify which diagnostic procedures are appropriate
for the unstable patient
• Interpret common clinicopathologic tests that are
utilized in the emergency room or ICU
• Master certain procedures necessary for treatment of
the poisoned patient (e.g., gastric lavage, orogastric
administration of activated charcoal, etc.)

Practical Techniques in Soft
Tissue & Orthopedic Surgery
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This four-day course is designed to teach participants the
technical aspects of a variety of soft tissue and orthopedic
surgery procedures. Some ‘theory’ will be included in the
lectures, but emphasis will be placed on the technical
aspects used to perform each procedure thus maximizing
time in the lab. Topics have been chosen that represent
surgical conditions commonly seen in veterinary practice
and include stifle exploratory, extracapsular fixation for
ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, medial patellar luxation
repair, vulvarplasty, laryngeal tie-back, femoral head and
neck resection (craniolateral approach), forelimb
amputation, perineal hernia repair, chest drain placement,
salivary gland resection, penile and scrotal urethrostomy,
anal sacculectomy, 15 minute gastropexy and rapid
splenectomy. Specific feline surgery techniques will include
perineal urethrostomy – a new approach, esophagostomy
tube placement, chest tube placement, nasal planum
resection and femoral head and neck excision via a ventral
approach. Video of clinical case material will be used
extensively throughout the laboratory to help illustrate each
technique.

Dr. Seim graduated from

and a two-year surgical
residency at the Animal
Medical Center in New
York City. He obtained Diplomate status in the
American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1983. He
is currently on the surgical staff at Colorado State
University. He was Chief of the Small Animal Surgery
section at CSU from 1992 to 2002. He was recipient of
the Merck AGVET Award for Creative Teaching, the
CSU Award for Instructional Innovation and selected
as the North American Veterinary Conference’s Small
Animal Speaker of the Year in 2009. Dr. Seim is
founder of VideoVet, a Veterinary Surgery Continuing

Small Animal Bootcamp:
What You Really Need to Know
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will serve as a broad overview of small animal
practice. A four-year veterinary curriculum cannot be
condensed into a four-day program, but this course will
review the most important aspects of companion animal
practice. The sessions are meant to act as a review for
clinicians that are returning to clinical small animal practice
after an absence, and as a springboard for newer clinicians
seeking an added bit of confidence prior to entering
practice. Topics will include dentistry, surgery,
endocrinology, dermatology, gastroenterology, urology,
cardiology, anesthesia and several others. Important aspects
of practice such as communication skills and tips for a
successful practice will also be covered.
• Confidently apply your accumulated knowledge into
clinical practice
• Comfortably construct a list of differential diagnoses
for diseases affecting the major body systems of small
animals

Dr. Joffe graduated from
the Western College of
Veterinary Medicine in
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
(with Great Distinction) in
1985. He completed a
small animal medicine and
surgery internship at Cornell University in 1985-86,
and then entered private practice. Dr. Joffe started his
own general practice in Calgary, Alberta (Landing
Animal Clinic) in 1989—this is now a four-doctor
practice. He was a founding partner in a multispecialist referral and emergency clinic (Calgary
Animal Referral and Emergency Centre—C.A.R.E.
Centre) in 2006, and is currently the Medical Director
at this 22-doctor facility, as well as still spending time
in his general practice. He completed his board
certification by the American Board of Veterinary
Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice) in 1992, and
has recertified this specialty via examination in 2000
and 2010. He is a Past President of both the Alberta
Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian
Academy of Veterinary Dermatology. He lectures
extensively, nationally and internationally, to
veterinarians and technicians (at least 150 hours per
year in each of the last five years) on topics including
pain management, dermatology, cardiology,
diagnostic ultrasound and zoonotic disease. In the fall
of 2012 Dr. Joffe became the National Medical
Director for Associate Veterinary Clinics, Canada’s
largest group practice.

of Veterinary Nuclear Medicine. He has taught and served
as course leader for several different courses at the
NAVC Institute. His passion is for teaching and clinical
research related to multiple imaging modalities within
veterinary medicine. He has won a number of teaching
awards including the most recent teacher of the year
award from the graduating senior class at the University
of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine (2015)
specifically for his devotion to the teaching of clinical
ultrasound in small animals.

Dr. Mattoon attended
Oregon State and
Washington State
Universities, earning the
Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine degree in 1984.
Following two years in
private practice, he entered
a radiology residency at the University of California,

the University of California, Davis. He is currently an
Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Washington State

veterinary field, Ms. Dunn started Snowgoose
Veterinary Management Consulting, which
provides technical assistance to practice teams to
meet their strategic plans. Snowgoose works with
a wide variety of practices. They range from large
specialty hospitals with 100 plus team-member
companion animal referral centers, to mixed
animal hospitals, to single veterinarian practices.Ms. Dunn conducts practice
management workshops at numerous veterinary schools and works with many
of the VBMA clubs. She has also contributed to a number of books including the

Description: Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is business metrics used to evaluate factors that are crucial to the
success of your veterinary practice. It is common to hear “KPI” in many discussions about business actions and
profitability. It is also common to hear many managers complain that they spew out a bunch of numbers that
seem to mean nothing when it comes to managing the practice. This includes social media such as bonding/
retention rates as it relates to marketing efforts and client experience.
Is it paralysis due to an over-kill of numbers, or, is it a poor choice of numbers and the lack of clarity about which
numbers determine what action is needed? If you want to improve profitability, you need to have a clear structure
of KPIs you want to follow.

for broad-spectrum parasite control.
Prevents heartworm disease and treats and
controls adult hookworm (A. caninum), roundworm,

and older and 2 lbs of weight or greater.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the
last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete
heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of
Interceptor Plus, dogs should be tested for existing
heartworm infections. The safety of Interceptor Plus
has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in
lactating females. The following adverse reactions have
been reported in dogs after administration of milbemycin
oxime or praziquantel: vomiting, diarrhea, depression/
lethargy, ataxia, weight loss, convulsions, weakness,
and salivation. For product label, including complete
