2014 WAR BIRDS OVER
DELAWARE
BY PAUL SFORZA
On the weekend of July
12th the Delaware R/C
Club held its 23rd annual “Warbirds
Over Delaware” at Lums Pond State
Park in Kirkwood Delaware. This
multi-day event (running from
Wednesday thru Saturday) is one of
the largest giant scale warbird events
on the east coast. All aircraft flown
during the event hours must be a scale
warbird and meet the IMAA specifications of at least an 80” wingspan for
monoplanes and 60” wing span for
multi-wing aircraft. The number of
registered pilots is easily more than
100 with the number of aircraft probably well over 200.
Going to this event is a bit of an annual tradition for my family and I, and
as in past years, we were not disappointed. If you are into warbirds, the
2 hour trip to this event is well worth
it. More information about the event
can be found either on the WoD website
(http://www.delawarerc.org/warbirds.
htm), on their Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/warbirds
overdelaware), or even on YouTube.
A nice video compilation of this
year’s event can be found here ->

Lastly, our own Andy Kane was in
attendance with a number of his beautiful aircraft and on Saturday gave
four lucky children a chance at the
sticks of his ½ scale Piper Cub. Take

Meeting Minutes
BY
DOUG HARPER
The meeting, held at the
McMap Flying Field, was called to
order by Vice-President Walt Gallaugher at 12:00 PM. Walt asked for
the introduction of any new members
or guests. Bernie Gmiter,
a new member, was present.
Walt invited all attendees
to fly after the meeting.
Hank Jacob brought a
nice Extra kit that he has
for sale.
County Liaison: No report.
Events: Andy Finizio thanked everyone for their help on County Heritage
Day. Everyone felt it was a great success and the volunteers all did their
job. All the ladies did a great job
cooking. We did well financially.
Oktoberfest will be the last weekend
of September, Sept 28, and will be at
no cost to members. Andy would like
to have a fun fly if there is interest.
Bealeton is Sept 5, 6, and 7 this year.
Training/Community Outreach : Joe
Pauli mentioned that Jim Fisher is
thinking about starting training with
electrics before the 8:30am start time.
Field Maintenance:
Dave Garrison reported
that the solar powered
battery charger just celebrated its first year of
operation and has delivered 6000AHrs so far.
Dave described the automatic feature
that engages if there is an overload.
Users should disconnect chargers if
that occurs and it should automatically reset. Walt Gallaugher added
that just reducing the charge rate
would also help in an overload condition. Dave plans to add an ammeter

At the War-Birds over Delaware fly in in I was given the
opportunity to share our hobby with 4 youngster's Each picked
from the crowd and given a short ground school and preflight and
then given the chance to fly my 1/2 scale clipped wing cub. We set
up the buddy box and each student got 5 minutes on the sticks.
Learning the basic’s of flight as well slow flight standard rate turns
and the traffic pattern, and then for some real fun they were able to
perform some loops and rolls. I think they had a great experience
and I want to thank the Delaware RC Club, President Mark Weiss,
Horizon Hobby fro all their support and allowing me to share our
wonderful hobby with some future aviators. Andy Kane
