AACR Conference Attendance
Debbie's Dream attended the AACR Annual Meeting 2015 in
Philadelphia which highlighted the latest, most exciting
discoveries in every area of cancer research and provided a
unique opportunity for investigators from all over the world to
meet, interact, and share their insights. This year's meeting
theme - "Bringing Cancer Discoveries to Patients" - underscored
the vital and inextricable link between discovery and treatment,
and it reinforced the fact that research underpins all the progress
we are making in the field toward cancer cures.
Debbie's Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer offered
$100,000 in research grants comprised of two $50,000 Young
Fellowship awards. Debbie's Dream works with the AACR on our
grants in order to uphold the high standards of review and to
assure the most advanced science. Our two $50,000 grants were
awarded this year to (1) Eirini Pectasides, MD, PhD from DanaFarber Cancer Institute to study "Enhancing the efficacy of ERBB2 inhibition in gastric
cancer" and to (2) Andrea Zamperone, PhD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of
Yeshiva University to study the "Mechanisms of DNA damage signaling by Helicobacter
pylori." Both Dr. Pectasides and Dr. Zamperone are pictured with DDF Board Member Libia
Scheller.

Boston Marathon - Running for the DREAM
Skip Kimpel and Lindsay Dahlben (both pictured to the right) made their
way to Boston for the 2015 Boston Marathon to run for the DREAM on
April 20, 2015. Although their stories are different, their missions for
loved ones are the same. Skip ran in memory of Dr. Melissa De WittLarson, a former Dream Team, Symposium Committee, and Patient
Resource Education Program (PREP) member. Melissa was diagnosed
with Stage IV stomach cancer in August of 2010 and passed away on October 15, 2012 at the age of
42. Lindsay ran in honor of her sister Rachael Masri who was diagnosed with Stage IV stomach
cancer in 2013 and underwent a full gastrectomy. Rachael is currently living in Israel with her husband
and three small children. Skip and Lindsay's passion and dedication to raising awareness about
stomach cancer and to keeping the DREAM alive is inspirational, and we are so proud of their
accomplishments!

3rd Annual Advocacy Day
On March 4, 2015 Debbie's Dream advocates traveled from all over
the country and battled snow storm conditions to "storm" Capitol Hill to
advocate that Congress devote more federal resources to gastric
cancer research and to again include stomach cancer as one of the
cancers under the $50 million Department of Defense (DoD) Peer
Review Cancer Research Program (PRCRP.) Per cancer death,
stomach cancer receives the least amount of federal funding of any
cancer. Advocates fought hard for the inclusion of stomach cancer
with their compelling stories and data that stomach cancer is
connected to the service of our country's men and women in uniform. Inclusion of stomach cancer in
the PRCRP is a significant milestone that DDF accomplished through its advocacy efforts in 2014. If
you were not able to travel to DC due to the weather conditions, or any other reason, you can still get
involved. We need you to be the voice of those who are no longer with us. Our 2016 Advocacy Day is
already in its planning stages, so CLICK HERE to get involved in our advocacy efforts.
