Mason Law News 2 Winter 2014 Mason Law News Winter 2014 3 Capitol Hill Event Honors Congressmen Moran and Wolf In June the School of Law collaborated with several offices at the University to co-host a special Capitol Hill event. Alumni from the School of Law and the School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs honored Congressmen Jim Moran and Frank Wolf, who are retiring at the end of the current congressional term. Both Congressmen Wolf and Moran spoke highly of George Mason University and its impact on Virginia. More specifically, Moran emphasized his respect for Mason Law alumni, saying, “A large percentage of my staff over the years were attending George Mason’s law school at night. I think I’ve always had a Mason law student on my permanent staff.” Congressman Wolf is Virginia’s longest serving congressman, having been elected to represent the 10th District for seventeen terms. Congressman Moran closes his congressional career after having served the 8th District of Virginia since 1991. George Mason University, with campuses in each district, has benefited from the support of both men. Echoing these remarks, Wolf added, “In all my years [in office] I’ve hired more George Mason graduates than any other. What you have done with the school is really incredible, and you graduates have a responsibility to support the school.” Joining the celebration were several other elected officials who offered their sincere appreciation for the service and work of Congressmen Wolf and Moran. Leading that sentiment was Chairman Hal Rogers (Ky.). Distinguished Alumni Honored Michael L. Davis (’79) The Honorable Jennifer Bisk (’06) Mike Davis graduated from George Mason University School of Law in 1979, when it was known as the International School of Law. He has built a private practice as a litigator and currently directs the litigation office for State Farm Insurance, where he handles primarily personal injury and wrongful death litigation and insurance law. The annual Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) Alumni Reception on October 1 was a great succeess, with over 55 people in attendance. During the event The Honorable Jennifer Bisk (’06) was honored by the IPLS as their first Distinguished IPLS Alumnus. Also nominated by their peers for this award were Antigone Peyton (’02) and Robert Shaffer (’00). Judge Bisk clerked for the Court of Federal Claims and Davis is at present the Mason Law alumnus with the longest tenure as an adjunct professor at the law school. He began teaching at the School of Law in the summer of 1991, when he was asked to teach a summer section of Virginia Practice. Since that time, he has remained with Mason as an adjunct, also teaching Virginia Remedies, Trial Advocacy and Advanced Trial Advocacy. Also sharing stories and compliments were Virginia Senator Tim Kaine and Representatives Bob Goodlatte of Virginia’s 6th District, Rob Wittman of Virginia’s 1st District, and John Duncan Jr. (Tenn.). Mason Law’s own, Congressman David Jolly (’01) (Fla.), pictured below, also spent time meeting fellow alumni at the reception. Trial Advocacy courses eventually led to Davis’s involvement in coaching and advising students preparing for moot court competitions. Early in the development of Mason Law’s academic and extramural trial advocacy programs, Davis personally began to arrange real-world experiences for students using local courtrooms to present mock trials. He regularly works with and coaches Mason Law’s trial advocacy teams competing in mock trials. In addition to Davis’s commitment to upperclass law students, he volunteers his time and expertise to mentor first-year students who seek guidance as they decide whether they want a career in litigation. He tirelessly makes time to attend faculty/ student receptions and events for prospective students, such as Admissions Open Houses. Congressman David Jolly (‘01), pictured in his Capitol Hill office, was reelected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent the 13th District of Florida. He is a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. Congressmen Jim Moran and Frank Wolf greet one another at the Capitol Hill event. law.gmu.edu/alumni/ was a technical advisor to The Honorable Richard Linn of the Federal Circuit. She was in private practice at Sterne Kessler Fox & Goldstein, PLLC just prior to her appointment as a patent law judge in 2012. Judge Bisk volunteers her time at the law school in various ways by working with students to help them as they begin their legal careers. In addition to her Mason Law degree, Judge Bisk is a cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University with a BS in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. She also holds an MS from Stanford University. Matt Smith (3L), president of IPLS, explained that the students initiated this award for several reasons: first, it highlights accomplishments of our IP alumni, and second, it allows current Mason IP students to realize how many successful Mason IP alumni there are. The IPLS Alumni Reception allows students to meet and network with IP alumni, while alumni can visit and reminisce with old friends. Smith added, “The Mason IP program is a strong one, and connection and support between alumni and students continues to strengthen the program further.” Beyond his involvement with the School of Law, Davis is also active in the numerous local bar associations, is an author and a speaker, and is a Master of the George Mason American Inn of Court, where he works to bring programs, as well as local judges, academics and practitioners to the law school, providing wonderful opportunities for both students and alumni. law.gmu.edu/alumni/ Mason Law News 4 Winter 2014 Winter 2014 Mason Law News 5 With Gratitude Thank you to the sponsors of the 17th Annual Judicial & Legislative Reception: PLATINUM Charapp & Weiss, LLP GOLD Jack White (’86), Proprietor of New Point Oyster Co. Mason Law Alumni Age It Yourself Michael Volz (’14) and Bryan Olson (’14) also have launched a spirited endeavor. Age it Yourself is a kit that lets you age your own liquor at home in just two weeks. With a recently launched Kickstarter campaign at www.ageityourself.com, they will be shipping orders soon. Read our Q&A with the pair that follows below. What is Age It Yourself? Justin Cox (‘09), center of the photo, serves his beer back at his alma mater. Several years ago Justin Cox (’09) decided it was time to leave government service and make the leap to the service of craft beer. After years of home brewing, Cox convinced a long-time friend who was working at a West Coast brewery to come to Washington, D.C., where together they created Atlas Brew Works. When the Law Alumni Association decided to host a beer and food pairing to benefit the Association’s student scholarship fund, Atlas Brew Works was the brew of choice. Justin returned to campus to share Atlas’ story and its craft beers, describing each beer style and process. Atlas’ current production run consists of four unique beers, which were all served for the program. The round of beers consisted of Rowdy, which includes malted rye; District Common, using lager yeast at temperatures common to ale fermentation; Saison des Fětes, a winter beer with spicy French hops; and the Anniversary Farmhouse, made with local peaches. Justin explained, “We try to be aware of our environmental impact, so we give our spent hops to a local farmer, who uses it as pig feed. In exchange he provided us with fresh peaches. We thought we could incorporate this into the beer, and it works very well.” The food pairings were provided by Lyon Hall in Arlington. Chef Matt Brown broke down each pairing to explain why and how the flavors of the food complimented the beer, and vice versa. The mouthwatering menu included Cinnamon Sour Cream Panna Cotta. Guests commented that they weren’t expecting dessert with beer; but the Anniversary Farmhouse, with its touch of fresh peaches, made a perfect pairing for dessert. In addition to enjoying the evening’s menu, alumni contributed to the Alumni Association student scholarship fund. With the success of this event, the Alumni Association looks forward to holding similar events. If you are interested in another pairing event, or have suggestions for other alumni programs, please send an e-mail to lawalum@ gmu.edu. The Alumni Association wants your feedback! Read more about the brewery at www.atlasbrewworks. com. law.gmu.edu/alumni/ We invented a way to “barrel-age” any drink (spirits, wine, beer) in any sized batch, fast and with no loss of flavor. Almost every whisky-aging recipe was developed for a 53-gallon wood barrel. The barrel accounts for about 80% of the end flavor of any bourbon. If someone just throws moonshine in a smaller barrel, infuses it with staves, or uses some other method, it can turn out really nasty. This is a huge hurdle for any bars that pre-mix and age cocktails, home-brewers, craft distilleries, and vineyards. If they want a good flavor, they have to pony up for serious barrels. How Did You Get Started? We actually got started in the Mason Law Library in a study room on the second floor. I asked Bryan about a different way to age whisky. He looked at me and said, “Let’s find out.” We immediately placed an order on Amazon.com for woodchips and drove over to the VABC store on Quincy and bought some moonshine. Our first run through was not that great. This started a long process of research and experimentation. After months we finally invented a method to get those “full-barrel” flavors into a spirit in only a few The Age it Yourself team: from left, Taylor Kampa, Bryan Olson (‘14) and Michael Volz (‘14). weeks. It sounds like a lot of fun, but once Bryan and I start talking about cellobiose, hemicellulose, and oak lactones, people’s eyes glaze over and they usually just say “...Can I taste it already?” How Does Your Mason Law Degree Help You? Bryan: Having a law degree has made the process of starting a business slightly less daunting. Besides all the things I learned in all the business law classes I took, the attention to detail and thoroughness that I learned from surviving law school has been invaluable. Michael: Tremendously. I never could have anticipated which two classes I draw on almost every day: my international intellectual property seminar with Professor Housel, and my corporate writing course with Professor Sanderson. Professor Housel was gracious enough to approve my seminar-paper topic of “International Intellectual Property Law of Alcoholic Beverages,” which gave me the foundation to know not only how to protect our intellectual property, but what to protect. Corporate writing has been instrumental because I could not imagine trying to write an operating agreement or even just registering a business, if I hadn’t had Professor Sanderson eviscerate all of my projects with red ink. law.gmu.edu/alumni/ 8 Mason Law News Winter 2014 Mason Law News Winter 2014 Donor Roll George Mason Society Our most generous alumni, those whose cumulative gifts are $100,000 or more to George Mason University, are recognized through the George Mason Society. We face the toughest competition for students, and each year for the last six, the pool of applicants nationally has shrunk. Your investment is put to use in scholarship dollars that both reduce tuition for prospective students and help us to retain the high caliber talent we have at the School of Law. This year George Mason Law was the only law school in Virginia to see an increase in the number of new students, year-over-year, without a drop in the quality of our students’ numbers. None of this would be possible without your continued support. The law school’s success in this difficult legal market is tied more than ever to your continued support. Every dollar counts, and we accept your gift of any size with great thanks. We are the stewards of the reputation built by our alumni. In these trying times, we continue with one mission in mind—to provide a first-class, legal education and to protect the reputation we have built together. Mason Law raised nearly $11.3 million in FY 2014. That is up nearly 66 percent in two years and up 21 percent from last year. The overwhelming majority of these funds are raised by our centers from private donations. However, within the University, our law alumni participation on giving was once again the highest of any academic unit. Moreover, thanks to your answer to our year-end call, we not only exceeded our anticipated participation rate, but we were the only unit in the University not to see a drop in alumni participation year-over-year. On behalf of our students, administration, faculty and staff, thank you. Since the individual and the company making the match receive recognition credit, a matching gift could qualify you for one of the giving societies listed above. If your employer or your spouse’s employer matches contributions, please enclose the matching gift form when you make your gift. For additional information about matching gifts, please contact your human resources department or Assistant Dean Richard Kelsey at [email protected]. Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds can provide special tax advantages. These include a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and avoidance of capital gains taxes. The simplest and most efficient way to make a gift of stock to George Mason University School of Law is to instruct your broker or banker to transfer the stock to the GMU Foundation. You or your broker may call Assistant Dean Richard Kelsey at 703-993-8973 for transfer instructions, or write to the School of Law Development Office, 3301 Fairfax Drive, MS1G3, Arlington, VA 22201. You may also e-mail Assistant Dean Kelsey at [email protected]. Please do not sell the stock in your name and have the proceeds sent to us, or that will be considered a cash contribution, and you will be liable for capital gains tax. In addition, keep in mind that many corporate matching gift programs honor a donation of securities. Mason Law News Winter 2014 19 George Mason University School of Law A Message From the President By Kate McSweeny (’04) Law Alumni Association Board of Directors 2014–15 President, Law Alumni Association Officers Fold on dashed lines, secure flap, stamp, and mail (or fold and insert in envelope addressed as below). From: Place Stamp Here ____________________________________ ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Kate McSweeny (’04) President Dilworth Paxson LLP David Warrington (’06) The alumni board held its first meeting of the year at the beginning of September. I once again was struck by how fortunate we are to have such an active and involved alumni community. But we want to do more. At the top of the alumni board’s “to do” list for this year is a call to develop plans and ideas that will encourage more alumni to come back to the law school— to mentor, to teach, to attend a CLE, to be on a panel, to meet for happy hour, or to come to campus to see old friends and make new friends at the myriad events we host each year, often in tandem with a student organization (and sometimes featuring excellent food and drink!). No matter what is on the menu, Mason events invariably are convivial, thought-provoking, fun, and often professionally rewarding. So, it makes me think—would I be an active Mason alum if I had gone straight to law school from college and been a 1983 Mason Law graduate? Maybe not. How sad that would be for me. I would be missing out. And so would students and alumni who arrived later, because while undoubtedly there may have been a few stumbles along the way in building our remarkable school, the seeds that were planted in those early years and in the more than three decades since are flourishing today, and we are all a part of it. We are still such a young, successful law school; there is an incredible opportunity to more fully engage and grow our alumni community. So, you tell us: What would encourage you to be more involved? What events or activities would interest you? We want to hear from you. Please call me directly, 202-466-9152, or feel free to reach out to another alumni board member or to the Alumni Office. We can do great things together. I look forward to getting to know you. Until then, best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.
