Situation
A healthy root system is essential to having healthy
turfgrass – no roots, no turf. Hermen Van Dunk experienced
this firsthand when he became superintendent at Leewood
Golf Club in Eastchester, N.Y.
“When I took over as superintendent, we had 19 dead
greens on the golf course,” Van Dunk said. “Basically,
everything was dead, and I had to bring it back to life.
The subsurface was so bad I didn’t know where to begin.”
Van Dunk tried multiple products, including a product that
claimed plant health benefits. All of them ended up injuring
the grass further. His distributor suggested using Honor®
Intrinsic™ brand fungicide. Van Dunk had used other
BASF products with success but still was initially skeptical.
However, after seeing the effects from the first application
of Honor Intrinsic brand fungicide, Van Dunk made the
fungicide a standard part of his spray program.
Hermen Van Dunk is Rooted in Resilience.
Solution
“I was floored by the results. I sprayed Honor Intrinsic
[brand fungicide], and then we had a two-week stretch
of 72 to 75 degree nights with a couple of thunderstorms,”
Van Dunk said. “When I checked to see if we needed
a contact fungicide, we were clean on fairways and
approaches.”
“I use Honor Intrinsic [brand fungicide] at a rate of 24 fl.
oz. per acre a week before and a week after aerification,”
Van Dunk said. “Then, once the summertime comes, I spray
Honor Intrinsic [brand fungicide] at a rate of 48 fl. oz. per
acre on my greens, approaches and tees once a month.
At the end of July and into August, I’ll go back and spray
my fairways.”

Honor Intrinsic brand fungicide is a combination
of pyraclostrobin, the active ingredient in Insignia®
fungicide, and boscalid, the active ingredient in Emerald®
fungicide. This pre-mix provides two modes of action and
delivers unsurpassed control of the top diseases as well
as plant health benefits. BASF research shows turf treated
with Honor Intrinsic brand fungicide provides improved
plant health in the form of stress management—including
both drought pressure and extreme moisture—and
increased root length and density.
“It functions under the roots,” Van Dunk said. “It’s actually
being absorbed into the plant, making the plant stronger
and not just affecting growth.”
Success
“The increased root growth we’ve experienced is surreal,”
Van Dunk said. “Over the past two years, I’ve seen visual
evidence of Honor Intrinsic [brand fungicide] working.
It’s created a hardier plant and root structure.”
In addition to disease control and increased root growth,
Van Dunk has seen increased density on fairways as well
as labor savings.
“With Honor Intrinsic [brand fungicide], I’ve seen a
reduction in the demand for water on the greens and
approaches, and in turn this is saving us in labor costs,”
Van Dunk said. “If we aren’t spending hours of labor
watering the greens, then we’re saving.”
Van Dunk plans to keep Honor Intrinsic brand fungicide
as a part of his rotation at Leewood Golf Club.
“To go from no roots to the roots we have now is
incredible,” Van Dunk said. “Honor Intrinsic [brand
fungicide] is treating us very well.”
