2013 – 2014 Annual Report - Pope John Paul the Great Catholic
2013-2014 Annual Report At the Heart SAINT our mission Rooted in the Dominican tradition of prayer, study, community and service, Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School is committed to the formation of youth with special emphasis on the ethical development of the students. We strive to provide an environment where students can grow in the image of Jesus Christ while developing intellectual, theological, and moral virtues. As a Diocesan School, we prepare each student for a life of faith, service, and integrity. dear friends, The true beauty of our school rests in Christ – the Giver of all that is good. Architecturally, He dwells at the very center of our school, giving the building a geometric balance with the chapel as the focal point. None of this is by accident: it was all very carefully planned so that Christ would be at the heart of the school. Within the community of people – students, teachers and staff members – God is found at the heart. At the heart of Saint John Paul the Great are people, events, academic programs, and activities that contributed to the uniqueness of the 2013–2014 school year. On April 27, 2014, we witnessed the canonization of our patron, Pope John Paul the Great, a pope that many of us knew and loved. This rare event was very important to us and marked a high point in the academic year, and in the history of our school. We commemorated the canonization in a variety of ways - including officially changing our name from Pope to Saint - because Saint John Paul the Great is our hero! Throughout his lifetime, John Paul was a witness to Christ. He overcame many challenges by cooperating with grace and seeking union with God. Our mission is to do the same – cooperate with grace and lead our students toward heaven. I am pleased to present the 2013-2014 Annual Report of Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School, honoring the donors whose support has made an impact on the lives of our students. Many thanks for all that you’ve done, and will continue to do, in support of our mission. Your contributions of prayer, time, and talent make a difference in so many ways. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and dedication to our great school. Yours in Christ, Sister Mary Jordan Hoover, O.P. Principal page one SAINT let’s celebrate! At the Heart of Sainthood With the canonization of Saint John Paul the Great, our school’s name underwent a change. To announce the decision, Sister Mary Jordan Hoover, principal, stood in front of the student body and read a brief letter written by Bishop Loverde officially giving his permission to change the name of the school to Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School. Amidst cheers and applause, Sister finished the letter, reading aloud: “As the Church is blessed with our newest saint, may the school also be blessed with a renewed intensity of prayer, and continued vigilance in teaching our young people to meet the challenges of our contemporary world.” Sister Mary Jordan went on to address the students:“Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, you are our new leaders. We’ll need new traditions, new cheers for sporting events, and maybe even a school song! Once a saint, always a saint! We’re never going to change the name of the school again. We will be Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School forever. And, I know you will have the creativity to help us make the change in our hearts and in our community, so that future generations will know Saint John Paul the Great!” At the Heart of Sainthood “Take a Hike!” – an outdoor adventure celebrating St. John Paul, Outdoor Enthusiast In the weeks following the canonization of Saint John Paul the Great on April 27, 2014, we took time to fully celebrate this monumental, once-in-a-lifetime event in the history of our school, the Church and the world. In the spirit of Saint John Paul the Great, a host of events were held so all could celebrate including: “See the Beauty!” – professional and student art exhibits, celebrating St. John Paul, Lover of Beauty Strike a Chord” –a musical concert, celebrating St. John Paul, actor and patron of the arts “Party like a Pope” – a school-wide day of prayer, sports, and cake, celebrating St. John Paul, Champion of Youth “Let it Steep!” – a women’s tea and reflection on the ‘feminine genius’, celebrating St. John Paul, Teacher and Writer “Play it Again!” – an encore performance of The Jeweler’s Shop (a play written by then Karol Wojtyla), celebrating St. John Paul, Playwright “Raise a Glass!” – the Family Association gala and auction, celebrating St. John Paul, Friend, and Lover of Life! Self-Study and School Improvement Plan At the Heart of Excellence 2013-2014: School Improvement through Self-Study Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School went through a rigorous accreditation process to achieve re-accreditation from AdvancED, a global accrediting agency. The re-accreditation process is repeated every five years. To be accredited by AdvancED, schools must meet high standards that are research-based; complete a comprehensive self-study; develop an improvement plan; and participate in an external review by AdvancED. This process was important for John Paul the Great, and serves to keep the school engaged in the formal process of continual improvement. Led by Mr. Nicholas Fonte, John Paul faculty and staff members were engaged in the long and detailed process of completing the self-study through the Self-Assessment Tool for Schools during the 2013-2014 academic year. We spent seven months studying and documenting everything JP the Great does well, and areas in need of improvement, based on the standards’ indicators. Committee discussions, individual research, interviews, and the acquisition of relevant artifacts took place at faculty meetings and professional development days. Dialog about our school improvement planning engaged teachers in discussions of each committee’s work, the organization of documentation, and assessment of student learning. One of the ways we gathered feedback from our stakeholders was through surveying. Surveys were carefully analyzed and incorporated in the self-study. Parents, teachers, stakeholders and students agreed on the strengths of JP the Great and identified areas for school improvement. JP parent participation exceeded the expectations of AdvancED. The self-study and preparation for the external review team gave us a strong sense of how we have progressed as a school: • Our academic programs challenge our students to learn. • Our test scores are higher than the national and state averages. • Students are engaged in the learning process and enjoy the JP experience of the House System, fine arts and athletics. • Members of our school community are being challenged to follow Christ, wholeheartedly. In our accredited academic programs, we strive to fulfill our school’s mission rather than simply impart information for the sake of test scores and report cards. Founding members of our administration and faculty worked together to plan and implement course offerings that enable students to think clearly and critically, taking deliberate care to unfold concepts in light of our faith and Christian heritage, where applicable. Each year our highly qualified professionals formally review and enhance the curriculum, ensuring an effective, truly authentic Catholic education. At the heart of our curriculum, and the most unique feature of our academic program, is our 4-year Bioethics Curriculum©. Developed specifically for this school, the flagship Bioethics Curriculum© is found only at Saint John Paul the Great, and provides students with the foundation needed to address the serious medical and ethical issues of the 21st Century. This required course of study is based in philosophy, science, and ethics and trains students how to think and reason. The substance and process of the curriculum teach students how to make wise personal decisions, as well as enable them to promote responsible ethical policies and practices which advance the common good and foster greater respect for the human person: Three central concepts permeate the entire Bioethics curriculum as recurring themes: (1) the exalted dignity of every human person because of his or her God-given powers of intellect and free will to choose good, (2) the capacity for ethical reasoning present in human nature, and (3) the relation of ethical reasoning to the common good and to genuine human fulfillment and happiness. All teachers at Saint John Paul the Great receive introductory training in Bioethics. The Bioethics Curriculum© complements the accredited college-preparatory curriculum in certain core subjects so that students are able to cross-reference and apply bioethical concepts to various historical events, literary themes, scientific facts, and religious tenets. page five At the Heart of Prayer, Service and Achievement Summer 2014: Rome, Poland, Haiti, and Ohio John Paul the Great students had many opportunities for pilgrimage, service, and seeing the world during the summer following the 2013–2014 school year. Thirty-seven students accompanied by chaperones and friends went on a pilgrimage to Poland and Italy in thanksgiving for the Canonization of our patron, Saint John Paul II. They attended Mass at the Vatican, visited Krakow, Auschwitz, and Siena, among many other amazing sites. One week later, 15 JP students went on mission to the Dominican Republic. On the border of Haiti, in Bánica, they worked with underprivileged youth, laid concrete floors and witnessed great joy amidst poverty. And, only a week after Bánica, another group of 25 students went to a youth conference at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, with 1,600 other students from around the country. Our JP students were busy joyfully praying, serving and exploring this summer! Our chaplain, Fr. Bjorn Lundberg, attended all three trips offering daily Mass with the students. Leadership Training for SLA At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, the Servant Leadership Association (SLA) representatives from the eight Houses participated in a Leadership Seminar held at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Woodbridge, Virginia. The seminar was led by Mr. Peter Ferrito, the sole proprietor of Teens-2-Teams, an organization he created which works with high school sports teams, bands, and student government organizations. With the assistance of President Monica Loesel (2014) and Vice President Alex MacDonald (2014), the SLA representatives learned valuable skills about working together, had the opportunity to practice leadership techniques, and expressed some of their new ideas. First Indoor graduation For the first time in our history, rain prevented an outdoor graduation. Plans were quickly changed for an indoor graduation in our beautiful gymnasium. Overflow seating was available in our theatre with a big screen televising the graduation. page six March for Life 2014: Even the weather can’t stop JP the Great! Attending the March for Life definitely required patience and determination by JP students, faculty and staff in 2014! After Christmas break, the JP community gathered for a pro-life assembly in preparation for the March. Guest speakers included David Bereit, National Director of the prayer campaign to end abortion known as “40 Days for Life” along with his wife, Margaret. Several students also spoke about their past experiences at the March for Life and encouraged their fellow classmates to attend. By the time the March for Life drew near, almost 400 students had signed up to attend, which was the highest number in school history. But as January 22nd approached, weather conditions were poor and Prince William County decided to cancel school for the day. Despite this being a potential day off, nearly 200 students still arrived at JP bright and early to attend the March for Life! It was inspirational to witness the zeal and dedication of John Paul students and staff in support of life. Before heading into Washington, D.C., for the March, students attended the Diocesan “Life is VERY Good” Youth Rally and Mass at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA, joining thousands of other teens from across the country to pray and celebrate life with our very own Bishop Loverde. Service Day Thanks to the leadership and organization of the Servant Leadership Association, more than 100 John Paul students, teachers, and parents provided service in seven locations in the Northern Virginia area. With happy hearts, the JP community: • Sang and played bingo with residents at Caton Merchant House in Manassas • Entertained children with craft projects at the Thurman Brisban Center shelter for the homeless • Painted rooms for new residents and raked leaves at Mary’s Shelter in Fredericksburg • Helped with yard work at St. Francis Church • Played games with residents at Greenspring Nursing Home in Springfield • Assisted at the Holy Trinity 10K honoring wounded soldiers • Helped with cleaning and organizing at Lorton’s Attic One of the on-site supervisors remarked, “All the students were friendly, motivated, and willing to assist with all of our volunteer needs. I was so impressed with this group of students and they made my volunteer experience absolutely WONDERFUL!” Photos below (L-R): 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student; Saint John Paul the Great is recognized as a Catholic Honor Roll School of Excellence for the second time; Academic Awards Night page seven 2014 Christ the Teacher Award Recipient: Sister Mary Brigid Burnham, O.P. During our Academic Awards Night, Sister Mary Brigid Burnham, O.P., received the Christ the Teacher Award. This award is given each year to an educator at Saint John Paul the Great to recognize and affirm the high quality of instruction and witness provided. Selected by students and colleagues, the recipient is announced at Academic Awards Night, and then offers a personal reflection to the graduating class. Esteemed Graduates, I am so honored to stand before you one more time and tell you one last story. A man came into a certain kingdom, bragging that he could teach anything to anyone. His bragging came to the ear of the king, who hauled him into court. “We don’t tolerate empty boasts in this kingdom!” he thundered. “Begging your majesty’s pardon, it’s no empty boast. I can teach anything to anyone! Anyone at all.” “Then teach my horse to fly,” said the king. “I’ll need a year,” said the man. “If you fail, you will be put to a slow, horrible death.” The man left the king with head held high, whistling. Onlookers wondered, “How can you be so happy? You’re going to die in a year!” “A lot can happen in a year. I might die of natural causes. The king might die. The horse might die. And, I just might teach that horse to fly!” Graduates, Christ has come to earth to teach you to fly. It’s impossible, I know. But with God, all things are possible. Why not fly? Why not TRY? You know “the only mistake in life is not to die a saint.” Knowing you as I do, I am confident that you will not make that mistake. A saint flies to the Lord, carrying all of creation with him: all of creation, meaning leaves and mountains and friends and sports and children and jobs. Through the Angelic Warfare, the Living Stations, our charisms, the Total Consecration to Mary, we have been learning to fly. We have fought spiritual desolation and sought spiritual consolation. We have suffered the loss of parents—Kara Diaz, Teri Depukat, Ada Simpson, Teresa Suarez, and Julie Meier; sister, Corrine Stryker; and classmates Sarah Jakielski and Kenny Diaz; their deaths have reminded us all that the only mistake in life is not to die a saint. You will be saints. You will pray and sacrifice until the Nigerian girls are safely home. You will choose your career carefully, remembering “The job or career that doesn’t leave time for daily Mass isn’t much of a job or career.” Your hard-earned money will go to find cures for leukemia. You’ll spend time helping friends and family break drug addictions. You’ll respect and honor your spouse. You’ll be a voice for the silent. And you will love and live and give and thrive, as you grow into the freedom of the immortal sons and daughters of God! If Christ has taught you through me, Christ has certainly taught me through you. You are the Chosen class of Saint John Paul. Stand fast in faith now in the world’s darkness, and fly at last to God as immortals, brave warriors and beautiful princesses, in your true home, with all our loved ones—in Heaven for eternity. May we all celebrate our reunion there, in infinity-14! page eight Saint Michael the Archangel Scholarship Fund 2014 graduate André Michell initiated a new scholarship before he left John Paul called the Saint Michael the Archangel Scholarship Fund. Remarkably, André made a commitment of $50,000 over the next 25 years to help two students each year attend JP by offering each a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship focuses on leadership potential and the applicant’s determination to “pay it forward”. André is a living example of this scholarship. He transferred to John Paul at the beginning of his junior year after living abroad in Kuwait. Receiving financial aid was key so that he and his younger sister could enroll. André found a home at JP where he felt supported academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. He hopes his grant will allow more students like him to be able to experience the beauty of a John Paul education in the future. André went a step further and challenged his classmates to add to the fund or to other tuition assistance scholarships to “pay it forward”, and some joined him. He hopes current students and alumni will consider sacrificing just one meal out or one movie ticket to help other potential students come to John Paul and benefit from its nurturing environment. André now attends the United States Military Academy at West Point where he will continue the tradition of giving back to his country and his community. He is an excellent example of what it means to be a Great student. We can’t thank him enough for his thoughtfulness, generosity, and leadership. Saintly Blessing Rays of light symbolize the heavenly paradise of the Father’s house where our patron, Saint John Paul the Great, is now numbered among the saints. In a state of beatific vision, he sees things as they are; therefore, past, present, and future are represented in this painting. Of the many places that are associated with John Paul II, his homeland of Poland is represented in the lower right hand corner; a monument in Gdansk, symbolizing the Cross’s triumph over communism. From a “far away land” he was elected pope of the universal church, symbolized here by the Vatican. As pope, he established World Youth Day, an encounter he would cherish throughout his life. In this painting, Saint John Paul II blesses our school. The Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia is on the right, and leading the procession are those sisters who arrived for the foundational years of our school. Also in the procession are the many sisters who will be here in the years ahead. His strong hand holds the rosary, a symbol of both Pope John Paul II’s apostolic motto, Totus Tuus, in reference to Our Lady, and St. Dominic’s reception of this devotional prayer, for here at Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School, we live the Dominican charism united with the spirit of Saint John Paul the Great. page nine Commemorative oil painting by William J. Concurrently, while meeting all of our financial obligations, we aim to provide financial aid to qualifying families, allowing for an economically diverse student body. Managing Debt Saint John Paul the Great holds a debt to the Diocese of Arlington for the construction bond issued so the school could be built. At the close of the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the construction debt was $19,365,238. Since our opening in 2008, our fiscal priorities have corresponded to our school’s mission and goals. In partnership with the Diocese of Arlington, Saint John Paul the Great has focused on opening a successful, self-sustaining school. During the years 2008-2014, the Diocese of Arlington provided us with $11 million of start-up debt service to assist us in growing the school and establishing our school’s culture. Enrollment growth has been a key to our fiscal stability. In fall of 2013, 160 freshmen entered as members of the class of 2017. In 2014, our freshman class grew to 200. This increase in enrollment is essential for us to be self-sustaining. With stable, increasing enrollment, and projected revenue and expense trends, we anticipate paying back the construction bond debt by 2023. page eleven . At the Heart of Team Work Students show support for those impacted by leukemia through the now-annual “Orange Out” basketball game. The Varsity Cheerleading team won first place in their division at the Mega-Jam Competition in Hampton, VA. The Women’s and Men’s lacrosse teams both took first place at the Steward School Tournament in Richmond. Swimming sent more athletes to the VISAA state championships than in any previous year. JP hosted its first playoff soccer game for the VISAA State Championship. The men’s track team won first place at the Catholic State tournament, and the women’s team took third. Thank you to our donors who made it possible for us to refinish the gymnasium floor! A school record was set with seven consecutive victories and many individual records were established, including Zak Perroots reaching the 4,000 career rushing yard mark. At the Heart of Expression The Saint John Paul music program grows each year. The variety of instruments and number of talented students gets bigger, and their concerts get better and better. From chorus to band to orchestra to electric guitar ensemble to string quartet, the opportunities are numerous for performers to find their place. Each year students perform at a number of concerts, including the Saint Cecilia concert, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, the Spring Musical, as well as off-site performances in the community, such as the Occoquan Ladies Christmas Party in 2014. Music director, Kelly Kingett, also leads her musicians each week at the JP Mass, providing beautiful worship music for the community. As the program grows, so does the need for instruments. Please contact Amy Thomason, Director of Advancement, for a current “Instrument Wish List” for donor consideration. Our amazing drama department produced a record seven spectacular shows during the 2013-2014 school year! The drama classes performed The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Gift of the Magi, A Man for All Seasons, and Hooray for Justice. The JP Drama Club produced Romeo and Juliet and Fiddler on the Roof. In addition, to celebrate the canonization of Saint John Paul the Great, faculty, staff and students came together for an encore production of The Jeweler’s Shop, a play written by Saint John Paul the Great when he was known as Father Karol Wojtyla.
