Retirement isn’t an end.
It’s just the beginning.
A long and successful career should be followed by a
long and happy retirement. But it won’t happen on its
own. You have to be sure you’re investing properly to

now and through your retirement years.

POTENTATES
MESSAGE
Robert Turner, Potentate
The Potentates Trip was April 1-9th.
Anah Shriners and friends traveled to
the Valentin Imperial Maya Resort in
Mexico for a week of sun and fun. We had
a wonderful time and made a lot of new
friends. Bangor Travel told us it would be
a 5 star resort and we would leave wanting
to return again. They were right and we all
had a great time and found ways to relax
and enjoy our time together.
The Second Section attended the
Directors meeting in Springfield MA. The
meeting was sponsored by Melha Shriners
and it was the first time we have had it in
the Northeast. It was with great pleasure
that I accepted an award for our Second
Section at the Friday night banquet for
Second Place in the Stunt Competition.
This was the first time that they entered
the competitions and we should be very
proud for them. They even took time to
visit the Shriners Hospital for Children in
Springfield.
At the Divan meeting on April 19 our
Recorder Larry Hersom and our Treasurer
Julian White announced that they will not
run for their office in 2017. Anah Shriners
will miss these two and hope that they
continue to help Anah in the future. Good
luck to both of you and thank you for all
the years of service.
On April 21 Bonnie and I attended
the Bangor Brewer Shrine Club Ladies
night. The tables were decorated very nice
and the food prepared by Stevie’s Stage
Coach Caters was delicious. The evening
was very enjoyable with many new faces
attending. It was one more wonderful
evening for fun and fellowship.
April 22 was a memorable day for Anah
Shriners. We sold our building at 586
Main Street, Bangor. The building served
us well and will be missed.
On Saturday April 23 we had a Circus
Parade at the Bangor Mall. I want to thank
all who attended to help us look really
sharp.
The Anah Circus is over and I will
have more information for you in the next
Anahgram. It appears that all the volunteers
for both the Bangor and Aroostook Circus
had a fun time by watching all the smiling
faces.
The next BIG event is our Anah/
Kora Joint Summer Ceremonial at Point
Lookout in Northport ME. June 17-19.
Ryan Otis the Director General is working
very hard so everyone will have a fun and
fellowship weekend. There will be busing
to and from all locations to Point Lookout
and the Parade in Belfast. The tickets for
all meals are available at the Shrine office.
Keep in mind our membership goals
for this year. All of us have a major part
in making 2016 a successful year for
membership. Please reach out to any
prospect you have been thinking about
and ask them to join this great fraternity
and learn about our 22 hospitals.
Always remember we are,

The April 12th meeting was held at the
Ed Pellon Center in Machias. Members
present: Capt. Scott Edgerly, Past Capt.
Bill Sinford, Past Capt. Carroll Chandler,
Past Capt.Bill Geel, Ray Ellis, Doug
Monson, Scott Johnson, and Runtz
Farnsworth. Runtz is from that sunshine
place they call Jonesport. Also present
was Divan Rep Brad Prout. Old and new
business was discussed. Waylon Merchant
was made an honorary member. Hope to
see him out to some of the parades. The
next meeting will be held at Pat’s Pizza in
Ellsworth. More to come next month.
Captain Scott says the new boat is
coming along. The unit still has room for
new members, so if you’re interested, you
can read this report and give one of us a
call: Capt. Scott Edgerly at 664-0229; Past
Captain Carroll Chandler at 497-2631; or
Past Captain Bill Geel (sorry-you have to
look up my number in the phone book).
Most of the snow bunnies are back
now, but why didn’t they leave this cold
weather in the southern sunny states,
because we’re trying to get sunshine up
here in Jonesport. I think Noble Runtz is
only happy when the sun shines. Rumor
has it that the Coast Guard Cutter, Wilbert
Terry, was seen in Mount Desert Narrows
chasing Bill Geel’s truck. Now how can
that be?
Past Captain Bill Sinford: I think I
finally got your wife’s name straightened
out. Sorry Holly.
Birthday parties will be happening
in June for Runtz Farnsworth, (Noble
Runtz-just how young are you feeling
these days?)Gene Carter, Anita DeMeyer,
Nancy Madore, Cheryle Monson, Steve
Fernald, and Susan Chandler.
There are no June anniversaries to
report this month.
Time to go..phone’s ringing. Must be
either Forrest DeMeyer telling me I’m late
for the fishing trip or Noble Runtz telling
me the fog is in at Jonesport.
When you buy this distinctive Anah
Shriners 2016 calendar you become
eligible for the
prizes outlined below:
• $300.00 1st Saturday of every month
• $100.00 every other Saturday
• $25.00 Daily (Monday through Saturday)
A great gift for yourself, for a birthday
or any occassion

ORIENTAL
BAND
David Spooner,
President
With the approach of June Ceremonial,
parade season is also once again upon us,
and the band is looking to introduce a
number of new twists to a very busy
season. First off when we head down to
Ceremonial we will hopefully debut the
“Flying Fez” to the world.
However, before we move forward we
must take a moment to look back. We
were all saddened to hear that Noble Carl
McLaughlin’s wife Lady Kay passed
peacefully on Circus Saturday, bringing a
somber note to an otherwise festive event.
But the show must go on and that is what
we did. The band was well represented at
the Circus, both in working at the event
and for our performance on the last
evening in Presque Isle. We even had our
director Noble Carl Allen back with us,
returning triumphantly from his threemonth adventure. I don’t know what he
was up to, but it would seem that he must
have crossed a Klown or two because he
was greeted with a Shaving Cream Pie to
the face, (pictures on our Facebook page)
and other than his infamous mustache he
was already clean shaven.
Those slapstick savants always have
some zany thing going on, which is
something that the band really admires of
our Klown Unit. In reality we are kindred
spirits of sorts, after all they originally
came to the County as part of the band,
before becoming their own unit. This
connection will link the two forever, but
sometimes that likeminded nature can
cause confusion. For instance, I heard it
from one brave man at the circus who will
go unnamed, but does have a particular
love of the Sciences. I see him wrestling
with demons like an Octopus with
tentacles grasping at his very soul, not
knowing who he really is or what he
should be doing. His smile has always
seemed painted on and his fondness for
old Smokey Robinsons tunes always
seemed unhealthy. He looks to the South
for answers but knows It won’t cure that
yearning, he knows that he is no longer
who he once was, soon to be trapped as a

Hello ladies,
The calendar says it should be warmer.
As I write this article it is raining and cool
out. We do need the rain so that is good.
We had a great time at Kosta’s in April and
at High Tide in May. Small group at this
time but it is starting to get busy with
summer plans and all.
We will take a little break for this month
and in July. Hopefully we can find time for
a pot luck picnic in August. I will let you
all know.
If there are widows who would like to
join this group, please give me a call. My
number is 989-3664.
I would like you ladies to know that we do
have the Daughters of the Nile
Organization that also works for the
children of the Shrine Hospitals. We are a
fraternal organization that meet at the
shrine center once a month except August,
December and January.
It is a good way to stay involved with
the shrine beside the widows group. If you
want to know more , just let me know.
Have a good month.

Hello Academicians and Ladies,
As of this writing we have not yet had
the May meeting, so more on that next
time.
Thanks to everyone who made this
year’s circus another success. Your efforts
are much appreciated.
Ritual practice for the upcoming
ceremonial will occur, as usual, on the
Sunday before the ceremonial which is
June 12th at 4pm at the Shrine Center.
We are looking forward to a good
ceremonial at Point Lookout. If you have
not yet been contacted and want to
participate, please let your Section Master
or any officer know, and we will get you
all set up to help. Many hands make for
lighter work.
Yours truly and family enjoyed our
April school break trip to Florida where
we went to Sea World, Universal Studios,
and Disney. Great weather and loads of
fun in the sun.
Well, that’s about it for this month folks.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at
the ceremonial.
Have a wonderful June everybody, and
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!
Remember, never hesitate to contact me
with any questions, concerns, news,
gossip, stories, drama, intrigue, nonsense,
or just plain outright foolishness that you
would like to generously share with our

Greetings Nobles and Ladies!!!!
Another month is here and I’m writing
this early so that I won’t miss the deadline
again. Our St. Patrick’s gig went very
well, but it usually does. I missed it this
year. I was really sad about it, because the
Lads got cool looking hats to wear during
the performance. The hats would have
gone really well with my official Roy
Orbison sunglasses that I wear when we
do that gig. By the time you read this, the
band will have performed at the
Graduations at Husson and Thomas
College and the Special Olympics. Those
events just get us warmed up for the rest of
the gigs in throughout the summer. As I write this the band is nearing
completion of its 2016 parade schedule.
We were invited to Campobello in New
Brunswick to play for the 150th
anniversary of Fenian Raids (as of the
time of writing this event has been
postponed to a later date). I had never
“Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.” – Christopher Reeve
June 2016
11
heard of this, so after a few minutes on the
internet machine, I learned that Fenian
Raids were a plan developed by an Irish
group. The plan was to have a series of 5
attacks, led by the Irish brotherhood (not a
U.S. authorized attack) from the U.S. to
British Ruled Canada and seize major
cities in Canada. The Fenian brotherhood’s
goal was to seize cities and force the
British into negotiations and the Fenians
would exchange Canada for Ireland’s
freedom. Needless to say the attackers
were ill equipped and lacked the overall
organization and military might to
succeed. What they did manage in part
was to create sentiments of unification in
Canada, and the British passed the British
North America act of 1867 creating the
Dominion of Canada. Shortly thereafter
the British started to withdraw its troops
and the new nation was to defend itself. I
found the story of these raids very
interesting, it is worth reading.
In my last Anahgram article, I mentioned
being at a Revolutionary War battle field
and the importance of voting. I have since
seen lots of stuff on TV concerning our
fractured political system and the 2016
race for the White House. It seems that
both sides, have systems in place to sku
results to “party loyalists”. Then I see that
one party has a movement to stop one of
its own candidates who has become the
party’s leader. So even if that candidate
gets the required number, there are
elements to “challenge” the delegates or
offer a 3rd party candidate in the general
election. Which brings me to my point:
VOTING in a Masonic lodge has none of
these games. People who petition the
lodge are investigated and then a
recommendation is made. The members
of the lodge vote in secret. The VOTE in
a Masonic lodge ALWAYS counts.
Masons value EVERY vote; therefore it is
the responsibility of every good Mason to
vote for the good of the order.
If someone, regardless of how well you
get along with them, will represent
Masonry well and be a benefit to the order,
it is your responsibility to vote to elect.
Likewise, if there is someone that you are
friendly with, but would be a burden to the
order, either financially or with other
ethical misgivings, it is your duty to reject
that individual.
Just like the progression of the
“CHAIRS”, where each step provides
incremental knowledge, each member
should provide incremental benefit to the
Lodge. Beyond a good joke now and
again, members are instructed to
encourage and teach new members. Help
other members when in need, and to
recommend those that will do the same to
join.
Do we always do these things? I for one
sometimes fall short. None the less it
should be our goal, not only for the benefit
of the Masonic order, but our nation as a
whole needs the same attention.
I look forward to being on the street
again. For those who would like to learn
more about becoming a Highlander or
learning to play the Highland Pipes or
Drums contact me at pipingleprechaun@

It’s May, it’s cold and I’m penning Junes
Anahgram. At our last Wheeler meeting
we voted on upcoming parade requests.
The first being May 30th in the town of
Prospect. We Wheelers also discussed
having another vehicle clinic to share our
talents for maintenance of our parade
units.
I missed a few Anahgrams due to
technical problems. It seems my computer
was upgrading from Vista to MSN10. I
could not figure out how to get in my
e-mail. Thanks to Lady Jen Lauritsen for
making feel inadequate by simply clicking
on a little box. I really wish you hadn’t
laughed, Jen.
So here’s what my lack of computer
knowledge caused me to miss. All the
personal dates for April and May. Ladies
Sandy Heath and Noble Josh Shute
celebrated April birthdays, while Todd
and Lisa Cotier enjoyed Aprils only
anniversary.
May birthdays were shared by Ladies
Claire Kennedy and Nobles Tom Bouchard
and Todd Cotier. Dan and Sheri Holcomb
were the only May anniversary celebrants.
Now that I’m caught up, I’m pleased to
report that June will see the birthdays of
Ladies Kathy Hoke, Lisa Cotier, Carla
McLean and Noble Dan Holcom. Also a
very happy anniversary to Nobles and
Ladies Tony and Kim Smith and Dean and
Kathy Hoke. Happy Spring!

Hello everyone. As you noticed, for
those that read the Anahgram, I missed
getting an article sent in last month.
Susan and I were traveling, seeing family,
we went to South Carolina for a grandson’s
graduation from Army boot camp. Then
to visit family in Paw Paw WV,
Shenandoah WV, Brunswick MD, and
Naugatuck CT before getting back home
to Maine. A whirl wind two weeks of
being on the road, for sure.
The circus has come and gone, it was a
busy week-end, but a lot of fun. I want to
give a big Thank You shout out to those
that helped us in novelties, you are all
great people and dedicated to circus weekend.
I am hoping to see all of you at the
Summer Ceremonial in Northport. I hope
the weather warms up by then, we sure
haven’t had a very warm spring to use as a
gauge. We still have fun, weather doesn’t
upset us to much.
I want to send Jeff Hamadey condolences
of the loss of his Lady Lin, in April. Our
thoughts are with you Jeff.
Now to catch up with a few mile stones.
Anniversary Wishes for May go to Noble
Randy and Lady Chrystal Adams, belated
congratulations to you.
June Birthday Wishes we send to Nobles
Grayson Wentworth, Ken Perkins, Ryan
Collins, and James Hamilton, and Lady
Jeri-Lyn.
Congratulations for another year as Mr.
and Mrs. Nobles and Ladies Harry and
Judith Pratt, and Kenneth and Nancy Ann
Perkins. Have a great day and enjoy your
special day.
Until next time be safe, and see you next
month.
The last meeting was held at Pat’s Pizza
in Ellsworth on May 3rd. President Steve
Mosley was in Presque Isle taking care
of circus business, so Vice President Ed
Huntley conducted the meeting. Old and
new business was discussed. There were
forty-one members present. High Priest
and Prophet Roger Grindle showed up
with the wrong fez. Have to check with
Lady Julie to find out why he can’t dress
himself. Also, Capt. Dewey Lane showed
up with no fez at all. I hope James Buteau
takes note for his next report. The 50/50
raffle was won by Noble Clint Richardson.
Now I really hope he tells his lady of his
new-found wealth. Meeting adjourned at
7:10.
A Little local news: Most of the
snowbirds must be back by now, because
they all brought cold weather with them.
Noble Steve and Lady Wanda Fernald
survived their honeymoon trip. Past
Potentate Ed Pellon is doing fine. Noble
Allen Hamblen has moved to somewhere
on Newbury Neck (is that the other side
of Surry)? Haven’t heard too much about
what Allen Fernald is up to these days.
Yes, Past Potentate Geddes Simpson, you
did see me and my Lady Faye somewhere
in a ditch on Earth Day cleanup.
Birthday parties going on this month
are for Dave Thomas, Allen Sawyer,
Jason Snowdeal, Kathy Prouty, Cynthia
Lambert, Grace Albee, Anita DeMeyer,
Mary Jordan, Nancy Madore, Steve
Fernald, David Ballard, Holly Cirard,
Kathy Hoke, Scott Picard.
Honeymooners are Dean and Kathy
Hoke, Tony and Wendy McKim, Jesse
and Brenda Thomas, Danny and Bonnie
Taylor, John and Janet Fuller, Irving and
Margaret Smith, Bud Jr. and Kathy Prouty,
Roger and Julie Grindle, Bruce and Cindy
Walls, James and Cynthia Lambert, David
and Brenda Ballard, and Larry and Joyce
Wasson.
Hope High Priest and Prophet Roger
Grindle can remembers his anniversary
better than he can remember is fez.
Whoops! Time to go. I can see my
phone sinking to the bottom. Maybe a fish
will give me a call!

Here we are, June, blackflies, parades,
all that summer stuff. Let’s not forget
Special Olympics on the 3rd and our golf
tournament on the 4th
at the Piscataquis golf course, in Guilford.
Also what I hear, the circus went ok.
Well it looks like my involvement with
the 4x4 unit will be coming to an end. I will
be there to watch parades but not driving
anymore. A big
thank-you to all the friends that have been
made over the years. Those of you who
have not heard, I had quadruple bypass
surgery on April 22.
I’m doing good but, it may be time to slow
down. I will try to keep the Anagram going
for a while but, when your ready Mike? ,
just let me know.
Birthday wishes this month go out to
Paula Hanson, Paul Scott, Alto Shedd,
Charles Libby and that new secretary, Mike
Day. A big thank-you
to Mike. Anniversary wishes go to Neil &
Paula Hanson, Charles& Vikki Ryder and
Dale & Jonie Porter. Rumor has it that Jonie
calls the new dog
Seldon, half the time.
Now comes the hard part, finding
something to write about. Hope to have
parade list next month. If anybody has
something they would like to see in the

for following their father and lending a

Anah Band had a really fun time playing
at the Circus this year. We played along
with the Sebasticook Valley Community
Band this year and we played some great
Circus music. The Circus is one of our
favorite venues to play, the first being the
Special Olympics parade.
We are practicing our parade music as
parade season is about to be in full swing.
We are looking forward to adding a couple
more parades as they come available.
The more people we have, the more we
can earn to give directly to the children at
the hospitals. Practice times have been
changed to the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the
month in Newport. We can practice at the
new Shrine as needed.

It was on to April with Home Depot
Children’s Workshop on Saturday, April
2 with four clowns appearing. Appearing
were four stupendous, incredible, and
talented buffoons in the persons of Papi
(Stan Baker), Spiffy (Kerry Spofford, Fou
(Martin Perfit), and Div-It (Duane Young).

April 8 with Dumpsta (DennisDyer) and
Brody (Tom Boone) handling the kids at
Sedamoch. Gizmo (Lorne Noiles) and
Digga (Scott Knight) followed up with
a Bikes For Books marathon on April
15. They visited (disrupted) the award
sessions at Milo, Guilford, and Brownville.
They rode bikes around the gym without
permission which resulted in them being
humiliated by having to sit back to in the
center of the gym. Being true to the clown
code they soon slipped away and attempted
to hide among the kids. Unfortunately
some of the kids snitched which resulted
in our wayward pair getting still more
attention all true clowns desire.
The first ever Kidabaloo at Cross Center
was a non-stop Balloon twisting event
which was well supported by Tag-Along (Jeff Clark), BoBo (Donny Young),
Dumpsta (Dennis Dyer), Div-It (Duane
Young) and Gismo (Lorne Noiles).
Saturday, May 26 was Circus Kickoff.
Multiple Anah Shrine units assembled in
the Bangor Mall where a well-organized,
dignified parade was to take place only
to be thwarted, impeded, hindered and
disrupted by the antics of several of our
clowns, namely Bo-Bo (Donny Young),
Div-It (Duane Young), Gumpy (Mike
Robshaw), Jappo (Mike Samiya), Papi
(Stan Baker), Slap-Shot (Dale Hatch),
Piggy (Tom Vanchieri), Tag-A-Long (Jeff
Clark), T/C (Bill Taylor), and Kounty
Klown Mega Byt3.
The Bangor Shrine Circus opened on with
two shows on Friday, April 27 followed
by three shows on Saturday and two on
Sunday. Just about every active and
emeritus clown participated for at least one
full day.
May birthday wishes go out to Tag-ALong (Jeff Clark), Jennifer Kennard, and

Reporting for June already! Thought
we’d bring home some warm weather in
the car from our trip south. Didn’t work,
no room. And so as I write this in May, we
still haven’t had any warm weather. I guess
the upside of the cool weather is that there
are no black flies. Yet! I suppose that they
will make their appearance soon enough.
I’d like to begin this note by wishing a
belated Happy Birthday to Noble Ron
Jordan and Lady Elaine Goss. I hope your
special day was special and I apologize for
not including congratulations in the last
newsletter. Left for a 4500 mile drive and
again, didn’t pack my date book. Sorry.
As I write, this year’s Super Supper is next
weekend. It is another sold out event. In
advance, Thank you to all that attended and
supported the convertible unit. I’m sure a
good time was had by all. Again a great full
thankyou for your participation on behalf
of all our unit members. We couldn’t have
a successful event without all of you and
we appreciate your help. It’s all about the
kids after all.
The next event to get ready for this month
is the Nile Supreme Session Ceremonial
Weekend in Northport. Coming right up
June 17 thru June 19. A nice place to hold it
and it’s an important event with something
for everyone. Be sure to participate and be
prepared to have a grand time of it. See you
there!
This month is the birthday month for
Noble Alden Tracy and Noble John Shea.
What a duo! Happy day to you both, but
don’t overdo.
Noble Alden and his lovely Lady
Pam, as well as Noble Bud and Lady
Theresa Morrison both celebrate wedding
anniversaries this month as well.
Congratulations to both couples!
I guess that that’s it for another month.
Couldn’t get any gossip from the crowd that
went to Mexico. Rumors of some topless
sightings there, but a different type than
the topless we’ll see here as we uncover
our summer rides.
Remember to keep all of our Shrine
family in need in your thoughts and prayers.

Common sense tells me it’s not. Never the
less, parade season is upon us, starting
with the Special Olympics week end at U
Maine. We always look forward to this
first parade of the season. The athletes are
our most enthusiastic crowed by far. They
know how to have a good time.
We had a chance to look over the new
digs on outer Broadway recently, It looks
like it will serve us well for many years to
come. We have been able to store our
trailer out back and we can practice in the
parking lot. This is much more convenient
than our previous arrangement. For years,
we have stored our trailer at Whittens
Radio and practiced at the parking lot at
Snap Space Solutions, both in the Brewer
Industrial Park. We want to thank the
owners of these businesses for all they

and Lady Jackie Jones. Happy Wedding
Anniversary wishes go out to J.R. and

may you have many more.
Now to the trivia question of the month.
Last month’s question was in keeping
with baseball. Who is the only baseball
player to hit 20 home runs before he was
20 years old and hit 20 home runs after he
was 40 years old? Answer: “The Splendid
Splinter” Ted Williams, in 1939 and 1960.
This month’s question is: The first
recorded watermelon harvest took place
where and how many years ago?
The time has come to close the “Blotter”
for this month and to remember “IT’S
ALL ABOUT THE KIDS.”
The next Keystone meeting is May 31st.

Under new business Director Patterson
provided an SDA update and announced
that Second Section took 2nd place with
their skit. Also under new business
Second Section Nobles were asked to
think about Wringer safety.
Then
discussions transitioned over to The 7th
Annual Noble of the Year Party which is
scheduled for October 1, 2016 and the
Noble has been informed. This is a sit
down dinner and the meal will be
announced at a later date. Also under new
business, there has been a new idea, The

forth by the Divan. This is a great way for
units to give back to fellow Nobles as
funds are put aside to assist Nobles, when
certain criteria is met.
In other events, reminders were given of

Honoring Those Who Have
Gone Before Us!
“In Memory of Our Departed Brother Nobles”
When Allah calls, then our friends obey and fold thier
tents and steal away. To the land where the crystal
waters flow, where the Beautiful Palms of Allah grow.
Life is a story in volumes three, the past, the present, the
yet to be. The first we’ve written and laid away, the
second we’re reading day by day, The third and last of
the volumes three,is locked from sight
- God keepeth the key.

21st Annual Awards Ceremony
& Silent Auction
May 11, 2016 at Spectacular Events - Honorees: Anah Shriners, Organizational Achievement Award
Bob along with (L to R) Risteen Bahr, CVB Chairman of the Board; Kerrie Tripp, Director GBCVB; Bob and then Tiffany Sun,
Marketing Director Cross Insurance Center.
For over 30 years the Anah Shrine Circus has been an annual family event
for our region. Over those years the Anah Shriners’ dedication to the
larger community and Maine has been very apparent and they have never
lost sight of their mission to help children through the Shrine Hospital.
Recently, Anah Shrine introduced the Feztival of Trees which provided a
fun family-friendly opportunity for folks from northern and eastern
Maine to visit Bangor, enjoy themselves and help support the Shrine
mission. The GBCVB is honored to be presenting the Eagle Award for
Orgazational Achievement to the Anah Shrine for their unwavering
dedication to our community and region.
