Studies have shown young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. The purpose of this guide is to help you and your family choose the right summer program. There are countless opportunities available locally, statewide and nationally. This guide serves as a quick reference for some of the science, engineering, technology and mathematics programs currently open to students. This year the ED will be held at Washington Elementary School in Point Richmond, nine miles from UC Berkeley. Kids can also choose from Edmo in the Park where sessions take place at local regional parks and participate in programs about local art, science, history or geography. Programs use the Stanford-d.school-inspired innovation process to enhance design and learning. Inspired by expert instructors – many of them professionals in their fields – campers work each week to realize their personal vision in one or more of 14 majors which include video game design, Lego robotics, digital photography, and go-karts. SPEAR offers an enriching learning experience and opportunities for scholars to develop self-efficacy, resourcefulness, and problem-solving strategies, while honing their scholarly identity. SPEAR will focus on building and honing student acumen in language arts, mathematics, public speaking, science, reading, and writing across the curriculum. Application Deadline April 30, 2013 Contact (510) 643-8818 Website summer.berkeley.edu/spear SCI-FY Summer Institute of BFOIT SCI-FY, a project of the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), encourages students of color and women to develop skills, leadership, and an interest in the fields of computer science, engineering, information technology, and the sciences. During this two-week program, SCI-FY facilitates the development of skills in problem solving, teamwork, lifelong learning, multiple ways of communicating, and technological literacy. They serve students in the surrounding areas that include Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties. It features hands-on activities in math, science, and related fields. All sleeping, eating, instructional, and recreational facilities are located on a university campus where camps are held. Seventh grade science and/or math teachers recommend camper candidates who must pass through an extensive qualification process that includes an application, an essay, and a personal interview. 12 Location Stanford University. Contact [email protected] Website www.aauw-techtrek.org/ High School Aged Programs (9 - 12) Arthritis Foundation Science Internship Program The Summer Science Internship Program provides twelve outstanding students with the opportunity to work in leading research and clinical laboratories under the supervision of respected scientists at Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). This internship provides students hands-on experience in the fields of rheumatology and immunology, with a focus on arthritis and related autoimmune diseases. Interns participate in basic laboratory (bench) research or clinical translational/epidemiological research. This program is designed to encourage students to pursue a career in scientific study and research with an ultimate goal of inspiring them to focus their research potential on arthritis and related autoimmune diseases. The program is also open to advanced 8th graders capable of participating in a one-month program away from home. This intensive experience is intended to encourage young minds to continue their interest in these fields. Located on four University of California campuses, COSMOS provides students with an opportunity to work side-by-side with outstanding researchers and university faculty, covering topics that extend beyond the typical high school curriculum. Students explore the fields of environmental design and city planning, experience the culture of the design studio, connect to top CED faculty and professionals, and build a portfolio for their college application. Developed in partnership with UC Berkeley and the Joint BioEnergy Institute, the program seeks to broaden students’ understanding of biotechnology and the careers available in this field. The program also exposes students to career exploration and preparation for the college application process, including field trips to local biotech companies, career talks with scientists, college personal statement support, meetings with college admission and financial aid experts, and college campus visits. Through behind-the-scenes visits and shadowing physicians making rounds in hospitals and medical schools, students make connections with medical professionals, discover how medical students learn through “problem based learning” exercises, gain hands-on experience checking vital signs such as blood pressure, learn how to suture, and view surgery. It’s an intensive seven-week internship program for local Bay Area students (living within 25-mile radius of campus) interested in science, engineering, math, and computer science. Students spend 30 hours a week on the Stanford campus, working in an active research lab under the guidance of a mentor from the lab (typically a graduate student), and attending weekly group sessions that include field trips, presentations, hands-on science activities, and lab tours. Each July, select high school students from across the country and abroad come to Smith College to do hands-on research with Smith faculty in the life and physical sciences and in engineering. To apply for financial aid, complete the financial aid application and submit it with the application. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences. To meet this goal, SMYSP offers a university-based five-week Summer Residential Program and an academic year health curriculum. SMYSP also assists parents, teachers, counselors and mentors by offering them educational resources and training. The students work on existing research projects and are supervised directly by graduate students, post docs and lab managers. This program enables graduate students to serve as supervisors, prepares high schools students for college and serves to strengthen the connections between Stanford and local high schools. This year they offer two programs – the general internships and the history of life internships. Applicants must select the program for which they want to be considered. Students are provided access to advanced topics in mathematics, in a way that is fun and interesting. They review topics that are of great significance in the historical development of mathematics, that are important to current lines of mathematical research, and that have applications in the sciences. 18 Location Stanford University Dates July 14 - August 10 Grades Current 10th - 11th. SMASH Scholars live on campus for five weeks each of three summers (after their 9th, 10th and 11th grade years) with other high potential high school students. SMASH scholars also receive year-round academic support including SAT prep, college counseling, financial aid workshops, and other activities to ensure continued academic success. The program is designed to give participants an introduction to the engineering profession, the academic expectations of college, and university life. Students participate in workshops in topics including bioengineering, civil, computer science, and electrical and mechanical engineering. Participants will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories. Students will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. Participants attend monthly activities and a two week Summer Technology Training Institute. Participants meet with professional experts, academics, and researchers in the fields of information technology, computer science and engineering.
