This world cup saw a 16 team straight knockout format. The USA was the last team to qualify beating Mexico in Rome just three days before the tournament started. This World Cup was the only time in history that the trophy was not defended by the previous champions. Uruguay who won in 1930 chose not to send a team to Europe. Argentina refused to bring a full strength squad as they feared losing players to teams in the Italian league. Matches that ended in a tie were replayed the next day. Spain and Italy drew 1-1 in the first quarter final match, in the replay held the following day only four Spanish players and seven Italian players were fit to play. The final between Italy and Czechoslovakia was the only occasion that two goalkeepers captained their side in the final.
