“IMPORTANCE OF EVENT ANALYSIS IN HOMOEOPATHIC PRESCRIBING” A ONE DAY SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR BY HMAI, CHANDRAPUR 4TH OCTOBER 2015 SPEAKERS: DRS. MANOJ PATEL & SACHIN JUNAGADE DR. M. L. DHAWALE MEMORIAL HOMOEOPATHIC INSTITUTE 4th October 2015 was a bright day in the history of Homoeopathy in Chandrapur. The Homoeopathic Medical Association India (HMAI), Chandrapur unit, organized a scientific seminar for practitioners & students practicing Homoeopathy in the interior tribal region of Chandrapur. Around 150 doctors attended & benefited. It was a rare phenomenon where two well-known Homoeopaths - Dr. Kasim Chimthanwala, a senior one from Nagpur, who spent his entire life in teaching & spreading Homoeopathy, a brilliant & charismatic teacher and an orator par-excellence and Dr. Manoj Patel, a well known, dynamic & mesmerizing speaker, master in case taking, having excellence in perceiving mind & emotions and great sensitivity to connect with patients & audience were on the same dais. This was a combination where the senior was an inspiring force & the junior was the motivating force. Both together had the capacity to increase the yearning to become like them & study Homoeopathy, the scientific way. Felicitation of a great Homoeopath HMAI Chandrapur honoured & felicitated Dr. Kasim Chimthanwala sir for his achievements & service to the field of Homoeopathy. We in Vidarbha have grown up attending his lectures, reading his books, articles & attended his school. At this age also he is taking pains to teach & make real followers of Homoeopathy. Dr. Kasim Chimthanwala’s passion, love, devotion & dedication towards learning, teaching & spreading Homoeopathy were seen in his talk. He is an Allopathic graduate but has taken pains to learn & understand Homoeopathic science because cure is possible only through Homoeopathy. He said that other ‘pathy’ doctors are making patients for us and we are strong enough to cure them with Homoeopathy. He recognized the limitations of colleges in the making of Homoeopathic practitioners and the role of clinicians in this valuable task. He enjoined the young to follow the instructions of the seniors faithfully, take efforts and not to hesitate to take their patient to senior practitioners. This will be a process of learning. He was disappointed & disapproved the demand of some politicians & students to practice Allopathy. If one does not know the science, one cannot earn one’s bread & butter with it was his intention. He said no one has the power to end Homoeopathy; it is self existing as it follows Nature’s law of cure. Dr. Kasim Chimthanwala was felicitated by our beloved Dr. B. H. Dabhere, the senior most Homoeopath, who introduced Homoeopathy in Chandrapur in the true sense 55 years ago. Dr. Dabhere elucidated the difficulties he encountered at that time. Now minds of people have changed and they have started accepting & demanding Homoeopathy. Our young generation is not taking to it in larger numbers which is very painful. Taking such seminar at small places like 1 Chandrapur is the need of the day to guide young Homoeopaths. He appreciated HMAI Unit Chandrapur for organizing this seminar. The Beginning: Touching Hearts Dr. Kasim Chimthanwala was the chair person of this session. Dr. Manoj Patel was the chief speaker and his first line of talk won the hearts of the audience. Sir said he was blessed by his morning’s visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s Sevagram Ashram and Baba Aamte’s Anandwan. What was the similarity between these two people’s lives and that of Dr. Hahnemann’s? They all spent their lives in the pursuit of “TRUTH”. Dr. Hahnemann wrote 6 editions of Organon of Medicine, and made changes as he discovered the truth. Dr. Hahnemann was honest and he accepted his failures. He was not afraid of making changes as he discovered the truth. “Dare to be wise”. He complimented Dr. Chimthanwalla’s exhortation of wanting to learn from failures by accepting them. Do not hesitate and be afraid of facing the Truth. Truth it is like the bright sun. If you have failed in a case accept it; if you gave a medicine in doubt of whether it will act or not and if your patient got better, search for the reason why he got cured? What was there which cured him? If the patient is not getting better, find out the reason. Homoeopathy is nothing but truth, “Natures Law of Cure”. “ GALAT HAI TO GALAT HAI, SACH KO SWIKARO, GALAT KARNA BAND KARO APNE AAP SAHI HONA SHURU HOGA AUR TUM SACCHAI KE RASTE PER BADHTE JAOGE” Stop doing wrong and you will be on the path of Truth was his very simple suggestion and it has got a tremendous power of changing ourselves. When I have started rectifying my mistakes & errors in prescribing, I will be prescribing the similimum. I will be free of my prejudices. This simple explanation connected Dr. Manoj Patel with the group. At the outset, Dr. Manoj shared his mother’s case of Malaria. A very powerful experience of what Homoeopathy can do in hopeless cases was experienced by this case and if we are alert enough and if we observed such things happening before our eyes, we can learn Homoeopathy. His mother got cured & his interest built up in learning Homoeopathy. Dr. Manoj Patel talked about precision and ease in selecting remedies and likened the process to the actions of a good surgeon who gives an incision on a most prominent part leaving a hardly visible scar. We have to look for such areas in the life of person where we can give an incision & the pus (suppression, emotional turmoil, disturbances) comes out. Asking the patient to write a history is necessary as it gives us an idea about a patient’s problems prior to the interview. This was a new concept for homoeopaths and, perhaps, people of Chandrapur. The information provided helps the physician to choose the area where to give incision to open up the case thus helping us to understand patient as a person. A small exercise of how to take a case was also demonstrated on the group by asking them questions like why?? What happened??, etc. T-F-C-A-R (Thought-Feeling-Commitment-Action-Result) model proved to be a little difficult for the group to understand due to technical breakdown of the projector. And yet, Dr. Manoj explained the concept beautifully through a case history and expressions of the patient. How thinking about something generates feelings, that feeling generate desires, desires not getting fulfilled leads to dissatisfaction & then anger emerges as seen in behavior and thus disease begins. We have to operate at the T-F-C-A-R level; we have to understand what is wrong with 2 that patient. If we are able to correct this, we can cure any pathology, may it be cancer or anything else. The importance of the observer was explained. Observer helps us to free ourselves from prejudices, to reason out our actions and to complete the totality if the physician has missed out anything. Observation: the Foundation for Case taking Sir shared his experience of managing a patient of coma in a tribal village where no resource or medical facility was at hand in this life and death situation. How to observe & what to observe in a critical situation to arrive at a totality if the patient is not talking was well demonstrated. The group was active and interactive in spotting the uncommon, peculiar symptoms in this case. It learnt which rubrics should be taken. Aphorism 3 (Knowledge of the Physician) & aphorism 5 ((Fundamental & Exciting cause) were demonstrated. This makes understanding of Organon easy, applicable and very practical. Homoeopathic principles are not just theory was proved by Manoj Patel and feedbacks given by Dr. Chimthanwala were helpful in practice. Dr. Manoj cured this coma case many years ago but the experience was so powerful that we saw him horripilate; such is his remarkable sensitivity. This helps him to connect with patients and they disclose the secrets of their lives. This is an art which all of us should experience. Homoeopathic case taking in not just asking questions and noting the chronological sequence of disease. We have to go deeper to explore the patient as a person and thus find the individuality. Dr. Kasim Chimthanwala’s applications of Aphorisms in Dr. Manoj Patel’s cases were wonderful; it was like “Jugalbandi” between two successful Homoeopaths. Dr. Kasim sir’s explanation of Miasms too was amazing. Case well taken is case Cured Post lunch session demonstrated a case of fibromyalgia which was an eye opener with a host of observations. Nothing was helping the patient. All investigations found nothing wrong. She had come from the UK for treatment. The case taking on its own cured the patient! Group learnt that a well taken case itself is fully cured. It was as if the “Jadugar” has done his “Magic trick”. Is the dynamic power of the physician any different from the small, dynamic, sweet Homoeopathic medicines? If we are able to strike the deepest chord in a patient, are the sympathetic vibrations released able to cure? The dynamic power in human being helping in curing human suffering was experienced. Group was stunned at witnessing this powerful experience live through the audio visual presentation. This case gave insight to the group about what proper case taking can bring about. If we can help to resolve the internal conflicts of patient we will win the battle. All sincere and alert participants will definitely change themselves after this presentation. Issues within the life of the patient were discussed with group actively sharing their views on the matters which were important to understand the case e.g. Valentine day, the problems between patient & her husband, the cause of illness through considering the issues in the life of this patient. Reaching a proper remedy - Cimicifuga through Boger’s approach was seen. Riding in the jaws of death: Managing Pneumonia 3 Then the co-speaker, Dr. Sachin Junagade, from M. L. Dhawale Institute Palghar, presented a case of Pneumonia. A simple looking case but a little carelessness can cause death of the child. Healthy discussion with the group about accepting a case, importance of investigations & then reaching a proper diagnosis, the do’s & don’t in case was the rich repast. Video of case was very interesting and it boosted the confidence of the group especially the youngsters. Even in acute emergency, Homoeopathy works in a gentle but rapid way without complications. Leaning from the case was how to form acute totality, use of BBCR, and the Fever chapter. Importance of diagnosing a case and taking quick actions in emergency helps to save lives. Sharing of patient’s mother that Homoeopathy works faster boosts our confidence. Community’s belief that Homoeopathy is slow acting will change by this amazing experience. Dr. Sachin Junagade is an ex student from Chandrapur Homoeopathic College. Freshers were impressed & motivated to learn like him. He became the role model for students. Short but a very sweet case, indeed. Bringing back ‘Lost’ cases Then Dr. Manoj Patel showed small clippings of cases of the Psychiatry Department. A case of a boy with convulsions, before & after showed a remarkable transformation. What to observe, how to proceed towards totality, the use of repertorial approach & selection of rubrics were explained. Posology was discussed & anti-convulsant medicines were reduced as our medicine started working. A small dose of the simillimum helped in bringing about a tremendous improvement in the patient. No episode of convulsions & he was off Allopathic Rx. Broad smile on the face of child after treatment was witnessed by the group. The whole attitude of the patient was changed by the correct Homoeopathic medicine. He spoke freely, expressed himself and said “ CHAAN POWDER LAVUN AALO MANHUN SUNDAR DISAT AAHE” (I applied talcum powder on my face and hence I am looking well) & the patient started laughing, humour developed and irritability disappeared. This is the power of Homoeopathic medicines to change the life of patients. Then case in Psychiatric ward of Asha, generated feelings of disgust, fear, pity. No one liked to help her; we all rejected as we saw her. Everyone was sure that there was no role for Homoeopathy here. But to perceive deep into the mind or inner self of patient’s emotion was shown by the powerful sharing about why this lady became mad. Deceived by husband, blamed by society that she was careless about her child, she left the child alone & went out to bring medicine and her child died. This blame that she is insensitive, careless, killer, “KAISI MAA HAI, BACCHE KO MAAR DALA” (what sort of a mother is she-she killed her own child!) broke her emotionally. Her husband was not there to support. Seeing such types of insane in asylums, inhuman behaviour of doctors and cruel types of treatment meted out to them made Dr. Hahnemann restless & his sensitive mind searched for truth. He found that affection, love, care can treat such patient in a GENTLE way rather than torturing, beating & tying them with chains in wards. What to do in such case with Homoeopathy was explained by Dr. Hahnemann in aphorisms 210 to 230. This patient was admitted in ward and students observed that patient day and night and tell their observations to Dr. Manoj Patel. The remedy was selected and given. But patient did not improve. Then one day the patient’s mother was interviewed and all areas of the patient’s life were explored. She gave history that whenever the patient was in a stressful situation, she had severe constipation and sheep dung like stools which had to be removed with fingers. The remedy then clicked and considering entire data, Mag Mur was selected & given and 4 the patient was cured completely. This miraculous result delivered a pleasant surprise and eyes remained wide open by seeing the drastic change in the patient. This is the beauty of Homoeopathy and the lady started improving, she started returning from animal into human in a GENTLE way. Life of that lady changed and I am sure that after this presentation lives of many more Homoeopaths and students will change and their journey toward search of TRUTH begin. Homoeopathy helps in the higher purpose of existence was witnessed. This made us think, where we are, what are we doing, whether we are loyal to the teachings of Dr. Hahnemann? Are our teachers not able to transfer Hahnemann’s restlessness, his principles, his values, his burning desire for the search of TRUTH to cure in a rapid, gentle & permanent way? Are we deviating from “Similia Similibus Curentur” and are practising other than Homoeopathy? Dr. Manoj Patel’s session enlightened us to learn Scientific Homoeopathy, search for Truth, remain honest with ourselves & mankind, to become Good Human Beings & ready to help anyone in need which takes us towards Excellence. This is the real “MISSION” of Physician which Dr. Hahnemann expected us to do. In retrospect I am thankful to all HMAI members for trusting me. I am the youngest among you all who are 50+ but still you believed in me & stood behind me for organizing this seminar. When we decided to take it, we faced many opinions, oppositions and disapprovals. We started with the question whether we would be able to organize it at all! A widespread disinterest in learning was perceived and hence there was a talk of involving college students. Then we decided it should be addressed to practitioners. This was the 1st Homoeopathic Seminar at Chandrapur where delegates from the interior got opportunity to attend as we went to every Doctor with a request them to attend. The sentiment was that since this was to be the first seminar, we should call a local speaker as we would not be able to manage a famous one. Dr. Koyadwar, President HMAI Unit Chandrapur asked me to organize the best seminar and to call the best speaker. His confidence inspired me & gave strength to work hard. Then we redefined our purpose of taking this seminar. We usually experience that speaker shows miraculous results, difficult & rare cases and we praise him and forget. We are not able to transfer this learning into our practice. Hence we wanted students & practitioners should pass through the process of Case taking, Analysis, Repertorization & coming up to the Similimum with active participation & not just be carried away with the results. Everybody should understand the efforts & hard work behind the results. When I was a student, I attended one workshop taken by HMAI Unit Chandrapur in association with P. B. Homoeopathic Medical College on Dr. Hahnemann Birth Anniversary in 2002 at Chandrapur. Late Dr. Vasant Hazare arranged that workshop. Dr. Kumar Dhawale, Dr. Anoop Nigwekar & Dr. Manoj Patel presented their cases and that was the 1st audio visual presentation at Chandrapur. This workshop changed our lives; they took us to a different world of Homoeopathy. This workshop motivated & influenced many students to learn evidence based Homoeopathy. It created interest in me and my seniors; we wanted to learn similar type of Homoeopathy so we took admission in Dr. M. L. Dhawale Memorial Institute for M.D (Hom). We got to learn practical Homoeopathy there. Keeping this in mind, I decided to request Dr. Kumar Dhawale sir to send Dr. Manoj Patel to 5 take an inspiring seminar so that many more students get motivation to learn scientific Homeopathy and they can shape their lives as we were benefited. I have taken a small initiative to make students & Homoeopaths understand the power of Homoeopathy if we follow principles. This seminar will help Chandrapur Homoeopaths & students to come out of their inhibitions & hesitations and start studying, learning & experimenting in Homoeopathy. Thank you Dr. Kasim Chimthanawala sir & Dr. Manoj Patel. You gave us strongest Antimiasmatic dose because of which future generations of Chandrapur will practice only & only Homoeopathy. We can’t make institutions like Dr. M. L. Dhawale everywhere but the students of Dr. M. L. Dhawale definitely should organize seminars as we organized one in Chandrapur. We can ignite young souls to travel on the path of Dr. Hahnemann. No external force can bring change in Homoeopathy unless we Homoeopath change ourselves”. Thanks to Dr. Koyadwar, Dr. B. H. Dabhere, Dr. S U. Zodey, Dr. Madyaswar, Dr. Bawane, Dr. Ashok Akhare, Dr. Kurekar, Dr. Shastrakar, Dr. Raju Akhare, Dr. Sammanwar, Dr. Katlawar & Dr. Wadekar for your help & support. Dr. Manoj Patel started his session by sharing how he came to Homoeopathy. His travel from an 8th std. student to a famous Homoeopath motivated students to read, to know, to go deep in Homoeopathic science. It was a good interactive session with students. They were very happy & enjoyed every bit of the session. The Art of Receiving a case was demonstrated through the coma case which needed Opium. Every relevant Homoeopathic principle was explained through this case. It started from doubt whether to take a case or not, and dealt with the concept of observer and skills of observation in a comatose patient. Tremendous power of the Homoeopathic pills was seen in a cost effective manner. Dr. Sachin Junagade’s case was very basic in day to day practice: a malaria case. All aspects from ODP, analysis of symptoms, reaching diagnosis, plan of investigation, plan of action was well demonstrated through active interaction. Student started opening up, shared and asked many questions. Dr. Sachin Junagade becomes the role model for students as he was from the same college & doing great work. He was an inspiration for them. Dr. Manoj Patel shared his failure in practice; he said failure is the ladder toward success. Find out the reasons behind failure and try to overcome it. You will be on the path to success. Always be positive and optimistic. His videos were eye opener to students. It made them realize that we should also get exposed to such type of scientific learning. Seeing results before & after in all hopeless cases boosted them to study hard and become good Homoeopaths. Students witnessed the teachers of Dr. M. L. Dhawale Homoeopathic Institute showing miraculous results through following Homoeopathic principles. Their command on Philosophy, Materia Medica, Repertory & Clinical subjects was visible through their presentations. I feel many students who took admission for practicing Allopathy will convert to Homoeopathy through today’s session. This session will help our college students shape their lives and they will thirst for knowledge. I am very thankful to Principal Dr. S. Y. Sakharkar & Dr. Suchita Vaidya for giving us permission for taking a short session for students. The idea behind this session was give the students an exposure to scientific Homoeopathy so that the depth of Homoeopathic science would be better understood. Dr. Ashishkumar S. Julme M. D.
