Janice Young-Advertising Manager - [email protected] All Anahgram Articles to be sent to - [email protected] by the 10th of the Month catering in Brewer, let’s try and support this event. There are plans in the works for an Open House on July 24th at the new building on 1404 Broadway, look for details in this issue. Have a great July, spend as much time with the family as possible enjoying the summer and remember “We never have so much fun….Doing so much good”. If you can read this, thank a teacher. Yours in faith, Jesse Thomas Potentate Greetings Nobles, July is upon us and June is history, we’ll report on the June Ceremonial next month. The month of May was busy after the Circuses, we had the May 16th Hospital pre-screening clinics throughout Anahland and gained 13 new referrals to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the Springfield staff visited Anah on Thursday, May 28th, and our Clown Unit treated them to a great lobster feed. The next day we our annual outreach clinic at EMMC with the Springfield staff seeing 64 new and old patients. Many thanks to the Springfield staff for making the trip up and to EMMC for hosting the clinic. The new building is taking shape, many thanks to the crew who helped spruce up the place on May 23rd and to our Assistant Rabban, Noble Steve Trimm, for his many hours of time preparing and organizing the auction of the unneeded things on May 30th. Hopefully we will be closing on the building later this month and then real work begins, we’ll need lots of help we’ll keep you posted. July starts out with the Imperial Session in Houston attended by myself, Chief Rabban Bob, Assistant Rabban Steve, Treasurer Julian, and Recorder Larry, along with our ladies. One of the big issues on the agenda will be a dues increase in the head tax we pay to Tampa for all of Anah’s nobles, let’s hope for a no vote? Don’t forget July is football month, the East-West Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic, Maine’s premier athletic event, will be July 18 at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford. The banquet is Friday the 17th at Jeff’s will host the Lobster Bowl Classic at 6pm on July 18 at Waterhouse Field, Biddeford. These two teams are comprised of the best high school football players in the state, North versus South, with all monies collected going to support Shriners Hospitals for Children. Hope to see you there. The Shriners International Imperial Session will be held in Houston, Texas the first week in July, at which time a number of proposed by-law changes to be voted upon. The proposed change most of us are most interested in will be the proposal to increase our per capita tax. We will let you know the outcome in the next Anahgram. That is it for now. Have a great summer. Jesse Thomas, Potentate “FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK” Larry L. Hersom Recorder, P.P. What a great Ceremonial! Many thankyou’s go out to the Hancock County Shrine Club, General Chairman Roger Grindle and all of his committee chairmen, as well as Potentate Jesse and his Lady Brenda. If you didn’t have a GREAT TIME, it was your own fault! We want to welcome all of our new nobles and ladies. Check out our units and shrine clubs and get involved. We are a wonderful organization, so get involved and see how much fun you can have supporting our Shrine Hospitals for Children and Anah Shriners. Our friends to the south, Kora Shriners, Bill Geel, Reporter The Lobster Boat Unit’s first outing was at the Special Olympics in Orono. Four boats, manned by Captain Carroll Chandler, Lt. Waylon Merchant, and Treasurer Bill Sinford, and Member Scott Edgerly. The refurbished Coast Guard cutter was manned by your famous reporter. Everything went well and a nice sunny afternoon was appreciated by all. The unit would like to express its appreciation to Noble Wilbert Terry and Lady Joan for their donation of the Coast Guard Cutter back to the unit. Remember, Noble Wilbert, you are welcome to ride anytime. The Bangor Outreach Clinic team saw 65 patients on May 29th and the Lewiston Outreach Clinic saw 56 patients on May 30th. On the evening of May 16 Lee Kirk, Administrator, had the opportunity to make a presentation at Anah Shrine Center’s 2nd Annual Hospital Day dinner. I would like to take a minute to thank the guys at A & S Auto for helping me re-power the cutter, They went above and beyond. Once again, thanks. The first outing didn’t see the cutter in much action, but we’ve gone from 125 horsepower to a 200 horsepower. I think if there is any trouble, I can tow the whole fleet, especially Lt. Waylon. I’m saving the big black towline for you. It’s only black because I dropped it and got it dirty. We’ll report on June Ceremonial in Ellsworth in our next writing. Hope Nobel Runtz is feeling better and recuperating. Can’t wait to get to Jonesport to see if the sun is still shining. Remember, let’s keep the boats up and running. We have to be ready for the 4th of July parades in Dennysville, Pembroke, Eastport, and finish up in Jonesport. It will be a long day and I hope the sun stays out. Birthdays are Forrest DeMeyer (who came in with a bang and will go out the same way), Ray Ellis, and Perley Merrick. Honeymooners are Doug and Cheryle Monson and Ray and Glenna Ellis. Oops! The phone is ringing. Probably it’s Noble Runtz telling me there is going to be a lot of sunshine and the red carpet will be laid out for me. Noble Ron Bilancia, Reporter Hello Fellow Academicians and Ladies ! We would like to offer deepest condolences to Paul Connelly on the recent passing of his wife Louise. Paul and his family are in our thoughts and prayers. Andy Mays advises us that with regard to his medical issue his treatments have been going well and that he went in for surgery on June 24th at EMMC. We continue to send him our best wishes as he works through this unforeseen medical situation. As of this writing we have not yet had the June Ceremonial in Ellsworth, so more on that next time. We had a very good meeting at the brand new party room at Dysart’s on Broadway in Bangor on May 27th. There was a great deal of discussion about the new Anah Shriners building. People are very happy with it. Over the next few months they are going to be doing some work on it and preparing it for use which will begin in the fall. Scott Hoyle reported on the recent repairs done on the calliope which is also very good news. Dysart’s was very good to waive the room and allow us to eat off the menu. Instead of its bringing sad melancholy prospects of decay, it would give us hopes of eternal youth in a better world.”- Maurice Chevalier July 2015 9 Continued from page 6 look forward to our next meeting there again on the last Wed. of October at 6:30, and we would certainly recommend Dysart’s on Broadway as a great location for any group needing a party room for their event. Donnie Copeland says that Gin’s humorous thought for the day is, “Sometimes when your mind says you can do it, you’re body says ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ “ :-) Well, that’s about it for this month folks. Hope you’re all enjoying your summer so far. Have a great July, and remember, never hesitate to contact me at 989-2617 or at [email protected] with any questions, concerns, news, jokes, gossip, nonsense, or just plain outright lies that you would like to generously share with our Nobles, Ladies, and Anah Shrinedom in general. J The last meeting was held at Pat’s Pizza in Ellsworth. President Roger Grindle called the meeting to order at 6:30. Old and new business was discussed. The club took in four new members, and 50 members were present. One date to remember will be joint meeting with Washington County November 3rd at the Franklin Veterans Club. We have become aware that some members are confusing the Calling Post with telemarketer calls. The Calling Post was set up to let all members know of upcoming event dates and monthly meetings, and it is working out well. Remember, the club is in adjournment for the next two months but we’ll try to keep up with the local news. The next meeting will be at Pat’s Pizza in Ellsworth September 1st. Brian Lane won the raffle for the evening. Also, Chuckles was on good behavior. The meeting adjourned at 7:00. Now for the local news. Past Potentate John Fernald and Lady Betty were seen at Angler’s Restaurant in Searsport. Wonder what they were fishing for? Haven’t heard anything new about Past Potentate and Lady Carole (with an e). Noble Tom Fernald’s new boat has arrived and I heard it has two 300HP outboards on it. Both of our Divan Reps, Don Gordon and Tim Dutch, were with us for the meeting, nice to have them there. We could not do the Special Olympics this year. We could not get enough members to participate due to conflict of scheduling of the Grand Lodge and Scottish Rites. We are hoping to have a yard sale Saturday, July 25, at the Shrine Center, contact Ryan Collins for information and donations. We have a projected date of August 16, a Sunday, for our luncheon in Millinocket around 1 o’clock. Hope to a lot of you then. The June meeting brought about a change to one of our member positions; Ryan Collins is now our Flag Master. We all thank Grayson for carrying this position for many years, a job well done. Thank you Grayson. Our meeting in July we will be reviewing our bylaws and procedures, much needed for all of us, and review our yard sale. Our next meeting is Tuesday, July 7, at the Shrine Center, 7 o’clock. Roger Frazier was not present to claim the 50/50, sorry Roger. Our July birthday’s are Nobles Galen Adams, and Dean Pennypacker; 67 years in the Shrine, way to go Dean. Happy Birthday to both of you. Anniversary best wishes going out to Noble Richard and Lady Kathy Goodness, Noble Harold and Lady Susan Adams. That does it for us until next month, stay safe. “Never be bullied into silence. Sundt, Reporter I recently shared this with a few fellow members and they felt I needed some more opinions? So here goes! I mean it really wasn’t my fault and I think you will have to agree with me. After all, I started it and was willing to see the task through but,,,,, she wanted to do it and so sent me outside to do ‘outside stuff’. Anyway it all began as I was headed that way, but as I passed by the cookstove I noticed that the ash pan was full. And yes, I could have left it for her to do. Being the kind of guy I am, I proceeded with the chore. I was interrupted 1/2 way through the job and she said all she needed from me was my shop vac that she would do it and for me to get out. So out I go to the garage and get the vac and place it on the porch beside the window where the cookstove sits. The extra long 2 piece hose I’ve fashioned has come apart so I proceeded to repair it in the garage. See, the idea is to leave the vac outside and run the hose, that’s the part that sucks (remember that part) in through the window. Along with the hose, the sucking part, you run the power cord in through the window as well. The beauty of the plan is, the machine stays outside! No noise, no dust! Beautiful. The best part is though (remember this) that the machine, being left outside, (you know dirt,,,dust,,,noise),gets left turned on and you can easily apply power on or off by plugging or unplugging the power cord right close by to where you are working at a convenient receptacle. No more running in and out, on and off. It’s all right there! So I sold her on the plan explaining all the steps she would save. I now finish repairing the hose, the sucking part, which she retrieves and I retire to the garden as directed. Now here is where it begins to get interesting. Everyone knows that in order for a shop vac to function properly, there goes on a whole lot of sucking and a whole lot of blowing in equal amounts. Right? At least one would think so. You know, the whole idea of the machine being outside and so on,,,, And also the idea to use the power cord, as explained earlier, to turn the machine on and off. A big labor saver. I’m in the garden, as directed, and I hear, over the whining of the vac, some loud language coming from the direction of the sunroom. As I turn to look, it’s as if the sunroom is on fire. She is exiting the door, smoke and ash is coming out all the open windows and chimney and the vac is howling. She seems to be struggling to kill the power. Remember the cord part? So picture this, I’m sure you’ve guessed it already, the supposed to be ‘sucking hose’ Continued on next page 662 Main Rd. In a panic to shut down the process, the critical cord part takes second place to the now critical switch. Being unfamiliar with the machine is an important part too, because in the time used to find the switch, the cookstove is now completely cleaned out. Cleanup of the sunroom took a little longer! Untill next time, SEE YA! Directors Staff Noble Dave Weaver - Reporter It’s hard to believe that the 4th of July is just around the corner and that the year 2015 is half over. But it is. May was a very busy month for ANAH, starting with the Circus followed closely by the Screening Clinics. From what I hear both were very successful. I worked the Friday shows at the circus, and as usual the afternoon show was lightly attended but the evening show more than made up for it. The mid-way attractions were a hit and well utilized by the kids and we got 40% of that income. The only negative comment I heard about that was the fact that all the acts were on one end and if you weren’t setting on that end it was a little difficult to see. The animals created this necessity and I think it was great to have the big cats back again. Next came the screening clinics on May 16, and I understand we had a total of 12 referrals. That is more than we have had in recent years. Two of the referrals came from my clinic in Western Washington County. I appreciate Donnie and Carolyn Wright for being my greeters again. This couple never refuses to help out. Tom King also came dressed in his Funster’s costume. Thank you, Tom. On behalf of ANAH I would like to personally thank all those who chaired and participated in this event to make it the success that it was. Noble Martin “Fou” Perfit, Clown Unit reporter May started off with The Bangor Shrine Circus which, despite the participation of most of the unit in all the shows, managed to turn way overflow crowds from the three thousand seat Cross Center. This success may have due to the participation of Shorty (Chris Fratello) the stilt walking clown visiting all the way from Anchorage, Alaska where he is Illustrious Potentate of Al Aska Shrine. The second weekend saw us up at Presque Isle for Shrine Circus in the even farther north than Bangor. Saturday, May 16 saw Dim-Wit (Scott Kennard) and Fou (Martin Perfit) at Fort Knox. (The Fort Knox in Maine, not the one in Kentucky) where the dauntless duo twisted balloons for the annual Families & Children Together Foster Care & Adoption Agency picnic. Another spring Saturday means another gig. This time it was on May 23 when Dumpster (Dennis Dyer) and Tin Cup (Tom Boone) made their way to Lincoln where they rubbed elbows and socialized with Senator Susan Collins. They even had a picture taken with her. This led them to conclude that Maine is fortunate in having Senator Collins representing us In Washington. The Springfield Shriners Hospital Clinic took place at Eastern Maine Medical Center on May 29. We started at 8:00 AM and kept going until mid-afternoon. The clowns present were Petals (Steve Watson), Spiffy (Kerry Spofford), Fou (Martin Perfit), Div-It (Duane Young), Papi (Stan Baker), Bo-Bo (Donald Young), and Scooter (Scott Boucher) making his return to clowning even as he is undergoing re-hab after having had significant surgery. The registration process for patients and their families was ably supported, backed-up, administered, managed, and maintained by two of our very able clown ladies: Pam Spofford & Janice Young. Janice also assisted families in filling out forms for travel reimbursement form Sunshine Club funds. This event truly speaks to the reason for our existence as Shriners: to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children, the staff, the children and families who benefit from the myriad services of our hospitals. July Birthdays: Spiffy (Kerry Spofford), Petals (Steve Watson), Patches (Shawn Mott). July Anniversaries: Papi & Alison Baker, Spiffy & Pam Spofford. Noble Mike Murphy Reporter Greetings Nobles and Ladies. Another month has come and gone. Your Highlanders performed for Husson University’s graduation in May. I was told to stay home as I was inflicted with a nasty virus that I dubbed Bent’s Plague. I suffered for about a month with it. Started with a tickle in the throat, then to a sore throat, then to sinus congestion and then to a sinus/chest infection to a loss of taste and smell, and finally what started in April ended about the 3rd week of May. YES, I’ve made a big deal about an annoying cold, while there are lots of people that have far worse illnesses. I do so, because an annoying cold to me is just that, annoying, but to someone with a compromised immune system (due to a serious medical condition) it could be life threatening. I urge all of my Brother Masons to consider others health before you shake someone else’s hand. You may think you have allergies, but you might be on the start of something like “Bent’s Plague” and infect a dear friend and cause them to become gravely ill. When in doubt, salute, give a thumbs up, fist bump, or bow like George Washington. Don’t put others in the awkward position of explaining that they have a weak immune system. I would argue that NOT shaking hands is the Masonic thing to do. Now that my rant on shaking hands is over, I can get back to band business. We plan to attend the Ceremonial in Ellsworth. We are scheduled to be in Bar Harbor on the 4th July. On the 7th of July we are going to confer a Master Mason degree at Mystic Lodge in Hampton. We have committed to being the “duty band” at the Maine Highland Games on August 15th. We’ll be performing a variety of piping tasks during the day. It is a lot of work, but it is also a lot of positive exposure for the Shrine. I’ve talked to a lot of people over the years, and sometimes I come in contact with someone with a very negative opinion of Masonry. I don’t think I’ve ever contacted anyone with a negative opinion of the Shrine, and it is because the Shrine does a better job of informing the general public about the Hospitals (it is why we do what we do). I explained to one person, after they cited a series of things about Masonry and what the Bible says about secret societies (or what they claimed the Bible said), I then informed them about all the good that the Shrine does. I went on to say that ALL Shriners are Masons, but not all Masons are Shriners. I then asked, “doesn’t the Bible say that you judge a tree by the fruit it produces? Can a bad tree produce good fruit?” At that point they really didn’t know what to say. They admitted they hadn’t thought of all the Masonic Charities. Masonry and the Shrine are some of the most selfless charities that I’ve ever seen. We do what we do, because we want to, not because a Judge told us that we had to. We enjoy our “work” and have a good time, because we want to help others,. We also have tangible results to encourage others in the Hospitals, the Learning Centers, Bikes for Books, and other projects. I’ve missed more time in the band this year than I think I missed in the previous 15 years combined. You’d think that I’d enjoy not having to drive 2+ hours every Sunday, but I miss what we do. A task that is missed is a worthy task. If you’d like to join us in having the most fun allowed by law, contact me at [email protected]. Until next time, be blessed, and have a blessed summer. We $200,000.00already have a great $100,000.00building committee working on getting it ready to go. Look for the announcement in this Anahgram for the upcoming open house. This committee has been given the task of setting a fund raising goal to pay for and improve the building as well as coming up with ideas of how to raise the money to meet that goal. We have decided on an initial goal of $1,000,000 over 5 yrs. I want to make it clear that we will have by-laws in place stating that any money given for the new building will be spent to reduce the loan or improve the building. None of this money will be spent on maintenance or operating expense. To some this may seem like a big number, but one thing I have learned about the folks in Anah is that when we work together we can accomplish anything. It’s going to take all of us helping to secure the future of Anah through this effort. You can always send a check as a donation to help, but some levels of giving have perks that you might enjoy, such as a reserved parking space just for you for three years or your name or a loved one’s name displayed permanently. Noble John Farrington, Reporter The membership of NPSC held their June meeting in Patten at the club house of the Rockabema Snow Rangers. After a great attitude adjustment time the Nobles feasted on a wonderful baked, stuffed chicken breast with all of the good things to go with it including fresh, hot biscuits. There were 30 in attendance for this supper. We had guaranteed 35 so this supper cost the club a little extra. President Elwell called the meeting to order at 7 o’clock and led the gathering in the Salute to Our Flag. Grace was immediately offered by Noble Perkins. At the conclusion of the meal the kitchen staff was given a fine round applause for their efforts of the evening. The minutes were presented by the secretary and the finances were reported by the treasurer. Each report was accepted singularly without any comments or questions. Raleigh Hanscom had the dubious distinction of paying the only fez fine for the evening. Ronald McComb won the 50/50 raffle which he graciously gave back to the club. An Entered Apprentice from Pine Tree Lodge #172, Steve Worchester was the guest of Noble Doug McCafferty for the evening’s meeting. Dignitaries present for the evening were DDGM Right Worshipful Byron Sanderson, Aide Emeritus; Paul Thornton, Chief Greater Emeritus; Durward Shedd and PP Tony Bowers. A card was circulated for Noble Herman Peabody wishing him back to better health. Noble Wallace Harvey let us know that Noble Chet Chase has remarried. Wallace circulated a card of congratulations for the newlyweds which all of us were more than happy to sign. PP Bowers spoke a bit about the new building on Outer Broadway in Bangor. He also mentioned the upcoming August 22, Super Supper of the Aroostook Shrine Club. Tickets are now available and there are some great cash prizes that go along with the purchase of the supper ticket. Check it out! That was the meeting at which we voted to purchase our new meeting place. The Past Masters Unit also held their first meeting in the new building that night. Not as many attended as we had hoped but we still had a successful meeting. The Funsters Unit also met that evening. They were still in session when we closed our meeting and left for home. Our leader, Noble Ken Swett talked again about plans for the future. On Sept 26 at the Shrine Temple we are planning on a 30th anniversary celebration of our Past Masters unit. More on this as time goes by. Please save that date, open to all, semi public. Any suggestions YOU may have will be most helpful. I wanted to update you all a little bit on membership. First of all let me tell you we had a very successful Hospital Support Night event on Sat. August 2nd. This is something the membership comm. put on to raise awareness of what we really do as Shriners which is support the hospitals. We had a fantastic meal put on by the Second Section, who did it free of charge by the way, a silent auction,3 patients from the hospitals that spoke and some great entertainment by the Skyliners band. Because it was our first time doing this and being in the middle of the summer I was a little nervous about what kind of turnout we would get. I am very pleased to say that we had over 120 in attendance! The deal was that every penny of profit we made would be split between the Boston and Springfield hospitals. We actually will be sending them $1062.00 each! I have spoken with Jesse Thomas our Chief Rabban and it looks like we will do this again next year hopefully on May 16th. In addition to that the membership comm. is meeting once a month and will be starting phone calls to all those nobles Springfield MA is now a thing of the past who are behind in dues next month. Enjoy the good weather while we have it. Hopefully we will have a nice warm fall. Our August 7th meeting was a ladies night and was held at the Degenhart Campground in Jonesport. I was unable to attend so have no report on the meeting. I do know that they were making the plans for the Annual Bob Smith Picnic on August 17th. Milne July 2015 23 MAY CALENDAR WINNERS! Noble Fred Patterson, Reporter Greetings Nobles and Ladies. It’s hard to believe this but we are ready to announce our sixth Annual Noble of the Year that will be held on October 3, 2015 at Anah temple. My assumption is that it will be at the new Broadway temple and not the Main Street facility. This year’s honoree has been chosen by the Unit and we are proud to announce that Noble Doug Sukeforth was, hands down, chosen as the 2015 Noble of the Year. Doug’s dedication to Anah goes above and beyond and anyone who knows Doug would be proud to call him a friend. Tickets are only $15.00 per person for an evening of dinner, silent auction and dancing to the live music of Retro Rockerz. This is sure to be a good time so keep your eyes out for tickets for the event. The June Ceremonial will be behind us when you read this Anahgram, so let me congratulate all of the new Nobles of Anah Shrine who were initiated in Ellsworth. Stay tuned for the August Anahgram for further information on that event. Second Section is still actively selling Gun Raffle tickets for a drawing every day in September 2015. Talk to any Second Section member for yours today or contact me at [email protected] and I’ll see to it that you get your ticket. The ticket price is only $20.00 each and we are only selling 1000 tickets. Each ticket that is drawn will be put back into the drawing so everyone who purchases a ticket gets 30 chances of winning. If there are any Nobles out there that may have tickets that they don’t think they can sell, contact me to get them back and we’ll see if we can get them into the hands of someone else who may be looking for some to sell. Keep in mind that as of this publication, we only have two more months to sell the balance of the tickets that we have. Noble Tom Beitweg will be contacting Nobles for help with parking during the Waterfront Concerts in Bangor this summer. To date we have done three shows and it has been very well received. We are using the ERA Dawson parking lot again this year and we should be able to fill it at all events. Take a look at their web site to see when you may be able to help as this is a real good fundraiser for the Unit. I hope everyone had a good time. I wanted to say thanks to the Chanters who were able to march in the Special Olympics parade in Orono this year. It may be the shortest parade that we participate in but it is by far the most rewarding. Nowhere will you ever march for a more enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. I highly recommend it to all units. Now we can look forward to moving in to our new temple. It looks like it will be a great facility for us. Have a good Summer Widow’s Club Lorena Fenlason, Reporter Hi Ladies, This is the first article of the Widow’s Club. Many of you have received a letter from me back in May. I know there are many of you that I didn’t have names and addresses. I would love to hear from you , so just call me or email me . My number is 989-3664 or 745-8819, my email is [email protected]. I would like to get this club going so we can as a group enjoy some of those shrine activities. Not only would we still be a part of what our husbands dedicated time to, but we would also still help with the support of the hospitals. A few times a year we could just get together to spent social time to get to know each other. Peggy Kaufman is in charge of the widows pins. If you have not received one and would like one , just get in touch with her. Her number is, 924-6610. Her email is [email protected]. I’m sure she would love to hear from you. Until we can meet. It is without a doubt when I say this will be even better than last year’s Feztival. Hear Ye Hear Ye we will have plenty of parking. I bet you never thought you’d hear that! We do have our work cut out for us over the next several month but rest assured you’ll be pleased with the outcome. We will be displaying more trees than before but we are not totally set on a number quite yet. We want to present things in a tasteful but awe inspiring way. This event has only one way to go and that is continuing to get better year by year. I want to thank all those involved with securing the new facility and giving Anah a breath of fresh air. We are entering into a new era and the Feztival of trees hopes to be the premier event to bring this to fruition. We are trying to take small steps this year in order to keep a class act so all of Anah’s family will be proud of what we are doing. This is your home and your fraternity please keep it the best it can be by helping whenever you can. And by you I mean each shriner and each lady. We men would be behind the eight ball if it were not for our BETTER half. See ya next month. Sorry for missing last month’s article.
