RESEARCH METHODOLOGY,
BIOSTATISTICS AND HISTORY OF MEDICINE – MD PART -1
INTRODUCTION:
In the study of any branch of science, an acquaintance with the historical
development of knowledge is an important element to clear understanding of
our present conception s. it is because the past supplies the key to the concepts
involved in the homoeopathic art of healing in the in the light of the
evolutionary growth of general, philosophical and medical concepts. In this
regard the study of history of medicine-evolution with special emphasis on
Hahnemann’s contribution to medicine in general and homoeopathy in
particular is very apt.
Objectives:
1) To explain the nature and scope of statistics and application of statistical
methods to medicine in general and homoeopathy in particular.
2) To explain methods of collection, classification, tabulation, analysis and
presentation of data.
3) To explain measures of central tendency, measures of variation, skew
ness /kurtosis of a distribution and correlation regression analysis.
4) To understand the utility of sampling theory, probability theory,
theoretical destruction in conducting research.
5) To understand and apply various tests of significance to different areas to
medical science for the purpose of making estimation and inferences
based on available data.
6) To explain what research is and what it is not, the criteria for research and
the different types of research.
7) To present some aspects of the debate about the nature of knowledge and
the value of scientific method.
8) To discuss what a researchable problem is and to describe how research
problem is found and stated.
9) To clarify the objectives of research and to explain the process of
research.
10)
To explain how to plan and conduct a research project.
11)
To describe the range of research methods available to the
researcher for collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
12)
To explain how to write and present research findings and
recommendations.

anatomy, surgery and internal medicine, medieval hospitals and hygiene.
5. The rebirth of science: the anatomical awakenings, concepts of diseases, the
rise of internal medicine, the revival of physiology, microscopically
examination of the animal body.
6. The period of consolidation: the reign of law. The rise of clinical teaching.
Anatomy and the Edinburgh school, physiology, morbid anatomy becomes a
science, surgery and obstetrics. The beginning of the science of vital statistics.
The industrial revolution, communicable disease and hygiene control and
recognition of epidemic disease.
7. The period of scientific subdivision: origin and implications of scientific
specialization. The revolution in preventive medicine, Johannes Muller, the
work of Claude Bernard. The work of Karl Ludwig. Later physiological
investigators : respiration, circulation, the blood biochemistry. The cell theory,
establishment of doctrine of germ origin of disease. Anesthesia. The revolution
in surgery bacteriology becomes a science, the study of immunity.

In this
regard the study of history of medicine-evolution with special emphasis on

anatomy, surgery and internal medicine, medieval hospitals and hygiene.
The industrial revolution, communicable disease and hygiene control and
recognition of epidemic disease.

specialization.

Objectives:
25)
To explain the nature and scope of statistics and application of
statistical methods to medicine in general and homoeopathy in particular.
26)
To explain methods of collection, classification, tabulation,
analysis and presentation of data.
27)
To explain measures of central tendency, measures of variation,
skew ness /kurtosis of a distribution and correlation regression analysis.
28)
To understand the utility of sampling theory, probability theory,
theoretical destruction in conducting research.
29)
To understand and apply various tests of significance to different
areas to medical science for the purpose of making estimation and
inferences based on available data.
30)
To explain what research is and what it is not, the criteria for
research and the different types of research.
31)
To present some aspects of the debate about the nature of
knowledge and the value of scientific method.
32)
To discuss what a researchable problem is and to describe how
research problem is found and stated.
33)
To clarify the objectives of research and to explain the process of
research.
34)
To explain how to plan and conduct a research project.
35)
To describe the range of research methods available to the
researcher for collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
36)
To explain how to write and present research findings and
recommendations.

C. History of medicine:
1. The dawn of medicine: medicine in prehistoric times, ancient Egypt and
Mesopotamia origin of Greek medicine, Hippocratic practice, Aristotle.
2. The heirs of Greece: the Alexandrian school, medical teaching in the roman
empire.galen, the final medical synthesis’s of antiquity.
3. The middle ages: byzantine medicine, the period of depression in Europe.
4. Arabic medicine: the medieval awaking of the universities, medieval
anatomy, surgery and internal medicine, medieval hospitals and hygiene.
8. The changed view of insanity: the development of modern pathology. the
rise of pediatrics.
9. The history of pharmacopoeias: content of modern pharmacopoeias: active
principles, alkaloids and glycosides, pharmacology the scientific investigations
of drug action.
10) Evolution of medicine: special emphasis on Hahnemann’s contribution to
medicine.
