MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear ECSS members,
President of the ECSS
Albert Gollhofer
The 13th ECSS congress Estoril 2008 in Portugal was a further milestone on the
very successful road of the College. Due to the marvellous conference site, the
great organisation and hospitality of our Portuguese friends and last but not
least due to the sound scientific contribution of each individual participant, we
witnessed one of the best conferences we ever had. Our plenary as well as our
invited symposia achieved tremendous attendance. They reflected a broad
vision of highly relevant topics in the field of sports and exercise. In the ECSS
2008 we had the highest number of applications for our Young Investigator
Award. Even, if not all participants made it to the stage and were nominated for
one of the prestigious prices sponsored by Mars, we were deeply impressed
by the outstanding material submitted. The development, both in quantity as
well as quality certainly underscores the immense importance of the YIA as
the back-bone of our college. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and
compliments to all of the participants who secured the great success of the
Congress with their oral and poster research presentations.
Major essentials for ECSS 2008-2009
Members:
The ECSS greatly appreciates the continuously growing number of ECSS
members. Your support secures the solid base we are operating from. Thus,
we are constantly working towards improving your membership benefits.
Partners:
In this context we would also like to thank our partners, long-standing as well
as new members of the family.

EJSS - Journal:
4 European College of Sport Science
The Journal Selection for MEDLINE® Indexing has not yet been accepted.
Therefore the ECSS has currently launched a reapplication and we are very
confident regarding a positive decision. For our journal this achievement is the
most important step in the near future. The scientific level of the journal is
permanently improving; the submission of abstracts is now being operated
electronically. Since this year we have increased to 6 issues per year and
again encouraged the publication of position statements on most important
topics. These statements are discussed in specifically designed symposia at
our annual conferences.
Upcoming Congresses:
Oslo 2009: The scientific program for the plenary and the invited sessions is
about to be finalised. The homepage of the 14th ECSS Congress next year in
Oslo is online (www.ecss-congress.eu) and registration will be opened at 15th
December 2008. The local team is highly motivated to serve all participants
and to arrange a Nordic flavour at our next years Congress.
Antalya 2010: The Congress site in Antalya has been decided. Our Turkish
friends are preparing the first arrangements. The scientific program will be
elaborated during this winter and the homepage of the 15th ECSS Congress
Antalya 2010 has been launched (www.ecss-congress.eu).
Liverpool 2011: Liverpool will be the host of the 16th ECSS congress. A fantastic
city with all the memories of the music of the 60ies will provide the framework.
Dear friends,
sport science in Europe is on an exiting journey. I would like to invite each
individual member to take part in this great adventure and to provide new
research ideas and intellectual enthusiasm. The ECSS needs your active
participation in order to foster the big idea behind it all and health related
questions of our modern societies.
In 2009, we will be preparing the Congress in Oslo, Norway. Moving from
Portugal to Norway might be a great change in the travel schedules, it is,
however, only a small commitment necessary for you: To join us again in 2009
for another ECSS Congress.
I look forward to meeting you all again in the northern part of Europe, in Oslo.
With best regards,
ECSS
Albert Gollhofer

Dear Colleagues,
Ever since I started my work with the European College of Sport Science at my first ECSS Congress in Estoril,
the warm welcome of my colleagues from the ECSS
and you, the members and participants of the
congress, instantly made me feel being part of a great
ECSS family. I thank you for this.
Concluding my studies at the German Sport University
in Cologne (Academic diploma in Sport Science with
a major in Media & Communication) and now working
for an organisation that has developed into one of the
leading scientific communities in sport science
throughout Europe and the beyond, it is a great
opportunity for me not only to follow my personal
interests but also to face the challenges of the ECSS.
Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity
and warmly welcoming me.
I very much look forward to seeing you all again 2009 in Oslo.
Yours Sincerely,
ECSS

10 European College of Sport Science
With respect to the Science, the Local Scientific Committee was indeed
successful to offer a wide variety of topics; from physiology to sociology, from
sport medicine to ethical issues in sports. Four plenary sessions, 36 invited
sessions (112 papers), 75 thematic oral presentations (446 papers) and 45
thematic poster sessions (1172 papers) provided proof of the sizzling activities
of the College, even with such a great sunny (and "beachy") environment. Also,
the six satellite symposia were very much appreciated. Of the 1730 papers
presented, 214 papers (114 oral presentations) were accepted for running for
the Mars Young Investigator Awards. We appreciate all participants for their
contributions in making this event one of the most successful in the history of
the ECSS.
With respect to the social programme, highlights consisted of the reception in
the gardens of the Casino of Estoril, the efficient distribution of the lunches in
the big tent located in front of the congress centre, the evening work outs on the
Estoril beach, the closing dinner in the Casino with the spectacular show and,
the informal party in the tent. Of course, as mentioned already, the beautiful
environment and the nice weather helped also to make this event not only of
great scientific value, but a good occasion to discuss, interact and enjoy life at
the beach, also.
We were happy to welcome more
than 2000 participants from many
countries from all over the world. Of
course, for organizing such a big
event, one needs to rely upon a
strong team and initiatives from
many individuals. Our multi-lingual
Welcome Desk Ladies, proved to be
highly efficient and, the many
colleagues and volunteers in their fashionable green T-shirts were more
than eager to help out wherever
needed. The technical exhibition
was also a big success and well
visited, thanks to its good and
accessible location in the main hall.
We are quite confident of the fact that

practically all sessions went as
expected, thanks to the competent
assistance of our volunteers. We are greatly indebted to all Reviewers, Invited
Speakers, Chair Persons (those planned and those who jumped in) for their
excellent work. Thank you all, for a job well done!

INVESTIGATORS AWARDS
YOUNG INVESTIGATORS AWARD 2008
Mars, Incorporated
12 European College of Sport Science
The 13th Edition of the awards, and I still have the same pleasure to open this
more and more prestigious ceremony.
This 13th edition of the ECSS congress confirms the high scientific level of its
members, and we are proud to have been able to detect from the very beginning
of the story of the College that it will become a highly credible institution.
Mars Incorporated indeed is the most convinced supporter of ECSS, ever since
the beginning of 1995 because we are both strongly committed to the
development and encouragement of healthy lifestyles. You hold some
important keys to the locks. Thanks to all your research, we are more and more
aware of the role of physical activity in the prevention of non communicable
diseases. This is why Mars wants to maintain good relationships with the
college. In order to convince public health authorities to set up national and
international physical activity promotion programs, we need relevant scientific
evidence which only serious research can provide.
At the EU level we are also member of the EU platform on diet and physical
activity established by the EU Commission DG Sanco and partner of the European
Epode Network to implement in each member state the successful multi
stakeholders approach to prevent childhood obesity.
But let me come back to this ECSS competition. According to the number and
quality of posters and oral communications during this congress, there is no
doubt ECSS that is playing a huge role for the European citizen's health.
For the 13th time, Mars is proud to be the partner of ECSS and to congratulate the
young investigators as recognition of their high standard of research projects.
Mars and ECSS are complementary for building this international scientific
network.
With all the college founders and members, these young scientists work
energetically towards improving the quality of sport sciences. As a responsible
leading food manufacturer, Mars takes part in the improved awareness of its
consumers with regard to the role of healthy lifestyles and especially the
importance of physical activity and balanced diet for health.
incorporated
I am convinced that the relationship between ECSS and Mars
will continue to be fruitful. We are delighted to participate in the
College's efforts to activate and motivate young scientists. Every
year, the participation to the awards increases, as well as the
quality. This is in line with our way of working: the constant aim
is to reach excellence, not just alone, but with all our partners.
Now the time has come to discover and congratulate the
winners. It is important to recognise the work they have carried
out to raise the interest of other young scientists for future research. I would like
to thank again the local organisers who did a fantastic job. I would like to
extend my special gratitude to the members of the scientific committee who
had the difficult task of judging the participants.
I will have the pleasure to see you again in Oslo 2009 for a further update in
sport science.

THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF
SPORT SCIENCE
Facts
Since 2001 the ECSS has launched the European Journal of Sport Science (EJSS)
as its official peer reviewed journal. This journal is free of charge for all ECSS
members consisting of original research articles and intra- and interdisciplinary
reviews of the sport science research from sport scientists worldwide.
Over the last few years the EJSS has steadily grown as well as gradually
increased the number of submissions each year. The succinct articles and
multimedia illustrations of a multidisciplinary EJSS cover the natural, biological,
medical, behavioural, and social science as they pertain to sport and exercise.
The EJSS has been accepted for Thomson ISI Journal Citation Reports and its
impact factor will be announced in June 2009. In 2008 it was decided to increase
the number of issues per annum from 4 to 6. The journal is available both,
electronically including back issues and hard copy.
For more detailed information about the European Journal of Sport Science
such as authors guidelines or the editorial board of the EJSS please visit the

JSPFSM-ECSS EXCHANGE REPORT
JSPFSM Annual Congress in Beppu from the 18th to the 20th of September 2008
After returning home from a very productive conference in Estoril, we were all very surprised to receive a call from
the ECSS asking if we would like to represent the ECSS in Japan. Of all the questions any of us had been asked in
recent weeks, this was perhaps the easiest to answer.
JAPAN 2008
And so it came to be that three Europeans (Neil Cronin, Finland/Denmark, Toni Tinken, UK and Stephan Klossner,
Switzerland) ended up in the humid but incredibly scenic town of Beppu in South-Western Japan. We were met
by Dr. Onodera on the first night, where we got our first experience of Japanese hospitality. As was to become the
norm throughout the trip, we were taken for dinner and offered the finest in Japanese cuisine.
On day 2, we met with Professor
Katsumura at the congress venue,
and we were once again
astounded by the hospitality that
was on display. That evening, we
joined Professor Katsumura and his
young associates for a meal that will
remain in our memories for a long
time: The first course was the skin
of the potentially lethal blowfish.
Fortunately no-one had annoyed the
chef that evening because we all
lived to see the next course, in fact
the next 9 courses. Although we
tried to be polite and eat everything,
the good professor and his team
made sure that we eventually
conceded and stopped eating. After dinner, we moved on to what
seemed to be a closed bar. Within
18 European College of Sport Science
minutes of our arrival, the
whole
place
was
transformed into a
production factory, with yet
more of the finest food
arriving at regular intervals.
It was at this point that Dr.
Murase introduced us to
another
Japanese
delicacy: Pigs ears.
Perhaps for comedy
purposes, he let us eat a
few each before telling us
what they were. We were
somewhat less amused
than our hosts.
Beppu is a town that is
famous for it's Onsen, or
Japanese public baths.
These are surely one of the
world's
greatest
inventions, along with the
wheel and the Sony Playstation. It was in one of these marvellous public baths where we were to achieve the
enviable feat of lying naked in a hot outdoor bath while a tsunami raged overhead (actually 'raged' is an
exaggeration but it's our story).
On day three we met at the B-Con plaza for the international exchange symposium. We were greeted by a good
sized audience, and the two hour session provided us with an excellent opportunity to present and discuss our
research with our Japanese colleagues. The session yielded some very fruitful discussions and provided yet
more evidence of how successful the collaboration has been between these two organisations.
JAPAN 2008
Despite the incredible experience that we had in Beppu, our journey had to come to an end eventually (mainly
because our supervisors would have cut our funding if we didn't get home soon). Thanks to the strong connection
between the JSPFSM and ECSS, we were able to gain valuable experience in presenting and discussing our
research in an international setting, whilst simultaneously experiencing Japanese culture (and mastering the art
of chopstick use). The result
of this connection was that
we returned to Europe with
a collection of unforgettable memories, and a
remarkably
positive
impression of Japan and its
wonderfully hospitable
people.
It is for this reason that we
would like to wholeheartedly thank the JSPFSM
and ECSS, but also Professor Katsumura in particular.
Origato Japan!

WELCOME TO OSLO, NORWAY
Welcome
On behalf of the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, we are pleased to
welcome you to the 14th Annual Congress of the ECSS in Oslo, Norway, June
24th to 27th 2009.
Oslo in the capital of Norway and is situated at the head of the
Oslo fjord and surrounded by forested ridges. Oslo is unique, a
city surrounding a sea inlet with mountains as a backdrop. At
the end of June, summer in Norway is at its most beautiful.
The scientific programme will offer a broad and interdisciplinary
spectrum of current research work in sport science.
Internationally well known scientists will present their keynotes,
giving an overview of the research state-of-the-art. Many
colleagues from all over the world will discuss their scientific
findings in oral or poster presentations.
Please remember the deadline for abstract submission: February 15th 2009.
Our webpage is ready. Please visit www.ecss-congress.eu to submit your
abstract, register for the congress, and choose your hotel.
Welcome to Oslo in 2009!
Location
The ECSS Oslo 2009 will take place in Oslo, Norway.
ECSS CONGRESS OSLO 2009
Between the Oslo Fjord and the green hills of Oslomarka lies the Norwegian
capital. The combination of city life and easy access to outdoor activities
makes Oslo a unique destination.
Oslo has just over half a million inhabitants, a very low number compared to
other European capitals. But it is also one of the largest; Oslo covers an area
of 450 square kilometers - most of it forest and cultivable land.
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Oslo's climate is milder that what its latitude would
imply.
Many people see Oslo as the winter capital. But Oslo is just as much a summer
city. On a summer's day the small boats crowd the Oslo Fjord and the parks
are full of picnickers - Oslo's citizens really make the most of it when the sun
appears.
A widely varied cultural life flourishes in Oslo. You can experience some of
the city's many attractions and sights of interest, or sit at a sidewalk café and
take in the impressions of the city and its people. Oslo has something for
every taste.
Congress Venue
The ECSS'09 will take place at Oslo Congress Centre which is a modern
congress Centre located in the heart of Oslo and within walking distance to
the congress hotels, transport systems, shopping and restaurants. The Centre
is a professional, flexible and comprehensive meeting venue that has a
colourful history dating back almost a century.
