adly this year William Funnell’s ride Cortaflex
Mondriaan is due to be retired and will do
so before the Carpetright Derby on Sunday
26th June. Mondriaan is in a select band of horses
who have won the Derby three times, alongside Mon
Santa, with Michael Whitaker and Corrada with Peter
Charles. Only Booomerang with Eddie Macken has
won the Derby a total of four times.
Julie Slade’s 17-year-old bay gelding holds an
impressive record in the Hickstead Derby. He finished
third in his first attempt in the class in 2003, he won
in 2006, finished fourth the following year, then
achieved back to back wins in 2008 and 2009.
Lizzie Bunn, Hickstead director says “He loves
Hickstead – when he canters into the International
Arena, particularly in front of a huge Derby crowd, he
grows several inches. He will be remembered as one

Q & A ❘ Paula Broadhurst BSc.,BVMS, Cert EM (Stud Med), MRCVS
Q: I have inherited an older horse with Bone Spavin. Is there an alternative to Bute as a treatment?
Treating Bone Spavin
B
By Paula
Broadhurst
one spavin is a term used to
describe osteoarthritis of the
small hock joints (which includes
the proximal intertarsal joint, the distal
intertarsal joint and the tarsometatarsal
joint). Depending on the severity of the
changes, it may be associated with a
visible fibrous or bony swelling on the
inside of the hock.
The clinical signs horses may show
with bone spavin are extremely variable
and can include poor performance,
loss of movement, frequent disuniting
when cantering, resistance when ridden,
stopping when jumping and subtle or
obvious lameness. The diagnosis of
bone spavin can be confirmed by your
vet conducting a lameness work up and
performing nerve blocks to demonstrate
that this area in the hock is the cause
of the lameness. Radiographs will often
show bone changes however, the degree
of change on the radiographs does not
always correspond directly to the severity
of the lameness. In some cases a bone
scan (nuclear scintigraphy) might be
required to confirm the diagnosis.
There are a number of different
options for the treatment of bone spavin with the ultimate aim being
to manage the horses’ pain so that they can stay in work. In the
pleasure horse, the main treatment option is usually non-steriodal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Phenylbutazone (Bute), Danilon
or Metacam. The lowest dose possible to keep the horse comfortable
should always be used as long term use of high levels of NSAIDs has been
associated with stomach ulceration, liver and/or kidney problems.
Intraarticular medication into the specific joint causing the lameness
with corticosteroids, hyaluronan and/or polysulfated glycosaminoglycans
(PSGAGs) can provide excellent relief for many horses. Importantly, the
clinical improvement in the lameness will usually far outlast the drug
testing time so this is an important management strategy in competition
horses and is often used in pleasure horses to reduce the need for NSAIDs.
While opinion and research varies greatly on the therapeutic benefits
of oral nutraceuticals such as glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic
acid, many owners report an excellent response to treatment. While the
horse may still require the use of NSAIDs the dose and frequency might
be greatly reduced. The use of intra-muscular injections of PSGAGs and
hyluronic acid has also had some positive reports for the management
of bone spavin. There are various herbal remedies available on the
market however, these are often lacking in clinical trials to support there
effectiveness.
Recently a drug called Tiludronate (which is given intravenously
to treat bone spavin) has become licensed for use in horses and many
respond well to its use however, it is quite expensive when compared to
NSAID use. In some cases that have failed to respond to other treatments,
conducting surgery to stimulate the joints to fuse or performing a
neurectomy can be an appropriate option to consider.
Careful attention to farriery is very important in horses with bone
spavin. The feet must be kept well balanced and often improved
comfort is created by rolling the toe to ease break-over and/or raising
the heels. Ultimately there are many treatment options available for the
management of bone spavin and the best combination of strategies
appropriate for your individual horse should be decided based on
consultation with your vet. NM

IF YOU ALREADY USE PELLETS
YOU WILL LOVE
Liston Equi-Pellets
“Liston Equi-Pellets is not a bio-fuel pellet simply re-bagged to sell
for equestrian use. It is a specifically made pure wood fibre pellet
(Pine and Silver Birch). Liston Equi-Pellets are heated to a higher
temperature in order to extract more moisture, and cut shorter for
faster absorbtion. This results in Liston Equi-Pellets being better
value for money as you get more pellets per kilo as they weigh less,
plus they absorb more moisture and absorb faster than all other
pellets we and our clients have tested (see photographs).
We also offer a personal service with demonstrations and offer
advice on laying your bed and most effective use of the bedding.“
Above: On the left side of the tray Liston Equi-Pellets
and another leading brand in the right side, immediately after water added.
Below: After only 10 seconds, the Liston Equi-Pellets
(on the left) are clearly expanding much faster and
absorbing more moisture.

NagMag Interviews: Oliver Townend
Yorkshire born and bred, rider Oliver Townend – his plans for the future and more!
Taking the boy out of
Huddersfield
O

liver Townend is a name
that most people recognize,
although only 28 years of
age, Oliver seems to have packed
an awful lot into his career so far.
Over the years Oliver has achieved
phenomenal success including winning
the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton
Horse Trials in 2009 on Flint Curtis
at just the tender age of 26 and also
Burghley in the same year. Oliver is
extremely driven and not having had
what would be considered the normal
eventing background, he is extremely
grateful to those who have supported
him and made his career to date
possible.
Oliver owes much of his
enthusiasm and love of horses to his
parents. Growing up in Huddersfield,
with not much money to spare, Alan,
his father, was a milkman/farm dealer
who dealt in horses as a sideline to
enable him to compete in three-day
eventing and his mother, Eve, showed
side saddle at County level, both have
supported Oliver during his career
and provide the vital backbone of
proceedings. His father works with
the younger horses, keeping them
fit while Oliver is off competing, he
also manages all the feeding and
maintenance on the yard while his
mother generally looks after the finances and the team and is well
known for her excellent cooking, much appreciated at the Open days.
With the Whitakers living nearby, Oliver’s career started with
show jumping, taking his first success at age 11 on his pony ‘Cool
Mule’ at the Horse of the Year Show and at 13 representing Britain
with the pony eventing team at the European Championships. Oliver
learnt early on from his father how to get the best out of his horses
probably the basis for his renowned business knowledge. Not one
for school, he would often end up spending the day with his father
at the horse sales. With a thirst for further knowledge, he enjoyed
a three year stint as stable jockey to British Team trainer, Kenneth
Clawson based in Leicestershire, leaving at the age of 21 with no
horse, no car and £1,400 to his name.
After setting up on his own with just a few pounds to his name,
within the space of 5 years through his base desire and unstoppable
approach to winning, Oliver had accumulated enough to buy his
own farm in Dudleston Heath, Ellesmere, Shropshire which is still his
base today. Oliver was only young and his approach was very much
sink or swim, he would ring round desperate for rides, and it was

■ What are your long term
eventing plans?
I feel there is a good 15 – 20
years left for me in eventing. My aim
is definitely to stay at the top of my
game and also to keep producing
horses to 4 star level. Currently I have
3 horses competing at 4 star level but
I have quite a few that I am currently
working on this year to qualify by the
end of the season.
during this period that perhaps some people thought his methods
too demanding, but they had perhaps forgotten that Oliver was a
very determined Yorkshireman. These days Oliver still has a truthful
approach and will speak his mind only because he has the interest
of the sport and its future at heart.
Last year Oliver suffered a nasty fall at Kentucky with Ashdale
Cruise Master at the time they were sitting in sixth place after
the dressage section. As Oliver said shortly after the event “I am
lucky that the horse was safe and both of us were still in one
piece. The horse was going very well, Ashdale is a top class horse,
we just made a mistake and didn’t jump high enough, but it was
a cruncher of a fall and I wouldn’t want too many like it. At the
time I was only one of 3 people to be in the position to win the
Grand Slam alongside Andrew Hoy and Pippa Funnell but I have no
regrets regarding not being able to continue as I can’t miss what I
never had.” As a consequence last year saw Oliver re-arranging his
prospects with a view to coming out fighting this year.
NagMag caught up with Oliver to find out his plans for the
future.
■ With the 2012 Olympics approaching what are your aims
and ambitions building up to the event?
My aim is to get through as many Qualifiers as possible for the
London Olympics, there is no point in just glamorizing 2012 but I
will be starting my quest in earnest this year.
On the course itself at Greenwich Park, Oliver feels that the
course is very steep which will impact upon the choice of horse, also
both horse and rider will have to be in tip top condition.
There are five team places for GB Eventing up for grabs and
currently Oliver is ranked 14th in the world and 5th highest home
nations rider, competition this year should therefore be very tight.
Contact NagMag sales team on: 01273 491 550 / 01273 491 922
■ What in your view makes a
good horse?
There is no particular breed that
I favour, although I do prefer Irish
horses. In my view a horse should
show good signs of athleticism and
a sharp brain coupled with flowing
movement and a good jump.
■ Funding must be a huge
problem and with money tighter
than ever do you find this
affecting the number of sponsors
or backers.?
It is extremely difficult to fund but I
have excellent supporters in Dodson &
Horrell, TRM, Equi-trek, Kentaur, Point
-Two, Macwet, Champion, Subaru,
Lincoln and Flair which obviously helps
with the day to day costs involved in
having a string of horses.
■ I understand you have started a
breeding programme can you tell
me a little more about this?
Alongside Nina Barbour we
have established a Stud sited on the
outskirts of a village called Harthill,
in Cheshire where there is currently a
dilapidated farm and plans are afoot
to turn this into an International
Breeding centre. We are currently
seeking planning consent to build
a £1 million world-class equestrian
centre that will house some of the
world’s most exceptional stallions.
Plans will include stabling for 75
horses, on-site veterinary facilities,
June 2011 NagMag ❘ 09
NagMag Interviews: Oliver Townend
a full size training and viewing
area, exercise and welfare units. Nina
currently manages the Bolesworth
Estate and will head the operation. It
is our aim to breed world-class event
horses for British and International
riders. I have competed successfully
around the world on many horses
with Irish heritage and at Harthill
we would like to harness that Irish
tradition with our state-of-the-art
facilities to produce the eventing
champions of the future. Pure Irish
breeds are getting quite difficult to
find, therefore most will be based
upon Irish x breeds.
■ I understand you have your own clothing range, when
not riding how do you like to dress?
As part of my business plan I introduced my own clothing
range and developed a website to sell this range along with riding
equipment, supplements and gifts. One of the most important
products to me is the Point-two air jacket, following my fall at
Kentucky last year I would recommend it compulsory that all
event riders wear safety jackets not only to help prevent the more
serious injury but as a result of this, recovery time is of course
shortened. Point-two air jackets, clothing and equipment can
be found on my website www.townendonline.co.uk . When not
riding my preferred style is casual but smart. During the winter
months I look for the designs that will set the trend for the
following year and another goal that I am working towards is to
promote my designer clothing range in as many stores as possible
by the end of the year.
■ You recently teamed up with
Carriage Driver Boyd Excell for the
programme Changing Reins on
Horse & Country TV, what did you
take away from this experience?
Boyd was and still is a very good
friend of mine and although we both
very much enjoyed the experience,
it has not been a revelation to me
and I will not be taking Carriage
Driving any further. It was fun but my
passion still remains firmly planted in
eventing.
■ Finally, you are so busy do you have time for holidays?
Winter is the time if any that I can spare any time to myself
and then I would aim to spend Christmas skiing with friends. I
would love the chance for a Summer or ‘hot’ holiday but really
with the schedules I have to follow there is little or no chance.
10 ❘ NagMag
June 2011 © Julian Portch [email protected]
■ Again you teamed up with
show jumping legend Geoff
Billington for the very successful
Champions Tour, will you be
repeating this again this year?
I have known Geoff for a
long time and after winning at
Badminton, Geoff rang to see if I
would be interested to share our
experiences through a tour of
lectures and demonstrations. I think
at some stage it was described as
a ‘laugh and learn’ tour, we put on
a show that was aimed at family
entertainment with the emphasis on
learning. If time permits we shall go
ahead again this year but it really
is a question of fitting in with both
our busy schedules.
Oliver seems to have cracked it, he has an established business
with good loyal staff; he has some very good horses and the
rest of the season ahead of him. He is already at the top of the
Eventers league on points, so perhaps his hunger to become part
of the 2012 Olympic Team will get him the recognition he deserves
from the selectors. As Oliver says “ We should not be content
with anything but the top spot, the Germans and the French have
some very good horses and the Irish are in contention.” With his
unfaltering drive, lets hope this Yorkshire lad, can provide the
impetus needed to spur our team on to greater things. NM

The Paso Fino Horse is one of the world’s most exciting breeds giving
the smoothest ride in the world and attracting many riders. The Paso
Fino Horse developed in Spain through the Barb, which produced
the Spanish Jennet, and the Andalusian. Columbus transported
the horses to what is now the Dominican Republic. Subsequent
explorers took them to Puerto Rico, Colombia, Cuba, Panama and
Mexico. These stunning horses range in size from 13.2 hh to 15.2 hh
and are in every colour. The Paso temperament is kind and gentle.
We were the first to introduce these horses to Britain and we are the
foremost stud with an internationally approved breeding programme.
At Rancho Pavo Real we have over 20 horses – from broodmares,
stallions, young-stock to pleasure riding horses.

Westlands Farm Stud
Breeding Sports Horses
with a difference
R
By Linda
Warburton
uss Hill is a lovely, leafy area
of Surrey with outstanding
equestrian facilities based
near to the thriving town of Crawley
and nestled there amongst the trees is
Westlands Farm Stud, home to Claire
Mills, her husband, two children,
Johnny aged four and a half and
Lily aged nine months, two dogs,
chickens, a cow and 10 of her own
ponies and horses. To say life is busy is
a bit of an understatement.
Originally from Clapham but
bought up in Crawley, Claire is
very much a local girl and fondly
remembers her time from the age of
three at Pooh Corner Riding School
where most of the Crawley Riders
14 ❘ NagMag
June 2011 would start their careers. At the age of sixteen, still horse mad, Claire
managed with a loan from her parents to buy her first horse, Oscar,
who is still with Claire. At that time he was a 3-year-old, 16.2hh Irish
Thoroughbred, ex-racehorse and Claire would be seen doing the
rounds of Dressage and Eventing and also hunting him with the local
Surrey Union Hunt. Her competing was very much a leisure activity
that she funded by working at nearby Gatwick Airport.
It was about five years ago that Claire met up with her now
husband and started off her business as a livery yard with about
fifteen full liveries. The reason for her interest in breeding, came
about after she acquired a Welsh Pony and for fun decided to breed
from her; unfortunately the foal was born five weeks prematurely
and was still born. Undeterred Clair managed to loan an orphaned
foal from the Foal Bank but again bad luck was to prevail and after
the foal had been weaned at six months old, it developed a hernia
amongst other problems and at the age of eleven months had to be
put down. It was after these ordeals that Claire decided what she
really wanted was to raise a foal.
Looking around Westlands Farm Stud now, it seems hard to
realise that these were the beginnings of Claire’s breeding career.
The Stallions have immaculate conditions and the work at the stud is
very much ongoing. Claire’s father is a great help in maintaining and
creating the day to day groundwork along with a part-time help with
the reproduction work and one full time stable hand, who exercises
and generally helps out with the welfare of the horses. Westlands
Farm Stud is a very organic business but
as Claire says “I am not sure how big I
Claire’s new Coloured Stallion
‘river valley light in the dark
want the business to grow. I like to think
that my approach to the business is not
only helpful but that I can take time with
both Stallion and Mare owners, showing
them from start to finish any processes
they may be interested in and helping
them to understand how we work.” The
reproduction unit is simple but effective
and this sits very nicely alongside a
hydrotherapy pool which Claire is very
proud of. The pool is a magnificent find,
not only is it highly beneficial for a large
number of equine injuries and ailments but
can be used after exercise and to help with
general fitness and well being. Looking

something like a trailer, the horses are
happy to be ‘loaded’ in and the water is
kept at a constant two to four degrees
while adjusting to the correct height.
Not only does Claire have her own
Stallions at stud, she also is very proud
to be able to offer services of all the
fantastic Spanish Stallions from Naomi
Vance Webb of Meadowbrook Pre Stud.
With just two weeks to go before the
birth of her little boy, Claire purchased
Lawmen’s Diago her first Stallion.
When she purchased him he was still
with his mother, who was returned to
the owner as soon as Diago had been
weaned, part of the purchase package
was to keep Diago entire. Diago is now
competing as a four year old, mainly
elementary dressage but will shortly
embark on an eventing career as Claire
feels it would be a shame to waste his
great jump. As Claire believes “Diago is
a slow burner compared with Bamba’s
Legacy but in the long term I think he
will make a very sound and proficient
competitor in both Dressage and
Eventing.” Bamba’s Legacy or ‘Billy’ is
half owned by Claire and half by Gary
Ryland. Claire had met Gary a few times
on the showing circuit where he had
shown ‘Billy’ inhand, she was impressed
by the Stallion and when approached
by Gary was pleased to take on half
ownership. ‘Billy’ is now out competing
at BE 100 Level and is pushing to qualify
for the five year old class this year. He
has his first novice in June and Claire
hopes to achieve 1* event with him by
the end of the season. “He should do
well” Claire Says “he is very consistent
and a good all round event horse.”
DonnerRomeo another Stallion
on the yard is owned by Helen Dart,
the Master Saddler from Bookham
Saddlery. DonnerRomeo a licenced

Claire has very recently acquired a lovely coloured Stallion and
more will be seen of this fella in the very near future, details of him
will shortly appear on the Westland Farm Stud website. A mention
should be made here for Zac Heydon who rides and competes
Claires stallions; Zac is also able to provide a schooling and backing
service at Westlands Farm Stud.
As a local business, Westland Farm Stud is very welcoming.
The care that Claire takes on all aspects of her business can be
saluted. She is able to supply frozen semen to the UK and has the
contact to be able to supply to an International market. Claire
is interested in working with others to develop new techniques
and improve existing methods of semen collection, shipping,
cryopreservation and improving fertility. Her ambitions are to hold
breeding awareness sessions alongside her popular open days.
Claire has regular visits from her vet Meagan Burbury BVSc(hons)
MACVS (eq.med) MRCVS, Meagan originally from Australia and now
working at Stephen Brooks Equine Vets in Charlwood specialises
in foal medicine and reproduction and has a very good working
relationship with Claire.
Last year Westlands Farm Stud had a 95 per cent success rate,
the remaining percentage purely being down to reproduction
problems. Some of her clients had been the recipients of bad
experiences in the past but with gentle nurturing by Claire,
encouraging them to bring their mares to the stud and taking time
to ensure the end results could be achieved, Claire can count on
excellent references and future business. At the end of the day,
Westlands Farm Stud is Claires’ home as well as being a family run
business, all that she wishes is that the business should reflect her
love of breeding horses and her belief to offer top class service for
her clients.
For details of Westland Farm Stud, see their website
www.westlands-stud.co.uk Claire is very willing to open her
doors to show clients around and to use the facilities of the
hydrotherapy pool, excellent value from £20 per session. NM

Chestfields Sponsor Hickstead
Chestfields offer a range of Grooming and Showing
products that are 100 per cent natural and contain only the
finest selections of soy, corn, palm kernel, apple seed and
jojoba. They also hold a propriety blend of other plant seed

against the use of chemicals, as they often cause poor skin
conditions, can be harmful or irritant to your horse’s coat

Professional Horsefly Control System – Innovative and functional
Alcochem Hygiene has launched a new selective trap,
highly effective against horseflies. Horseflies are a constant
nuisance out in the field, particularly in the period May –
October. As they feed themselves on blood, their aggressive
stings are very painful for animals, such as horses and
cows, but also for humans. The new trap system, called the
H-trap, effectively controls the amount of horseflies and
reduces them to an absolute minimum. The H-trap needs to
be placed outdoors and works without the need of chemicals
or electricity. Extensive tests have shown that reductions of
90-95 per cent on horseflies in a wide area around the trap
can be realised.
The horseflies will mistakenly see the centrally placed
ball in the H-trap as a large animal and move towards this
ball. Once they are positioned on the black ball of the H-trap
they will investigate the “victim” and try to sting it. After
this unsuccessful attempt, they will fly away from the trap.
Horseflies are vertical risers, so they can only fly upwards. The trap is designed in such a way that via
a conical hood system, the flies are guided upwards into a centrally placed collection bin. From this bin
they cannot escape. The bin needs to be emptied periodically.
Contact Herbie for more info and pricing, visit www.h-trap.net and see the on-line

Complementary Therapies
Geoff tells us about his route in to veterinary medicine and his work in homeopathy
Geoff Johnson –
Flying the Flag for
Homeopathy
I
wanted to be a vet when
I was four-years-old – I
don’t remember why. I was
always fascinated by animals and
can remember as a young child
wanting to dig up my guinea pig
a few weeks after it died because
I was curious about his insides!
My passion grew and I went on
to study veterinary medicine at
Cambridge.
I practised conventionally
for eight years before realising
A former sceptic – Geoff Johnson
that except for simple problems,
I treated very few patients satisfactorily. I merely controlled their
symptoms with drugs, effective as they often were.
Around this time I suffered from appalling hay fever requiring
quite heavy drugging using anti-histamines to stop me clawing my
eyes out. In 1995 I went camping – and forgot my drugs. There
was a homeopath in a tent nearby who asked me what I thought
were pointless questions before giving me one pill. Naturally I
insisted that I needed many pills and asked what the dosage regime
was. The reply came that although I might know about veterinary
medicine, I should listen to the expert on homeopathy rather than
presuming I knew more about it than her. Chastened I took the pill
and an hour later I was better. I haven’t taken an antihistamine for
16 years and I was studying homeopathy three months later.
It has been an enormously satisfying journey of study leading
to a busy practice and becoming a teacher of homeopathy for
veterinary surgeons, homeopathic vets, homeopaths, doctors, and
farmers.
A day in my life...
Yesterday I saw a nervous dog with retinal degeneration after an
eye inflammation. I then drove across the beautiful Quantocks
to see a horse that had been coughing for four years after it had
recovered from Lymes disease (I will bet my consultation fee with
Contact NagMag sales team on: 01273 491 550 / 01273 491 922
anyone that this horse is better within
six weeks). I then contacted an owner
whose cat has had diarrhoea for eight
years. The cat had the homeopathic
remedy phosphorus four weeks ago
and now has solid stools. I then saw
a boxer with the sad disease CDRM
where the nerves fail to the hind legs.
Unfortunately I have been unable
to help there and I think the end is
nearing. Then I came home and after
supper went to a local village hall to
persuade them to put solar panels on
their roofs. Looking after our world is
a role all healers should embrace
Health isn’t about drugs, although
they are useful. It is about balance
and encouraging our own bodies
to behave as they should. A healthy
environment is essential, and as a
healer/vet - whatever you want to call
me, I am aware that my responsibility
extends beyond prescribing for my
patients. It is about trying to create
a healthy happy world. I feel this
should be included in the training of
all doctors and vets. It is one thing to
give drugs to control disease, but the
most important question is why are
we so ill? Homeopathy is a great tool
for me.
A message to the sceptics...
Open your mind and your eyes. It
seems very strange that something so
dilute could have an effect. It doesn’t
seem to fit with the Newtonian view
of how the body works. However
to say that something cannot work
because humans can’t currently
explain it is the height of arrogance.
Look around the world and the state
it is in – it is obvious that human
understanding of the world is very
superficial. Look at the creaking

the latest science that I think is
supportive of homeopathy. In the

world of quantum theory there is
no matter – just energy. It deals with
the unbelievably small. Science is now
telling us that the world is utterly
unlike what we thought - indeed
the world is nonsense – just like
homeopathy!
Sadly most of the professional
sceptics are incapable of objectively
looking at homeopathy because
they have invested too much of
their egos into their blogs, letters
and web pages. When a promising
veterinary homeopathic trial comes
out they go quiet for a while and
then start again. If they had a true
interest in homeopathy or science
they would pause for thought and
then encourage further investigation.
However they only have interest in
their own mysterious agenda.

There are three main organisations
overseeing homeopathy for people
and animals in the UK. The British Association of Homeopathic
Veterinary Surgeons (www.bahvs.com) for animals, the Society
of Homeopaths for Professional homeopaths, and the Faculty of
Homeopathy for doctors. I would suggest visiting these websites to
find out more. NM

Chris Drayson’s visit to High Bullen Farm
Welcome back Chris Drayson. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our intrepid explorer
owing to the fact he has been out of the saddle for a year – check out this account of his
stay at the wonderful Spirit of Exmoor at High Bullen Farm in Lynton, North Devon.
Riding holidays for adults
By Chris
Drayson
W
ell, after a year without
riding after breaking my
ankle badly and the other
foot, I am starting riding again and my
friends booked a great weekend away
to Exmoor, at Bullen Farm, Near Lynton
in North Devon which has been an
established riding centre since 1988.
Arriving Friday evening to a
pretty 17th Century house on an
old farm, that would be better to
find in daylight, we arrived to a nice
home cooked meal. The journey
from London took about 3 hours
driving. All the rooms are clean and
comfortable with the use of a pretty
lounge and dining room (as normal
you take your own wine). There is also
an annexe with more en-suite rooms
to stay in. After having a look at the
horses and a few drinks we all went
for a good nights sleep!
Waking next morning to a wonderful home cooked breakfast
that we pre-ordered the previous evening, we all talked excitedly
about the horses. They have a selection of horses including
beautiful pure-bred Arabs, thoroughbred x’s, Irish Draught half
breds and Appaloosa’s and cuddly cobs; something suitable for
every level of rider.
I had a beautiful big boy called ‘Harry’ who I called ‘Handsome
Harry’, he was for sale and I was so close to purchasing him, he
went like the wind. All the horses were fit and friendly and very
responsive, it was also possible to help out with them by catching
and feeding them.
We all had a lovely exhilarating ride across Exmoor with some
good canters and gallops, views were stunning and we were lucky
with the weather. The owner, Stephany, who also came out with us
took some of the group back early who did not want to do a longer
ride which was a good idea and fitted in with us very well. Having
got back quite exhausted we all changed and showered and headed
off to Lynton, a very pretty town on the sea with restaurants and
Pubs to eat in, nice shops and a wonderful Art Gallery.
It is a must to ride on the cable car up to the other
Horse Riding Holidays town above, before you head back to the cottage for the
Explore Exmoor National Park, the place to be if next days riding. We were offered changes of horses if
you love horses. Our Farm gate opens straight we wanted but we all kept to our mounts of the previous

Orchard Scurry Driving Team
Emvelo Products Ltd Sponsors
Orchard Scurry Driving Team
E
mvelo Products Ltd
announced that they are
delighted to be supporting the
Orchard Scurry Driving Team for the
coming season.
Chris and Paul Orchard from Kent
have been competing successfully up
and down the country in the sport of
Scurry Driving for over 10 years and
are regulars at The Horse of The Year
Show and Hickstead. Their distinctive
gleaming white ponies and their
skilful speed and accuracy negotiating
the scurry courses are always a delight
for the crowds watching.
Chris and Paul have used Emvelo
Stable+ in their driving pony’s stables
with great success. In addition
Chris says this about a really tough
challenge for Emvelo Stable+;
“My 33-year-old retired show
jumper has type 2 diabetes, he “Wee’s
for England”. He is on a wood fibre
bedding, I take the wet out (that’s
most of the bed usually) every one
and a half to two weeks, that’s the
best economy I can get without the
bed getting nasty. I mucked him
out fully just over a week ago and
gave the floor a good spray over
with Emvelo Stable+ I then put the
new bedding in and sprayed over
the surface. Sure enough the Emvelo
Stable+, as promised, eliminated
the ammonia smell completely and
spraying the surface every couple of
days has kept the bed odour free. So
100 per cent success achieved on a
tough tough challenge. I don’t think
you could really have given it a more
stringent test if you tried.”
“ I am really looking forward to
using the spray in my lorry when I
32 ❘ NagMag
June 2011 have to stay away from home as now I can be confident that I will
no longer have to put up with nasty smells drifting through from
the horse compartment while I am cooking our tea!!! (I wonder if
ponies could talk, would they ask me to spray the living with Emvelo
Stable+ so they don’t need to put up with the smells we make???)”
Emvelo Stable+ incorporated into good stable management
practise may also assist with the horse owner’s budgeting.
Keeping odours to a minimum can make bedding last longer. Also
using Emvelo Stable+ has shown good results on ‘composting’
the muck heap quicker, thus keeping the costs of removal lower
in the knowledge that you are putting goodness back into the
environment.
Emvelo makes natural animal care products which are carefully
selected to provide a better environment for your animals. They
focus on reducing odour, providing microbial balance and reduce
challenges from insects, disease and infection.

All Time Equestrian ❘ advertising feature
New kid on the block
S
arah Kilkelly is the new owner
of ‘All Time Equestrian Ltd’ in
Copthorne, West Sussex and
NagMag invited Sarah to tell us a little
about herself and her new venture.
Sarah explains – I have recently
become the new owner of All Time
Equestrian Ltd, something that I always
wanted to do but the timing was
never right until last autumn when the
opportunity presented itself.
I grew up with ponies and was
a member of South Downs Hunt
East Pony Club from the age of
14. I competed, did hunter trials,
combined training, one day events
and my favourite discipline, show
jumping and then at age 17, I went to
Moreton Morrell Agricultural College
in Warwickshire to study for a National
Diploma in Equine and Business studies.
36 ❘ NagMag
June 2011 After College I groomed in various Hunting yards and a Dealing
yard and then embarked on a season working on the Show Trade
Stands which I absolutely loved. The people I met at that time must
have influenced me hugely, as my old boss is now a supplier of mine
and another long standing friend was the person that initiated the
purchase of All Time Equestrian for me.
I spent time in Ireland working for The Master of the Laois
Foxhounds where I met some amazing characters and very
knowledgeable and brave horsemen and women. I learned a huge
amount while I was there as the Irish horse philosophy is more
commercial and less emotional than the English way.
For the last five years or so I have been working in a business
environment where I ran an office for my old boss who taught me
the fundamentals of running a business, which stands me in great
stead now.
Since November 2010 when I took over All Time Equestrian I
have certainly been busy. While it’s been a huge learning curve I
have cherished every minute; the regular customers have always got
a story or time to stop for a chat creating a sociable atmosphere and
we pride ourselves on a friendly helpful service. The girls working
with me are great, very knowledgeable and have loved being able
to restock the shop with lots of new ideas and different
lines; something that we will continue with.
We are working on the principle that times are quite
tough for most people and that the stock has to be
affordable for everyone but at the same time we are
trying to move away from the ‘bargain’ philosophy. We
aim to supply everyone’s needs as often as possible but
when its not, we have improved the ordering system to
mean that most customer orders are in the shop within
seven days of ordering, giving the customers more choice
on items that we can’t hold in stock all the time.
We will be running various monthly in-store offers
to try and give something back to the customers and
these will be announced through our website www.
alltimeequestrian.co.uk mailing list, through in-store
promotions and the press. There will definitely be a
birthday party to celebrate our first year in business in
November.
As for the future, we will keep doing what we’re
doing and strive to meet more customer needs and
make sure we are the best that we can be. We are a
specialised industry but our customers are very good at

Apprenticeship Schemes
Modern day craft-based sector apprenticeships by Pat Crawford
The return of
Craft based Apprenticeships
D
uring the last few months,
the subject of apprenticeships
has received a lot of column
inches in a wide section of the media –
and the advantages and disadvantages
of this method of training have
engaged the panels of various radio
and television discussion and debating
programmes. It sometimes appears
as though it is the present coalition
government that has discovered a new
and infallible form of training – in fact,
apprenticeship was the only method
of training used in many industries for
hundreds of years.
When in its wisdom the
government of the time virtually
abandoned apprenticeships by
removing funding availability, some
industries suffered more than others.
The craft-based sector was particularly
hard hit – none more so than saddlery
and harness-making – both of which
are very much dependent on the oneto-one training that is the basis of
well founded apprenticeships.
The Society of Master Saddlers
(SMS) and The Worshipful Company
of Saddlers (WCS) led the steering
group that was instrumental in reestablishing apprenticeship-related
qualifications. The Millennium
Apprenticeship scheme resulted
and, since its inception at the end of
1999, it has enjoyed an outstanding
success. The Modern Apprenticeship
was instituted in 2004. Although very
similar in structure to the Millennium
Apprenticeship, there are minor
differences and most apprentices are
indentured to both apprenticeships
simultaneously.
Apprentices are indentured to an
38 ❘ NagMag

Saddlery Training
Centre Salisbury
Apprentice Master – who is always a qualified Master Saddler and/or
Harness-maker – for four years. An apprentice’s previous experience
and/or qualifications are taken into account and the apprenticeship
period reduced accordingly. By the end of the period, the apprentice
is expected to have achieved City and Guild Certification as a
Qualified Saddler and/or Qualified Harness-maker.
Both apprenticeship schemes are jointly overseen by the SMS
and WCS. A Visitor is appointed and he – or she – keeps in contact
with the Apprentice and their Master and makes regular visits to the
place of employment. All apprentices undertake sixteen week-long
modules at the Saddlery Training Centre in Salisbury throughout
their indentured period.
An Internal Verifier assesses all candidates at least twice a year,
this ensures the candidate is working at a satisfactory level. He will
also verify the portfolio the candidate is required to maintain during
training. City and Guilds – the awarding body – appoints an External
Verifier who, in a sense, ‘oversees’ by observing assessments and
examining portfolios.
SMS members who act as Apprentice Masters and/or Visitors are
investing in the future of a proud and highly regarded craft industry.
The training available in this country is regarded as the best in the
world and people come from all round the world to take advantage
of this fact.
Further details about apprenticeship and other training
schemes and information about funding can be obtained

MOBILE STABLES & FIELD SHELTERS
Field Shelters for horses, donkey, pigs or goats are in great demand. Mobile shelters
are on strong metal skids for ease of movement from one area to another. Most
sizes can be undertaken taking into account gateways to be negotiated. Gates,
extra wide bottom stable doors and internal partitions can be added. We also offer
a Stable Conversion Kit to convert your shelter to stabling. Mobile stables do not
usually need Planning consent but please check with your Local Planning Office first.

The welfare of Welsh Ponies and Cobs
Action to stop the plight
of welsh ponies
❝
A
Direct Action Group called ACTION TO STOP THE PLIGHT OF
WELSH PONIES has quickly formed in response to a welfare
issue that erupted at a recent Sale of Welsh Ponies and Cobs
in May in the West Country.
Concerned onlookers were appalled to witness the condition
of a consignment of ponies offered for sale and adopted the
photograph below of a grey Welsh Pony mare with foal at foot,
offered at the sale, as the image for their campaign. The group
immediately began lobbying welfare organisations and the Welsh
Pony and Cob Society for an urgent welfare investigation and
launched an on-line campaign group. In less than a week that
campaign amassed unprecedented numbers of supporters and has
already made some significant achievements.
■ 3,473 sign-ups on the Facebook page ACTION TO STOP THE
PLIGHT OF WELSH PONIES
■ 50,000 responses to an on-line discussion thread about the
case, the related issues and potential solutions
■ The despatch of innumerable lobbying letters to government
agencies, MPs and stakeholder organisations
This will herald the start of a wide-scale, national campaign of
direct action and lobbying for urgent intervention to reduce mass
over-breeding and to eliminate all neglect and suffering in the
breeding of Welsh Ponies.
Every year in the United Kingdom vast numbers of native
ponies suffer and die from starvation and neglect resulting from

uncontrolled, unregulated overbreeding. Fillies that are under-age
and under-weight die giving birth
to foals that they should not be
carrying. Mares repeatedly give birth
in squalid conditions until they die
from infection or exhaustion. Colt
foals find themselves unwanted and
neglected and are either left to fend
for themselves, dying eventually
from starvation on over-grazed,
inhospitable land, or are rounded
up and sold through markets and
eventually end up being processed for
pet food. Others go on to fertilise the
next generation of fillies and so the
whole horrific cycle of suffering goes
on and on unabated.
Native Welsh Ponies have been
suffering in this way for decades.
The ponies of Wales are a national
treasure, but their mass overbreeding is a national tragedy of
immense proportions. The situation is
perpetuated by irresponsible breeding
practices and as a result this particular
action group has been formed.
