In My Heart Illustrious Sir Ken Steele Isn’t it wonderful to see so many nobles, wives and friends get involved to volunteer and donate their time? This was witnessed by the number of volunteers that came out to help with the Shrine Golf Cup. A Big Thank You to Tim Hudson and his committee for putting on such a great event. Also I want to thank the Grand Falls Casino for hosting this event – they were fantastic! The income from this event goes to the Shrine Hospital Endowment Fund. Another Big Thank You goes to Ken Ward and his committee for chairing the Shrine Football Game; starting the day with our “Tailgate” at 9:30 in the morning serving eggs, cheese and bacon breakfast sandwiches, followed by the noon lunch of burgers and brats — What a Great Day! Thanks to Steve Hauff and his culinary experts for providing us with such great vittles. While waiting for the game we also had a bean bag toss contest, which a young lady won. From there we went over to the Augustana football stadium for the Shrine Football Game and watched them trounce St. Cloud. We had a great showing at halftime of all the El Riad Shriners that were on the field. Very impressive! Congratulations to Jerry McNary for being our “Honorary Coach” for the game. We also presented four $100 prizes to the winners of the football sales. We also gave away a bike to two children. Also I want to thank our Shrine patient, OFFICIAL CALL OF THE POTENTATE: NOBILITY OF EL RIAD MONTHLY STATED MEETING Wednesday, November 11 Robbie Carroll, for being there. The income from this event is split between our Shrine Hospital Endowment Fund and our transportation fund. On September 19th we held the Pote’s Party at Minnehaha Country Club — what a great time. A Big Thank You to our Pote’s Ball Committee who went over and above Lady Lynne’s and my expectations. Another Big Thank You to all that attended and supported this event. We hope you had a great time! On September 29th my Lady Lynne and I had the honor of attending the Daughters of the Nile banquet honoring their Supreme Queen, Sharon St. John from Albuquerque, NM — what a nice lady. I also want to give Shelby DeVries a Big Thank You for inviting us and also to the Daughters of the Nile for their continued donations to the Shrine Hospitals. In July the Daughters of the Nile presented their second $1 million plaque to the Twin Cities Shrine Hospital and have given a total of $3.5 million to all of our hospitals. What a great partnership the Shrine has with the Daughters of the Nile. There will be much more to talk about next month, but that’s all for now. Thanks again for all your hard work and support — each of you are very important to the success of El Riad Temple! — Ken Steele 7:00 p.m. – El Riad Shrine For the Purpose of Old and New Business Your Attendance is Urgently Requested WEAR YOUR FEZ — DOOR WILL BE TILED Attest: David Neiman, P.P., Recorder Yours in the Faith, KEN STEELE, Potentate EL RIAD SHRINE • SIOUX FALLS • SOUTH DAKOTA 3 November 15 Cactus_Layout 1 10/21/15 12:05 PM Page 4 INDEX El Riad CACTUS Sioux Falls, South Dakota $100 Million Dollar Club ........................... 36 Abbey Road Band ...................................... 38 Ashrama Temple #97, Daughters of the Nile Host Supreme Queen Official Visit ..... 24 Birthdays .................................................... 32 Black Camel ............................................... 13 Calendar ....................................................... 9 Cash Calendar Winners ............................. 17 Chanter Chatter ............................................ 5 Craft and Vendor Fair ................................... 2 Culinary Unit ........................................ 30-31 Fall Ceremonial Luncheon ......................... 18 Fall Ceremonial Schedule ............................ 6 Fife & Drum Corps .................................... 40 Football Ticket Sponsors and Game Winners .................................... 36 Hall of Fame Band ‘The Rumbles’ Calls It Quits After 53 Years ....................... 11 Hillbillies, Outhouse #1 and Back Forty Boys ................................. 16 Hunters with a Common Bond ................... 26 Memorials & Contributions ....................... 13 Motor Corps ................................................ 8 New Year’s Eve Party .................................. 10 On My Mind, In My Heart ............................ 3 Oysters ....................................................... 41 Parting Shot ............................................... 47 Patient Party ............................................... 18 Pote’s Party ........................................... 27-29 Pote’s Trip .................................................. 46 Recorder’s Minutes ............................... 42-43 Roadrunners .............................................. 12 S.D. Once again, the Chanters have been invited to return to 1st Congregational United Church of Christ’s Performance Series! We will be presenting our annual “Voices of the Season” Concert on Friday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. The church is located at 300 S. Minnesota Ave. The event will include a freewill offering for the Twin Cities Shrine Hospital. EL RIAD SHRINE • SIOUX FALLS • SOUTH DAKOTA The concert will include a variety of sacred and seasonal music performed by the Chanters along with special guests, The Singing Boys of Sioux Falls Concert Choir. Other special guests include Paula Hahn, soprano and two alumni of the Singing Boys organization, Brody Krogman, baritone; and Jacob Hubers, mallet percussion. Brody is currently a sophomore at USD and Jacob is a sophomore at Lincoln High School. We are excited to be able to showcase these fine young artists on our concert this season! Congratulations to all the Chanters on an outstanding performance at MSA this past August. The guys did an awesome job in competition, coming in second place right behind the chorus from Aberdeen. All of the competing choruses did a great job as the bar for competition seems to get raised each season! This helps keep all of us on our toes and striving to become better singers as we continue to rehearse every Tuesday evening. The Chanters would like to extend an invitation to any Shriner who loves to sing to come down to the Shrine on any Tuesday night and check us out! We rehearse from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. It is not too late to join us for the upcoming holiday season. We sing a variety of music and have a great time while doing it. Also, if you are in need of entertainment for the upcoming holiday season, check out our ad in the Cactus and give us a call — we would love to share our music with you and your group! Fall is in the air. It was also apparent in Fargo at the MSA. There were certain individuals from a couple of different stellar units that bore witness to this. Moving on, the Steel Drum had a great time performing at the Augustana/Shrine football pre-game tailgate party. We enjoyed playing in front of a nice crowd and interacting with the football players and cheerleaders, as well as the football parents sharing the area with us. On September 17th we had our fall golf outing at Garretson. We had a good turnout of golfers and, as always, had an excellent steak dinner provided by Ron Luke of the Garretson Food Store. On October 2nd and 3rd we had our Fall Fling with our wives and significant others. This year we went to Omaha and stayed in the Old Market area. The trip was organized by none other than Dick “Cranium,” so a big shout out to Dick for getting this put together. There may be more to report on this in the next article. The next performance of the Steel Drum will be at the Fall Ceremonial on November 7, 2015. We look forward to seeing you all there to welcome in our new brothers. Last but certainly not least is our upcoming Rockin’ New Year’s Eve co-sponsored with the El Riad Dance Club. As stated before, this is the final performance ever by the Rumbles. The Rumbles band includes Steve Hough on drums and vocals. Steve is the iron man original of this group, which has been performing all over the Midwest for over 50 years. Other members are Todd Henseler on bass, sax, keys, and vocals; Gayle Adams on guitar and vocals; and Tim Vasquez on keys, guitar, harmonica and vocals. Please read the farewell press release in this issue. So please start making your plans for this epic farewell performance by one of the best party bands of the last 50 years and mark your calendars for Thursday, December 31st, 2015. Ticket information will be coming soon. Respectfully submitted, — Scribe Pro Tem Heritage Funeral Home MATTHEW J. PEPPER JAMES A. JONES DARIN CORCORAN Funeral Directors 4800 S. On Friday, Jerry Hauff and I tried to represent the Motor Corps at the Shrine Cup this year. It was a fun day, so a big shout-out to the Shrine Cup committee! However, our golf game just was not up to par … more like bogey. The following day the Motor Corps debuted our new inflatable at the Shrine Football game. If you didn’t happen to see it, it is a giant bear and it was a hit with the kids. Thank you to Robin Ward and Neil Kotas for making it happen. We also honored “Honda” John Bayer and Neil as Honorary Coaches. The Sunday of that same weekend, eight of the Motor Corps made our way to Minneota, MN for Boxelder Bug Days. What a great parade. The streets were wide and the A great time for a great cause! sidelines were full of spectators. If you have the opportunity to go and be a part of this parade I would highly recommend it. At our monthly meeting in October we were informed that long time member Ron Ingalls would be leaving us. Ron is heading out east and moving to Virginia. On behalf of the Motor Corps I would like to wish Ron the best of luck on his new adventure. I would like to thank everyone again for all your hard work this summer parading and putting on our Poker Run. Without your help and volunteer hours none of this would be possible. Kids Giving Back “The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but reveal to them their own.” ~ Disraeli Thank you to all of you who support our mission at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Twin Cities. We would like to highlight a few of our younger donors from this summer: Patient Katie Winckler from South Dakota raised $3,400 for the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital and collected used prosthetics for her Senior Class Project, which she donated to an organization called Limbs for Life. Sara Alli Searles, Miss Pre-Teen Midwest from Wisconsin, collected 800 boxes of fun, brightly colored latex-free bandages for patients. Patient Annie Hannig from North Dakota raised over $2,500 for the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital by selling “Team Annie” T-shirts in conjunction with a local marathon. Wrestling teams from Minnesota collected over $2,500 by hosting a local Walk-A-Thon. Students from Chippewa Falls High School in Wisconsin collected several bags of new toys and brand new blankets as part of a service project. Briana Weimer and Olivia Shelton from Minnesota collected several bags of new toys and treats for the patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Twin Cities. Always thinking of others, Kim Tran opted to have her guests bring gifts for Twin Cities patients to her own birthday party and ultimately donated several bags of toys and gift cards too. Students at Master Moon’s World Tae Kwon Do in Eden Prairie, MN collected over $24,000 at their third annual Kicking for Miracles event. This brings their three-year total to over $75,000! This is a story of complete strangers that become friends during the Freedom Hunt at Sioux River Wildlife. Shortly thereafter, they discover that they are both Shriners! (As told by Bob Uecker) During a recent hunting outing near Flandreau, SD, I had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman, who was volunteering for the PVA/Freedom Hunt. His name was Warren Jones and he was from Fredericksburg, TX. After a short get-to-know-you conversation, it was brought up that he was from a Houston, TX suburb and in the area for only three months. Warren lived just a few minutes up the road from the Freedom Hunt. It didn’t take long for us to find common ground on many issues. Then he mentioned that he was involved in a Shriners unit in Texas. I was so proud to tell him of my recent induction into the El Riad of Sioux Falls, SD. He smiled and said that he also was a member of the El Riad and several other Shrine organizations across South Dakota. It just goes to show that you never know where or when you are going to meet a fellow Brother. He says hello to Ken as well. Thanks to everyone who helped make this day so special. The best part of this beautiful day was the presence of Tom Mark! We appreciate all your work to positively promote the Shrine and Culinary Unit. We are privileged to serve with you! Tom is the embodiment of what we envision a fraternal Shriner to be, a positive influence on all, for the betterment of all. A PERSPECTIVE BY SAM SOMMERS The way we care for each other and build each other up in times of need says a lot about all of our Brothers. Our unit has a special blend of humor, empathy and lifestyle motivation. Somehow molding oneself into a better individual is easier with all of the fine examples of men our unit has. I know we are not perfect but we accept each other listen and coach each other through our broad spectrum of life’s experiences. Everyone’s story is a parable waiting to bring us all closer to God. Prayers from my fellow brothers continue to increase my faith — Steve Hauff, Culinary Unit President Due to the absence of our regular columnist, the balance of this article is being reported by our newest member, Chris P. Bacon ... Dave Sieler and crew made breakfast sandwiches — a tradition at this football event. I think we served 72 of them and I ate two of them. Thanks to Dave Dierks, Tim Dunn and Jerry Hauff for helping on the breakfast treats. We fed 30 of the Augie spirit squad plus the pep band. The grill masters fixed 96 brats, 80 hot dogs and 130 hamburgers. You guys know how to fix food. Thanks a million. Glad to see Gary Fischer getting involved. For those of you who missed the event, we did miss you! Bruce Boegler showed up after the cleanup was done as he had another company function to work today. Early September found us in beautiful Minneota, MN. Prior to the parade, Chad DeVries pulled out his grill and served up his special-recipe hamburgers, best ever. We then tore up the streets and left everyone watching the parade begging for more. We finished the Mark Richard Parade Tour with a stop in Madison, SD, where we participated in the Trojan Days parade. We were the last entry in the parade, which means they left the best for last. The day ended with a stop at Dave & Chris Duncan’s place at Lake Madison. Everyone had a great time and we thank them for their hospitality. September also included our annual “Ladies Gone Wild’ night. This is a night when we allow the ladies come out to our practice field and run the cars through the obstacle course. Side note: they all ran the course faster than Mike “Putt-Putt” Olawsky. Prior to the Subliminal Marketers Advertise in the Cactus! competition, the Culunary Unit prepared a meal for us. Once the completion started it was all business for the ladies. There was swearing, hair pulling and shoe throwing, and when the dust cleared Vicki Meirose was champion followed by runner-up Shelby DeVries. I cannot wait for next year because it just seems to get better every year. We now turn our attention to our annual fundraiser. The committee has been working overtime and on November 14th we will once again have Abbey Road and we hope to see all of you there. If you like Beatles music then you are sure to have a good time, and if you don’t like Beatles music you too, will have a good time. We had a good turnout of players for that and raised a little money for our Hospitals in the process. Ad Sales Committee: Dave Bangasser and his committee did another fine job of selling ads again this year! Tailgate and Oasis: Thanks to PP Don Jensen for making arrangements, securing a tent and Boy’s and Girl’s bike, tables, and chairs for this event. Thanks to Darold “Disco” Ball and the Potentate’s Aides for ensuring that no one got thirsty. Thanks to Steve Hauff and the Culinary Unit for ensuring that no one got hungry. Public Relations: Tom Johnson did a fantastic job this year for us again this year. He also did a great job as Master of Ceremonies at halftime of the game! Shrine patient: Robbie Carroll, gave a great speech to football team at the player banquet and appeared at the game. Augustana gave us 11 minutes for our program and Tom figured out how to use exactly 11 minutes to make a great impression on the crowd about our Shriner’s Hospitals, and about how great El Riad Shrine is, and about what we do with patients such as Robbie. Potentate: Illustrious Sir Ken We had a game and tailgate party on September 12th, 2015! I can’t help but be proud about El Riad Temple and what a fantastic day we had! Congratulations go to Jerry McNary on being named as our Shriner of the Day! This is one of two fundraisers that we do each year where ALL of the net proceeds support our Shriner’s Hospitals for Children (half for our local Transportation Fund and half for the Hospital fund). Our success is due to all of the hard work from the following (in no particular order). Units and Clubs: Thank you to those Units and Clubs who also participated at the game — Rickshaws for bringing our Potentate and Shriner of the Day to the coin toss in style; Legion of Honor for presenting the Colors of our Country; Chanters for singing our National Anthem; Fife and Drum for selling our plastic footballs. Past Chairman Harland Danielsen did a great job of mentoring and coaching me throughout the year and assisting me on game day. Also PP Dave Neiman and PP Charles Brown for support all year. Honorary Coaches: Thanks to Scott Denney, who coordinated all of the Honorary Coaches wind shirt sales. Thanks to all of the individuals and Units and Clubs that purchased these honorary coach sponsorships this year. It makes a huge difference to our game success. Plastic Football Sales: Mike and John Archer again did a great job of heading up the plastic football sales! Steele for his support throughout the year he made every meeting. Divan Ladies: Thanks for your help at the Players Banquet! Divan: Thanks to all of the members of the Divan for their participation and support each year! What a great group of men we have leading El Riad Temple. Ladies: Last, and certainly not least, thanks to all of the Shrine Ladies who come to the tailgate party and game to support their men. We couldn’t do it without you! Believe it or not, we’ve already begun working on next year’s game. We’ll continue to improve this game as best we can. If you believe you could help us to make this game better, please talk to me about joining this great group of men. Join the Shrine’s $100 Million Dollar Club The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” – Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopaedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopaedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopaedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family. Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopaedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children endowment fund. Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care. Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies. Since opening our three pediatric burn hospitals in the 1960s, our health care system has been at the forefront of innovative programs and treatment techniques that have both dramatically improved the survival rate for children with severe burns and enhanced their quality of life. Here is a brief timeline of the development of our burn care program: 1960s: In response to the growing awareness of a need for pediatric burn care, research and education, the governing body of the Shriners organization passed a resolution at the Imperial Session in 1962 to build and operate hospitals specializing in pediatric burn care. The first one opened in 1966 in Galveston, Texas, followed by those in Cincinnati and Boston two years later. The establishment of these hospitals helped raise awareness of burn injuries and appropriate care throughout the medical community. 1970s: Tremendous improvements in survival rates were made, particularly because of innovative research in excision, grafting, and intravenous feeding. In addition, pressure garments that helped lessen scarring were developed. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati pioneered skin banking – a precursor to future methods of tissue, bone and skin procurement. In addition Shriners Hospitals for Children worked with the United States Fire Administration and Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify burn prevention programs for schools and fire departments. And finally, our Boston hospital began the first school re-entry program for patients. 1980s: Outpatient clinics were added at the three burn hospitals to provide continued care after patients are discharged. Also, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children discovered that early surgical excision and grafting reduces infections, shortens hospital stays and improves cosmetic outcomes for patients. Finally, Burn Awareness Week, a national education campaign, was Top left: Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston Top right: Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati Bottom left: Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston Bottom right: Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California created in an effort to raise public awareness and reduce the number of burn injuries in children. 1990s: Services were expanded at our burn hospitals. Care was made available for non-burn conditions such as port wine stains, congenital ear deformities and other complex wound and skin conditions. In addition, new programs were set up to help burn patients with psychological and social issues, including transitioning back to school and community. And, in 1997, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California opened in Sacramento to serve children with orthopaedic conditions, burns and spinal cord injuries. The hospital has become the busiest pediatric burn center in the western U.S. 2000 - 2010s: Shriners Hospitals for Children continues to demonstrate and be recognized for their leadership in burn care. The hospitals in Boston and Cincinnati received the Press Ganey Summit Award for extraordinary patient satisfaction. All four burn hospitals have leaders who have served as president of the American Burn Association and three of the hospitals have hosted or co-hosted the World Burn Congress, an annual event of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors that brings together approximately 800 burn survivors and their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and firefighters to share experiences and support one another. In the years and decades to come, Shriners Hospitals for Children expects to continue its leadership in pediatric burn care, and its longstanding legacy of improving the lives of children. www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org OSMAR12SHFC EL RIAD SHRINE • SIOUX FALLS • SOUTH DAKOTA 37 November 15 Cactus_Layout 1 10/21/15 12:06 PM Page 38 South Dakota’s Phenomenal BEATLES Tribute Band 14th & Phillips Ave., Sioux Falls , SD Hosted by the El Riad Shrine Sprint Car Unit Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Band starts at 8:00 p.m. Tickets and tables are available online at elriad.org. They were directly responsible for selling 500 footballs at $5 each at the Shrine Football Game. Selling these footballs is a chore the Fife & Drum have taken the lead on over the years with the funds going directly to the hospital. Also thanks to Devon Johnson for helping as well. I am certain my fellow Nobles and fans at the game know they are about to become $5 lighter when they see John heading their direction bellowing “Shrine footballs, $5 dollars!”. I should point out that the 500 total is 100 more footballs than they sold last year. Way to take your game to another level guys! Also proud to report we sponsored Todd Neuberger and Harland Danielson as honorary Shrine Game Captains this year. Our tradition is to appoint two past Brigadiers as our Captain selections each year. As many of you know, Harland has been a valued leader of our Shrine Game over the years and he’s certainly earned a Coach’s distinction! On a side note, sure appreciated the Culinary Unit’s efforts at the Shrine Game, their burger and brat buffet setup at the tailgate is becoming legendary! Speaking of Todd, his daughter Kaity got engaged this past month, so looking forward to him buying drinks at her wedding. And speaking of weddings, Meaghan Johnson, daughter of Kevin & Lady Pat will become a bride on October 10th. Sure fun to see our kids becoming grownups themselves ... Not so fun seeing how old the rest of us are becoming as a result! Finally, would like to welcome Joe Greve and his Lady Kay as the newest members of the Fife & Drum!
