I tend to see things differently and I would like
for others to see things from my perspective.
Kayla Miller
Bringing glimpses of my reality to those that have never been is
one of the reasons I’ve stayed with photography for so long.
Marshall Rowe
To me, art has always been a place of freedom and expression. It gives anyone a chance
to express him or herself, a way to let loose and put his or her feelings to paper. Art has
and always will be a good way for me to live my life happy and healthy.
Jessica Slaby
Much of my life was spent coping with the aspects of this disease and I
came to find my greatest tool in my possession was my art making ability.
I use my skills to work through the complex mental, physical, spiritual, social,
and economic difficulties that this disease constantly generates in my life.
Ronald Jason Van Hoose
It makes me happy when I am very frustrated. It is excellent to see
my art in shows. Art challenges me and takes me to other places.
Jennifer Klein
[My] finesse in the arts is an endeavor to reveal, how the mind of a
schizoaffective person functions in an addiction flavored world, intertwining
these themes with current-day issues in societies, political and secular.
Brandon LaBonte
My art allows me to be a voice within the disability community where I passionately
advocate, empowering others to overcome exclusion in this society at large.
Ricci Michaels
Photography has opened me up to new experiences,
I notice things that I never gave much thought to previously.

Preface
The 17th annual Accessible Expressions Ohio Exhibit is perhaps the most diverse
display of art you will see this year. The work is mischievous, clever, thought-provoking,
beautiful, political, and whimsical. The 77 artists involved tell their stories through camera
lenses, watercolor, tempera, pencil, metal, and more.
Until you read their stories or meet them, you wouldn't assume disability is part of
these artists’ identity. In fact, most would introduce themselves as artists, sports fanatics,
outdoor enthusiasts, or community activists first. The word disability means something
different to each individual, mirroring their own interpretations of art. Disability may mean
utilizing adaptive tools, overcoming stereotypes, and finding alternative creative outlets, but
it does not singularly define their experience as individuals or artists.
Each piece of art and accompanying biography portrays an incredible image of talent,
passion, and strength. But don’t take my word for it. These artists speak for themselves.
The creativity on display may be an outlet for healing, a source of income, or an exploration
of form that results in new perspective for both artist and viewer. The process of creation,
while primarily individual, is tied to layers of social construct and experience. You will see
both internal expression and external interaction in this art. It is our hope that this show will
challenge notions of dis/ability and inspire your own creativity and acts of inclusion.

Accessible Expressions Ohio
Accessible Expressions Ohio (AEO) is a statewide, juried, visual arts exhibition and tour
adding to the richness of cultural diversity throughout Ohio. The program began in 1996 to
challenge perceptions and raise awareness about the arts and abilities of every citizen. AEO
advances creative careers, offering Ohio artists with disabilities the experience of submitting
work to an adjudicated call for art and exposure to new state and national audiences who
are potential patrons.
Beginning each fall, artists of all ages with any disability are invited to respond to a Call
for Art and submit photographs of two or three-dimensional visual artwork. Individuals
may enter as Youth (under age 18), Emerging, or Professional artists. Qualified and
respected adjudicators from the local arts community select artwork based on the quality
and in consideration of each entrant’s abilities. Over 130 pieces of art were submitted to
the 2012 Call for Art.
The artwork is exhibited at an opening ceremony and a second adjudication is conducted
to determine the first, second, and third place winners in each category, as well as Best
in Show and People’s Choice. Following the opening ceremony, the artwork is divided into
tours and travels across Ohio to inclusive settings in order to continue advocating for arts
and inclusion.

VSA Ohio
Since our founding in 1986, VSA Ohio has evolved to become a community that helps
inspired artists connect with their passions. Bridging arts and disability, our programs and
services are constantly growing to provide inclusive environments and opportunities for
people with disabilities to celebrate life through the arts. We work hard to advocate for
accessibility and equality by advancing careers and communities in the creative sector,
and improving the academic achievement of Ohio’s students through arts integration.
We are an affiliate VSA, the international organization on arts and disability founded by
Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith in 1974, a program of The John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts.

I participate in Artists’ Open Studio in Huron County. I have been making drawings
and paintings at the Painting Studio for two years now and I especially like to make
pictures of mosaic designs. I use all kinds of things to make art: pencil,
watercolor, acrylic, and pastel. In 2010, I began attending Artists’ Open Studio
Ceramic Studio where I make things with clay. At home I like to do needlepoint,
latch hook, word puzzles and read books. I live with my husband Dennis in
Norwalk. We both work at Christie Lane Industries. We like to go out to eat and
watch movies together.

Kathy Baldwin in one of Open Door's resident comedians and her infectious humor
inspires a lot of giggles at the studio. Some of her jokes are a little "blue" which
makes sense since it is also one of her favorite colors. Her artistic style is similar to
her personality, playful and upbeat. She prefers traditional folk art imagery such as
houses, flowers, and landscapes. Her artistic signature lies in the way she divides up
an image into geometric and colorful shapes. One of her artistic aspirations is to
build an actual playhouse and then to paint it. Someday she would also like to be in
a major art show and sell lots of paintings. This would be beneficial to Kathy as she
loves to go on trips, and some extra travel money could support her explorations.

Columbus
16.75" x 16.75"
Emerging Artist
$70
Jessica Bickley is a kind-hearted young woman with a unique artistic flair. Animals
hold a special place in her heart, especially dogs. Her whole face lights up when she
sees one and she cannot concentrate on anything else until she gives it some
attention. One of her first questions for new friends is whether or not they have a
dog or any other animal. It seems only natural that the majority of her illustrations
are of small creatures. Her style makes the most of a few lines and her imagery is
very stylized and simplistic. When color is added, this imagery creates graphic,
bright paintings. Jessica is very close with her family and is a proud aunt of two
boys. She loves the company of others and hanging out with her friends is her
favorite activity. Aside from making art, she also enjoys horseback riding and
watching movies. Jessica loves the color yellow, which is just as bright as her
personality.

Brandon Boggs
Watercolor

17.25" x 21.5"
Emerging Artist
$115
Brandon Boggs describes himself as a social butterfly. His exuberance about art is
infectious and he adds much to the studio dynamic. Brandon views are an
"emotional outlet" and his sketchbook shows the various sides of his personality.
From drawing more realistically to attempting new subjects, he loves pushing the
limits of his skill. Brandon has created some very successful, large-scale paintings in
his signature, colorful style. It is hard to believe that Brandon is relatively new to
painting, and he has certainly made up for lost time. He is no longer intimidated by
a blank canvas and he has challenged himself to paint bigger and better that he
ever imagined. A bit of a perfectionist, Brandon sees room for improvement in his
work. He hopes to fine tune his style in the years to come. He dreams of creating a
video game with his own characters one day. This is certainly an ambitious goal,
but perhaps Brandon's beloved newborn nephew will one day play that game.

Janet was born in Mason, West Virginia, and has lived in Athens for 48 years
amongst family and friends. When Janet was 18 years old, she picked up a pocket
110 camera and has been taking photographs since. Janet joined the APP in spring
2008, participating in three juried Athens Photographic Project (APP) exhibitions,
three VSA Ohio exhibitions, and recently completed her second year of digital
classes. Janet is inspired by the natural world. Through her photographs she
reflects on the beauty and depth in the life of plants and animals, which she feels
often go overlooked in our daily lives. By exhibiting photographs, Janet wishes to
show that people living with a mental illness are able to contribute to the
community and hopes this knowledge will inspire others.

I was born with a tumor in my left eye, which eventually took my vision to mere
shadows. At the age of 17, I was in an auto accident that resulted in further
damage to my sight, along with severe facial scars and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
from which I had trouble remembering and speaking. Art has always been a part of
my life, and even more so after my accident. I used art in my recovery to
communicate with others and to give me something to do since I wasn’t able to go
anywhere. I continue to use my art today as an art and special education teacher
to allow my students to create new projects.

animal pictures. My favorite job at Christie Lane Industries is helping with the

Seasons Memories
Kathy Gallant
Mixed Media
Worthington
10" x 10"
Professional Artist
$240
In Seasons Memories, I’ve tried to capture pictorial vignettes of memories of
seasons past, using thin sheets of copper that I embossed and then dapped to
encapsulate the moment. For color I used alcohol inks which when mixed, are as
chaotic as nature, then distressed the images to accentuate the copper, which lay
beneath. A glaze was added to give the pieces an enameled feeling, as well as to
protect the inks. Finally they were mounted on paper that I mottled with inks and
tiny nature motifs.
Can you figure the images that captured the following memories for me?
Catching rays on lazy summer days.
Star light, snow night. Should I take flight?
Spring wakes. Cocoons break!
Mom’s blooms, what fragrant fumes!
Dragonflies flitter, make our creek a’glitter.
Autumn’s wind create leaf din.
A rainbow’s glow follows cloud flows!
Ground a’crackin’, but fun’s not lackin’.

Tory has a very representational style and she implements her ample skill set to
draw and paint intricate pieces. From the armor of an armadillo to the scales of a
mermaid, Tory's signature style is certainly her affinity to detail. Perhaps it is the
nature of repeating the small brushstrokes that she is attracted to, as she also
enjoys knitting, another repetitive activity. She claims that art is a great way to
reduce stress and really enjoys unwinding with her friends at the studio. Tory is
always willing to broaden her art repertoire and depict more challenging subjects.
She has experimented with drawing and painting British Royalty, which is fitting
since she is named after two queens and is very interested in portraiture. Tory has
even begun working three-dimensionally, which is unchartered territory for her.
With her boundless enthusiasm and ability for finesse, there are no doubts that
Tory's portfolio will continue to diversify and show even more of her talents.

Tony Hoover, a lifelong resident of Columbus, began making art more than twenty

that he has painted hundreds of works. Tony brought a fantastic work ethic, unique
style, and a lot of experience with him when he began at Open Door in early 2011.
Of his style, he says, "I work in colorful acrylics, specializing in landscapes." His
painted creation is comprised of many short, staccato brushstrokes that work
together to create an image. Aside from art making, Tony has been an employee at
Kroger's for over a decade and he works as an ambassador for the Prenike Romich
Company, a manufacturer of communication devices. He strongly advocates for
people, like himself, who are severely speech impaired who benefit most from
technological advances in communication devices. Tony is a consummate sports fan

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, I am naturally gifted with artistic ability. My aptitude with
art in grade school saw me take on many projects for my teachers. My fifth grade
teacher, Mr. Valentino, said that I had a heck of an imagination! I thrive on
drawings of social, political, portraits, and cityscapes. I identify as an art illustrator
whose mediums are charcoals, graphite and colored pencil, pastels, and ink. My
true love is drawing. I mostly excel in that field and have won several awards along
the way. One was being nominated for the Governors Arts Awards in 2010. I have
been featured in several publications, including the Columbus Dispatch, The Other
Paper, Free Press, Street Speech, Columbus Alive!, and an appearance on a local
radio station. It has been quite a journey so far. Not too shabby for a once
homeless man with internal issues and no direction in life.

Swirling lines, vibrant colors, elongated animals, rainbows, and people are the mark

makes me happy when I am very frustrated. It is excellent to see my art in shows.
Art challenges me and takes me to other places." Her strongest pieces have a story
to them that continue to develop through the process of creating the work. She
brings her passion for visual storytelling to life through the vibrancy of her colors

Brandon was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, raised in Coolville, Ohio, and

independently shown his work in galleries and cafes. His work emphasizes visual
relationships and “flustered symmetry,” including shapes and particular details.
Brandon’s finesse in the arts is an endeavor to reveal, “how the mind of a

themes with current-day issues in societies, political and secular. Since 2000,

I was born June 21, 1994 in Kettering Ohio. In my spare time, I love to do art, knit,

am determined to lead an independent life. I am a strong and capable woman
ready to learn and grow. My painting “A Wonderful Life” was inspired by my family
and my life. Each color of the painting means something different to me. After all
the trouble I have endured, the green color stands for hope of the grass always
being greener on the other side; purple is for all the times God has blessed me in
my life; pink is for how many people tell me that I’m beautiful even when I don’t
feel like it; blue is for the days that I feel sad; red is for the blood that Jesus shed
just for me; and gold is for the one golden person in my life, my mother, Holly.

$45
Wind & Water is one of Randy’s few small paintings. Randy enjoys exploring the
movement of the paint and color on large canvasses. One of his first paintings
involved a full size poster board he would take outside, lay in the grass and drip
paint on with squirt bottles. On one particular day, after completing the painting
and walking away from it briefly to step inside, he returned to discover grass
clippings blown all over the still wet paint. A lawn mower, though no where in
sight, had obviously passed by. With some humor and spontaneity, he chose to
include the grass as part of the work. Many of Randy’s works begin with bright
colors in which he gently manipulates, achieving a deeper, rich and “moody-like”
quality, without over-mixing. Currently, Randy participates in the Sky High Arts
program, part of MATCO Services, Inc. He resides in London, Ohio.

was spent coping with the aspects of this disease and I came to find my greatest
tool in my possession was my art making ability. I use my skills to work through the
complex mental, physical, spiritual, social, and economic difficulties that this disease
constantly generates in my life.
Night Storm was a multi-year project that began when my father was diagnosed
with terminal cancer, and just prior, my disease had taken a serious turn for the
worse. I was unable to sleep for literally months on end. My mind was an
unrelenting storm of violence and torment. In this painting I use a storm battered
Ohio landscape and metaphor for my internal nightmare. By projecting my struggles
outward in a healthy and productive way I was able to alleviate some of my
suffering and gain a foothold, however tenuous, in reality. “Night Storm” was
accepted in to the 2011 Area Artist Annual, Butler Institute of American Art,
Youngstown, Ohio.

I have for the last several years have been extremely interested in the relationships
of people, in relationships to themselves, the photographer, and the environments
in which they find themselves. I deal with the emotions of darks and lights,
contrasts and shadows. I deal with daily struggles in life and bring my fight with
depression and bipolarism to my work. My work starts with the snap of the camera.
I don’t usually have a particular project that I work on at any one time. Life is my
project. Trips with the family, parties with the grandkids, 4th of July fireworks, and
just being bored at home are my subjects. I look for the unusual and different. I
choose my subjects based on my gut feeling. I feel like a painter, once I continue
in post-production. Darkening here and lightening there to increase the drama of
my work. I believe I know every part of my photograph personally, when the work
is done. The mood of the work is very important to me.

Pete was born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1965 and moved to Manhattan, Kansas, in
1968 and then to Athens, Ohio, in 1981. He has always had a curiosity with
photography and was among those students in Athens Photographic Project’s first
classes in 2000. Pete was hooked from then on. Although he was anxious to
continue photography, due to circumstances at the time, he was not able to do so
until the fall of 2010. But now, he loves everything about photography—as an art,
as a science, and as therapy. “I like the space that I’m in when I am taking
pictures,” Pete said. “It is a good space. Photography is rewarding in many ways.”
