The mission of the YWCA is “the empowerment of women and girls and the elimination of racism.”
Encore Plus, a program that provides breast health education and access to screening to underserved
women of color through the YWCA of White Plains & Central Westchester, “is YWCA’s mission in
action,” says Program Director Jackie Ramos-Calderon.
Encore Plus began as a grassroots-structured effort across the country in 1992, but did not come to
Westchester until 1996. When it lost its original funding source at the end of 2000, Komen Greater
NYC funding kept the program alive. The program primarily targets low-income African-American
and Latina women in Westchester County. “We focus on the undocumented, the uninsured and
the forsaken. We don’t wait for them to come to us; we go to them,” says Ramos-Calderon, who
joined Encore Plus a year after its launch.
“There is no need to reinvent the wheel. It’s just about knowing the community and where they will
go for help,” says Ramos-Calderon. “The place where people go for help is the church.” Many
undocumented immigrants seek social services from churches knowing that they will not be reported
to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Ramos-Calderon often works with existing church
groups to offer breast health educational sessions and mammogram referrals.
Ramos-Calderon’s passion for disseminating breast cancer information and providing access to
screening has gained her, and the Encore Plus program, more than a healthy reputation in
Westchester County, as her packed schedule of outreach events demonstrates. Ramos-Calderon’s
philosophy on her work gets right to the heart of the Encore Plus program: “I always share
information with everybody. You never know who will need these services.”
By Julia Connors

The fulfillment of Komen Greater NYC’s mission depends on donations from
generous corporations, foundations and individuals like you. Although we were able
to award $1.7 million in grants to local community organizations this year, in fact,
we received more than $4.5 million in grant requests. Through our newly launched
Donor Recognition Program, not only do we extend our gratitude to you for your
generosity and vision, but we would also like to acknowledge you as a role model.
The Donor Recognition Program acknowledges those who make annual donations
in the amount of $500 or more to the general fund, as well as the Race for the
Cure®. The first listing will appear in the Spring 2006 Komen Connection
newsletter. Donors who participate in the launch year (2005) of the Recognition
Program will be considered Charter Donors and will be recognized as such as
they renew their gifts annually. Requests for anonymity will be respected.

generous sponsorship of the event.
2005 AWARDS LUNCHEON
On May 3, 2005, at its annual Awards Luncheon, the Greater New York
City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation awarded
nearly $1.7 million in grants to breast health community organizations in
the local area (see list of grants at left).
Jo’Ann M. Selkirk Survivor Award
In honor of former Komen Greater NYC Board President, we are honoring
a breast cancer survivor who has gone to extraordinary measures to
support others with the disease. This award captures the commitment
and passion Jo’Ann showed in her amazing work and its recipient will be
selected by a committee that includes Jo’Ann’s family. The award will be
presented at the 2005 Komen New York City Race for the Cure® on
September 25th.

Teens Host “Tickled Pink®” Fashion
Show and Shopping Event
This past April at the Diane von Furstenberg Studio in Manhattan, Teens for the
Cure®, an ambitious group of 15 young women (ages 16-17) launched their first
fundraiser, Tickled Pink®. Tickled Pink® was conceived by Komen Greater NYC
Board Member Iris Dankner and her daughter Niki as an opportunity to bring
local teens together, using their collective talents to fight the battle against
breast cancer. The event, which included a fashion show, raffles and a silent
auction, raised nearly $60,000!

DONOR RECOGNITION
PROGRAM LAUNCHED
2005 KOMEN STEP GRANTEES
Another meaningful award that will be new this year is the 2005 DSW CoSurvivor Award, recognizing someone who is not necessarily a breast
cancer survivor but who has helped a survivor get through his or her
experience by providing support, encouragement and friendship through
the cancer journey. The Co-Survivor Award is being sponsored by new
2005 Komen New York City Race for the Cure® supporter, DSW.
If you would like to nominate someone for either of these awards, please
send a letter outlining your reasons why to: Adrienne Scordato,
Communications Director, Komen Greater NYC, 341 W 38th Street, 10th
Floor, New York, NY 10018 or to [email protected]. The
application deadline is August 1, 2005.
Memorial and Honorarium donations are also considered part of a donor’s
cumulative contributions. This allows for the donor, as well as the person
honored or memorialized, to be recognized in the appropriate category.
Cumulative donations made in the name of the person honored/memorialized
will determine their category for recognition.
For the next 2 years, every time you order-in a spicy tuna roll, a fresh
garden salad, or anything from over 700 New York restaurants, you can
contribute funds to Komen Greater NYC. SeamlessWeb, the premier NYC
food delivery website, has agreed to
make a donation each time you order
through their new At Home website.
Over 150,000 New Yorkers use
SeamlessWeb’s convenient online
menus to order lunch and dinner at the office. Now, SeamlessWeb’s new
At Home service enables you to order online from anywhere.
SeamlessWeb has agreed to contribute $25 for every 100 orders placed
over the next 2 years by customers who register by using Komen’s
promotion code with their first order (Komen participants will also get 10%
off their first order.). All you need to do is go to www.seamlessweb.com
and enter the promotion code KOMEN with your first order.

level of your gift.

Quilt Notecards and an invitation to a donor reception with a medical specialist,

role in supporting Komen Greater NYC. Over the years, Federated has
awarded the Affiliate with several
substantial donations for “the continued
support of the education, screening,
treatment and research of breast
cancer for underserved women in the five boroughs of New York City.”
These donations demonstrate Federated’s commitment to “give back to
the communities from which we draw strength and sustenance.” And if
you came to the Awards Luncheon, you would have received in the gift
bag some generous goodies from Macy’s New York, which, along with
Bloomingdale’s, is part of the Federated family.
