1934ITALY
1st World Cup Host In Europe
The 2nd World Cup used a different format than the Inaugural championship
in Uruguay. This world cup saw a 16 team straight knockout format.
The USA was the last team to qualify beating Mexico in Rome just three
days before the tournament started.
This World Cup was the only time in history that the trophy was not defended
by the previous champions. Uruguay who won in 1930 chose not to send a
team to Europe.
Argentina refused to bring a full strength squad as they feared losing players
to teams in the Italian league.
Matches that ended in a tie were replayed the next day. Spain and Italy
drew 1-1 in the first quarter final match, in the replay held the following day
only four Spanish players and seven Italian players were fit to play.
The final between Italy and Czechoslovakia was the only occasion that two
goalkeepers captained their side in the final.
Italy beat Czechoslovakia 2-1 in extra time after the score was tied 1-1 after
90 minutes.
Interesting Facts
The 1st High School driving course was introduced in February 1934 in
State College PA. The legal driving age in Italy is 18, in Brazil it is also 18
and in the USA it is 16 years old.

Giorgio Armani, born a day after the 1934 final (July 11, 1934) is an Italian
fashion designer. His love for the game of soccer has seen him design suits
