“PANAMA HAT” (TOQUILLA STRAW HAT) / HANDWOVEN IN ECUADOR
The history of the Panama Hat dates back to the 4.000 B.C. as archaeological discoveries of ceramic
figures appear to be wearing a similar style of headwear. It was in the 18th century that Napoleon
exchanged his conqueror black hat for the striking whiteness of a magnificent toquilla straw hat made
in Montecristi, Ecuador.
Glorified during the 19th century, the Panama hat has since been considered the prince of straw hats.
The name, “Panama hat” was born as a result of hat trades through the Gulf of Panama to their final
destinations. In 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal construction, wearing
this kind of hat, thus increasing radically its popularity around the globe.
Admired at first for its functional qualities, it soon became well known in Hollywood and high spheres,
as it entered the pantheon of hat wear for the stars. Panama hats had their appearance in movies
including Casablanca (Sydney Greenstreet), Gone with the Wind (Clark Gable), The Man Who Would
Be King (Sean Connery), The Last Emperor (Peter O’Toole), Hannibal (Anthony Hopkins), The Year of
Living Dangerously (Sigourney Weaver), just to name a few. In recent years, Hollywood celebrities and
fashion icons have imposed the trend for using Panama hats as a fashion accessory again. Here´s a
brief list of celebrities: Francis Ford Coppola, Harrison Ford, Whitney Houston, Bill Cosby, John F.
Kennedy, Paul Newman, Franklin & Teddy Roosevelt, Sylvester Stallone, Charlie Sheen, Steven Tyler
and many others.
The Traditional weaving of the Ecuadorian toquilla straw hat was Inscribed in 2012 on the UNESCO´s
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Process
THE ARTISAN´S HANDWOVEN PROCESS
The toquilla straw hat is skillfully handwoven from fibres of a palm tree called Carludovica Palmata
grown in the province of Manabi in the Ecuadorian coast. Coastal farmers cultivate the toquillales
and harvest the stems before separating the fibre from the green outer skin. This is boiled to remove
chlorophyll and dried for subsequent bleaching with sulfur fumes over a wood fire. The result is an
ivory color raw material that weavers in Manabi and Azuay use to begin weaving the crown and the
brim of the hat. It could take over several days or even months to create these unique masterpieces,
depending on the quality and finesse of the weave, and therefore a price to fit every budget.
Hat handweaving is a unique skill passed down from generation to generation. In Pile, a costal community,
weavers produce extra fine hats that require specific climatic conditions and involve an exact number
of points in each row of weaving, these are the finest weaving hats, the thickness of the threads
are dental floss like. The process is completed by washing, bleaching and/or dyeing, moulding,ironing,
pressing, shaping and/or blocking, the inner sweatband is sewn in and to finish off the outer trim is
added. And a unique work of art has been completed!
